Mhy12784 got a reaction from abefroman329 in Are there other diabetics in here who have to take an A1c
Yes there's also worse things than delaying or canceling a surgery. Like getting hit by an Asteroid.
The fact is if you have a documented record of your a1c on paper and anything bad happens it's a clear cut case of negligent behavior by the surgical team, and opens the door to liability and lawsuits by the hospital and surgical team as well as them eating the cost of any complications. Why they would proceed without during their due diligence is beyond me.
And you've made it blatantly clear that you haven't cleaned up your diet at all so that your BMI still qualifies.
You can eat lots of calories without eating garbage allowing your blood sugar to go all over the place. Complex carbohydrates, nuts fats less lean meats coconut/dairy cream are all high in calories allowing you to maintain your weight without spiking your blood sugar up and down.
But it sounds like that's not the answer you want to hear.
Why your surgical team hasn't addressed it is beyond me. It's possible they don't give a ****, it's possible they're unorganized, it's possible they didn't look at it because your PCP did the lab work, or it's possible that it's something they won't address until the last minute.
You have two choices. Address the issue, or continue to try to convince people on the internet that it's not a big deal and roll the dice with whatever happens

I typically eat about 200-300calories a meal 4-5 meals a day and have consistently eaten that amount from 8 weeks out through currently (just about 5 months)
A typical meal for me is 2 whole eggs + a high Fiber (60 calorie) pita or something equivalent to that. Basically all my meals are 100-200 calories of a lean Protein and up to 100 calories of a fiber source.

The surgical group I work with routinely uses a disposable 36fr bougie. However on complicated cases they have been known to use an endoscope instead of a bougie as it provides direct visualization.
Is it common, no. But it's not unheard of.
Of course this is very often on revisions or patients who have had/have a lap band in at the time of their procedure

You're taking miralax ways too often, which can cause your body to become dependent on it (this is a real thing).
I had the same problem as everybody else, and I have seen substantial improvements with the following.
Colace 3x a day (this you CAN do often)
Metamucil 3x a day (I love the pink lemonade flavor of Metamucil weight control. It has some other stuff in it, but I just buy it because I love the pink lemonade flavor)
Fiberchoice tablets 2-4 times a day (they taste yummy, and contain inulin fiber which doesn't do much but add bulk)
And sometimes I'll eat some fiber gummys as well (they contain polydextrose, which is another cheap crappie fiber that serves little purpose but adding bulk).
I have no idea how often you should take laxatives but my surgeon strongly recommending avoiding taking them more than once in a blue moon as it will cause dependency and cause real problems.

And with fiber supplements you wanna build up your dosage slowly over time otherwise you'll get super bloated and gassy.
I probably get around 35g of Fiber a day on a 1200-1500 calorie a day diet and that barely cuts it. That's not counting the additional fiber I get from fiber tablets and sometimes gummies as those are inferior sources of fiber.
But I strongly encourage anyone with Constipation issues to get ahead of the fiber game, before your unpleasant issues turn to hemorrhoids and then you'll be dealing with an extremely unpleasant situation

Mhy12784 got a reaction from Orchids&Dragons in Recipes with coconut flour anyone? :)
    My favorite coconut flour recipes
"fried" chicken or fish. Works best in an air fryer but could be baked. Basically dip it in egg wash, throw some coconut flour on a plate and season it. Dip it throw in an oven or air fryer with VERY VERY little oil and you have a healthy fried chicken/fish.
Other easy recipe is a Protein mugcake.
1 scoop Protein Powder, 2 tablespoons coconut flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. Mix all in a coffee mug add some milk stir until a THICK batter. Add some vanilla extract or flavoring of choice. Microwave 30-40 seconds and done.
Personally I love coconut flour, tastes fantastic low calorie filling and high in Fiber

Try getting creative with Protein products you dont like. Drinking them is boring. sugar free pudding, protein fluff, mugcakes smoothies, , Cookies are all things ive done with protein powder. Some are easier/healthier than others, but theres so many creative ways to use the stuff that it can go from disgusting crap to edible and enjoyable
Personally I think you take any protein powder mix it with coconut flour baking powder splenda and skim milk toss in the microwave and itll taste pretty decent (if thanks to only the coconut flour)

Has anyone noticed a substantial change in hunger around this point? I feel like the past several weeks my empire has come roaring back. I've been sticking to my basics (high Protein high Fiber low calorie) but it's been a world of difference lately. I'm hoping it's a temporary phase or something

Protein mugcakes is my go to protein recipe (Google it there's tons of them)
My personal favorite is 1 scoop of Protein Powder (syntrax matrix) 1 tablespoon coconut flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder and a little skim milk to get it all mixed (until it's dissolved and a thick mix)

Microwave 30-60 seconds based on preference.

Now your protein is hot and cakey. Plus it's delicious, and it's not sweet at all

I know leaner meat will be less calories and have more Protein per ounce, does this make the leanest meat available the best option post op?
I recently found myself able to incorporate meat again (beef and fish, waiting another week or two for chicken)
Should I use medium fat meats for a few weeks as they're supposedly easier to eat and digest (ie 85/15) or just jump in with the leanest stuff

I think 64 oz thing is hogwash. Early on when you're in the liquid/puree phase I think 64 oz is a good number for most people to aim for. But once I started eating solid foods and a relatively normal diet again (around 2-3 months post op) my Fluid intake is close to half that possibly even slightly less.

