Katariina got a reaction from TaRena in September Bypass Buddies
I have had an easy recovery. Very few problems. I have lost about 40 pounds in less than 2 month and I am pretty happy with that. I keep losing about 2.5 pounds per week. I have discovered that Soups are my best friend and that I cannot tolerate anything with added sugar. I cannot handle red meat either unless it is meatball or something extremely soft like that. My typical lunch is two spoonful of mashed potatoes with a spoonful or two of canned tuna or a half a cup of chicken Soup. I don't really have any desire to eat cakes and candies because I know that it won't end well. I love this! This is the reason I chose bypass.

Katariina got a reaction from Orchids&Dragons in Gallbladder removal: warning for others
I had my bariatric bypass done about 7 months ago. I have lost about 85 pounds and everything has gone really well except that I still have trouble eating certain foods. A few days ago I suddenly got very severe stomach pain. First I thought that I just had too much to eat but the pain got really bad really quickly and I had to be rushed to the nearest hospital. It turned out that I had developed gallbladder stones and a few of them had traveled to my pancreas and caused a severe inflammation. My gallbladder was full of stones and had to be surgically removed. My surgery was 2 days ago and still my liver and pancreas blood work numbers are really bad. I am writing this to you to warn other people. I learnt that rapid weight loss often causes gallbladder stones and because of this surgeons used to remove gallbladder everytime they did bariatric bypass. Now since my gallbladder has been removed it is going to be somewhat harder for me to digest fatty food (not that I ate so much of them anyway) and I am afraid that a few of these sones are still floating around inside of me and may cause problems if they land on a place where they can block a way to pancreas etc. The pain associated with this problem was the worst pain I have every experiences. I gave birth to two boys without making a sound but I was screaming all the way to the hospital a few days ago. Please be smarter than me and ask your surgeon to remove your gallbladder during the bypass if possible. This organ is not necessary and can cause huge problems for you if you lose the weight fast like I did and can even cause life treatening infections in vital organs like liver, and heart. I am not writing this to scare people unnecessarily but to educate all of you so you don' t have to experience this.

Katariina got a reaction from FluffyChix in How Much Did/Do You Eat Post Bypass at Various Milestones
Funny how I have forgotten how much I was able to eat in the beginning but 6 month after my bypass I am still only able to eat about half a cup and many, many times I am able to eat only a spoonful or two and vomiting is quite common. I was severely dehydrated according to my doctor during the first 3-4 months. I am able to drink OK now and I am deeply grateful about that, but I am getting worried that I will continue my weight loss even when I don't want to anymore simply because I am unable to eat enough.

I saw my doc today. I was told that I am severely dehydrated and I have Protein in my urine due to the dehydration. It is really hard to get enough liquids inside me when I feel nauseated or vomit all the time. I have decided to give up on eating solids for now in order to get more Proteins and liquids. I really hope that I begin to tolerate food better soon.

It has been a little over 2 months since my bypass surgery. I thought that I would have a hard time eating unhealthy stuff like Cookies but would be able to tolerate small amounts of meat etc at this point. This is not the case. If I eat even a little bit of chicken, or fish I will be sick for hours and vomiting all the time. I cannot tolerate any Pasta, bread, or salad either. Yet, I have no problem eating a cookie. I was hoping that I could follow a healthy diet that would consist of things like grilled salmon with vegetables but no, my tummy loves mashed potatoes and cookies! I don't know what to do anymore. Should I take a step backwards and start drinking Protein Soups again? I am concerned that I am not getting enough Proteins. I have lost about 40 pounds so far and I am happy about that. It is only that I am having such a hard time finding lunch options that would not make me vomit.

Hi! I had my bypass on 9/5. I am 5'11' and in February i was over 285 lbs. On September the 5th, thanks to the pre-op diet i reached 250 lbs (-35lb in 7 months). I also became fully vegan in June. These past two months, since my surgery day, have been really interesting to me. Bean Soups are my best friends as well. I can have 1 full cup of them easily. I still drink 1 plant based Protein Shake a day (breakfast) and/or 1 plant based Protein Bar a day. I can eat more than I expected, and I tolerate small amount of sugar and fat. When i eat solid food, unless it is crunchy i can tolerate less than half a cup. I hurted my self 2-3 times by eating too fast and it was a very unpleasant sensation. I keep track of nutrients and calories. My surgeon is impressed by the fact that I daily reach around 70g of Proteins in less than 1000kcal. I am pretty happy. This morning my weight was 199 (-51 lbs in two months, - 86 since February) and I am about to get ready for my cycling class. Tomorrow I have another checkup and I'll go through some blood tests and stuff and I am confident they will be great. The past one were perfect and I have no issue with my Vitamins or Water input. Good luck to all of you. Here a couple of picture of before/after

According to the references I found, gastric bypass can be reversed for medical reasons alone and even in those cases the risks are very high. See e.g.
    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/02/can_bariatric_surgery_be_reversed.html
Thus, I believe that the doctors don't leave the unused parts there for the possibility of reversing it. The reasons must be something else. Those of you who are still planning, please ask your docs, I would really love to know.

For taste, I prefer Atkins shakes, for the see through stage use liquid Isopure. I hate the powders, they don't mix well and I live way too busy life to spend my time mixing and shaking, and washing a blender.

With the bypass you can a feeding tube places in the “old” stomach if you ever need urgent support with eating issues. With the sleeve you have enough stomach left they can use a regular feeding tube.

The unused part of the stomach still produces acid and stuff to help digest food. It reconnects down lower in your intestines to help digest the food that goes through your pouch. And like others said, it still produces hormones, though I'm not sure that's the main reason it's left. I think it's there to improve digestion, since your pouch alone doesn't make enough acid to do the job. That's the way my surgeon explained it, at least.

According to my knowledge this surgery cannot be reversed. ALso, most of the hormones in this unused area are there to make you feel hungrier, so I can certainly live without them. If they were that significant, then why would they remove this section is sleeve. So confused..

Katariina got a reaction from Kristi Jacobs in Serious about MEXICO but many questions and concerns
I had my surgery with Pompeii Surgical and I have nothing but positive things to say about them. Dr. Quinones was excellent and I was walking around 2 hours after my bypass. The clinic was very clean and I felt really safe there. What truly was amazing was how well the patient coordination team and especially Debbie took care of me and my teen son who accompanied me. He was taken out shopping etc. so he didn't get bored. After 2 days in the clinic we spent a few days in an ocean front villa that had all the food I needed and I got trained in what to eat etc. They visited us 2 times a day to make sure we were ok. I returned home on Wednesday last week and they have called me several times since then. All this for $5,500. They gave me a surgery date 3 weeks from when I contacted them first. Cannot recommend them enough.

I asked this question from my surgeon and got no answer so I am asking again: why is it that the "left over part of your stomach in removed in gastric sleeve but the same exact part is left in your body when it is is not used for anything in gastric bypass? The same goes with the part of the small intestines that are no longer used. Why is it left in the body? Doesn't it carry a risk for infection when we leave in our body something that is not used for anything in our body? What if there are still some food particles in the part f the intestine that is left there?

Everyone is super friendly, surgeon is highly knowledgeable, and skillful. Tomorrow I will be released from here and I go their ocean front recovery center for 3 days. I feel like I am on vacation!

My date is 8th of September. I am excited, scared, regretting my decision, proud of my decision and everything else every day. Feels almost like being pregnant with the emotional roller coaster. Come to think of it I even have the big belly!
