    Non Scale Victories

oh lord this one was an eye opener for me. I was the guy that was always hot. I wore shorts and tee shirts in December. THEN i dropped the weight and i freeze what is left of my ass off now. I own 6 long sleeve shirts now. That is 6 more than i ever owned before. Being cold and sitting making my tailbone hurt are the 2 biggest surprises from the sleeve.
  2. Pot doesn't actually make you hungery. It makes food taste better that leads to you eating more of it. Chemo patients report that food has no taste so they dont eat much. Pot makes things taste "better" and leads to better overall nutrition in certain groups that under consume calories due to medical issues. Cancers eat sugar and will very quickly deplete yours and this leaves you weak and basically malnourished.

  4. I hope everyone is doing well.

Had a wedding in Reno this last week but managed to have a good time anyway (lol)

My numbness that i thought was a pulled muscle was a rare but not unheard of side effect of rapid weight loss. It is a pinched nerve probably caused by the loss of fat around the nerve that allowed the nerve bundle to shift.

weight has been steady and holding within half a pound these last weeks so it looks like i have the correct calories dialed in for maintenance.

I can still do my treadmill time but weight lifting is off the table for now. So more lower body work and hopefully the pinched nerve will resolve with the stretching and time.

Got Scottish games to go to this weekend so looking forward to a fun if long day.

Wore a Suit for the first time in 20 years, can't say i enjoyed it but i survived the tie.

Congrats on the suit and tie! Welcome back. Now post a lot! Or Alot..;) Hope you get to feeling better soon!

That muscle thing is weird. Thanks for sharing. I hope it resolves soon; I know you want to get back to the lifting. Congrats on handling maintenance so well. Seems like most people struggle for a while to hit the right calorie intake.

    Not going to be Popular...

i also eat low carb i was just responding to the fake sugar issue. i eat less than 10 grams of sugar(most days under 5) and 50 grams of carbs per day and the carbs are from my veggies. i gave up flour and all its products cause for me the issue was and is Carbs. If i consume processed carbs i get hungry not full. with my restriction i can feel full to the point of being sick but be starving in my head if i eat processed carbs. This is me and others my have no or less issues but i know how i feel when i eat them so i just dont eat them and i an so much happier now when i eat.

    Not going to be Popular...

I wish i could agree with such a blanket statement but alas no i can't. Anytime you make a blanket statement about health and think it will apply to all you are starting from wrong and getting worse. I avoid sugar to control Insulin, not blood sugar, some fake sugars while they show no spike in blood sugar have been proven to spike your insulin without the increase in blood sugar. When you spike insulin you block fat burning. We relate blood sugar to insulin cause it is an easy test but they are not the same thing. when you taste sweet your brain sends signals and you release insulin in anticipation of incoming sugar even if it just fake sweet. all that being said i dont avoid all fake sugar i just want to understand what it does, everything does something, inside me. With knowledge comes power (joke reference here) don't live in fear of it all but do understand what it does and ask yourself if you want to pay that price.

    Losing too fast?

I lost weight very fast, 49 pounds first month and a steady 8-10 pounds every month after till i hit 160 then my body just slowed the weight loss way down and i am working towards increasing calories to reach maintenance calories. Don't worry you will eat more as you get further out and your body will settle in to a good weight with time. If your labs are good and your doctor is not saying anything don't worry and enjoy. some of your fear is you have never been here before and it all feels like too much but you will get used to new image and it will feel and look normal with time. Body image can mess with your perception of what is too much so use your doctor and there staff to judge that not your own self image till you have time to get used to the new you.
  8. 13+ months out now and i still get full very fast. The amount of food i can eat in 1 meal hasn't changed in the last 3-5 months. I am glad i still feel restricted. It is a very good reminder of the limits i live under and helps to prevent those oh what the hell moments. I have had 2 "incidents" in the last 13 months when i tried to much food and i hope to not have a third. Some have mentioned pain with their restriction but what i consider restricted has never had pain with it other than that to dam full feeling.
  9. So after a busy and hectic day yesterday i stepped onto the scale this morning and low and behold i had reached my final goal of normal BMI range.

The Doc thinks i have pinched the nerve in my elbow and that is causing the tricep numbness.

She is sending me out to an Orthopedic specialist just to see if they have any ideas but since there is no pain involved  i don't see letting them cut on me.  To much downside for so little upside.

Thank you all for your support during the last year.

I do lurk around from time to time and read your posts so stay true to your program and go get that success you all deserve.

    Nutrition help

at 5 weeks you are just getting to the point that the protein gets easier. The food choices start to open up from here on out. Just eat the protein first. If you are a coffee drinker the premier liquid goes great in morning coffee (and the next 4 cups after that ) My personal opinion but that 50% target listed for carbs is a bad idea. 50 grams per day, ok , but 50% of calories is a recipe for slow weight loss and continued carb addiction. ok thats my anti carb rant for the month of August (but Sept is only a week away) so good luck and i hope you have great success.
  12. So i had my 1 year follow up and i am off all supplements with the exception of a Centrum Silver.

All my blood tests were normal and my blood pressure was 107/70.

My surgeon was of course very happy with the level of weight loss and was very positive about the low carb diet i choose to live by now.

My tore tricep has left a numb section about 3 inches long by half inch wide along my tricep.

getting a referral to look at that issue.

