  1. Forget about burning calories - that is not how this works. Get your attention on goals that increase strength, flexibility and endurance. Weightloss will be mostly nutritionally driven, not exercise driven. And you can support your nutrition by getting stronger and fitter.

  3. Ah ha!!! As I am getting closer to goal short stalls are more common. I am not doing IM. Two people in my office are though - One gained and another lost. Goes to show you we all have to sort out what works for us.
  4. You may want to research fasting. I am a new to this but the science makes sense. I just read a book by Dr Jason Fung called the complete guide to fasting. I am currently doing a 1x week 24 hour fast and loving it and plan to amp up.
  5. Mine started to fall out at around the 3rd month. In the 4th-5th month I shed like a german shepherd and cut my hair short. In the 8th month it started growing back. I am in my 11th month and back to thick locks (and the pixie doesn't really work anymore). I had a lot of hair to begin with, so even though I lost tons, it was mostly a housekeeping problem (daily cleaning of an all-white bathroom).

    Not losing weight when working out!

    This is just not true. I appreciate this is one of those superstitions floating around. But I am one of those people who has gained significant muscle mass and correlated strength while maintaining a significant calorie deficit. I have lost 137 pounds since May 16th 2017. I have not done DEXA scans like others, but the stats on my deadlifts, bench presses, military presses, cleans, bicep curls, rows etc speak to the added muscle mass (I am not including any improvements in Bodyweight movements given obviously as I weigh less it’s easier to do a push up.)

    Need to step it up

    Not sure what you mean by “not loosing.” How long has it been since you stopped loosing weight? Wright loss is 90 pct a function of diet and is far less impacted by exercise so if you aren’t tracking your food intake I would recommend you start doing that. And if you aren’t following your surgeons plan you should get that back on track. If you are doing these things and legitimately not loosing weight then there are different options. As far as exercise - we’ll as someone who took a brief 20 year hiatus from exercise and got back into it (including overcoming all the typical gym anxiety of someone who is unfamiliar with gyms, exercise options and approaches, much less what to do when I am in a gym) I would strongly recommend just going and doing a lot of different things. Take classes, try different gyms from affordable chains to small boutiques until you find something you like. The best workout is the one you will do.

    7 weeks post op, not losing

    I have had very few stalls (you can see my stats in my signature) but one is the few was in week 5. This is physics and if you have a significant calorie deficit you will lose but it is not useful to think of this as a daily loss. I do weigh myself daily and track daily but it’s been useful to identify trends. I now do a calorie and carb spike about every 5-6 days. I have now added one day of liquid fasting. The point is to tweak your diet and nutrition to maximize weigh loss in he Honeymoon phase.

    Strange "out of it" feeling

    I would not describe my experience like yours but you are most likely dealing with a fairly intense calorie deficit. It took me about three months to me emotionally and physically adapt to this. Additionally there are significant hormonal changes you are likely experiencing. What you are describing may be connected to that. I would not worry about and do what you can to support yourself including getting a lot of rest, handling your hydration and eliminating stress where you can.

    Has anyone tried this pasta?

    I eat the edamame pasta as well. You can get it on amazon. You need to work with it differently than regular pasta. It’s as dense as hell and cooks very quickly and my sleeve can’t handle a lot of it. But it’s a nice change up from animal proteins.
  14. Hey there sleevers! I saw a thread started for may 2018 sleevers and it was shocking to think I was planning this step a year ago. I am down 132 lbs, I have managed to lose 18 since the Xmas. This is something I am very much at work on and am back to my 2 lb/week average since getting back on track after the holidays. I plan to lose another 40 lbs and reevaluate. I am at 203 right now and can’t believe I am a few weeks away from being under 200 which has not been the case since high school. There are things I would have done differently but one of the things I am glad I did was get on an exercise regimen. The changes to my body are shocking - not just being smaller but being stronger, with better posture, muscle tone, stamina. My average resting heart rate is under 60. I sleep an average of 6 hours a night instead of 8 and am well rested. The hair I shredded like a German Shepherd in the summer has come back and I can’t wait for winter to be over and Summer to come. We should all be proud of our accomplishments. This journey has not been easy but it has been worth it XOXO to everyone.
  15. @Creekimp13 Thank you for sharing this so powerfully. Like others, I can relate to what you have said. And while there are moments when I miss the experience of sitting down at a diner and ordering a bacon cheeseburger with waffle fries and how felt when I ate some really rich and savory and fatty dish (at least for the 20 minutes I was eating and savoring it), I have found some other ways to channel my feelings about food. I don't have hard rules - bread is a major trigger for me and I don't buy it, but I do eat it from time to time. If there is a rule, it has to be really good bread, like the kind of home made French bread I might get if I was at Balthazar in New York. Fried foods are also a trigger but again - same principle, if there is quality I will have some. I have no intention of ever completely eliminating the aspect of food that is beyond fuel - that is sensual, pleasure based and emotionally connected. What I am no longer willing to have is a life that revolves around that. So it will always have its place, I will always love to cook, entertain, enjoy pristine produce, learning cuisines and techniques and yes - even eating certain foods from time to time. I had my surgery in May - so I'm not yet a year in. Today I crossed the 130 lb lost mark and so far its working but a lot of why it's working is because my sense of restriction is still very intense (just had two bites of tuna poke and feel like I used to feel after I ate a 12 oz ribeye!) I may have to change my tune at some point in the future, but for now - this is where I am at.
  16. Back pain in the upper right quadrant is associated with gallbladder disease. If you still have your gallbladder you may want to get it checked out.
  17. I am 8 months out and have lost 126 lbs including 10 day pre surgery liquid diet In the first 3 months I probably averaged about 600 Calories day. Around 6 months it was about 800-900. Now I am closer to 1000. I work out, work long hours and have no issues with my stamina (although that was not the case in the first 4 nonths). I do try to Vary my calorie intake every few weeks by doing short term spikes and then lower calorie days. My weight loss progress is pretty consistent with a CICO approach. This is something I’ve tweaked over the past several months which I think is critical. Different people respond to different things.
  18. Had a great holiday and finishing the year with houseguests, NYE party, then hosting a big new years day party. I have gained and lost the same 2 lbs for the past 3 weeks - welcome to my first real stall and I am not being rigorous with the quality of food entering my body. However, I am working out and loosing inches. I am looking forward to getting back to my normal routine after the 1st and doing what I need to do see that scale cross 200. The frigid weather has required new wardrobe purchases for work - I have bought my size 12-14 winter wardrobe!

