  1. Went to a Christmas party yesterday.  Annual event for the employees and families of my hubby's company.  Anyway, all of his coworkers noticed my weight loss, and talked to him about it, but I received only two comments directed at me.  One was from a wife, just saying I was looking good.

The other was an enlightening exchange.  It was one of my hubby's closer buddies, a really nice guy that I like too.. and he asked if I had lost any more weight.  (Everyone knows about my surgery, no secrets here!).  This wasn't part of an ongoing conversation.. he hadn't mentioned weight to me before.

I said, "Not this week.  And this morning I got on the scale and it said two zero zero point zero, freaking zero!"

(I've been totally stuck at exactly 200lbs for close to two weeks now, and am SO anxious for onderland!  It spilled out at the least provocation, lol!).

The enlightening thing, though was how silly it sounds to hear me bemoan no losses for a whole week!  I probably wouldn't really notice it, except it's THE major milestone (short of goal), and I've been close since Halloween.. and here it is.. December.  I guess I'm getting antsy.

I think Aunt flo is about ready for a visit, so I can expect another week or two before the scale shifts again.  Guess I might as well buckle down and ride it out.  I know the scale won't move for the next day or two because I went so far off my diet plan at the party, it isn't even funny.  We won't talk about that.. eek!  (Let's just say that I had my Christmas and New years desserts early and leave it at that).

Today is a new day, back on the wagon!!

Girl, you are winning our little "competition". I have gained and lost what I had lost, and now back to the lowest point. I'm 200g from seeing a new number. I do kg, so for me to see 6x.x is huge, I don't remember the last time that was. Maybe 20-25 years ago. You are doing awesome.

  2. Got my date, and I'm kinda bummed because its so far away:  March 14th.  My surgeon is a marshmallow about the dates, but his office staff is run by an 86-star general and she says I have to have 180 days in before we file with insurance -- not just 6 dietitian meetings, but 7, effectively.  And here I thought I could even get in early -- nope!  Oh well, it is what it is.

My personal goal is to lose 10 pounds by March 1st, but no more.  Feels doable.

Sorry you have to wait so long. I would however ask if there is a waiting list in case someone has to drop out once you have all your requirements and are cleared for surgery. My original date was April 18th, but I asked to be on the waiting list and got moved up to March 20th. I went from having 6 weeks to go to only have 13 days. And now I'm lucky to be surgery twin with the lovely @Berry78

Thanks. It's on @Berry78 You might not be, but I am. I stalled for almost a month just around 160, but then a steady drop the past 2 weeks. I was expecting another stall.

But you are on! Not that I'm going to do anything different thought lol

  4. I am now working as a server at Cracker Barrel, sometimes able to do 2 back to back 15 hour days which is a long way from where I was 1 year ago. But I am now down 197lbs @ 16 months post opEDF24AC5-114C-47D4-B386-D45E006DF0AC.thumb.jpeg.735165fcf48028e6f1b0e70716662ed9.jpeg

  5. The worst dumping episode

On Friday night I had the worst dumping episode to date. I have had nothing like it so far, just mildly and immediately after I have eaten, this was a case of late dumping.

I didn't eat much or as regularly as I would normally do, as I had the day off, and things are never how they usually are. I also donated plasma in the morning, not that I have ever had problems with that before.
In the afternoon I had a few reeses covered pretzels (Yes, I know) and didn't think anything of it. I was playing with my dog on the floor, was a little tired, but nothing unusual, and then woke up over and hour later. I was shaking, heart racing, sweating, legs like logs, stomach not too happy.

I knew I had to eat, so managed to get some food in me, forced myself to walk my dog half a block and then went to bed and stayed there for 12 h. On Saturday I still wasn't back to normal, a friend also telling me that I was extremely pale. As the day progressed I got better, and Sunday was no problem, went and worked out as normal.

But what a horrible experience. Guess who has another intensive to stay away from sugar.

    1. Meryline

      Meryline

@Apple1 Late dumping syndrome happens because of an increase in starches and sugars in your intestines. At first, the extra sugar causes your blood sugar level to rise. Your pancreas then releases the hormone insulin to move sugar (glucose) from your blood into your cells. This extra rise in insulin causes your blood sugar to drop too low. Low blood sugar is called hypoglycemia. And for us the food moves very rapidly from our stomach to our small bowls, meaning there is no food for the insulin to work on. Something like that.

