  1. I’m coming up on my 1 yr surgery anniversary and I’m down 170 lbs (yay!). But recently I am being more and more hungry more frequently. I’m still losing a few pounds a month but I’m really concerned about my increase in hunger/eating/calories. I’m probably averaging 1400 calories a day. Is this normal?! I’m so stressed!!

They warned me that I may not lose any weight immediately after surgery and they were right.  I've stayed the same to the tenth of a pound.  I've got my protein in every day, done my exercise (actually more that recommended), and got most of my daily water in.  And I've eaten only those foods dictated.  So Frustrating!.  Any suggestions on how to break this plateau?

      I feel you first I lost a couple of pounds then gained back more! I'm folllowing every thing the doctor said including walking, protein and fluids. I finally hid the scale because the reality is the scale isn't telling the whole story. I've had to replace my entire wardrobe- the clothes I wore in June at the end of our school year didn't fit when's i tried them on last week - two weeks after surgery ( I also lost 40 pounds pre surgery). I put on a size Xl outfit today and in June as wearing 3x! So ignore the scale and check out your clothes, also do you have more energy etc? Good luck!

      I'm not sure how long post-op you are, but the first week you actually gain water weight from all the IV fluids. I lost that and more by the end of the second week. Then at 3.5 weeks I hit the famous 3 week stall...lol.. so yeah very normal for some people. If you get stressed by stalls weigh less often for sure. I weigh everyday and so I am used to the bouncing up and down and don't stress about it. As long as you know you are following your plan you will lose, stall, lose, rinse and repeat.

      I didn't know about this three week stall but I am there right now. I agree that hiding the scale is a good idea. It's hard because I want to know my progress but my clothes are all loose. I already had to do one huge overhaul of my closet and more than half had to be donated!

      I am looking forward to more exercise besides just walking. I heard that will help too!

Eating is getting easier.  I've only done 3 meals in a day twice with lots of uncomfort so now I'm doing small meals 5-6 times a day.  This seems to be working better.  Haven't gotten to 50g protein yet but my averages are getting higher.  Now I'm trying to find sample mini meals online.  If anyone has any good resources for that, please share.  Have a great day, sleevers!  :206_cat:

Noob question...how long does it take to get that hang of how much your stomach can hold?  I've vomited twice this week and I have no idea if that's normal, excessive, etc.  What say you, experienced sleevers?  Am I not separating the time between my liquids and food enough?  Please let me know your thoughts.

First day on full liquids and boy, am I overestimating what I can eat!  It took my almost 2 hours to eat a container of Chobani.  Then, after about 15 minutes I started feeling fuller and fuller and fuller!  I started feeling back to normal late this afternoon so I tried about a third of a cup of soup.  It took relatively no time to realize I'd overdone it again.  Rather than sit and feel bad, I got up and did some work in the garage.  That seems to have helped relieve the pressure a bit.  Any tips from you experienced sleepers for us noobies?  How do I guesstimate how much I can eat?

      Another tip is to not eat longer than 20min. I'm still not allowed to use more than 20min to eat, and I'm almost 5 months out. By prolonging the time you eat, it leads to eating more. maybe not now, but it will later.

      I portion everything out. My meals are not larger than 5 oz in volume. Salads I can eat more, but I measure my protein out first.

      Yogurt may be too thick for this early. Usually full liquids is milk-consistency. That second week I was sipping a tablespoon at a time all.day.long. Third week purees.. 2 spoonfuls of blended up split pea soup and I was FULL!

      On liquids I didn't worry about meal times etc. I had goals to meet and it took 12 hours of constant consumption to meet them.

      When you get to solids, the designated meal times makes sense.

      Erm.. by "solids" I mean purees, soft, mushy, etc. "Real food" rather than just liquids.

  6. Start of week 2 post op - 48 lbs gone, graduated to full liquid diet, and am free from those repulsive protein waters!  Happy camper!!  :1311_thumbsup_tone2:

  7. My desire to eat is so strong today!  And I'm just 6 days post op.  :47_tired_face:    I need help!  How do you guys handle the cravings?  Do they go away?

