Depends on the person and how they change their relationship with food, their discipline in working out and how well they stick to the program.
For me, NOT accurate at all!
Less than a year after gastric sleeve I went from almost 300 lbs to 115. Been maintaining 120 +/- 2 lbs for over 4 1/2 years. That link says that I'd only get to 180 lbs, lol!

Any advice for someone who is ten days out?
anyone else scheduled for the end of this month?

I can not believe I am at my 1 yr anniversary already. Seems just like yesterday I was getting ready to go into surgery. I have to say best decision I made. I am down 80 pounds as of today:) My family have been very supportive from the start of my journey and I am so, grateful to all of them. I could not have done it with out them. Looking to get the other 20 pounds off and I will be at my goal I set for myself.
Congratulations to everyone on here to becoming a healthier you!!!

If you were my family member, I would tell you to eat the same way you would post op. See if you can drop those extra pounds on your own.. and if you make it a permanent dietary change, then you likely won't gain it back. There is no harm in trying it this way.
Surgery really is designed for people that have closer to 100lbs to lose. The complication rate for the surgery is low, but complications can be severe.. so a basically healthy person with only 50lbs to lose.. it just may not be worth it...
Just because you aren't exercising with a unit anymore doesn't mean you can't join a gym on your own (you'll need to post op anyway...)
The thing with surgery is, yes, it knocks off the excess pounds in short order.. but you'll still have to watch what you eat and exercise forever afterwards. So why not just do that now?
    Sample menu:
Breakfast: 4oz. cottage cheese and a piece of fruit
Lunch: 2 eggs and 6oz black Beans with salsa (can change type of beans as you prefer)
Dinner: 4oz of meat or fish, unlimited non-starchy veggies
Snack: 2oz salted nuts or seeds
Drink at least 64oz of non/low-caloric fluids.
Low sodium v8 and/or coconut Water will give additional potassium.
Take a Multivitamin, because this diet is lacking sufficient B-vitamins and Calcium.< /b>
My husband (who has not had surgery) started eating this way, and has already lost 23lbs on it, without exercise. It's simple and effective.

I just had my my first salad a week ago and will be three months post op tomorrow. I was not a salad fanatic previously but ate them. OMG! I enjoyed it SO much. It took me two days to eat it but it was awesome! I had spring mix, baby kale greens, tomatoes, cucumber kalamata olives, pickled beets, banana peppers, bread and butter pickles, crispy onions, salad toppings, Bacon, cheese, crushed croutons, and Blue Cheese dressing. I get a couple of pieces of everything and cut it up onto the lettuce leaves.

~stay off the scale the first month
~all Protein is not created equal. Eat real food over shakes and bars when possible
    ~don't compare yourself to anyone
~if you haven't dealt with your food issues before surgery you'll be faced with them after whether you want to deal with it or not.
    ~move your body
~I am no different than I was the day before surgery in most ways (which is ok cuz I like me).
~no magic or cure-this is for life and without making the changes I need to nothing will change long term.
~I have no regretted this surgery once, I haven't always enjoyed how I felt, but zero regrets (and zero complications)
~this is a wonderful opportunity that I feel grateful for.
This is just my list in two short months. I'm sure I'm missing lots of things. What have others learned?

My experience is a lot like Rosana's.
I had some minor nausea right after the surgery but they gave me a patch and that made things much better. I basically only ate ice chips the first day. I tried a bite of Jello and tried some broth but they didn't taste good. The second day I was put on full liquids so I had yogurt and pudding for Breakfast. I went home around noon and stayed on my pain meds for another 24 hours. Liquids have been a challenge but finally easier today. I felt really empty, not hungry just empty, until yesterday. I made some pudding with Protein and that helped take away that feeling. Honestly I wasn't walking around as much as I should but finally got out yesterday and that made a huge difference to relieve the bloated feeling in my abdomen area. The gas pain was never that bad for me, basically discomfort. Overall things have gone pretty smoothly. I have no regrets.
Good luck, you are going to do great!