    I got a small Cuisinart. My relationship to coffee - I have none. I have never had a sip of coffee in my life. I drink tea occasionally but among my many vices caffeine has never been one. According to your stats on your post - today is your surgery day! Kick Ass!

    Hi there! Always good to have NYC in the house! And enjoy that Vitamix! I am in Washington Heights now, recent transplant from Bushwick. Best two decisions I've made in the past year was moving out of Bushwick for Washington Heights (there's green up there! lots of it!) and having a gastric sleeve. I know the former is probably heresy to BK devotees. I did my surgery memorial day - my stats are in my signature, but it's gone pretty smoothly for me. My surgery was self-pay due to insurance and I did that in Mexico - which was also simple and straightforward and managed the preop work and post op work my PCP who is affiliated with NYU. Being on this board is a good structure, I've learned a lot here that has been very helpful about various topics. Since surgery I've lost 115 lbs, and about to cross from obese to overweight according to BMI charts and have fallen in love with exercise/working out (actually, it's better to say I have fallen in love with the benefits of that). You will have a blast prepping and cooking with your background - I should be asking you for tips!

    I have a small cuisinart food processor, a Blendtec blender and a cold press juicer. I use my juicer and food processor the most right now and it’s seasonal. I am making a lot of savory dishes that get portioned out and frozen, in particular meat and bean dishes. Doing the work that needs to be done with garlic, onions, peppers, herbs, shallots, etc just works best in a small food processor. I prefer juices over veg smoothies but truthfully the fiber would do me good and I may lay off on the veg juicing. You can just get a lot more bang for your buck nutrient wise with juicing so it’s a trade off for the post op patient and my juicing is 90 pct veg and herbs with a boat load of ginger. I don’t do as much juicing in the winter. Not sure why, probably just all the growing up years of savory and saucy things when it’s cold. The one kitchen accessory that has been shockingly valuable is a high quality knife sharpener. I cook and prep food so much more often now. I am a single New Yorker and this demographic lives on take out and dining out. But that just doesn’t work for me. I am now heavily invested in food prep and cooking and I love it. I don’t use my slow cooker as much as I thought I would. It’s a hand me down from a friends upgrade to the instapot. I haven’t quite nailed how to use this without the incredible dulling of flavor that comes with the slow cooker but truthfully I haven’t done as much experimentation as I could have. I did do a Boston but in the slow cooker recently for a dinnner party to make pulled pork tacos that turned out really well.

    Home exercise

    I use a yoga ap at home and like Down Dog. If you do r subscription you can customize the routine. I also do a lot of my core work at home and do sit ups, planks, back extensions, Russian twists, push ups, etc. I do go to the gym and do HITT classes as well as weights. I live in NYC which means I don’t have a lot of room for equipment so mat work is best for my living situation.
  24. I am a fast loser. You can see the monthly stats in my signature. That said, I am 5’8” and started with a high BMI. The first week I was loosing 2-4 lbs a day and lost 19 lbs on my 10 day preop diet. Everyone is different. If you are a fast looser I would count your blessings.

    How much exercise?

    I would recommend you start doing as much as possible to get a flavor of the various approaches, modalities and benefits. You can do this by taking group classes, working out on your own on a gym or participating in group sports. As a 50 year old woman who took a brief 20 year hiatus from exercise, there are certain things that I have found out very quickly that I respond well to and certain things that I really need to work on. So while I have been working out only for 4 months, what I am initially focusing on is beginning to take shape. Weight training right now is giving me the biggest bang for my buck, but am also doing additional work to focus on cardiovascular and pulmonary health as well as balance (which was really horrendous). HITT, Strength training and yoga pretty much comprise my regimen now and as I learn and experience more this will evolve. 7.5 months out and 116 lbs down, I feel very strongly (for myself) that the exercise has been just as impactful as the weightloss in my experience of health, vitality, power, stamina and just general aliveness.
