    Help! Gaining weight!

It's completely normal to gain weight after surgery. It's because of the IV fluids and your body trying to heal from surgery. My nurse even said to not even bother weighing yourself when getting home because it'll be higher. Just weigh yourself a week after and you'll see that your weight has dropped significantly! I lost 10 lbs my first week. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Contraception (TMI for some)

IUD is perfectly safe for women who have not had children. Doctors who don't recommend it are using old reasoning (because the cervix is tighter and can cause more discomfort after implanting). Best decision I've made was to get the IUD. It was uncomfortable for the first few days but afterwards, no periods, no more cramping, and I don't have to remember taking the pill everyday. Weight loss doesn't inhibit birth control, it makes one more fertile because of less adipose tissue. So yes, use birth control and use backup if you're really worried. How often do you weigh yourself?

Twice a week. My surgery date was a Friday. So I weigh myself on Friday mornings and Monday mornings. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I'm struggling with muscle loss.

Everyone has really good suggestions. sleep more, add extra Protein, etc. if you're that active, I'd suggest bumping up your carbs too. You can still stay in keto. Your muscles do require carbohydrates for strength. If you want to add supplements, glutamine and creatine will also help with preventing muscle loss. However, creatine does cause Water retention so you may notice you're not "losing" as much but it's just water. Glutamine is a supplement that's used at our hospital to prevent muscle wasting in patients with hypermetabolic syndrome. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    EKG Anomalies

I wouldn't worry too much. I would ask your primary physician to refer you to see an actual cardiologist where they can do additional testing and to see if those prior results are just anomalies or is an indicator of cardiac disease. A cardiologist will have more expertise in interpreting these results rather than a pcp. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Can't find any exercise I like!

Prior to surgery, I had a trainer and I ended up really loving powerlifting. Lifting weights was really fun for me. I also did mma style fighting with jui jitsu. I plan on going back to that once I've healed more. Cardio kickboxing and boxing is also really fun. I'd suggest getting a trainer that makes your workouts fun and to achieve small goals along the way. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hunger

After surgery, there are additional signaling in the stomach from the trauma of surgery and increased acid that may be confused for hunger pains. If you're right after surgery, it's probably not real hunger and most likely head hunger. I had serious head hunger after the first week of surgery. I watched a ton of food cooking videos which helped although may be too tempting for others. Just take it a day at a time I actually started feeling real hunger and stomach growling about a month after surgery. But the intensity is definitely a lot less than before surgery. Which helps me a lot with making better food choices. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Diet Coke

Diet Coke does not have any calories. However again, as others have mentioned, you should stick with your doctor' orders. Also, increased carbonation can affect you (gas is not pleasant) and I'd highly suggest trying to make changes instead of sticking to old habits. Have ice Water with lime or lemon juice squeezed in. Add some Truvia or Splenda for additional sweetness if you want. I loooooove Coke Zero but haven't touched it once since surgery and frankly, I don't really miss it that much. I think it's definitely a mental mindset of making sure I make healthier decisions. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Strength Training

I was given the ok for light strength training at 3 weeks out. Surgeon recommended to take it easy (I used to do powerlifting) and just listen to my body. So far so good! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. Yup. Hit my stall at 4 weeks post op which was exactly when I started my soft food diet. Gained 2 lbs and then lost 1 lb. scale didn't move for about 10 days. I think what broke it was 1) giving my body time to adjust 2) make sure I'm drinking enough and 3) hitting the gym really hard. Just recovering from my stall and I've lost about 2 lbs this week. Yay! 12. My bariatric nurse told me it would take 9-14 days without a BM after surgery. It took me 9 days and finally went. It was very loose and funny. So apparently that's normal... but I felt super bloated. And especially after soft foods, I had to take miralax and milk of mg to get things moving again. Now I go about every 2-3 days. If things get super uncomfortable and painful, go talk to your doctor or go to ER. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Malabsorbtion with sleeve?