      I was sleeved 07/20 and I have been craving fruit like crazy! Yogurts have helped a bit.

      I did not really have any bad cravings. Savory things like delicious soup broth really tasted good to me.

Good morning, all!  So, it's day 4 post op.  Still having general discomfort/relatively low level pain on my right hand side (feels like I've been doing hundreds of crunches) and those nasty stomach cramps but they are getting less intense each day.  I took a pain pill last night but that's the first one so far.

    i can't tell if I'm hungry or not because of the cramps.  I did have a moment last night where I wanted the biggest, juiciest cheeseburger ever made but I'm thinking that was more a behavioral que from not having eaten in weeks (and seeing a Red Robin commercial!).  It passed relatively quickly.

    It is challenging getting in 64 oz of liquid in per day.  I got 17 oz in Wednesday and 30 oz in yesterday so I'm getting closer.  My experience so far has been that warm liquids cause less intense cramps than cold liquids.

    My only true complaint is the required protein water.  OMG, that is the foulest substance I've ever put in my mouth!  I've tried two different brands and they both make me gag, literally.  My surgeon's dietician suggested I try unflavored protein powder to mix in with Crystal Light.  Fingers crossed that is better.

    I get pretty tired mid afternoon but I'm assuming that's pretty normal.  Plus it's a good excuse for a nap!  (Naps rocks!)

    I need to start getting off my butt and start walking.  I've been putting that off but my "new normal" is going to require me to get out of the house and get moving.

      Ha! That's what the fast forward button is for. :) I haven't even had surgery, just trying to stick like glue to my pre-surg diet and the commercials are psycho killers!!!! :460_circus_tent:

  9. Just got home from the hospital!  Be prepared, sleevers, for some uncomfort the day of surgery.  Day 2 has been much better.  My only complaint is the stomach cramps.  They hurt but they're not long in duration.  Doc says it's normal.

      CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are starting one heck of a ride there Housten!!! All will be ok. Just follow your Surgeon and your Nutritionst guidelines. You will do great. Keep us in the know!! Good Luck

Day 6 of a 2 week clear liquid diet...this sucks so bad!!  :47_tired_face:   I'm so frustrated and angry and FRUSTRATED!!  I am so hungry and want to eat so bad!  I can have sugar free jello, popsicles and Crystal Light but the artificial sweeteners are just so bad!  I keep telling myself I'm almost half done but honestly it's not helping much.  This better be freaking worth it...👿

      Good luck to you.. this is typically the most challenging part of WLS as far as appetite. Take it one day at a time and remember this is so you have the best chance at having a smooth surgery as possible. Hang in there!

      I know your pain. It's hard. I'm four weeks tomorrow and I'm still on a mostly liquid diet because pureed food isn't for me.

Hi, all!  In April 2017 I learned I needed a hip replacement but could not find a surgeon to help me.  My BMI is too high making the risk of infection too significant for anyone to consider the procedure.  So, after being obese the vast majority of my life, here I am.  Time to face the demons.  :P 

    One of my biggest concerns is failure.  My father and his sister both had gastric bypass surgery and both are larger now than before their procedures.  

    I need to lose (and keep off) 85 lbs to qualify for hip surgery.  I've lost 24 of it so far, pre-op.  Ideally I'd like to eventually get below 200 lbs.

    Surgery is scheduled for 8/7.  Today is day 4 of a two week clear liquid diet (which is much harder than expected).

      I had a friend that had RNY and never got anywhere near goal and has regained about 1/3 of their loss. They had surgery before I did. I learned from all of their mistakes, and that helped me not make those mistakes and be successful. So think about what they did, what they did wrong and try not to follow in those foot steps.

      The things I saw my friend do was, not follow the post-op food steps. Eat the same just smaller (that won't last with time), and fad diet instead of finding a sustainable way of eating for life.
