Bhageerah got a reaction from Janet610 in August Sleevers-How are you doing??
So its been a little over 6 weeks since surgery, and I officially know that I have made the right decision. I am down almost 60 pounds. My blood pressure is normal, endurance is way up, joints feel better, and I am much happier! I am back to eating normal foods and am working on eating slowly and paying close attention to what my body is telling me so I do not end up overeating and know when to stop. I know that one "normal" fork full of food is too much especially when you are close to being full. Overeating does not control me I am currently in control of it and it feels good. It feels great to fit in clothes that I have not been able to put on my behind in YEARS! What even feels more amazing is donating all of the largest size clothes and knowing that I will not need them anymore.

As of this week I finally hit a normal BMI and i promised myself when that time came I would finally share some pictures. By the way, I still do not like having my picture taken but before I hid behind everyone and because I was tall it was easy to hide the rest of me. Now I definitely am willing to get in the shot and I no longer cringe when I see the pictures.
The only pics I could find before surgery were taken on a cruise with my hubby, Son and Granddaughter. These were taken 1 month before my bypass.

My after was taken earlier today, down 137lbs and finally at a BMI of 24.9

This is the easy part, just relax and let it flow! As long as you are doing this for the right reasons you will be fine. My appointment took about 45 minutes from the point that I walked in the door. I did not have to do any extensive paperwork whatsoever and the process was pretty easy and painless!

As has already been said, walk and sip, you will be ok, I was only in the hospital for 9 hours and then I was on my way home. And I understand the pain that you are in, it will get better! If it gets too out of hand call your Dr office and see what they say. It will be painful for a few days but you can do it! Sorry to hear about the lack of support but you have quite a bit of support here! You are now officially part of the "family" and we take care of our own!!!

Bhageerah reacted to BigDog Bryan in Sleeve VS RNY (Any advice welcome!)
I chose the sleeve as the right choice for me. This is a VERY personal choice, and you need to look at what are the important things to YOU. The sleeve and RNY will both get you to within sniffing distance of your goal weight, but the difference in this aspect is time to goal. The RNY is faster to goal, the Sleeve will still get you there - one takes 1-2 years, the other 1.5-4 in most cases.
The RNY reroutes your digestive tract, so there will be malabsorption that can cause problems with certain medications and supplements. The Sleeve leaves your digestive tract in place and in use, so there is less of an issue on this front. This was the main reason that I chose the Sleeve - it was what I Wanted to do. I have lost a substantial amount (from a 5X to a 2X shirt, from a 53 to a 37 waist) in the last 2 years (Surgiversary is 10/21) and I am making the additional changes to finish the job (XL shirt and a 34 waist is the Goal). I am VERY happy with my decision, and You need to be Happy with yours!!!

ABSOLUTELY!!! Cream of wheat is still soft, just wait until you eat something that has some density to it, just do yourself a favor and do like the NUT or Dr tells you and take small bites and take your time eating. You will be amazed at how little you are able to eat. I am almost two months out and I still can not believe how little fills me up. Eating to fast hurts WAY too much and one "normal" forkful can mean the difference between being full and being absolutely miserable. Yes I have made that mistake as well! Small bites and take your time eating, it will save you a lot of pain.

Hi. I had surgery on Monday and can honestly say on my fifth day I feel so much better than on my second day. It gets better I promise. It's night and day better. Keep up the great work. We are both on our way to better things.

Honestly? It was just time. After yo-yo dieting since age 9, I realized it was my fat brain rationalizing so I could eat my favorite food drugs. I have a list of co-morbidities a mile long and am 6+ years out from hormone positive breast cancer. My oncologist has been encouraging me from the 5year survivor mark to get this surgery because it could make the difference between cancer coming back or remaining in NED (no evidence of disease).
I am now realistic that given my present anatomy, and a brain with a propensity to look for pleasure and gratification from foods, that I will always be fat and sick, and sick and tired without this surgery. I've decided I'd rather live a good life in whatever years I have left, than sit immobile in a chair, depending more and more on caregivers. I'm sick and tired of living to die and being in WTD status (waiting to die).

