kathlizzle got a reaction from Rosie’om in Soft foods stage.... recipe ideas?
Hi Shantel. First, congrats on your weight loss surgery . I'm just dipping my toes in the Water of lean meats too. I found a cream based Soup (i.e.cream of mushroom, chicken, etc) is a nice when you add chicken thats been baked with water or barbeque sauce. For example, my husband makes the most delicious baked chicken breasts. Place one or more skinless chicken breasts in a glass or metal baking pan. Cover the raw chicken with 1/2 cup of BBQ Sauce and a 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce. Cover pan with foil and bake for 1.5 hours at 350°F.
After the chicken cools, I cut it into thin strips and store it in the cooked sauce.
I take 1/4 cup of the soup (which I've prepared with milk for more protein) and add a few small pieces of chicken, some canned green Beans, and sometimes part of a plain baked potato. Use whatever is the right texture for your stage of recovery. This little recipe has saved me! I get texture from the chicken (chew, chew, chew) and a welcome bit of flavor from the green beans. The potato actually soothes my stomach. Hope this idea can help you.

My husband was not for it. I did it anyway and he supports me in my surgery recovery. Be confident in your choice and eventually he will have to join you or be left out of your remarkable journey.

Check with your nutritionist (NUT) to be sure. My NUT said 80 grams of Protein and 64 oz or more of Water a day. Tough to do with nausea, pain, and lack of appetite. My point is, along your recovery journey, check with your medical provider first. They have lots of experience and tons of sound ideas for you to try. They can encourage you and put your mind at ease. I like this forum for shared experiences but caution people from providing medical or diet advice.
PS i am with you on being sick of Protein Shakes. Gag!

    Hi Pakko,
I feel your pain. I also agree with Sandra. Please contact your surgeon. I know it sounds crazy, but they are there for you physically and emotionally as this journey involves body and mind changes. There are support groups associated with most medical organizations who provide this surgery. New friends are waiting to be made in those groups right in your community. Make the call to your doctor on Monday. They will take your concerns seriously and provide resources to help you. You are not alone (unless you do not follow up with your doctor).
Let us know how you are doing.

I told very few people. People just say such negative things to you about weight loss surgery. At the end of the day it's your business not theirs and you shouldn't worry about keeping it secret x

It does get better, really. By degrees each day. Allow yourself time to heal from anesthesia, medications, and the trauma of surgery. Relax, rest, and follow Dr. Orders.

Today a stranger called me skinny... Sitting in a doctor's office a woman I used to be comparable in size to asked me to trade seats with her because I had (out of old habit) sat down in a bigger chair without arms and the only seat left was a smaller chair with arms.
She walked over and blushingly embarrassed and asked if I would mind moving over to the other seat so she could sit down too. I smiled politely and told her of course. She joked that some chairs were for skinny people like me and some were for fat people like her.
I felt the hurt in what she said. I remembered it, I knew the bitter taste of those words.
I moved that armed chair closer to the unarmed chair and told her a year ago I would have needed that bigger chair. I told her I understood and that I was sorry I was thoughtless enough to even require her to ask me to trade in the first place.
We talked for a while. I told her about my RNY bypass and how in 11 months I was down 120lbs. I lost a person. I told her that in my head I still look for the bigger seats because that person from a year ago still lives in my head. I only see a real difference in pictures. The biggest change I made for myself because of that realization was to take lots of pictures. Everyday I show myself the progress I have made because I can't see it in the mirror that clearly. I showed her my pictures and she was amazed. We discussed my before and current stats including weights and measurements.
I made a friend today. She called me skinny and it felt foreign and bizarre but we touched each other's lives and found a common bond.

I agree with JohnnyCakes. The weight loss phase is extremely short and then you will transition into the Maintenance phase. I transitioned around 7 months post-op. You want to make the most out of the Weight Loss Phase.
One thing that you might do is to assess your Protein intake. Your daily protein requirement is met by a combination of the amount of protein you obtain from food combined with the amount of protein from protein supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Right after gastric bypass surgery, the volume of food you consume is minuscule (2 ounces) per meal. But as you get further along, the meal volume increases. Therefore you have a very important option available to you provided you concentrate on consuming high protein meals. You can begin to reduce your reliance on Protein Shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. This is important because protein shakes contain calories. If you can reduce your caloric intake, then you can end a stall.
After surgery I completely lost my hunger. This condition lasted for about a year and then returned. It was not as strong as pre-surgery but it was there.
The strategy is different in the Maintenance phase than the Weight Loss phase. I discussed this in the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

Sometimes when we make serious changes in our lives, it causes others in our circle to reflect on themselves, and sometimes when they don't like what they find, they start to feel challenged by your change. Maybe they start thinking about their eating habits, etc. and then they get defensive. You are on a journey of recovery, you might lose some friends who are threatened by your personal growth, but reach out to people here and also in support groups where you live and make new friends, people who have walked in your shoes and know what it's like to struggle. You are doing so well, look at all of the positives you've gotten this last month and focus on what a healthy lifestyle will be like, you will rock this! And I don't know about you, but I have been the "fat friend" and the fat family member for my whole life. People don't know how to relate to you when you break out of that mold, so just give them time and go and create the life you want. If they are truly friends they will be back, and if they don't then you are better off without them, IMO. You deserve people in your life who want you to be happy and healthy. They are out there, and you can find them. Keep up the good work!

Maybe you can have him go to your visits so he understands how deadly obesity can be, and how safe the surgery can be. Lack of understanding can cause a lot of fear. Plus, change is always difficult.

The surgery is safer than long term food addiction. Surgery with experienced doctors vs diabetes, heart disease, weakened/painful joint's and the many many other health risks that come with obesity. It's definitely worth it in the long run. Definitely make the decision on your own and ask for his support. Just because he doesn't want you to do it doesn't mean that's the right choice. Maybe you could find someone in your local area who has had the surgery and get them to sit down with you and him. Might help show him that it's not too scary and the benefits are awesome
