Malina got a reaction from AndiR in Post-op type 1s?
I'm a type 1 (26 years) also currently waiting on a kidney and pancreas transplant wait list. I'm currently taking all of the classes etc to have the sleeve and I'm really scared about low blood sugars. I know I will have them and I currently have them at least once a day but I'm more scared about not being able to recover from one before I pass out. I have a history of passing out from lows. Are there any type 1's that would like to stay in touch and tell me more details about their lows, how they recovered etc? You don't have to worry about scaring me either. Thank you!!

My doctor told me I would be on a 3 day liquid diet. Most post I see are from people who are doing a 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I'm curious as to why the difference also...

I had gastric bypass Jan 18. My highest weight was 235. My day of surgery I weighed 192. My current weight today is 136. Boy has it been a journey of ups and downs but well worth it. I will however be getting plastics in the near future. I went from a 38 DDD to a b cup full of skin YUCK!

I had my life changing surgery on August 4th, 2017.
The day of my pre-op liquid diet, I lost 11 pounds. Went from 352 to 341. On the day of surgery, my weight was 341, as my pre-op diet wasn't two weeks.
Today marks exactly two weeks since my start of the surgery and I'm down to 320. That is a 32 pound drop in less then a month, with 21 pounds being lost in two weeks. Hopefully it continue.
I yet to feel hungry and it seems hard to even drink my three Protein Shakes daily.
We'll get there. Picture of myself as of 8/17/17

I have had a barium swallow. They found I have a hiatus hernia which is basically making everything 10x worse. The hiatus hernia is causing terrible acid reflux which in turn is irritating the muscles in my oesophagus causing them to contract not allowing the food through or causing me to vomit. I've been referred to a GI specialist in the U.K. and put back on a liquid diet. Hopefully they will operate to fix the hernia and my symptoms will improve. Still can't eat very much at this current time. But I knew something was wrong.

I can't believe I made it into the 100's , Goodbye 200's. Started the process in June 2016, was 290 lbs, diabetic, sleep apnea, GERD, high blood pressure, back and knee problems. Surgery 4/4/17 weighed 250 lbs, I had been going to the nutritionist and learning to eat right, gave up regular coffee and switched to decaffeinated, still drink decaffeinated, I finally get to shop in the regular section, no more plus size, I am so happy, feel so much better, no longer on meds for diabetes, GERD, no sleep apnea, and blood pressure meds cut in half then again hoping to stop at 6 month checkup. I had multiple stresses through the program, my apartment but my down and I lost everything, I got custody of my 15year old daughter. Became an American citizen, my brother passed away, Today I weigh 193 lbs. My goal is 175

I see a lot here who post their X-post op stories so I figured I would go ahead and share mine, I had my RNY on July 26th 2016, at my heaviest weight I toppled the scales at 460, at the day of surgery I was 418 in just 1 short year I'm now around 275 I'm usually not good at writing or sharing stories about myself, since being a big person self esteem issues has, and still is something I have regardless of how much weight I've lost. It's funny after the pounds fall off it was up until a few months ago I would look into the mirror and see no changes regardless of what others told me they saw for take a ways I would say follow what the DR tells you, there will be days that's hard and days you want to give up stick to the plan ! follow advice from forums like these, I rarely posted much here however look at my join date I've done allot of reading and searching others stories here so I would know what to expect before, during and after surgery I hope one day I can offer advice that will help someone along their journey also!.

Hey there! I'm new to this forum. I have been a member at another board, but their anti-carb philosophy made me angry and eventually the black sheep. Anyway, I had the sleeve done in February and since then I've lost nearly 75 lbs. I lost 100 pounds before surgery which I'm glad I was able to do. I'm about 45 pounds away from my goal now.
I'm 31 years old, live in Minnesota with my cats and dog. I'm an avid reader and writer which is good since I work in a library. My job requires that I move a lot during the day, so not only has that helped with my loss, my loss has made my job easier.
Since surgery, I've been able to take up running again, I've been on an airplane for the first time in 18 years and I was able to ride a bike without the tires flattening because of my weight. I have had no regrets and I'm so grateful to have my life back.

If you were my family member, I would tell you to eat the same way you would post op. See if you can drop those extra pounds on your own.. and if you make it a permanent dietary change, then you likely won't gain it back. There is no harm in trying it this way.
Surgery really is designed for people that have closer to 100lbs to lose. The complication rate for the surgery is low, but complications can be severe.. so a basically healthy person with only 50lbs to lose.. it just may not be worth it...
Just because you aren't exercising with a unit anymore doesn't mean you can't join a gym on your own (you'll need to post op anyway...)
The thing with surgery is, yes, it knocks off the excess pounds in short order.. but you'll still have to watch what you eat and exercise forever afterwards. So why not just do that now?
    Sample menu:
Breakfast: 4oz. cottage cheese and a piece of fruit
Lunch: 2 eggs and 6oz black Beans with salsa (can change type of beans as you prefer)
Dinner: 4oz of meat or fish, unlimited non-starchy veggies
Snack: 2oz salted nuts or seeds
Drink at least 64oz of non/low-caloric fluids.
Low sodium v8 and/or coconut Water will give additional potassium.
Take a Multivitamin, because this diet is lacking sufficient B-vitamins and Calcium.< /b>
My husband (who has not had surgery) started eating this way, and has already lost 23lbs on it, without exercise. It's simple and effective.