I was the same way post surgery, I NEVER had a problem keeping any food down, what is being said is the absolute truth. The liquids slide through even if it is a Protein Shake. The yogurt may stay with you for awhile but not long as it will slide right through as well. I had the same problem and thought that my sleeve was too large until I started doing some research and discovered what many here have told you. Once you start eating solid food you will QUICKLY discover how small your stomach is. Once you eat some real food you will see! I can only eat about 4oz over 30 minutes.

I chose to get the sleeve, for several reasons one of which is that with the RNY since you are rerouting things inside and are relying on more staples and sutures you are opening yourself for more issues as well as a issue named intususpeption which is something I have seen first hand and do not want! The sleeve keeps everything "original" except for the size of the stomach, that was my choice. I think that you need to sit down and look at the positives and negatives of both as well as the procedure itself and make the choice that is good and right for you. I am not going to advocate either since it is a personal choice. When I had my surgery I went in thinking that I wanted the band, but the Dr highly advised against it, I heeded their warning and chose the sleeve. Your Dr may have an aversion to a particular surgery for various reasons. If you are unsure schedule some time to sit down and talk to them to help you make the correct choice. Good luck!!!
PS we live in the same area, and my SIL is in management for Bon Secours and says that you are in great hands! She was trying to get me to go have my surgery there vs where I had mine done.

I'm an airline pilot, and we have to get an FAA physical every 6 months . If you don't pass your career is over. I hit 40 BMI, and was just barely pre-diabetic. My FAA medical examiner ( who also had VSG done about 2 years ago) gave me "the talk". He said if I kept going I wasn't going to pass my flight physicals much longer, and my career would be over. That was the kick in the butt I needed.

I will tell you that refried Beans were a meal that I was COMPLETELY looking forward to, I put some cheese and a little bit of taco sauce on them and was one happy man! After being able to do nothing but drink those shakes for two weeks it almost brought tears to my eyes the first spoonful of "real" food that hit my tastebuds! Its allowed so enjoy it, no apology needed!

My turning point for wls was my health. My ac1 was climbing higher, my cholesterol was getting higher,my blood pressure was getting higher and I had to be put on meds for these ailments. I had knee replacement on one knee and was told I need it on other knee.
I am 7 months post surgery and list 85 lbs. I am at my goal weight. Started at 220 lbs and now at 135lbs and still losing weight. I had blood work done and everything is normal. No more meds!!! My knees feel great!!! No surgery needed.
I am so Happy I made this decision !

Refried Beans with a little cheese and salsa were one of my go to meals during my pureed stage along with egg salad (pureed with a little mayo and dill relish) and the famous Ricotta Bake.

The moment that I started down this road was after I started having several health issues some of which my doctors could not even explain. I currently work as a Medic/Firefighter and was struggling with maintaining my weight as well as having to get new uniforms and was outgrowing those way to fast. I needed to get this under control, I lost my father due to problems that were related to his weight as well as issues acquired in Vietnam. I had to do better and had already tried quite a few diets and I actually was OVER the yo-yo weight loss/gain and trying the newest diet fads. I was sick and tired of being ashamed of my weight, or taking pictures with my shirt off, I was tired of barely fitting in a airplane seat, I was tired of not being able to get on amusement park rides due to my size. I was tired of sitting out on life and missing out on fun things with the family because I am ashamed of my weight. At one time I was down over 100 pounds and running a 5k in less than 27 minutes so I knew what it was like to be fit, I desired to go back to that point and get healthier. After trying another diet and gaining the weight back I decided to try this route and even though I am only a little over one month out from my surgery date I know that I have made the right decision and know that I am on the right track. I know I have this and am giving it everything that I have so I can live a longer happier life without the health issues that the excess weight brings with it!
