  1. Hi, my surgeon told 4 of us that we didn't need to do a pre-op diet. He was just like don't gain any weight or our surgery will be pushed back. Our diet program is also very different. We are on clear liquids for 2 days and boom puree, feels a little fast but the Nutritionist said she doesn't want us on liquids too long because there's not that much nutrition.

  2. I think RNY might be a good option for you because of your size and the risk of another surgery later on if the sleeve isn't enough, maybe even the DS might be a good option for you.

That's what I've been hearing, a lovely woman I met yesterday told me that, with the sleeve it's a lot easier to gain all the weight back, and I'm not looking at this as a short term goal. I want to be realistic and I want to keep the weight off. I know I'm going to have to work, just like you said I don't want to have a revision. Is it a good idea to ask if they could remove my gallbladder? I know some people do good on the sleeve, but me I know my weakness which is sweets and fats (been cutting it out). I don't want to be an idiot and see the progress, and end up slipping.

  3. I just got my sleeve a week ago, and since I started my diet 3 weeks ago I have been able to drop 30 pounds already! I love my sleeve. I'd recommend trying that first.

Thank you! I guess I will stick with it [emoji5] was a bit hesitant after a talk with some amazing people that had RNY. I love everything about the sleeve, it's just I over think things.

  4. Thank you everyone for the support on the steps! Sucked it up and pulled through it and all the hard work paid off. Yesterday I was approved for surgery and have to meet with my surgeon. They want to do surgery by the end of this month or in June. I'm excited and scared at the same time. They are talking about doing the sleeve if I don't agree it'll be RNY. I know everyone's outcome is different. I just want a procedure where I'll be successful in. I would love to lose about 90lbs, it's just will this procedure be effective for me. I know RNY is really invasive, and a lot of people is recommending it. Right now I'm 210 and I'm 4'7....so I'm still a bit indecisive lol. Anyways THANK YOU everyone for the and support I really needed it and y'all came through!!

  5. But keep in mind that you have disorders like depression, or eating orders, etc., then it may be more intense. This was the first time I had ever seen a psychologist.

I have suffered with depression/self harm and it's really weird! People would think that after my accident I would jump right back into it. But honestly I feel that my accident is a blessing in disguise. I wasn't able to live my life, due to family issues. Once I got injured, it opened up my eyes and made me hungry to live my life. That's why I'm striving to better my health. I was a passive person that was taken advantaged of, and now I'm more assertive and stand up for myself....lol I'm just loving life. It's just I feel the psych needs to be realistic. I passed her psych eval, and is continually losing weight, so what is the hold up.

  6. My appointment with the psychologist was yesterday. He began by making sure I was aware of the details of the surgery and what is expected of me before and after. Then he asked about my childhood and my relationship with my parents. I then had 371 questions to answer. My favorite was (did I ever want to be a singer or park ranger. )LOL. Of course, everyone wants to be a singer. Other questions was( did I ever hear voices or see people that were not there.) Not anything about exercise.

I had to answer a ton of questions also and my psychologist said that I passed, and that I am mentally ready to make a change. But the steps is getting me lol

  7. Not a word about exercise, she was the psychologist for the bariatric program. All she said is that I have to show that I can lose some weight before the surgery. We never even discussed exercizee

Since joining the bariatric program I've been losing weight...I know 17lbs isn't a lot, at least I'm trying. For me there was no discussion about trying to lose weight the main focus was me complying with eating 45-65g of Protein and keeping a food log, sleep apnea, and doing the 5000 steps.

  8. Thanks! I haven't tried Powerade Zero yet, will get some. I have some packets and drops but for some reason I'm not into them. My favorite drink right now is actually Hint Water in cherry - it's just water + fruit essence, not sweet and just a hint of flavor as the name says but refreshing when you want a change from plain water.

Your welcome, do you have a Water Infuser? There are big pitcher ones for the fridge and cute portable ones.

  9. I'm curious if anyone is planning to use Gatorade G2 during post-op liquids. I see a lot of people on YouTube including it in liquid grocery hauls, but the stats on the kind I bought show too much sugar for my guidelines: 12 grams of carb, all sugar. 5 is my max.
I got a little nervous bc my nutritionist said I could drink it and when I asked what about the sugar, she said there's no sugar in it. Is there a different type I should be looking for?
My plan is to not drink it but use Vitaminwater Zero instead when I want some non-plain-water flavor.

My nutritionist also told me I was allowed to drink it. It still has sugar, just not as much as the regular. Powerade Zero is awesome! No sugar and great flavors. I also go to Wal-Mart and buy sugar-free juice packets...there's a bunch of varieties. I personally love the hawaiian punch and crush flavors. Oh and costco has this drink that is similar to Vitamin Water and sugar-free also

  10. Hi I also don't have diabetes, but my PCOS is really bad. It's frustrating for me because my doctors tend to dismiss my PCOS and I haven't received treatment for it. What helped me lose weight was cutting out sugary drinks, if you're addicted to sugary drinks, go for sugar-free. I also did my best to follow the diet the program gave me. Sweets are my weakness, and once I gradually cut it out, I noticed a lb drop here and there.

  11. This. All this pressure makes a lot of people say to themselves "to hell with it" after they got what they wanted and I can understand. Rebellion is not that uncommon and I'm glad nobody demanded something like this.

How are you supposed to prove these steps taken anyway? Do you have to wear something like a fitbit?

I'm thinking that she's looking at my weight charts. Because all she gave me was logs. So I'm really going on the weight if I lose about 3lbs, I have a feeling she'll clear. This facility is supposed to be the best on the island because its part of a trauma hospital...I think level 3 or 4, besides Kaiser. My very first visit, I met with PT and he was satisfied with the level of activity I could do. Its just the shrink

  12. I gotta ask, how the hell will the psych know how many steps you really took? Expecting a wheelchair bound person to walk that much is psychotic. I am against dishonesty, but if there ever was a good time to lie about something...