Surgeon suggested i stop chasing the "normal BMI" but i haven't decided yet, it is the last goal i set for myself and i am so so close.

I hope all of you are having a great summer and i wish you all the success you deserve.

yea it moves ok. it is just numb like your mouth feels after the dentist gives you those shots.

no pain just the odd numbness.

Great news on the follow up. The tricep issue sounds not so nice. I guess numb is better than in pain though. I have a similar issue on my right thigh - the whole top and outside of it is completely numb but I was told it is from a pinched nerve. I would think after losing 90lbs that the nerve would no longer be pinched, but nope, still numb.

You are doing awesome and are an inspiration for me!

  14. So today is my 1 year Anniversary. I have lost 160lbs as of this morning (95.8% of excess weight) i am off 2 blood pressure meds and my Metformin My sleep Apnea is gone and my memory has slowly gotten better over the last year. I am around 1 month (at current monthly weight loss) from switching to maintenance i plan to post a current picture later today. i will add the pre op pic that is already there if i can figure out how to get both together. I want to thank all of you for the comradery during the last year. Reading everyone's journey made mine easier to work thru and help me get a sense of what this was like from so my different places. I know i was very lucky- first just getting the surgery as it is harder to get approved than i realized. I had a very pain free post op and i see now that is not always the case I also landed on the above average side of the average weight loss for this type of surgery This has nothing to do with calories in because we all know how little we can eat post op. As a man i got luckier(unfair) in the hormone dept than you ladies and since weight loss and gain is Hormone driven i have come to believe it is just a bit easier for men to maximize the results from the sleeve. Once again you ladies are forced to work harder and longer to get the same I am going to miss you all but i will not be around a day to day basis anymore. My plan after today is drop back in a few months and let you know how maintaining my weight is going. I wish all of you the best and know that no matter if the weight loss comes quick or slow you can get there if you hold true to the plan and stay faithful to yourself that you are worth all the effort you put into this and don't let anyone tell you anything different. good luck

    Eating, yet not hungry?

Glad to see you are aware of the weak point in your mental game. Post op is very much a mental game. Whether you lose weight fast or slow you will reach your goal if you win the post-op mental battles. You see this so your are at least aware. Now what to do about it. Avoid situations that you can. even just changing rooms if food is around carry a drink - coffee or water to give yourself something to sip and occupy yourself Distract yourself and finally just stay aware don't let yourself run on auto without thought in situations like this. This not easy and takes practice to become habit but the good habits you develop now will be what carries you thru in a year or two when the hunger is back and the restriction is less. good luck

i thought so. processed food is killing us. you can hammer 1k calories at carls jr and call it lunch but 1k calories of steamed veggies would be next impossible to consume in 1 sitting.

if you eat real food the calorie count is done naturally. Its the processed boxed and packaged stuff that causes so much grief in our bodies.

    Food in Food out

if you dont want to go the medical route all i can suggest is 1. a food elimination diet to try to find any trigger foods - start with everything lactose or made with milk by-products. this takes a while but can give valuable clues to what you personally cant process 2. google highest fiber foods and add the top 5 to your diet daily and really jack up your daily fiber intake. fiber keeps us regular but it does work both ways it keep you regular not fast not slow. this also takes some getting used to if you have not eaten this level of fiber in the past.

    Food in Food out

from what i read here on the forums its more likely a problem of not being able to go. have you talked to your doctor? a testing of a stool sample would be a very good idea along with complete blood panel. how long has this been an issue. have you traveled outside the US recently have you gone camping or hiking and drank water from a stream or drank well water. these are all things that might have introduced a bug to your system that is causing this. seek medical care right away.
  19. my energy levels are up i don't fall asleep every time i sit down (sleep apnea issue) i can do things now i haven't in years i don't look at every situation with an eye towards will i fit - literally clothes are cheaper all good things what negatives do i find - for me i will always miss bread but it is my gateway food back to where i was so its gone from my life
  20. they will notice your healthy diet choices tell everyone the same thing I am on a medically supervised weight loss plan - i stopped eating sugars and lowered my carbs and now that i am feeling better and my weight has gone down i am exercising more to improve my overall health. end of storey

    need help or suggestions

use food app to track everything you eat cut out added sugars and keep all sugars under 10 grams per day no fruit cut your carb grams to 50 per day and they should all come from your veggies. no snacking do not consume any calories after dinner of any kind. Never eat if you are not hungry if nothing else get moving (walking) at least 30 minutes per day make your food choices from the 3 walls of your grocery store fruit and veggies (no fruit while stalled) Meats Dairy then use the 4th wall (the exit) avoid the middle of the store and if you have medical issues that you did not list in your very short post just ignore all this. good luck
  22. get a food tracking app -myfitnesspal is very popular around here ramp up your water consumption remove sugar from your diet cut processed carbs out - that's the bread and pasta eat foods found on the 3 walls of the grocery store - not the middle isles and spend the time researching this procedure and checking your insurance requirements - it takes 6 months to a year after you officially start this process so you have some time ahead of you. i am a very big (not so big now) fan of the sleeve but you need to know what your buying into. good luck and those things i listed above they are even more important Post op so work towards them now and it will make the changes you need to make easier after the surgery.
  23. I know this will not be popular.
