  1. Just skip your Vitamins for the next two days to see if that helps. That way you'll have more info for your surgeon. Two days won't make a difference to your nutritional status... I wouldn't advise someone to avoid vitamins longer than that without their physician's ok.
If you still feel sick without vitamins, then you know to look elsewhere.
    Keep us posted!

Thank you! I didn't take one tonight, just the thought of it was upsetting my stomach. I hope it goes away by tomorrow, it's a horrible feeling. Thank you.

  2. I have been on regular foods since I was 6 days pre-op. I know it was early, and I ended up back on soft foods for another couple of weeks. I have been doing FINE. Until yesterday. I started feeling kind of sick. Very gurgly stomach, not able to eat much. Im not sure if its food or the Water or if it could be my Vitamins, which have been REALLY GROSSING ME OUT!! I see the surgeon Thursday, I hope he lets me switch vitamins.

  3. Has anyone had any issues with taste after surgery? I was sleeved on 7/11 and can't seem to tolerate Protein drinks, protein powders, artificial sweeteners, dairy. Everything tastes so sweet or milk tastes so sour. I've ordered a protein powder made from egg whites hopefully that will be better. Even Water doesn't taste very good. Hoping this is temporary. It has been a struggle getting my fluids in and I haven't met protein goals yet.

Hi. I was sleeved on June 14, and I have the SAME issue. Pre-op, I LOVED my Protein Shakes, now, I can't stand them! I tried a meatball, I used to love them...not the same. I can only drink water if it has tons of ice in it! And even then, it doesn't always taste "right". I hope this passes with time. I have switched to Fairlife milk, thats really good, and extra protein.

  4. I am in Bensalem which is north of Philadelphia.
I go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week and power walk for 30 min. I usually do about 2 miles. It's not a lot, but at least it's something. Since my surgery on 5/17 I am only down about 25lbs. 40 total since I started the 10 day pre liquid diet.
I have been slacking though because I took 2 weeks of vacations to the beach this month.
I think 17lbs if you have not been working out is great!

I DEFINITELY plan on working out very soon. I have a trainer lined up, I'm going on vacation Monday, then after that, I'm going to really start working hard!
Sounds like you have a pretty good routine! Good luck!!!

  5. I am so frustrated! I was sleeved June 14 and I lost 14lbs right away (I assume from all of the fluids I was given in the hoapital) but since then, I have only lost 3. I have been cleared for all foods since day 6 post op. I know I'm not drinking enough and I'm not exercising. I just joined a gym, so I am hoping that gives me the kick start I need.

  6. I am having the same issue. I know I'm not eating slow enough, but i often forget when I'm eating. I'm making changes, but it's still difficult to beak old habits. I'm down 40lbs since I was sleeved in May, so I guess I'm doing something right?

I was sleeved June 14, and I have only lost 17lbs since surgery. I'm getting really frustrated. Are you exercising? I just sent in paperwork to join a gym, I am starting to worry that this isn't working for me.

Where are you in Pa? I am about 15 min from the Phila airport.

  7. Hi. I am about 4.5 weeks out from my sleeve surgery, my dr has had me on regular food since day 6 post op. I had gone back to soft foods about 2 weeks ago, and just started eating meats again this week. Tonight, for the first time, I went out to dinner with my family, I had a chicken caprese meal. I ate about 5 bites of chicken, 2 pieces of motzarella and maybe 5 crouton size pieces of roasted potato. I stopped when I started feeling full, but I can't help but wondering if its too much. My dr said I can eat breads and stuff AFTER I eat my Protein which I do....(make sure I eat protein first).

  8. That's old lazy guidelines. My hospital had the exact same guidelines and changed them two years ago to follow the most up to date material (which is you can have Clear Liquids up to two hours prior). The honest answer is nothing to eat or drink after midnight is the simple and easy to remember, there's no confusion. But if a patient is having their surgery at 7 am and another at 4 pm and they're not following NPO after midnight that's a very different thing.

And the other issue you frequently have patients who get confused with the guidelines (oh I had coffee with milk this morning) (yes back coffee counts as clear liquids). I understand the logic of simplifying things as you don't want to confuse people. But the whole nothing to eat or drink after midnight is simply outdated guidelines that some are too lazy to update because they're creatures of habit

I just did what they said. Not drinking didn't bother me, I'm not a big drinker anyway unfortunately.

  9. It's normal for some yes, some days were better for me then others, the fatigue was the worse and Water nausea.(for 8 weeks)I'm almost 4 months post op, and I feel completely normal. No deprevation or fatigue. You'll get there !! Hang in there!

Thank you. It really does help when I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope it starts getting better soon.

  11. I felt normal about 6 weeks out. Each week got better. It was slowly changing. My energy was slowly increasing but it was getting there. Now I feel normal most of the time. I have days were I am out of it or extremely exhausted. I just try to relax and do as much as I can.

Thank you. I will be almost 6 weeks out when I go on vacation, so I'm hoping I feel good. I feel much better today sticking to softer foods and no meat! I'm going to see if I can get down a Protein Shake tomorrow.

  12. The early weeks post-op are the hardest part of the journey, in my opinion. That's why every time there is one of the "when should I go back to work" posts, I advise people to take as much time off as their personal, financial, and work situations will allow. When you are relying on liquids and mush for any nutrition, it is hard physically and emotionally.
It does get better, and in my case, it got better fast. I took 6 weeks off of work, and that allowed me to progress through the food stages with a little more ease. I can say right now, that had I had to deal with all the corporate drama that my work brings, I would have been depressed. It would have been next to impossible to work and be successful with everything (work and diet).
The other thing that people have to accept is that what is "normal" will change -- even months and years post-op. That old life and way of eating is gone, and, frankly, it should be gone. That's what led to obesity in the first place. That's why changing the relationship with food is the real key to this journey -- not the surgery itself.
I'm 9 months post-op. I've lost 205 pounds. I am 8 pounds from a "normal" BMI and 12 pounds from goal. I feel and look better than I ever have in my adult life. Life is wonderful, and having this surgery was the absolute right decision.

Congratulations! That is awesome! I am only 3.5 weeks out, I have had a lot of trouble eating and at times, drinking. I think I was put on meats and food too soon (6days post op) so I decided to go back to soft foods for awhile, I hope.it helps!!!

  13. This is a bit difficult, since I followed my plan (so the plan told me what to add and when).
Basically, try and keep to one type of consistency for a week at a time, and by time you are 8-9 weeks out, you'll add in everything.
So, starting today, make sure everything is a runny puree consistency. Smooth, thin, will run off a spoon. Add liquid if things are too thick. (You can do tuna or beef in the blender if you want.. puree is about the texture, rather than what you are eating.)
At 4 weeks, you move to thick and smooth. Like greek yogurt. Will stand up on a spoon, but still no chunks.
At 5 weeks, you move to soft chunks (like unblended split pea soup). You'll need to chew a bit, but everything should turn to mush in your mouth.
At 6-8 weeks, you move gradually into firmer and firmer foods. Raw veggies are one of the last things you add.. especially raw carrots, cucumbers with peels, etc. It might take longer than 8 weeks to bring some of that back in.
I knew it was ok to advance to the next stage when I could eat the current stage relatively quickly and without discomfort. Anytime you try out a new food, just take a small bite, chew it well, swallow, and wait to see if everything is ok, before taking the next bite. Your tummy will tell you when it doesn't like things.
If you overdo, and end up vomiting, go back to liquids for a day to rest your tummy. Wait at least a week before reintroducing something that didn't agree with you.

Thank you sooo much. I am starting this today. Heading back to the grocery store! I really appreciate the advice!