      And thank you!

@Berry78 I have only been donating for a week, they won't allow you until at least 4 months post op, and that is only of your full blood work comes back perfect. It is very heavily regulated. Also, I don't think I have been working out as hard as you think I have. 2 weight training a week, and walking/nordic walking and some swimming. I'm not going back to full swimming until after Christmas because I know it drains me of calories, and walking and weight training I was used to from before the surgery, so not something new for the body, just less calories.

I'll talk to my NUT this week and see what she says. They didn't say anything against it when I mentioned it at my check up, but I'll ask again.

The incident was a late dumping because of too much sugar, nothing else. I will take make sure it doesn't happen in the future though, for sure.

@FluffyChix they check that to each time, and let you know if you get too low. They also have a very strict limit for when you are not allowed. They check it there on the spot, and if it's not okay, you don't donate. I'm not too low, just low compared to where my NUT wants me. Thanks for the link though. It's so strict on how often, how many hours between each donation etc. LIke now I'm not allowed to donate for a week. Nothing to do with my values, just their rules.

@Berry78 I donated today again. Plasma is not the same as blood. But no more morning donations, only afternoon ones with plenty of food and liquids before I donate. I have a week break now from donating. They also do a blood work every time I go, and if something is not right, they won't let me donate.

I would definitely try keto or low carb high fat (same line as steak and eggs) as it will keep you satisfied, create less carvings and keep you full at a time when your body doesn't have any other tools to keep you satisfied. (Tools like WLS) It will be tasty food, and you don't feel like you are missing out on anything.

  12. 5 month surgiversary today. I'm down 84 lbs, less than 22 lbs to normal BMI which is my goal.

I could not be more happy. In a month I see my neurosurgeon to decide I'm having back surgery on 10/3 or not. Hoping new MRI pictures will show an improvement in my back compared to the pictures in March.

I had one on 12/14/15, and it worked for a while, but weight gain made it not last, which is why I had the surgery. I'm hoping the weight loss will prevent a new one. I'm over 50 lbs less now than at the last back surgery. @Geri Marie

@Geri Marie for it will be a microdiscectomy, like my last surgery. I have a herniated disk pressing on my sciatica nerv. It's larger than last time, but the pain is less than last time thankfully. Thanks for offering though. Are you happy with the result of yours?

  14. First day on full liquids and boy, am I overestimating what I can eat!  It took my almost 2 hours to eat a container of Chobani.  Then, after about 15 minutes I started feeling fuller and fuller and fuller!  I started feeling back to normal late this afternoon so I tried about a third of a cup of soup.  It took relatively no time to realize I'd overdone it again.  Rather than sit and feel bad, I got up and did some work in the garage.  That seems to have helped relieve the pressure a bit.  Any tips from you experienced sleepers for us noobies?  How do I guesstimate how much I can eat?

    1. Meryline

      Meryline

Another tip is to not eat longer than 20min. I'm still not allowed to use more than 20min to eat, and I'm almost 5 months out. By prolonging the time you eat, it leads to eating more. maybe not now, but it will later.

I portion everything out. My meals are not larger than 5 oz in volume. Salads I can eat more, but I measure my protein out first.

Just one last comment before we agree to disagree.

You just had wls, you are not getting enough food to build at this point. At best, you are preserving muscles, which is great. https://www.muscleforlife.com/build-muscle-lose-fat/

This was just the first link, I can site a ton more. This one is interesting though.

Back in 2011-2012 I lost 67 lbs in a year, I also gained about 15 lbs of muscles. I worked out 6 days a week, but up to 12 times. I eat low carb. I lifted weights 4-5 times, and we are talking like 225 deadlifts, 160 lbs squats etc, with a trainer. I also ran (training for a half marathon), biked and swam, (training for a triathlon).

From what I understand (I could be mistaken), these changes you have made are fairly recent, meaning, there is not enough time to see if you have gained muscles (and as mentioned above, highly doubtful). You are loosing fat, meaning your muscles are becoming more prominent, it doesn't mean that you have built.

Last, a great link in general, nothing to do with this is better than that.

      http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/

He has 14 articles just discussing protein, all based on research. And he talks about all different kinds. I haven't read them all, and I can't say which he favors, but it is so interesting. He is siting a lot of research under each article. I though you might enjoy it.

