  1. You should definitely report this to your surgeon asap even if you're no longer worried. Any extreme pain is definitely on the list of things to notify the doctor about.

    Carbs post surgery

It would be best for you to talk to your nutritionist asap! I only lost 15lbs in the first 3 weeks -- do not listen to people bragging about losing 30lbs in 3 weeks -- for all you know they started at 500lbs, so of course they lost more at the beginning. This is *your* journey and you just need to talk to the nutritionist, get some recommendations or a brush up on the nutrition instructions and focus on yourself.

Regarding severe bone loss after RNY

Ps I take 4 Flintstones complete and 2 500mg Bariatric Advantage Chewy Bites (Strawberry) and Nascobal B12 nasal spray weekly. But I had RNY (this is the RNY forum).

Regarding severe bone loss after RNY

This is what you call an unreliable source. She has a degree in divinity and in massage therapy. She isn't even qualified to speak on this stuff. Look for peer reviewed sources written by scholars with nutrition and medicine credentials. This article is worthless. Also it's laughable that the article mentions her being a member of the American Medical Writers association as if it credentials her -- anyone can become a member. Best of all, the website where this article is posted is selling Calcium supplements! The author is trying to sell you a product. This is exactly why peer-reviewed scholarly sources are where we need to get our information when making decisions on our health. The one good thing about this link is that the bottom has a list of articles from which the author claims she got her info (even though she doesn't properly cite them) and the articles themselves provide some insight (but not enough to be extremely worried -- maybe enough to be diligently adherent with Vitamin supplementation recommendations).

    Food Aversions

I don't like any meat anymore. Reheated meat is an absolute no-no. I like fish, but pretty much all meat makes me nauseous. I love tofu and tolerate it very well. Refried Beans with melted cheese are another favorite. I am almost 3 months postop and pretty sure I'm gonna need Protein shakes forever. I sometimes have whole wheat saltines with nut butter (I like sunflower butter actually bc I'm allergic to peanuts). I make chili a lot and freeze it in small containers. One thing that actually makes my pouch happy is vinegar cole slaw. I don't know why, but it just does. If only that had protein.
  6. I use flintstones complete and Bariatric Advantage Strawberry calcium chews. The chews are like a starburst with artificial sweetener ... I love them. I used Flintstone vitamins as a kid so I like Flintstone completes.
  7. Also I sometimes cook an egg on super low heat and covered while I hop in the shower ... it cooks perfectly on very low heat in 10 min and is as tolerable as poached egg.
  8. Poached egg is tolerable to me but scrambled blehhhh. I just end up needing to lie down from nausea if I have scrambled egg.
  9. Also, there are no "buts" with hydration. You can drink the water. My nutritionist told us to set a timer for every 15 min and drink a 2 oz little cup of water every 15 (or protein shake) and always more than 64oz water per day. When I don't focus on hydration goals I end up feeling like total crap. You got this surgery. Do what you need to do to be well and don't make excuses.
  10. Has anyone else hit a point where they are feeling hungry but everything tastes disgusting and feels uncomfortable in their pouch? I don't even want to eat.

    Everything tastes yucky

Sorry to hear this. I'd have to defer to your surgeon and nutritionist. Hope you're feeling better soon.
  12. I ate something I shouldn't have eaten on Saturday (fried food -- I know it was dumb). Now it is the following Wednesday and ever since then my stomach feels sore. It feels like the day after drinking too much alcohol, only it's lasted numerous days. I'm taking Carafate and Gaviscon with little relief. Lying down makes me feel better. It happened one other time and went away after about a week. I even went last time to see my surgeon and had an ultrasound and labs that came out normal. Anyone else have this happen? I just want to feel better again. [emoji27]

That is a nightmare, Michelle. You should sue the crap out of your surgeon. I'm a nurse and I review hospital stays for an insurance company. The insurance company should also be going after the hospital because the hospital needs to be paying for all of this mess and you deserve millions in pain and suffering. There is no good excuse for things getting that bad or starting to begin with (the original error). You should be a multi millionaire some day. I'm so sorry to hear all that you've been through.

