    Hello pp11150330!
I'm in the same boat as you are! Essentially the exact same! haha! My surgery is September 7th so - only 7 days prior to yours!
I have struggled with this issue for a long while as well. I was letting my anxiety get the best of me however, I have come to the terms that I'm not going to tell anyone that is not close to me. WLS is still a taboo in this country unfortunately and I'm not sure why people have to be so upset about someone else finding their silver lining. The fact is - people like it when you're down because it makes them feel that much more "up" - if you will. For me, telling people "I'm doing a high protein/working out 3-5 days a week" is not a lie. Its the honest truth. They do not need to know what choices I made with my own body as far as surgery goes. I'm not even going to tell my "skinny" friends. Do I think they would judge me? Probably not. Do I think they actually might be pretty supportive? Probably so. However, I do not feel comfortable telling them. At the end of the day, its what I'm comfortable with. They might be uncomfortable with me losing weight and keeping it off however, that is THEIR cross to bear. Not mine. If I let them in on my insecurity with it then - it becomes my cross to bear to an extent. (its really not my cross to bear even if I told them however, I know my mind and my anxieties/insecurities and I know it would get to me thus becoming my cross.) At the end of the day, its honestly no one's business aside from your own. I find strength in knowing that I'm keeping it to myself now that I'm so close I can taste it. I find strength because I'm finally going to get my silver lining and I'm not going to let anyone take that away from me! Don't let them steal your joy because of their comments. My weight has always been an extreme sensitivity for me. I'm not a sensitive person believe it or not however, that is my "kryptonite" so to speak. Not gonna let them have or know about it. Also, I might add that in all of my extreme creeping... I mean research... haha! On like Instagram or twitter or youtube....at one point, nearly all of them have said, "I wish I would have kept this quiet at least in the beginning so I can tackle my own demons without other people putting them back in my face/giving them power." So, yeah if you want to tell them later because you think you'll be a blessing to them and maybe they can then find their silver lining then absolutely do so however, I think there is something to be said for someone/people who have been through and are wishing they hadn't!
I hope this helps dear! If you need anything else or have any other questions don't be afraid to hit me up! I'm attaching a couple of images that I hope you are able to grab some strength from! Have a blessed day!

I don't think you were ness playing the devil's advocate! I think you're just being very realistic!
I agree with them still talking anyway however, I still feel like - its on them at that point. Thats their brains and thats something they are gonna have to work through. I have enough problems of my own trying to get through life. Don't want/need to take theirs on either! lol.

This topic is moving so fast, it's already hard to keep up with who's gone through and who's still waiting and the month is just starting. I just wanted to say, good luck to everyone having the surgery this week, stay strong for all of us dealing with the pre-op diet, and hang in there to those of you anxiously awaiting the end of the month.
As for myself, I am 1 week away from surgery and getting plenty sick of Protein Shakes. We can do this!

This was such a good post for me to read! It was like several of you were inside my head! I had kept my circle of trust very tight until a coworker stalked my calendar. I thought my appointment was marked as private. [emoji849] So then came the questions and the unsolicited advice. This is the only reason I didn't want to tell my coworker's. I know I'm part of their gossip when I'm not around. But you know what? It's okay. I'm doing this for me, my children and my health. To hell with them if they think I'm making a bad choice.

Went to my pre op nutritional class today! I assumed my program has the two week liquid diet. Totally doesn't. I almost crapped myself when she said I just had to do it the day before. However, just with my medical background I will be doing some variation of the liver shrinking diets despite them telling me I don't have to. I don't wanna bleed out or get a knick! That wouldn't be fun. On top of that, due to me thinking that I had to do the 2 week pre op liquid diet....I already had my food funerals. Might as well get in the right head space since I thought thats what I had to do anyway.
Oh also, since its official that my date IS set - we went and booked the hotel! Its getting SO close and SO real! Holy moly! The nerves are starting to hit me! Thanks for listening to me ramble! lol.

