EW11211 got a reaction from hope4momof4 in ESG with reflux
I have mild reflux, I was on meds for 2-3 weeks and then stopped. The ESG didn't have any impact. I am 4.5 month out and lost almost 16% of my body weight (30 lbs)!

Even with the VSG, weight loss is slower with low BMI
    https://www.bariatricpal.com/index.php?/topic/399645-Gastric-Sleeve---BMI-31
When I was debating what to do these are the points that helped me decide:
    * I have a family that I am responsible for, 10% risk vs 1% is too high for me
    * I am doing for health reasons I will be happy with a size 8-10. I don't want to be a size 4
    * I didn't want to be off from work for for 4-6 weeks
    * people loose a lot of weight with VSG, sometimes too much. I know of a person that did it for 40 lbs. He looks sick.
    * even if I have to do a revision to the ESG, that I understood it is possible if needed after a couple of years, I would do it again instead of doing the VSG.

EW11211 reacted to brightfaith in Everyone: What was your turning point in your life that made you decide the wls route?
I'd thought about surgery off and on for years, but I had always concluded it wasn't right for me--too much struggle and management for someone so depressed and too much restriction for someone with a difficult binge eating disorder. Over the last 18 to 24 months, my depression has been improving (finally after decades) and I've had much more drive to live a full life. At the same time, my mobility challenges due to weight and deconditioning and worsening diabetes complications have seriously limited how much I could actually lead a fuller life. I have great fear that they will cut my life very short. I've felt a great deal of dismay over that and little hope.
Then in June, I had an amazing opportunity to travel to Hawaii, and it gave me such joy, joy like I hadn't felt in some time. And at the same time sadness -- I wanted to do so much more. I ventured into the ocean at one point and there was a bit of a step down -- not much, and none of the others on the beach seemed to have any problem with it -- but I actually wasn't able to get myself back onto the beach, losing my balance, and kept being knocked over by the surf. A lovely woman came over to help me, for which I was so grateful. But sad...I want to be able to do something as simple as go into the ocean (and get back out).
And then I decided to re-look at surgery -- it seemed to me the most effective path for addressing my mobility challenges and diabetes is surgery. I've been down the "natural" weight loss road many times and have lost, 30, 50, 70, 90 pounds in the past just to regain and mire myself further in disordered eating. Surgery provides a much better chance for long-term maintenance of weight loss and just makes more sense -- I do not want to simply repeat the past. I cannot do that to myself again. So I got up my courage and decided to move forward.

EW11211 got a reaction from Melesg in Restriction??
I feel restriction only on heavy Proteins like chicken, tuna fish, but only if I go over 4-5 oz. In my case, I don't feel it immediately, it takes more than half an hour to feel it, therefore I have to be careful. Certain fruits like pineapple also weights on my stomach. I wouldn't describe it as painful, but more like pressure.

    Hi all
Yes smooth sailing as far as weigh loss, average of 6 lbs a month (besides the first week loss) , no exercise as of now. Only issues I have is with Constipation.
I weigh myself everyday, and I just realized how my weight fluctuates according to my cycle, to be exact twice a month.
I get full after small quantities of food, but eat often. Lost a total of 22 lbs in 2.5 months.

    Hi all,
This is one of the best decision I made in a while, Iam 48 years old, 5" 1" was 190 one week ago.
I came across Dr. Sharaiha's clip loved the idea.
I had an appointment on June 13, then a follow up with a nutritionist the next day. They had available July 7 so I booked it.
My Insurance doesn't cover this procedure, therefore I didn't have to go through the waiting period and psych consultation. The doctor and the hospital offer a payment plan, that was helpful. I wouldn't take a chance and do it in Mexico or somewhere else.
One week before the procedure I went back for all the blood work. The day before the procedure I had to be on the clear liquid diet, Nexxium and an anti-nausea patch.
My surgery was scheduled for 9 am, I was in the hospital at 8, back home at 2 Pm. No nausea no vomiting, the only issue was gas pain that got better by walking . I also had some pain in my throat from the tubes, gone by Sunday. Monday went back to work (desk job).
The post op diet is Clear liquid for 2 days, then full Liquid for the end of the 2 weeks than gradually adding soft solids, solids up to week 6 you have to follow the program.
I don't feel hungry and get full very fast. I lost as of this morning 11 lbs!! I sip Vitamin Water between the shakes and Soups in order not to get dehydrated. Took antibiotics for 3 days for prevention, Nexxium for 2 weeks and if needed Miralax for stool softener. Also take chewable and liquid vitamins. I do feel a little weak due to rapid weigh loss , so I take a nap when I come back from work.
Besides my son that had the lap band a while ago, I know a few other people that did gastric sleeve as well as the lap band. A friend had the Gastric sleeve he was very sick for weeks, missed a month of work. I believe this procedure may not be as efficient as the sleeve for people that are morbid-obese but for the low BMI'ers it is the best option with the least risks. It is also reversible if needed.
I did speak to a person that did it over 3 years ago, she lost 60 lbs but gained back 10. Still good numbers for me. She started at 220 , 5' 5". You can still eat chocolate and ice cream comfortably, so you always have to do the right choices, but right know I have no cravings and no hunger whatsoever!