  16. I was soooo jealous of the people in my support group. I was really like why do I not look like them and why am I not losing like they are? Then I did a side by side comparison for support group and noticed it. I really could not believe the difference. Sometimes we truly have to look backwards to see how far we have come. I never liked comparing myself to others but I always felt a little way about people reaching their goals faster then me. However, after this picture, I will never feel that way again. I am proud of my success and how far I have come. Granted I am starting to notice lose skin, but I will take that over being unable to jog up the steps or run across the street.

After reaching the goal of 200 lbs (finally dang I thought I would never get there lol). I went to the Spa. I was soo proud of myself and how I looked. I even got myself a Male Masseuse. He even complimented me on how soft my skin was and how well hydrated it looked. I felt so pretty with my facial and nails done. I did not worry if the bed was going to hold my weight or if I was going to fit on it. I fit just fine.

Afterwards me and my mom went to Buffalo Wild Wings (Her favorite Spot). I was able to fit into the booth without having to suck my tummy in, lift it up or push it down. I looked at my mom and I said, "Mom I fit!! I really fit!!" She started laughing at me. The Waitress was really confused. My mom told her, "My annoying daughter lost over 60 lbs and now can fit in the booth..sooo...this is an important moment for her."

Went to visit my Dad and he was shocked to hug me. (Note: My Dad lost a lot of his eyesight to Diabetes and he now takes very good care of himself. He was one of the reasons why I wanted to change). He said, "Moocha!! I wrap my arms around you now!!" I said, "Daddy so can I lol !!". We spent hours talking about Game of Thrones and how much weight we have lost. My dad used to weigh almost 385 lbs. He now weighs 220 lbs (he did this by going vegan and working out). I am very proud of him. It has taken him 2 years but he never gave up. The man is amazing.

I have placed a picture I took at the restaurant lol.

For me it's all about retaining muscles and eventually regaining the muscles that I have lost. In order to burn calories you need muscles, and muscles need protein. My NUT has given me 60 as a number based on my weight, but my last blood results at 3 months showed that it wasn't enough. And even 60g would be had for me not eating any kinds of legumes. I eat very little grain because I get bloated.

Depending on who did the research, you are going to find support for what you prefer. I followed a zero carbs diet for a while, and it did wonders for me. I only eat meat and drank water. Had I not needed rehab after back surgery and was at a facility where this was not possible, I probably would have stuck with it. There is also a lot of research out there to support this way of eating.

I'm not trying to convince you to change what you are doing, it's important to find what works for you, but take a quick look at the two links below.

My problem is that the only legumes I eat are peanuts. I also don't eat tofu. So for me to reach my protein goal I would have to rely heavily on protein shakes, which is something I don't want. I want to get my protein from food, and there is no way I could eat the amount of food it would take when I don't eat legumes or tofu. And I have tried, they just don't sit well with me, or they make me trow up.

  19. Well, all the status posts on AM workouts had me in the mood to try my hand at it again. I believe this was the first time I've taken a morning walk as a post op. It went.. ok. I really loved it for the same reasons I liked it preop, but I didn't drink enough water before I headed out the door and came back home very dizzy. So I'm gonna try again tomorrow, but this time I'll make sure I'm better hydrated before going out.

Since surgery I have gotten in the habit of bringing a bottle with me, I just feel like I need more water than I used to. I either carry it in hand, or have a water bottle belt to stick it in. I can really recommend it.

And good for you getting up and walking in the AM

  20. 7/8 - Extremely healthy keto day.

7/9 - Halo Top 1/2 Cup Chocolate Mocha Chip (I am in heaven!!). Healthy keto day. Weighed in at 208.4 lbs. Gained 1.4 lbs

7/10 - Hung out at Coney Island with my Mom, little Brother and my dog Buddy aka Rasta Scoobs. At Nathans Philly Chicken with no bun. The guy gave me the nasty look when I ordered it. (It was like really, you are going to come here and want to eat healthy at Nathans?). With a nasty tone, he says, "It's going to be the same price and the same amount of meat." So in an even nastier tone, I said, "Did I ask about the amount of meat or the price? No. I asked for a Philly Chicken with No Bun. Thank you." He just placed my order and my brother says, "Don't be surprise if you find some special sauce or a hair floating around in it lol."