let's just be honest and talk about the REAL reason most people get sleeve over RNY....
they are scared of not being able to eat as much as they want after RNY. and with the sleeve, they think they can get *most* of the benefit of RNY and also be able to eat more.
they want to have their cake and eat it too. (and that might be the most appropriate use of that phrase in history)

    i respectfully disagree.
the risk of dying during surgery is the same at around 0.5%. making both very safe, "routine" procedures. so your "simpler operation" rings irrelevant to me. i guess it's relevant if your surgeon sucks or if you're doing it on the cheap in a Mexican alleyway, but that's another issue.
risk of short-term complications? slightly higher with RNY, yes, but you have to consider relative risk. no complication goes over 5% (leak, stricture, etc). there's risk of leak with VSG too, it's a bit lower at 3%. now, if that 2% is enough for you to choose a less effective bariatric surgery? that's your choice. i guess i have a different calculus when it comes to those things.
the long-term risks you cite are rare and the patient has to purposely disobey basic rules of common sense to trigger. like going back to eating way way too much. don't want ulcers? don't take NSAIDS. it's quite simple, if you reach for Tylenol instead of Advil, your risk of ulcers is negligible. but the average American is stupid as hell, so even simple directions like that are routinely ignored. Petersen hernia? most studies have this occurrence as low as 1%, and is virtually not an issue with an experienced surgeon who knows where to connect the roux anastomosis.
now, you want to talk about life-altering long term risk? let's talk GERD. which i've seen studies range from 20-40% of VSG patients!!!!! this can range from merely annoying to life-crushing and needing revision to, yes, RNY. this message board is FILLED with these patients and my surgeon says about 20% of his operations are revisions from sleeve to RNY. now THAT is risk.
and perhaps the biggest risk not talked about is that of permanence. to me, it's very RISKY to do the sleeve because your stomach is thrown in the trash bin and it is completely irreversible. the RNY is reversible. ergo, much much less risk.
again, you mention the sleeve "doesn't alter the anatomy". first of all i don't understand this argument. what's wrong with altering anatomy if it makes your body perform better? by that logic, getting glasses to help you see is "altering your anatomy". getting a heart bypass if you have heart disease is "altering your anatomy". is this a God, intelligent design thing? i'm not going there. all i know is that cutting your stomach out (VSG) is very much altering your anatomy. much more than RNY which leaves it there to be a perfectly healthy functioning body part capable of getting back on the playing field if need be.
another risk of the VSG? not reaching your goal weight. and isn't that why we're doing this? the fact is RNY results in 70-75% excess weight loss on average. and that average is brought down a lot by a huge sample population of people who are too dumb to behave after surgery. VSG is, with a smaller and more motivated sample set of patients, at best 60-65%. i guarantee you that as time goes on and more and more VSG patients are tracked, that number will go down even further.

I have the Fitbit Aria which is not only a lovely design, but syncs with many apps and auto recognizes you by weight.
Fun fact, the battery had died on it (it told me for a month but I was lazy) so it forgot the last couple months. I got on and had lost so much it didn't remember who I was! Gotta love bariatrics.

I'm having bypass, with a hiatal hernia fix thrown in, and on the 19th, not the 18th as I said earlier. I'm simply horrible at trying to keep dates straight.
A couple of you posted book titles. I've downloaded bunches of them during the last 2 years, and some I loved, some I hated. The Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve was the first one I read, and I thought it did a good job of answering most of my practical questions, plus gave me a basis for really thinking through my decisions. Never Binge Again was interesting and made some very good points, but was a little simplistic. I definitely will use some of the techniques in that book, though. The Weight Loss Surgery Coping Companion drove me crazy and I couldn't make myself finish reading it. Plenty of really bad writing, with examples left incomplete, and lots of simplistic thinking (if it was as easy as asking yourself if you're really hungry, none of us would be obese.). The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients may be my post-surgery bible for a while. Also, Daily Inspirations for Weight Loss Surgery Patients is a nice little daily meditations book, and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery is a great starter cookbook for those of us who are foodies and afraid we'll never eat fine food again.
I don't start my pre-op diet until the 5th, so I'm spending this last week or so eating all the farmer's market produce I can get my hands on. It just occurred to me last night as I was cleaning out one of my kitchen cupboards that I should put family on notice that I'm not going to host Thanksgiving this year. I don't think I'll miss doing so, either. It's time to pass the torch on to my adult children.