With the sleeve, you shouldn't have malabsorption. However with the reduced intake of food, you may not get all the nutrients you need, hence the Vitamins and supplements. I don't think you'll have a problem with medication with the sleeve. This is a great question for your doctor. I talked to mine about this specifically because I plan on getting pregnant and I didn't want issues with malabsorption so the sleeve was the best option and not the RNY or bypass. 3 week stall

Update - my stall finally broke. 10!days and the scale finally budged. Last Friday I was still at the same weight. Today Monday morning, lost 1 lb. things I did differently the past week: walk more, drink more fluids, get my Protein in, upped my carbs a little, went to gym. I think the gym helped out a lot. I did a lot of strength training this time. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    November Sleevers!

Sleeved Nov 4. SW 244 CW 227. First two week i was pretty tired. When I started soft foods in week 4, I had a lot more energy. However, since starting soft foods, I stalled. Haven't lost any weight for a week. To help with getting in fluids, I've been using the crystal light liquid. strawberry lemonade is my favorite. But I do agree, taste buds are slightly different Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Wow. I had a consultation with dr Kim bariatric and I chose not to based on previous lawsuits they had and also they're very far away. Good thing I chose a different doctor. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Morphine drip?

Talk to your doctor. There are non-narcotic options for recovering addicts and others who can't have narcotics due to allergy or intolerance Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App Agreed. Since you're recovering and don't want to be exposed to narcotics, please talk to your surgeon about alternatives. Some people do extremely well with just extra strength liquid Tylenol. Just talk to your doctor and see how it goes from there. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Self pay

I'm also self pay and everything was inclusive for the surgery itself . I had mine done in Texas. Only thing I had to pay extra for were the pre op testing. Some of the cardiac stress tests and ultrasound tests were expensive and I paid over $2000 out of pocket for all of the extra procedures prior to setting a surgery date. But I haven't received any extra bills for the surgery itself. Fingers crossed. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Morphine drip?

Yes! Nurses told me that it's better to use the morphine pump when I start feeling pain because once the anesthesia wears out, it'll be quite painful and uncomfortable. I used it for about 24 hours every 3-4 hours. I went home next day and used liquid hydrocodone/Tylenol for about 6 days. I had to ween myself off and just stuck with Tylenol for another 2 days so I could drive and go back to work. Completely pain free after that. Everyone's pain tolerance is different and kudos to those that hardly took pain meds. I'm a bit of a weeny. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Time off

I would drive myself crazy if I stayed at home for 6 weeks. But that's just me. Everyone has their preference and sometimes it's job dependent. I went back to work a week and a half later. I worked part time and slowly worked my way up to a full work day because of lack of energy and mental fogginess. I'm in my 4th week post op and I feel almost normal. 3 week stall

I am having that same issue right now. it is extremely discouraging. I had to talk myself down from crying in the doctors office. a few tears escaped. what happened with me was my first week follow up, i was down 22 lbs. then 2 weeks later I was only down 5 more. that was a week ago. now today, I am up 4... so TECHNICALLY I am still down 1 lb from the 1 week follow up (terrible progress in my opinion) but a gain is a gain. I was cleared to exercise today so I am hoping that will get me going again. I have upped my protein, i wasnt drinking my shakes now i force myself to drink at least 2 8oz homemade shakes to give me at least 48g every day. Also gonna start tracking calories. I've been tracking my calories and I've been consistently around 400-500 calories a day. But I know I need to get more protein and fluids in. Sometimes I think I should go back to a liquid diet but I know that this is just a phase and I do enjoy having the extra energy. TMi - I've also been quite backed up and been struggling with getting a BM. Hopefully when it happens, I'll drop the extra weight that I'm carrying around in my gut. I feel so bloated. 3 week stall

I lost 16 pounds the first three weeks when I was on liquids after surgery. I started soft foods beginning week 4 and I gained two pounds even though I've been sticking to my diet and exercising. It's very discouraging. I think I will also up my Protein and drink more fluids and hopefully weight will drop again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Life long food

Avoid high sugar foods like dessert. First hand experience today. I caved in and took a few bites of pie that my husband had around. I immediately felt nauseous and threw up. Lesson learned. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I also slept a lot the first week. I had bursts of energy but it usually quickly faded and I took a lot of naps. Second week it's a little better. I'm starting my fourth week and I'm 90% normal but feel tired once in awhile. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