7/11 - Keto Day. Decided to step on the scale and weighed 205.4 lbs. I was like WTF!!! What is going on? At this point my weight is fluctuating up and down. I think I maybe starting stall soon and my body is warning me. It could also be water weight.

7/12 - Another Keto Day. Went out to eat with my mom and brother and I was upset because I could have the Tacos of Bell. My mom keeps saying, "Oh you have your meal prep and you have been doing so good on your diet. Taco Bell is not good for you." I was like then why are you eating it. She says, "I'm grown and your mama. Do as I say and not as I do."  She is right but sooo annoying sometimes.

7/13 - My day was healthy. Received two new Hidrate Spark bottles. Gave one to my mom and brother. They are in love and I set them up on their phones.

Breakfast: 2 egg whites boiled with salt.

    Snack: 2 pickle slices

Lunch 1 - 2 : 2.1 oz of turkey with a tomatoes, a little cheese, romaine lettuce and my special dressing. (Broken up into 2 meals)

    Snack: 21 olives.

Dinner 1 - 2: 4 oz of ground beef, a little cheese, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and salsa. (Broken up into 2 meals)

I have looked into the Hidrate bottles, but ended up with a thinksport insulated instead. It keeps my drink cold forever, which is what I need. We all need to find what works for us though, right?

  21. Had my 3rd diet visit today (which is a restart in the process since I missed 2 appts) and it went very well. I lost 10.58 pounds (4.8 kg) since my last visit of April 28, about 10 weeks ago. They were very proud and encouraging. I talked a long time with the NP (bless her patience!) about some of my fears and anxieties about getting surgery and besides giving me lots of good info she reminded me that since I still have five visits to go before we can submit for approval, I have plenty of time to make decisions.

I am enjoying the new protein-focused diet which I find easy to stick to at the moment, and I am swimming every day which is also helping! Between the nutrition changes, therapy, and sleeping a bit better I am feeling pretty positive about my chances for success.

It looks like December is totally out for surgery since my final visit with the surgeon is 12/15 and the NP said it's 3-4 weeks for approval usually. So looking at the middle or end of January at the earliest. That will change some of my plans for school, but thankfully I planned ahead and I already have all the classes I need to transfer in the fall, so I can just take online or half-semester courses to allow for some downtime in Jan & Feb. I do need to be enrolled in at least 6 credits to keep some of my merit-related things in place, but I think I'll find something that works.

So once I get approved, they schedule a pre-op visit with anesthesia to get cleared for surgery and I will attend a class that gives all the nitty gritty about post-op care and diet. That will also be the start of the 2-week liquid diet which will continue for 2 weeks after surgery (or 3 weeks if I change to the VSG). I'm really looking forward to getting to this stage! I'm at 362.75 pounds at the moment and between the liquid diet and my pre-op diet changes, I would love to hit the operating table at 299. Can I do it in six months?????? :D

Sorry for the rambling update! Hope everyone has a great weekend, and stay cool out there!!!!

  24. Well i am officially out of the 300 club, and I couldn't be happier!:)

  25. So I've been on solid/soft foods now for a while. Have only had one episode of throwing up foam after a run in with 2 bites of a bunless hamburger - the hamburger won. It's weird because I've been able to eat lean ground beef! Maybe the density, fat content, ...? Oh well.. nice to have something to deter me from burgers in general :) Today was the first day in a while I've really felt FATIGUED. I was having so much energy but went to visit my family in Asheville this weekend and forgot to bring the protein shake I usually have in the morning (still usually rely on them to get my full amount of protein). I of course tried to compensate with my intake but should have really just gone ahead and drove the miles to the grocery store and gotten a few bottles. Goes to show how important protein intake is!

Side note... I've been having "hunger pangs" which I think are just stomach acid. Usually my calcium makes it settle down but lately I've been having it more and more. Currently on 40 of omeprazole... should i ask to up it or just keep on with the current plan?

I was on Nexium after surgery, and I constantly had like burning hunger pains. I stopped Nexium as I should after 8 weeks, but no luck, everything came back up except yogurt. I tried half the dosage, didn't work either. Doctor told me to stay on 40mg. Then I was at my support group, and we have a doctor there, and she told me to get on pantoprazol. Night and day difference. No longer burning hunger pains. I'll try and go off them in a few week, first by half dosage, and then completely. Hopefully it will work.
