    Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen

I am 65 and got a bypass a month ago. My surgeon made me get a cardiac clearance in addition to the medical one. but it was a precaution and he really wasn't worried about my age. Being morbidly obese was a larger health risk than my age. All went well--had the same amount of pain most people comment about, mostly from the gas that they fill your abdomen with. I'm back to doing everything I did before surgery (other than eating my butt off, that is!)
  2. Catlyn, you should contact Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy They specialize in cases where insurance should be covering cases like yours. I've heard they have good success in these cases. Don't fight this by yourself.
  3. I told almost anyone who wanted to listen because I'm an open book like that. Everyone at work knew I was having trouble with my band since they'd see me pick over food and then run to the bathroom to throw up. Now that I have a bypass I can calmly eat my food without all the drama!
  4. Can you have sugar free popsicles? They give you something to sorta chew on, taste good, get fluids in you and might help with your hunger. I agree it's probably head hunger. Try to distract yourself when you get the cravings.
  5. Actually I think it's been fairly civil! People are expressing their opinions and I appreciate that people care enough to warn me off instead of going "Yeah! Try it!! <muffled snicker behind their hand>"😁
  6. Actually I haven't had a sugar craving at all. It's more of a curiosity of what dumping is and how my body will react to it in case it happens.
  7. Ha! This is a great thread. As I have waxed and waned through the years I never got rid of clothes because I knew my loss was temporary and I eventually would be back in the big ones. Then I got a lap band 10 years ago and thought it would be permanent so I got rid of all my big clothes. After 8 years the weight crept back on and I had to buy new big clothes. Now I've had a bypass and am starting to wear the smaller ones again I saved. This time I'm gonna trust the process and as I outgrow them I'll donate them to Goodwill. My uniform scrubs I will alter because I am NOT buying new ones--I'm technically retired, so I'm too cheap to spend the money on them!
  8. 22 pounds. It fell right off, but now I am in a stall already...I'm not cheating at all, but the scales not moving.

    3rd day post-op (board newbie)

Dale P--you got this! You are at an advantage over lots of us here since you are already physically active. The pounds are gonna melt right off of you! I hope you took "before" pictures because we are gonna see great results from you, I know it! If the chocolate shakes are repulsive (they were to me, also) find some Isopure zero carb protein drinks. They are clear, not viscous at all, and go down smoothly. Sugar free popsicles are also a godsend. Good luck--keep us posted!

    Coffee

Decaf coffee should be fine. My doc even lets us have regular, as long as it's not excessive! It's not easy to find a great tasting decaf...I had one at Starbucks and I usually hate their coffee, but it was a Pike Place decaf and it tasted pretty good-maybe because it was my first cup of coffee following surgery!
  11. For me it took about 6 days before everything stopped hurting, The gas pain was worst than the actual surgery. Try to move around as much as you can. Make sure you are drinking SLOWLY-spasms might be a sign of taking too big of sips. Did your doc give you any medicine for your heartburn? She should have. Hang in there, most of us have "buyers remorse" after our surgery. Once you feel better and the weight starts coming off you'll be happy you did this, It WILL get better!
  12. Is the skin red? I got cellulitis during a previous surgery, and man, it hurts! Just the weight of a tee shirt made it hurt. Have your doc check it out.
  13. Wow, Jake-if it weren't for the ink on your right arm matching I woulda thought there was no way that was the same guy. You are doing great!

    another d*mn ulcer

And which stomach is it in? Your pouch or your remnant?
  15. Yeah, that's kinda what I'm doing. I like the idea of don't find out, 'cause if you DON'T dump you might start eating a lot of sugar again. I was just curious what it was like.

Foods you can no longer tolerate

Can I say what I CAN eat now? Eggs! I had that lap band for 10 years and couldn't eat eggs. Now they are my go-to protein and I love them!! I haven't found anything I can't stomach yet, but I'm not off total restrictions yet.
  17. Ha! I wasn't thinking about the porch pirates!! I should put my grungiest sweatpants and hope someone steals them!

    No longer losing!

From reading all the posts here, it seems like three months is famous for a stall. Keep your faith in the process, maybe increase your exercise a tad, and it will break. How often are you weighing? Especially if you are stalled you probably should only weigh weekly instead of daily so you don't get frustrated daily. Hang in there!
  21. Welcome to the other side! I had a blood sugar spike also, but my IV was D5W so that's not unusual. Sounds like you are on the mend...keep us posted here!
  22. That's what Goodwill is for!
  23. Recidivist, you look great! I can see you are a vocalist--has losing the weight changed your singing voice at all? I sing in a large local chorale and while I've only lost 20 pounds I find my breath control is easier. But I'm certainly not a soloist like you are so I'm not too concerned about sounding different.
  24. OMG we have been invaded by the Incredible Shrinking Men!!! Hotness all around! Seriously, Nenes and Viking, y'all look wonderful.