And I pee non stop and it's always clear, so I'm not particularly concerned about my fluid intake. If I was drinking 64oz + of fluid a day I would probably be peeing in excess of 20 times a day which is in no way appropriate or healthy

Mhy12784 got a reaction from etc. etc. etc. in Genepro
Well their claim is a bit outlandish and clearly falls in the "too good to be true" category. I would imagine that no food has 100% full absorption / 100% bio-availability, so when they make outlandish claims the burden of responsibility to support those claims falls on them. Here is their "study" supporting their claims
    http://www.musclegen.net/documents/geneproClinicalTrial.pdf
(note its a small short term, small sample size, poorly controlled clinical train paid for by them).
Personally I think their claims are 100% bs and wildly exaggerated. That said I dont think the product is bad for you, it is very much a Protein supplement.
That said its very likely that youre really only getting somewhere in the 11-15g range of protein per serving and absolutely not 30g.
The TLDR: is basically GENEPRO is very likely giving you substantially less than 30g of ACTUAL protein per serving, which makes it overpriced and difficult to accurately track your macros. But if you dont mind overpaying for an easy to dissolve flavorless protein its probably just as fine as any other Protein Powder as a protein source. Youll just have to make an educated guess on how much protein youre consuming, and probably double their dosages to get that actual amount

GENEPRO is just expensive and a bit shady.
I'm not quite sure how they can claim their Protein Shake contains 30g of Protein yet is only 56 calories, when one gram of protein is 4 calories. Clearly they're either lying or misleading their customers
I don't think anybody is going to have the perfect answer for you, but I know there's definitely going to be better value stuff out there that doesn't have question marks surrounding it

Mhy12784 got a reaction from jess9395 in Struggling with whey....
Just my experience but I took whey Protein from something I never enjoyed (at best tolerated it, at worst thought it was gross as hell) and turned it into something I LOVE eating.
The two ways I eat my whey (yes I eat it don't drink it)
Is the protein mugcake recipe (which is basically whey, baking powder, skim milk and I add a little coconut flour) and you microwave it. Or protein fluff is basically protein powder (usually a mix of whey and casien) xanthum gum and skim milk and you use electric beaters to turn it into a whipped cream/Ice cream
You could Google booth and tinker with the recipes, but it's absolutely delicious. I don't consume whey because I need to (you don't) I consume it because it's a healthy delicious snack that I love eating and look forward to.
So if you're not enjoying the taste, get creative with the recipes. There's so many protein recipes that taste great, and I know I'm extremely happy with the two that I use

Once you are cleared to have foods that are blended or whipped (usually pretty soon after surgery) I recommend trying this

I eat this almost every single day. Taste like ice cream/whipped cream and its ingredients are almost completely Protein Powder + fat free milk. With something like this in my diet (which seriously is delicious) I have no interest in eating any junk food/garbage. And its definitely healthy enough to be an everyday food while satisfying that sweet tooth urge.

I've only frozen it a few times, but not since I vastly improved the recipe (was a lot of experimenting with the early batches).
You can certainly freeze it but I think it's much better fresh. The texture becomes somewhere between icy and freezer burnish. It's not bad, but fresh it's absolutely delicious, and legit taste like a real dessert (when I made it adding PB2 I thought wow this is totally something I'd order in a restaurant) Of course I haven't messed around with freezing it in a long time so I'm sure it could be improved, and I never used something to properly store it in a freezer either (ie Tupperware) so that could've helped
That said tossing it in the freezer for a short while is perfectly fine and just chills it while making the texture more solid.
It's been a staple in my diet the last few 6 weeks or so. Completely takes care of any sweettooth desires (not that I actually get many) while filling the hell up out of me.
The most impressive part is how filling it is though and the volume.

Also I think sugar free popsicles/jello are an extremely common reccomendation from surgeons and nutritionist for patients especially in early stages.

As a matter of fact sugar free Jello and Italian ices were part of the meal plan when I was in the hospital postoperatively

Mhy12784 got a reaction from dsapeg69 in Extra incisions instead of 5 I have 9
More incisions is often because of adhesions (scar tissue) from trauma or previous surgery, and it allows them to get around those areas by going in different areas instead.
However in your case a hellers myotmy during a bypass is rare (I've never seen one done at the same time as a bypass surgery only seperately) so it's entirely possible that some trocar sites were because it's in a different area than the bypass and you couldn't use all of the same Trocar sites.

Likely it's a combination of the two

Mhy12784 got a reaction from GirlShrinking in Hiatal hernia and sleeve surgery
The hiatal hernia has no impact on insurance approval. As another poster said it "could" lower the cost if youre a self pay and your doctor helps you out.
It has almost no impact on the surgery being done. Typically adds about 10 minutes to the length of the surgery, unless you have an extremely bad/large hiatal hernia which is rare/unlikely (and if you did youd suffer from severe heart burn)
Weight loss will not make a hiatal hernia go down. It will reduce the chances of you getting one, but it will not make one go away.
The organization I work for I would say probably 30-40% of sleeve gastrectomy patients have hiatal hernia repairs during their sleeve, its extremely common. I had a hiatal hernia repair during mine, its no big deal.
I have absolutely no idea why your surgeon doesnt do sleeve gastrectomy on patients with a hiatal hernia, it makes zero sense to me. Its extremely common. Not wanting to do a sleeve on a patient with reflux/bad reflux I could understand (and instead recommending a gastric bypass for them) is perfectly normal and acceptable. But saying I dont do bariatric surgery on patients with hiatal hernias makes zero sense to me. It would be like a thoracic surgeon saying they wont do lung surgery on patients that ever smoked (which is the majority of them)
