  1. So, it has been a while since I've been active in this community, but I just wanted to share my story and my current struggle with regain. I still feel like having VSG WLS (March 2013) was the best decision of my life. I remember the first year -- the "honeymoon phase" -- when the weight just flew off! It was definitely a major adjustment, having such positive feedback from friends and family. Honestly, I hated the attention I was getting, because I felt like I "cheated" having the procedure. When people asked how I lost the weight, I usually tried to avoid telling them about the surgery, but I'm naturally and honest over-sharer, so I forced the words "weight loss surgery" out of my mouth, and cringed. Nevertheless, I became obsessed with losing weight, and living a healthy lifestyle. Before I knew it, a little over a year later, I had reached my goal weight (140lbs - lowest 135)! I had just turned 20 years old, and I was on top of the world.
For the first two years after reaching my goal, maintenance was a breeze. I would gain 3-5 pounds, notice I was snacking a little too much, and correct my actions, and drop the weight. Then, in July 2016, I met a wonderful man and shortly after we moved in together. For the first few months of cohabitation, I went about my normal routine, prepping meals on Sunday for the week, walking every day, and living life as usual. Then came a new "honeymoon phase" of our relationship. Date nights, eating out, spending the weekends in, snacking in front of the TV. I was so happy and in love, that my health and fitness goals went by the wayside. It felt like I blinked and all of a sudden, I had gained 20 pounds in a year. Every time I tried to get back on track, I'd drop 8-10 lbs in a month, and then my SO would insist on indulging in one guilty pleasure or another, and just like that, diet: derailed.
One month ago, I stepped on the scale and it read 163lbs, and I said to myself, "Enough is enough!" I had seen a lot of popularity of the ketogenic diet floating around social media, and since it was the only "diet" my SO would agree to try, we went for it together. After a month, I had dropped 6lbs, but I was having tremendous cravings for sweets. Not your typical chocolates and caramels, but I just wanted some fruit! How I longed for a banana... I quickly decided the "keto lifestyle" was not for me. I've since switched my focus to whole foods -- lean meat, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies and lots of Water. I aim for +/-1200 calories a day. I've also joined Beach Body On Demand, and have been religiously "pressing play" on my Insanity workout program. It has only been a week, but since starting, my sleep has improved as well as my mood. Unfortunately, the scale started climbing! Today I weighed in at 158 (+2lbs). I've read a lot of forums that it's probably just Water retention, and my muscles trying to repair themselves, but BOY, it is discouraging. I'm worried the gain may be due to an under active thyroid. Regardless, I've made a commitment to myself to press on and finish the 60-day "Insanity Challenge," and see where that leaves me.
I decided to revisit this forum, in search of support, and to see if anyone has experienced regain of this magnitude at 3+ years post-op, but I hadn't found much on the topic. So I decided to share a brief summary of my life post-op. Despite the regain, I still consider my VSG story a success. When I think of how far I've come, I realize I'm much closer to my goal weight now than I was before I was sleeved, and that's always a relief. It's time for me to get back to basics and use the tools I've acquired along the way to get me back on track. Weight loss & maintenance is truly a lifelong journey, and there is no "real" finish line.

  2. Mine started at around 3 months and stopped around 6 or 7 months. I had hair to my butt and needed 4 elastics to hold it in a ponytail. I now need 1 elastic and can wrap it 3 times. I get about 90 g of protsim a day amd always take my vitamim and Biotin. Nothing helped. My surgeon said its just a natural process and will grow back. Now 11 momths out it is growing back, ive cut it halfway up my back so it doesnt look so long and thin. I also didnt dye it that whilevtime because i was worried it would harm it more. It will grow back eventually. Hang in there!!