    What's happening to me?

I had about 5 chicken nuggets with ranch dressing. Never again! You're right about sleep. Lying down and sleeping makes it go away temporarily. The only drawback is that I can't drink water while I sleep. Lol

    Protein shakes,

Ps it's horrible after a while but worth it. When you are able to eat again it is glorious.
  16. Jill_Me

    Protein shakes,

I loved premier protein preop and didn't want them postop. I'm all about EAS myoplex chocolate fudge because it provides protein AND calories.
  17. I haven't had it, but small bowel ileus is common after surgery. It should go away with conservative treatment like fluids, bowel rest. If it doesn't then the surgery team will see about the need for surgery. I'm sorry that I don't know anything about epigloic appendigitis. I am a nurse and had to look that one up. If you really want to know what's going on an don't feel that anyone is telling you, ask for the nurse manager and tell him or her. They may be able to send an advocate to help explain things if the medical team isn't doing it (like they should). You deserve to understand what's happening. I hope your pain is under control and that you're doing better really soon!
  18. I paid for the premium membership on MyFitnessPal to keep track of my macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat etc) and have it connected to my Fitbit as well. I find it to be pretty user friendly with entering foods, searching for the ones in already in the database, and changing up goals and such. I also have a few friends on there that I keep in touch with. I need to be better about it, so maybe i should get more friends . Anyone want to be my MyFitnessPal friend? Anyone anxious about new food?

Chicken Caesar is good but the chewing is essential. I think it will be long term with the chewing unless we are really stretching out that hole between the stomach and intestine. I get what you means that its weird and sometimes gross, but with the salad i dont feel like it is gross. I tried a piece of breakfast sausage this morning and could barely take it after a few bites. Never again. My favorites still remain -- retried beans and lean beef chili with pinto beans and Greek yogurt. I'm okay with this after trying new things and not enjoying them at all. When can I start smoking again?

I was using an ecig for over a year before I quit for the surgery. I was told that I can never go back again. You cannot smoke again with a stomach the size of a pouch. It is way too dangerous. Did you know that smoking is a major risk factor (arguable cause) of stomach cancer? Now you have a tiny stomach and no matter how badly you want a cigarette, you've got to have a death wish to pick up the cigs again. I'm speaking as a woman who loves smoking more than anything. The only way I'll smoke again is if I'm already close to dying.

    Time Off Work

I work from home and went back to working after 1 week, but my surgeon said I'd need 2 weeks if I wasn't working from home.

    Anyone anxious about new food?

I was allowed to have red and green leaf lettuce only after only 2 weeks, but I didn't want it. I started with chicken Cesar salad incidentally when a friend offered me some at around 6 weeks postop. I chewed it very well and even had a few little crunchy croutons. I love the crunch of the romaine hearts. It felt odd at first to chew salad to applesauce consistency in my mouth but now I think I love salad more than I ever did before. I used to inhale salads and often wasn't fully digesting them (tmi). Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Supplements

Nascobal is the name of the B12 nasal spray but the Calcium that comes with it and the Nascobal come from Nutrition Direct. https://www.drugs.com/pro/nascobal.html I find it really hard to take 4 of the calcium pills per day and the chalkiness is offensive. I recently got Bariatric Advantage strawberry chews and really like the taste. They're like candy, but they're expensive. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Anyone anxious about new food?

Yes, I was very anxious. I had to make sure to follow mindful eating guidelines given by my nutritionist (no eating at desk or while watching tv or looking at phone/tablet/computer, putting down the fork after each bite and chewing to applesauce consistency before swallowing). Another thing a friend told me was to make sure to have lubricant for certain foods. I was eating turkey thigh and had a lot of discomfort but have avoided that by making a sort of turkey salad with light mayo. Also even though I was told not to drink while eating I take very small sips of Water while eating salad. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    No insurance route

Also be awAre that if you are hospitalized after your surgery because you have something caused by the surgery that wasn't approved by insurance then often the insurance will deny that claim as well. It may be a gamble that costs a lot of money. I work in the industry and have seen this happen, but not with WLS (seen it with Breast augmentations). Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
