First your Dr. is an ass and doesnt know what he is talking about. Dont worry about him.
I kept a journal and I was a slow loser too. I also lost 19lbs the first 6 weeks after surgery. Slow losers cant compare themselves to others but you can make goal sticking to the plan. I also was 48 when I had my initial surgery.
Hang in there !! You can do this.

you're fine - and I ditto what Tracyringo said - your surgeon is an ass. I lost 16 lbs the first month and 12 lbs the second month, so we're kind of in the same ballpark - and I started out at well over 300 lbs. I'm also older - I had surgery at age 55. Age can definitely make a difference.
It sounds like you're doing all you can do. Just keep up with it. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I lost over 200 lbs. Took awhile, but I was very committed to my program and I did it. And if you continue to follow your program regardless of what that insensitive jerk says, you'll be successful, too.

As far as weight loss goes I constantly struggled to keep myself under 175 with the sleeve and I was only eating around 1000-1200 calories a day. I lost 131 lbs with sleeve and I stuck to the plan that first year. I revised because of GERD weighing in at 180 in 5/2020 I lost an additional 28 lbs and my weight is stable for once !!!! The best part about this bypass so far is my weight is stable and I dont struggle to stay at this weight which is 13lbs less then I got with VSG. Good luck to you.

I have my surgery booked in 4 weeks time - it still feels too far away to be real in all honesty. My head was all over the place - am I making the right decision, am taking the easier way out ( I know it’s not!), am I being selfish spending such a large amount of money on myself ect ect. We had a family gathering last weekend, one of the first ones since Covid and lots of photos were taken. I saw said photos today. I burst into tears. I know and photo gate only reinforced that WLS is the right decision for me. I’ve been a yo yo dieter for as long as I can remember, I’ve been every size you can think of - but always always end up fatter than I started. Self esteem is non existent. I need to stop letting my weight control me and the quality of my life and decisions. Bring on 4th Sept.

When did you know, WLS was the right course of action for you?

First I want to say thank you to so many of the veteran posters on here. I hope you gals and guys know how much your experiences and feedback have helped me and I suspect many others. There's just such a fantastic mix of people and experiences - It's great knowing you aren't alone in this journey.

The first few months after surgery were easy. The weight was simply falling off, there wasn't anything I couldn't eat or drink - And better yet, I couldn't overeat because of the restriction. I felt fantastic most of the time, had all sorts of NSV's and loved my new life. From August until January I lost almost 50lbs - I was so close to Wonderland I could taste it. THEN reality struck - Suddenly I was one of those "slow losers" - It took almost 2 months to lose 13lbs. UGH, I WAS going to be one of those slow losers. OK, fine, I'm 52 and it is what it is, right? From January until May, I "only" lost 33lbs. Again, every week/month I told myself that I would lose the weight, I was just in some sort of a stall and things would magically pick up. Well, they didn't, I would lose 2-3 lbs and then I would gain 2-3 lbs. Again, "it's normal" I told myself.

Fast forward to a week ago - I jumped on here for some motivation (reading stories, etc.) and I took a hard look at what I was doing. Basically, I was being lazy - I was eating whatever I wanted and justifying it by saying "I only eat small portions" - Well, yeah, that was true...BUT I was grazing, I was drinking too much alcohol, and I wasn't tracking. I honetly have no idea how many calories I was consuming (especially on weekends with family and friends). I played mind games with myself and said "As long as I'm not gaining, I'm doing things right." - Well, that was a giant load of (@*$.

This past Tuesday (after a weekend of Mimosa's, Crown Royal, and some really great BBQ), I woke up to a 5lb gain (BTW, yes I realize some of that was Water retention). WAKE UP CALL. 5lbs? Seriously - Time to go back to basics before that's a 10lb gain. For the first time in MONTHS, I tracked every thing I tracked everything that went into my mouth (water, food, etc) - I did 3 days of liquid - In two days, those 5lbs were off. Rather than what I've done in the past, I didn't stop there - I continued tracking, I continued being cognizant of what and when I was eating. I said "no" to many things that I thought I wanted. I lost 6.8lbs from Tuesday to Sunday. What? I'm NOT a slow loser - I'm a LAZY loser.

Folks, for many of us, it's EASY in the first few months, it's EASY to convince ourselves that we're doing OK, it's EASY to compare ourselves to others, it's EASY to ignore signs that you're falling into bad habits, and it's EASY to get lazy. In reality, it's HARD to stick to your plan when you're feeling fantastic and patting yourself on the back for losing so much weight. I'm choosing to be thankful that this happened now rather than 2-3 years into it. I'm glad that reality smacked me in the face and forced me to face the fact that i wasn't doing what I needed to do. Right now it was EASY to get back on track before I let it get out of control. For those of you experiencing the same - Buckle up buttercup, start tracking, weigh yourself often if you need to, and take a good look and when and why you're losing weight and when and why you aren't.