  3. My physician does not require ya to take them forever, but for the healing process he would prefer it. I was told no Flinstones.< br>

My surgeon recommended the Flimtstones Childrens chewables, and to take 2 a day. Not together, one in morning and one at night. He just recommended tlno gummy vitamins. Also, I buy the Walmart brand, they are 7.99 for 150 in the bottle so it lasts me a little over 2 months, very affordable. Im almost 10 months post vsg and all bloodwork has came back excellent!

  4. Hello, I am starting my pre-op liquid diet tomorrow and my surgery is scheduled for 2 weeks from now. I've been reading some of the posts and they are really scaring me. I was nervous before but also very excited about changing this part of my life. Is there anyone out there that has had a positive post-op experience? Also, is it true that if you have reflux prior to surgery that it will get worse after? Thank you so much.

Remember, everyones surgery is different. I also was worried about all the has pains everyone talks about and I had zero gas pains! I was up walking around about 3 hours after surgery. I had no issues whatsoever. I had surgery on Friday and was driving my kids to school on Monday. I wanted to go back to work in a week because i felt that good, but couldnt get a sooner post op appt and my employer required a release from the surgeon for me to return. I also had reflux befpre surgery and rarely have it now, if I do its because I may lay down to soon after eating. Read peoples posts but dont let them get in your head. Go into surgery date with positove vibes and just know that it will be one of the best decisions you made. Good Luck amd keep us posted on how you are doing. [emoji4]

  5. Hey all! I got my sleeve on 11.8.17. As soon as I got onto soft foods I stopped losing for a couple of weeks and now I feel after dropping my initial 50 lbs i am stuck again. It’s been maybe 2 weeks and I’ve seen no changes. Is this common?
I may be comparing myself to others I know who have had it done and didn’t have issues losing early after their surgery.

Wow 50 lbs. in 2 months is Awesome!!! Seems like its jist a stall, your body getting adjusted to your new habits. Its pretty common.

  6. Hey guys,
    I’m 25 and I’m 1 week post op.
The first few days I had horrible gas, but now I basically feel fine.
    broth isn’t appetizing at all.
I’m just drinking crystal light with unflavored Protein Powder.
I don’t have trouble getting anything down I’m just so hungry.
I can hear my belly make little noises too.
I just need to chew something
I read online that sometimes nutritionists let people jump ahead to stages if they are holding things down well, true?
    Anyone else struggling like this?

Everyones program is different. I went home from the hospital on soft foods. Many surgeo.s have their patients on liquid for a bit, but not mine. When in doubt call your nutritionist or surgeons office.

  7. Thank you so much. How do you get past the not being able to drink fluids while eating? Sometimes it feels like the good is stuck.

You have to make sure anything you eat is very moist. Soft white fish goes down very easy like haddock or cod. Also, chicken thighs, add some chicken broth to it and it will slide down easier. I lived off cottage cheese and yogurt when i was forst sleeved. Scrambled eggs mamy people eat, but they came right back up for me. Now 9 months out I can get them down sometimes, but not all the time, not sure why. Good luck, just try small bites and youll figure out what works for you, everyone is different .

  8. The 6 months most insurances require was a great starting point. My surheon has a requirement thay you lose 5% of your body weight before surgery. He wants to ensure you can make the needed chamges to be successful. When i started felt the 6 months was a lifetime away, but with all the preop appts he scheduled, it was here in no time. Take these 6 months to get ready for your new life.

  9. This is one rule that I did not follow. I drank coffee the first day home from the hospital. 2 days after surgery. My doc allowed Decaf after 2 weeks, but I couldnt wait. It agreed with me fine, but that doesnt mean it will for anyone else. I also had 0 complications and had no problem getting 2 Protein shales down within 2 days after surgery.

  10. 12 days post op and have weighed everyday. The scale has not moved not one pound. It has done a number on my emotions and I wish I hadn't. Reading lot of post help me realize, it happen to many. But weighing daily plays mind games with you forsure. I actually took measurements before surgery and again yesterday, and I have lost several inches. Which is a good thing. Good luck in your journey.
