I had my surgery March 2019. When I got home from the hospital I could barely choke down 2 oz of Water or Protein and my doctors office would yell at me during check in calls because I wasn’t being “compliant.” I cried so many times in that first week and wondered why I purposefully did this to myself. By the next week, I was a new person. Most of the pain subsided and even though it was still an effort to get the water and protein down, I was doing it and feeling much, much better. Each day/week got better. Sometimes there were setbacks but mostly good days. Learning to eat again was a challenge then and is still a challenge now. One year post op I was down 115 lbs and beyond my goal weight. My whole life has changed. My health and numbers are really good and I would go through all that again without a doubt. You took such an amazing step having the surgery and you will get through this and you will be glad you did. Hang in there and keep us posted on your progress.

I hear that....I was friggin miserable after the surgery. Even while the doctor is telling me what a good patient I am for getting up walking a lot and I'm thinking, "really? This is doing well? What did I do to myself!"
But it gets better really quickly! The gas pain will mostly go away in a few days to a week. Then you'll probably be really miserable about how little you can eat/pain when eating and drinking for a while. But that will pass too, as you move out of the liquid stage and your insides heal.
It took about 3-4 weeks after surgery before I started feeling like this was actually a great decision. Hang in there!

Just walk as much as you can that will help release the gas. I had a friend whom had surgery last year shes helped me so much and when she txt me just walk it will help I didn't even finish reading it and that same night I got up and started doing laps around nurses station. As for the hydration most hospitals have sugar free popsicles that helped a lot as well. Stay strong, each day it gets better! Just walk, sugar free pops and tiny sips. Think of the end results and all the things you will be able to do that you couldn't before. BTW congrats on surgery! 😁 the way u feel now is temporary....

Oh boy, the first two weeks are hard, but it does get better, I promise! I had issues with getting Fluid in as well, and that was the main reason I was in the hospital for 3 days. The gas pain took almost a week to go down for me... not fun! But, I gotta say the incision spot where they removed the vast majority of my stomach from... that hurt like a b***h! I would cry just getting up and down. When I was up, I didn't want to sit because it'd hurt, and when I was down I didn't want to get up because it'd hurt... but, the time will pass faster than you think. It's like you blink and you'll be passed all that! You just have to stick it out the best you can until then. Heck, I'm three months out and it doesn't feel at all like that much time has passed already.
I wish you the best in a speedy recovery!

I had my surgery in February, so I'm not that far behind. I'm not gonna lie. The first week is awful. I remember texting my family telling them I had "buyer's remorse," and that I thought I made a really bad decision. I seriously thought I'd made a big mistake. Much of it was getting the anesthesia and pain meds out of my body, which took about 4 -5 days. But it gets A LOT better, I promise. After about a week or two, I felt pretty good, still sore, but not so miserable. And now, about 8 weeks out, I feel great. I lost a good amount of weight, am back to eating normal texture food, and exercising without restriction. 8 weeks may seem like a long time, but it goes by before you know it. I feel 100% myself, now--but that first week or so...UGH!
Have patience, follow your doctor's advice and don't worry. You're body just underwent some major internal revisions and it will take some time to get used to it. Most people I know were in the hospital for two nights following surgery, so if you got out after one, your doctor must be happy with how your are doing, even if you don't feel so great. In the meantime, take small, frequent sips of Gatorade or Pedialite, or try a sugar-free ice pops (they were my salvation!). Watch some Netflex, read a good book, and allow yourself to heal. You will get there

During the first few weeks I kept reminding myself that I am healing - you literally have stitches holding your stomach together. That visual helped me be 100% on plan for the first 6+ weeks since it isn't just about trying to lose weight - it's about allowing your body to heal from something that's physically pretty traumatic. Good news is the body is an amazing thing!

I never did the puree stage, just went from liquids to easy to digest foods, I guess soft foods. Be careful with the Beans and gas (carbs). Otherwise, enjoy food once again!

well, it depends on the chicken part and how it's cooked. If you are going to eat chicken, make it the dark meat and not fried... i would stick to something moister. But i would lean towards some grilled white fish.
Remember to use your special saucer to eat on (like the size you put a coffee cup on). Portion out you amount. I use the 1/8 cup. Cut everything and i mean everything into tiny bites. I used my pinky fingernail as a gauge. Never never never put anything to drink on your table or near you. Take a bite, put down the fork/spoon, let go of fork/spoon, place hands under your butt or thighs, chew for at least 30 seconds (count), swallow, count another 20 seconds, if all goes well, take another bite and repeat. The 20 seconds will give you time to make sure it goes down and isn't one bite too much. You will be amazed that 2-4 bites and you will be done.
Even though you feel soooooo hungry, you will not be able to eat much.
Best of luck and Merry Christmas

I agree with above chicken NO GO - Seems lot of us had problems with chicken. I would say Hamburger, Shrimp, fish to start. Soft Protiens. Even though you are going to test your tool trust us all Take you time DO not overeat or you will pay for it. Once you get the hang of it will never be a problem but you are new to this and the learning curve has not started.

I think the chicken might not go down very well. Refried Beans would work, and you will be surprised at how little you swallow before you feel full!
Chew everything really well, eat slowly and STOP the second you feel restriction. It's that "one more bite" that causes pain, nausea, etc, especially in the very beginning.
    Good luck!!!

sporters reacted to BigSue in When do you usually get a surgery date?
If you haven't talked to your surgeon's office in a while, it might be a good idea to give them a call to let them know you're almost done with your 6-month weight loss and ask what you need to do to schedule the endo and psych eval. A lot of bariatric practices have a "patient navigator" who helps to coordinate that stuff.
I had some concerns about my insurance coverage (mainly because I hadn't been to a doctor in almost 10 years, so I didn't have a documented weight history), but the surgeon was very familiar with my insurance requirements and said, "Don't worry, we'll get you covered," and they did! They do this for a living, so most of them are pretty good at dealing with insurance companies.

I haven't seen a nutritionist. I had surgery in Mexico. I was given guidelines while I was there. I will try to find a good one though. Thanks

I completed all but one of my insurance carrier requirements and all of my surgeon requirements on the 12th. The only thing I have left is to get my psych evaluation results on the 19th. I'm told that it takes up to two weeks to get carrier approval, and once I get the OK it's another two weeks to get my surgery scheduled. Looking at August from the sounds of it [emoji3]

I was honestly surprised at how easy it is NOW. I'll be 6 weeks post-op on Tuesday. I have had no issues or aversions to any foods or beverages. The only thing that is difficult for me and can make me uncomfortable every so often is eating too fast! I try to remind myself every day. But honestly I've never once been nauseous, never once vomited. Make sure you take your Miralax though... That almost became an issue for me.
In the first week, I struggled for a couple of days with getting my Protein and fluids in. However it now feels like that was nothing! I hope your journey is as smooth as mine has been thus far! I also feel like I read everything I possibly could, and expected all of these things to happen. Everyone is different. I'm feeling great, and grateful!! Good luck!

I was shocked by the drain, I was never told I would have one and all my pain came from the drain while in the hospital.
I was shocked that I could not start any liquid until after my leak test which was almost 24 hours later, my mouth has never been so dry.
I didn't expect to regret it so much at first. The first month was hard and I constantly questioned and second guessed myself.
I had a ton of muscle pain from the large incision that popped up weeks after surgery. It was hard to sleep for over a month.
But most importantly I never expected, at 6 months out, to feel so normal or to have lost so much weight. I'm 97 pounds down and 67 from surgery and it's the best feeling ever.