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] that is soooooo true! I would be dishonest and fake it, but that defeats my whole purpose. My reasoning is that they are actually looking at my weight, even though they're not talking about it. For instance...seeing if I'm either gaining or losing. So far I haven't gained any weight and every time I go in, I'm losing. I've lost 17lbs as of 4/11/17 so when I go in on 5/2/17, I think she's expecting me to lose at least 3-5lbs with the increase of activity. I'm just thankful that I don't have to pay for her visit out of pocket, unlike the dietician that's burning a hole in my pocket because ins. doesn't cover it. So everyone just wish me luck...I found some good seating exercising/yoga videos, tension bands, and my good ol' green balance ball

  13. I have a step counting application that counts if for me daily and I reach 10000 steps daily. Maybe your job is different than mine but have you tried counting your steps?? I am
Sure you can easily reach 5000 steps. It may seem like a lot but it's not.
After the surgery, I honestly stopped going to the gym because my life got super busy. I lost the weight within one year with 10000 steps and a proper diet. On the days I was behind on my steps, I would read while walking back and fort or put on some nice music and jump around to it. It's very very easy and fun.

I use the timing method because I can't constantly walk. So when I get tired I turn my timer off, and switch it back on till I make about 15mins. I also do other exercises to make up for my steps. The reason I was asking was because I'm in a wheelchair And I'm making an effort to do my steps, but I'm getting an ultimatum basically that if I don't reach 5000 steps by my next visit I'm not getting cleared. Even 3000/4000 is a no no. I'm cleared for surgery by everyone but her. I'm not riding on my disability, I just feel that with ppl in my state she should be realistic. I'm one of the lucky ones that can move all and use my limbs, what about those that can't use their legs? Are they gonna have to overwork their upper body? I just want to be able to help others like me, that want to do surgery.

I agree with both of you. While people do need a reality check (and often a good kick in the ass), compassion and empathy need to be at the heart of all aspects of this journey. (Just don't get me started on the newest "everyone criticizes" thread. I wouldn't get in the middle of that hornet's nest to be at goal tomorrow! [emoji4])

Your right some people need a good kick in the ass! I mean you see someone making a big change, passed your psych eval, is losing weight on every visit. Wouldn't you think the person is trying....? Lol I sooooo wanted to run her over [emoji23][emoji23] its like are you enjoying the $200 per visit the insurance is paying you, so you're gonna add more visits. I just wish she would be realistic.

  15. Yeah, I was given this goal of 10k steps a day, not as a requisite for anything, but because "it was healthy". Problem was, I had fractures in my L5/S1 vertebrae. I couldn't take out the trash without it absolutely killing my back. My step counter said I averaged a meager 800 steps as a result. 10k steps = more injured back, until a competent doctor came along (my internist), did tests and an x-ray and MRI on my back and found the fracture. Then I've had facet joint injections into my back since which immediately enabled me to reach 3000-6000 steps on a daily basis. A terrible health provider won't look for underlying causes for things. A good one will.

For me I'm an incomplete quadriplegic C4-C7 I may not be able to walk 5000 steps on a daily basis but I can walk 300ft with crutches without getting tired and I also try to convert it like they tell me too. 1000 steps is 15mins. So I do other things, I think it that shows the initiative that yes this patient is trying...yeah she's not reaching 5000 but is constantly aiming at all even if it's 2000 or 3000. I'm not looking for her sympathy I just want her to be realistic. I researched or tried to find someone in a wheelchair that had surgery, I only found 1. Thank God she documented her before and after, she was a complete paraplegic. So like I stated earlier, what if there was someone else that wanted to surgery that was in a wheelchair, and feeling hopeless...what would they do? Yes movement is key, it's the fact on how long you can actively move continuously continuously at a rate the you can't achieve?

  16. Thanks everyone!! she's 1 of 2 psychs there. I have no clue where the other one went. I'm just gonna tough it out and try to loose as much weight till May 2. And see what goes on, I have about 29 days so that should give me time to get my hussle on. I just wanted to know if anyone had to go through that, especially with a psych.

    Lol I mean 19days

  18. Insurance has been the only ones to require specifics. Idk how a psychologist can prevent you from having surgery. The surgeon makes that decision. Only recommendations should come the psychologist.

Well I'm guessing she has to make sure I'm mentally ready smh lol. I've made an initiative to even get to 3000/45mins a day, yet that's not good enough. Her answer is I have to make it at 5000/1hr 15 mins because after surgery They want us to aim for 10000/2hr 30min a day, this weight institute is supposed to be one of the best, but it has me questioning....yes I'm an incomplete quadriplegic, what about those that arent, it's practically scaring them away with this high expectations. Since I started in Dec. I have gained weight but lost weight. I want this surgery to prolong and enhance my life, making me able to overcome obstacles. Initially I want to encourage ppl that are in wheelchairs and obese to take a chance on surgery, I just won't recommend the facility I'm at lol

  19. My shrink didn't say anything of the sort! My Physical Therapist did mention 5000 steps, but only as a requirement, I've taken to heart. It's not mandatory for surgery at all. You should talk to the rest of your team about this.

The rest have cleared me, it's just her. I'm just gonna try and suck it up and try as much as possible. My bariatrician was like when do you feel like having surgery because you've done what you have to do, it's just up to psych. I understand that she wants me to succeed but I even asked her if I aim for 3000 or 4000 is it ok because of me being in a wheelchair? And she throws the curveball of we're aiming you to get to 10000 or 2 1/2hr. Im very fortunate that I'm able to walk with aids and stand, but what about others that can't?