Arielle reacted to Anna8522 in What do I need to buy and have in the house on day one post op?
Ask the dietician attached to the surgical team for a meal plan. and stick to the level she suggests. so free fluids first, then the next level. then soft food - I had low calorie jellies ready and pureed fruit (baby puree level). For me she suggested that I get in plain yoghurt as she knew I liked it. and eat Protein first. my protein was mainly chicken, fish, eggs, and cottage cheese.
But my greatest help was fresh unsweetened pineapple juice, to sip. It helped rid me of all the foamy mucous phlegm that was making life a misery for the first three weeks at home. Fresh pineapple juice really saved the day. My Doctor suggested it and it worked a treat after three hours of sipping it , a little at a time, I finally gained relief from all the vomiting of foamy phlegm.
Here is why - fresh pineapples contain digestive a digestive enzyme in them called, "Bromelain".
Bromelain helps break down hard to digest Proteins in our digestive tract naturally so we do not end up with gas, bloating, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, burping or Constipation. - enzyme bromelain is known to reduce phlegm and mucus in throat

well I have never had a lap ban, this is something you really need to be sure you want to do. Ask your self if you would be willing to live with the worst case scenario. Lets say you do have the issues you talked about. would you still be willing to work around those issues in order to reach your health goals? I think that is the bigger question.

I was also hungry shortly after surgery, despite being allowed to eat by day 4. Turns out my acid reducers weren't working and it wasn't really hunger but acid I was feeling.

Congrats on your date! I'm 2 days post op right now. Biggest thing for me is walking and taking pain meds on time. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions, I'd rather have an answer than not know. Having a pillow to hold over stitches is so helpful for support (been using my pillow pet personally). You'll do great!

Before surgery? Oh yea your 100% hungry. After? You will think you are hungry but you won't be. I thought I was hungry 3-6 days post op. Then I realized I was bored to death. The hunger went away. Now I have to remind myself to eat but that doesn't mean my tastebuds died. I made 3 diff kinda of pulled pork, little cakes, and a cucumber salad last night for a party. All I wanted to do was smash my face into it. Lol so keep in mind your brain talks to you when your stomach is silent.

I am 3 days in and no hunger. Its really weird because I should be dying with what I am actually consuming but I feel totally fine. It's those damn TV commercials I want to kill! I always say to my daughter when she needs to eat that she is Hangry. (Hunger make her Angry) So although I am not hungry I miss eating. I assume this is part of the process I believe this will help me give food less of an important place in my life. Each of us has a different journey and each of us has different relationships with food. I think its awesome to be one of those people who has to think if they ate! Instead of the person who planned their day around their meals. Good Luck!

My surgery was scheduled today!!! August 29th! All they said was no alcohol or aspirin two weeks before. I have not been dieting but now that I have a date I eating about 1400-1500 calories a day so I can lose a little before the surgery. I've only counted calories for 2 days and I'm starving. Not emotional, boredom or out-of-habit hungry BUT Real body hunger that's distracting and annoying! For those who have had the surgery, are you a lot less hungry?

Because it's not new and exciting and sexy. You aren't getting complements and new clothes and firsts. Because you STILL have to keep watching what you eat and drink and your activity level. Forever. And you can eat more and it's oh so easy to slide back into bad habits and eat sliders that go down easily.

First, there isn't the excitement and motivation from the scale, looser clothing or others complimenting.

Second, it's a fine line between losing & gaining, at least for me. VERY difficult to find that line and be able to stay comfortably there, for life. You don't want to feel deprived as that will lead to old habits & regain. You need to always be mindful of eating/exercising without it consuming you. You need to find an exercise program that you can do consistently and your relationship to food must be eat to live NOT live to eat.
In the losing phase, we sometimes feel like our way of eating/exercising is a temporary way of life until goal. It's not, this is for life if we want to maintain.

Rosanna, those gas bubbles get better. I drink all day long...starts out with little sips, but I can drink more at a time now. Take it slow and give yourself time. I'm so glad you posted and you're doing well!

It's probably because I don't work, and have no friends, so rarely come into contact with people. But, at least it keeps me from getting "Did you gain weight?"-ed!