Seldom, but it happened, no throwing up, I can't decide if laying it out or walking around, what helps faster. It happens after Protein solids like chicken, cottage cheese. Interestingly that with meat I didn't experienced it , maybe because it is higher in fat.
I have a family member that did the lap band 10 years ago. She is a success story I always use to joke with her that "middle class" always suffers. Finally there is a procedure for the "middle class".

I shared with most of my family and just 3 other good friends. My reason is , I was able to loose in the past 30-40 lbs but regained, and I see peoples reaction "She is taking the easy way out" . When you are in the verge of diabetes, Bp and/or cholesterol, you do what is possible to be healthy, and that is my goal. I rather avoid this extra negative comments.

liquid paid medication was prescribed, i took once the first night before I went to sleep, just in case but I didn't have pain. I had gas cramps once or twice during the night, just getting out of bed and stretching was enough. The first two weeks is it the time the stomach has to heal, I couldn't or was just afraid to drink too much. I wasn't hungry but I had to sip often. I did wake up in middle of the night with a stomach discomfort that that may have been hunger pain I just had a sip of Ready to drink Plant fusion and the discomfort was gone. Nausea medication, stool softener, Nexxium and antibiotics for 3 days was also prescribed. I left the nausea patch for 72 hours after surgery just in case.
Ask you doctor about the diet phases. Each doctor has different protocols, and even my nutritionist changed it around, depending how you feel. I did tell my 10 year I am on a diet. And when people ask me how I am loosing weight I tell them "I am doing the shakes" . If someone friendly/family really needs to loose weight I tell them what I did.

There is no proven method. I personally know people that were very successful with the lap band and others that regained. The same with the sleeve. A neighbor across the street lost 100+ lbs and regained 30. She herself told me. I can eat very small quantities of chocolate" Ultimately WLS is only a tool, I chose the tool that is right to me. For me the sleeve is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

    Hi,
I did the procedure on a Friday 9AM by afternoon I was home. My husband drove me back. That afternoon I took a nap. Saturday I went for a walk around the block. Monday I was back at work, I have a desk job. Some days I took a nap when I came home, I did feel a little tired maybe due to the low calorie consumption.
The day after the procedure I had a little pain in my neck muscles from the endoscopy, Gas pain for another 2 days that faded with walking.
The diet is similar to the sleeve but the stages are much shorter. One day liquid diet before the procedure. 2 days clear liquid after the procedure, then full liquids (shakes) for 2 weeks. Week 3 is pureed Protein, Week 4-5 add soft vegetables and some fruit and week 6 add some carbs (optional)
I do follow up with a nutritionist, by appointment or phone call.
This procedure is not as restrictive as the sleeve that is why the expectation is less weight loss than the sleeve. But it depends on your starting BMI . I believe age can be a factor too. I hardly exercise so maybe that is why they predicted this low percentage. The surgeon should give you a better prediction.
There is a 1% risk of complication in this procedure comparing to over 10% with the sleeve. There is no cutting so I don't think leakage comes into play.
I am over 6 week post procedure and I feel great. I lost 18lbs and I feel very energetic. I don't have issues with any food. Just chicken I have to eat slower. No nausea no vomiting no gerd, no stitches. I log my food and my weight on a daily basis, I am on around 1000 calories per day (the goal for me is 1150) . I try to take Vitamins on a daily basis. I am constipated, but I was before the procedure,(I take Iron pills) Besides feeling uncomfortable if I overeat, I don't feel anything.

The question is what is your BMI and what is your goal. If I would have to/want to loose 100 lbs I would choose the VSG. My ultimate goal is to loose up to 40-50 lbs total (BMI 25-28). My BMI was 35, although I have family history of diabetes cholesterol and heart diseases, I wouldn't get insurance coverage for any surgery, because I am healthy. My goal is to avoid all health issues before they come up. My cholesterol was borderline before the procedure. At my age, 50 years old, I don't want to look like a dried out raisin.

I had the ESG, taking in consideration my low BMI, and safety of the procedure, no loss of work. It is not even called a surgery. The weight loss is not as radical as the traditional sleeve. It is geared for patients who would like to lose 40-60 lbs. My surgeon estimated I will lose between 20 and 25 % of my body weight. I will be very happy with a size 8, and most importantly, keep the weight down. I lost 8% of my body weight the first month. I feel great no side effects, I can eat everything in small quantities and slowly, specially meat and Protein. As with any Bariatric surgery, you still have to control what you eat.

The stomach stays stitched, in fact after 6 weeks it is irreversible.

It is 6 weeks from my procedure. I can gulp Water without restriction, a good 12 oz +. This procedure risks, complication and recovery are not to compare to others. I did the procedure on Friday, Monday I was back at work, no nausea, vomiting. The challenges are the same, Portion Control and follow the diet program. The only drawback maybe a slower weight loss, that may be due to a lower starting BMI. By now I can eat everything in smaller portions. And that is my goal. I don't crave for sweets either (so far...)

Congratulation on your weight lost, you are an inspiration. This procedure is recommended for BMI between 35 and 40. My starting weight was 5 lbs above you goal weight.
I feel very good in general, I don't feel ill when I overeat, no vomiting and no nausea, just a very full feeling, uncomfortable feeling, like when you use to drink 2 cups of seltzer after a meal (before surgery). I weigh or portion my food before I eat in order to avoid it, I once ate cottage cheese from the container while browsing online and suddenly realize I ate half of eat. (8 oz). That is part of my problem. Eating without thinking.