I was sleeved on July 25th. I have been tolerating this surgery fairly well. A couple days of bad gas pains and at first it was tough to drink my fluids but now I can do 4 to 6 ounces or more in an hour. I was really worried about getting dehydrated. I am assuming the pressure that I feel in my chest it's from drinking so much. With a little heartburn. Everything is healing up just fine. Glad to read of everybody else's stories from July as to what to expect in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

My month will be officially Aug 3rd, I had my surgery on a July 3rd on a Monday. For me the sleeve was the best decision I made. I know a lot has changed for me in the last month. Before the surgery I was diabetic not now... and enlarged heart... my Dr. said it's back down to a normal size. Started having signs that the diabetes was messing with my kidneys but not now. Everyday I wake up feeling good but not like before I felt bad all the time and basically ignored or pushed through it cuz l wasn't going to let life rule me!

Congratulations - you look fabulous!!! I'm in your same boat - very close to goal - now what!?!?! I realized, just keep doing what I'm doing. I still can't and won't ever be able to eat like I did before. Margaritas, queso, enchiladas, burgers, fries, Pasta . . . In reality, I don't even want any of that anymore. I feel exercise is the key to maintaining the loss. I know I don't really want to eat anything after working out hard and my brain tells me - girl, you just worked your ass off, don't go messing it up with crap food!

Oh, and I forgot to mention.. if you are currently working so hard as to be exhausted (mentally or physically).. try to reevaluate your routine. Since this is forever, it needs to be sustainable.

Let's say you wake up tomorrow, and the scale says your goal weight.
What do you do? What is your plan?
I'll give you a hint. If you want to continue looking the way you do, you'll have to continue doing what you did to get there.
You keep on doing what you are doing, without end.
If your weight starts dropping lower than you want, carefully ease up on exercise and/or eat a few more calories.
    That's it!

You look fabulous! I am inspired by your loss of inches/kg in such a short time. What you are doing is obviously working but you may have hit a plateau and will have to battle through. I get the fear of self sabotage and feel the fear of potential failure at only five weeks out. We are our own worst enemy.

I also have CKD. I bounce between stage 3 and 4. I'm currently on a combined kidney and pancreas transplant list. I just had gastric sleeve surgery on the 25th. I haven't read this book yet but am ordering it now. My dietician at my doctor's office offers a low protein meal plan for people that have kidney disease. If you would like some information on it I would be happy to pass it along.

Thanks for starting this thread. I will first state I have one kidney, post cancer, and it has CKD (limited function) and I CAN'T eat high or even moderate meat/protein now.
I have followed a modified vegetarian & low carb diet combined to both protect my wonky kidney, and help me lose. (on my own) Every pound lost is less burden on the system for BP and diabetes, and kidney health. I take essential amino acids which supports me getting the building blocks needed, without the load of meat Protein.
I lost 30 lbs on my own, but bounce up and down if I am not rigorous with fewer calories. The one issue I see with any bariatric is i NOW get a VOLUME of food- eating plant based I get 6-8 cups veggies a day, healthy fats, no processed foods/sugar/sodas.grains/carby food.
I don't trust many of the 'heath sites" online, most never even spell check, let alone fact check! ---livestrong is ok, and one of the few places that lists 46 gr max "necessary" for women, 56 for men... Most sites waffle and say (wrongly) we NEED the 70-100 gr, and that is such overkill! We are the most overfed nation on the planet.
As a veteran the VA hospital was pushing RNY at me (they offer nothing else), and I demanded the diet literature in advance, and sure enough it is MINIMUM 70-80+ gr protein a day...no discussion...so I will not be trusting them with my longevity. The dietitian also only allowed whey Protein Shakes, dismissed hemp seed (with complimentary amino to balance it out).. so it felt like a brick wall..but VA only teaches ONE way the USDA high carb 'plate' way.
If I do have bariatric surgery of some kind in future I will be sure I can support my kidney first before I agree to massive protein intake. Winding up on dialysis just to be thin is not a good choice as I see it.

Holy crap your incisions look SO much better than mine! Mine look like a bear attacked me! I also had reaction to the liquid hydrocodone, one side of my face got super red and extremely hot and my arms were hot and red. They told me to discontinue use and switched me to dilaudid pill form as I tolerated the dilauded in the hospital just fine. Turns out I didn't need it because the next day I really didn't need any pain meds anymore. But I am still super
Jealous of your belly. Mine has huge bruises around each incision.

I just had surgery on Tuesday and did not wean myself off of it and haven't had any problems. I didn't even think about it to be honest. I'm no longer taking it either. If you think you may have problems contact your doctor that prescribed it beforehand. You will have a lot of discomfort and you don't want to add something else to your plate.

HI all. I had my sleeve surgery on 30 March 2017 at Gisborne Hospital in New Zealand. I was 178.6 (393.7 Pounds) at my heaviest in November 2016. Weighed 156.4 (344.8 pounds)on the day of my surgery and now weigh 117.5 kg (259 pounds). It has not been easy at times but I am now walking between 75 kilometres (46 miles) and 100 kilometres (62 miles) a week with my dog (who has also lost 2.5 kgs!). I am going all the way and will never go back. I know that I will have hard times ahead but have really mind shifted the way I look at food. Smart Protein is everything at the moment for all meals. I admire each and everyone of you who have had or are considering this journey - Kia Kaha! This is a Maori phrase from New Zealand meaning "be strong". Let us try our very best and not be too hard on ourselves.

Your liquid pain Med is good, I got that too. But your nausea Med should be the zofran that melts on the tongue. You don't want nausea Med as a pill in the stomach. Our doc gave the zofran in pill form, but when I asked, he wrote me a scrip for the zofran melts. Once you have those two, you should be fine. Colace was a gel but it worked fine.