Again, a very special thank you to you old timers for always keeping things real and giving out such fantastic advice.

Yes, I had days like that. Very often actually. It’s why I stated eating to a routine - to ensure I got in some calories & nutrients. I didn’t mind if I didn’t eat all my portion but as long as I ate something nutritious. I felt this was really important when I was losing.
My hunger started to come back at about 18 months but I still have times I’m just not hungry. Now on these days I’ll drop my Snacks but still try to keep to my meals. I also tend to favour meals I pre made & froze on non hungry days. No fussing just reheat so I don’t lose what little enthusiasm I have for eating messing about prepping a meal.
    Good luck.

Tracyringo reacted to KSW22 in Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
I guess I will have to try something new now. I had my surgery Friday and they were unsuccessful doing the revision because of so much scar tissue from my perforated ulcer in 2012. He was able to repair my hiatal hernia but that’s all. Not sure how I’m feeling about it yet. I’m sure it will sink in sooner or later. Thanks for the reading references too.

I still have GERD and take a PPI twice daily with the RNY which sucks but my esophagitis when last checked went from a grade D to a grade A which is really good.
I also have no problems with keeping my weight stable. The VSG was great but I struggled in maintenance keeping it steady. My weight fluctuated a lot more and the lowest I got was 164.8 for a day, lol. I could usually maintain 175ish but was constantly stressed out. I would say I ate around 1000-1200 calories to stay in that range and under 1000 to stay in high 160s. RNY has been much easier to maintain my weight. I now weigh 154 and my weight fluctuates between 152-155. I have no problems or stress maintaining it !! This makes my daily life much easier because I dont constantly think about it anymore. I would even say I eat more now then what I did with VSG which sounds crazy but its true.
I have dumping syndrome which keeps me away from heavy carbs and sugar. I do eat these things in small amounts and usually dont have any problems but I have to be very careful of when and how I am eating those things.
I am less interested in food with RNY. Some days its a chore to eat ! I think this comes down to not being able to eat whatever I want when I want so if the food isnt great I really dont want to bother with it. My mind set has become totally different in regards on how I view and look at food.
I am 14 months out from my revision and 4 years from my VSG.
    Good luck to you !

Tracyringo reacted to catwoman7 in Goal weight - just a number?
I started feeling fine when I hit around 160, but I didn't consciously try to stop because I'd read a 10-20 lb rebound weight gain happens to most people during year 3. So I just continued with what I was doing and I eventually drifted down to 138, where my body naturally stopped. And yep - rebound happened. Up to 150 by the end of year 3 (which is perfect for me), and I thought I would end up stabilizing there - but no - I gained 10 more lbs around year 5. Trying desperately now to get back down to 150, since I felt like I looked and felt my best there.
so in short, if you're sure you want to stop there, then that's totally fine, of course - but just keep in mind that a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting your low weight happens to a lot (probably most) of us. I'm glad I let myself keep going because I eventually did end up where I wanted to be (although again, I'd like to be able to get rid of the last 10 lbs that I gained!!)

I think you’ll find many on here who consciously stopped trying to lose weight before their initial/original goal weight.
    I’m 5’2” and had set a goal of 120.
By the time 140-150 came around I was getting some “concerned” comments, but I personally wasn’t satisfied yet.
When I hit 127, i decided to stop as *I* felt I was looking too skeletor-ish.
Fast forward 2 years from that and I ended up losing a bit more anyway.
Today I am 115, but I think I actually look less skeletor-ish than i did at 127 immediately after weight loss phase (the fam agrees). I think it’s because weight may have shifted around a tad, and because carbs are a part of my regular diet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

People started telling me the same thing when I hit about 150. I’m 5’3.5”, so a little shorter than you. I’m also a sm in tops and size 6. I’ve now dropped to 140ish, glad to have hit “healthy” BMI (just barely!). I’m comfortable here and am working to maintain in a window of 140-145, which at the high end will technically be overweight but I’m ok with that.

BTW I lost 19 lbs since my skin removal surgery in January. According to the doc 11 lbs skin was removed so I’ve dropped a little more via diet and exercise since.

I'm almost one year out and down 89#, which is 28# short of my goal weight. That said, I already look "thin", to the point that family & friends - and now me - are questioning why I'm trying to lose the additional weight. I'm 5'6" & 158#. I'm wearing a size small/medium and a size 6 in pants. I'm also planning to have skin removal surgery in the next year or so. While I'm still going to stick to my post-op diet, I no longer feel the need to continue losing. Is this a common thing?
