  1. I'm 204 right now and my surgery date is 9/2. I hope to lose a little before then, but I don't want to lose too much as to disqualify myself from surgery. I'm 5'7" (sometimes 7.5 on a tall day). In the past several years, I've been as high as 245, and as low as 186. My goal weight is 140. I just know I can't do this on my own and sustain any progress. No doctor in the US would approve me, and so I'm going to Tijuana to get sleeved. I don't understand the mentality in the US that you don't "need" bariatric surgery until your BMI is over 35. It doesn't make sense to me.

Take before photos that you can reproduce at your lower weight in the same outfit and poses. Make a video to yourself including all your concerns, goals and expectations. Start a journal and add to it frequently. You can review these whenever you need a pick me up to see how you have come and where you Don't want to ever be again. Also take your measurements and do it every few weeks as you go. You will be surprised to see that while you Don't always loose pounds, you may still lose inches. My body shrank one size while my weight stayed the same over the past few months. Many changes will take place and it is truly a mind game. The very best to you with your journey.

Totally normal to be scared. If you weren't the least bit nervous, I would think you didn't really understand what you signed up for.

Once you wake up and get through the first couple days, you should feel much more confident. In the meantime, spend time on here continuing to learn about postop life, and get your house and affairs in order so you can have a relaxing trip without worrying about whether you paid that bill or will come back to find you forgot that half drunk glass of milk by the radiator... (ok, that's just me, but you get the gist).

Thanks for your response. That is very true what you said about not understanding if you weren't feeling nervous.

  4. I am in a very similar situation, BMI of 32 and I'm going to get sleeved on 9/2. I need this tool. I've never been successful on my own. I want to be healthy. I want to reset my relationship with food. I'm ready (but scared, as with all major surgeries). Maybe more so because I'm going to Tijuana to have it done.

My BMI is 39, but I do have a lot of muscle as well. I don't look like most other people that are over 300 pounds. People often think that I am in the 240-250 range. I have surgery scheduled with Dr. Illan on 8/7. I have never heard of this being an issue, but I am nervous about it as well. I think that if you were approved at a certain weight, the surgery should be performed even if you do lose weight. After all, that is the purpose of a pre-op diet. They want you to be as healthy as you can be, so there is a better surgical outcome with hopefully less complications. Good luck on your journeys.

I couldn't agree more. And build has a lot to do with it. Good luck to you too! I'll be looking for your updates.

  6. I am scheduling to get sleeved on 9/2. I'll be flying into San Diego that day, and out on the 6th. Anyone looking at scheduling out that far? I feel like I've talked to so many places and done so much research that I'm practically an expert ;)

Here's my question - I have a low BMI for this sort of procedure, and I'm concerned that with the pre-op diet, I could lose enough weight temporarily that on surgery day I wouldn't qualify. Has anyone been in a similar position? I don't want to gain just to lose, but I'm thinking it's a real possibility. Thoughts?
