Hello everyone , I am AA women living in Midwest . I'm having my sergury at NW w Dr Nagle.
I met with the ANP today and found out the process takes 6 months and I will only loss 60% of my weight which is 60lbs .Yup ????I was hoping for at least 80 -100 lbs she said with diet and exercise I can lose more weight.
I'm 54yrs old weigh 260 lbs I have Hypothyroidism , Back pain. But to go though all of this and only get down to 200lbs , I don't know , it's seems like it's not worth it. I m not going to give up. So am going to try and lose a little weight before my sergury , I have 5 month so hopefully I can lose 10-15lbs . lbs. I am very unhappy with my body I carry most of weight in my breast , stomach and arms .
    I wont be discourage .
    Take care .

Following this thread as I'm in a similar situation. I was set on sleeve as well and my Dr just diagnosed me with Barrett's syndrome and recommend that I consider RnY. Also looking to loose 100lbs.

cyndi990 reacted to TwinMama in 17 years post-op & WTF??
    WTF??
I am 38, had my open RNY GB Surgery 17 years ago....... As far as I can tell, my results have been textbook: Maintained 160-70 lb loss (172 lbs 2day), 2 successful pregnancies (my 2nd w/Twins), retired HS Teacher/SAHMom, awesome marriage, comfortable lifestyle, etc...
BUT..... It feels like all the CRAP keeps coming back to me!!
I watch shows like TLC's, "My 600-lb Life," and feel my "Fat brain" return - it's STILL in there!!!!! Those same thoughts/feelings that occupied the first 20 years of my life flash right before my eyes - Can't seem to escape them!!
Interestingly enough, this very personal predicament leaves me w/questions directed towards OTHER people:
    1) Does anyone else out there post-op feel like this?
    2) Can my quite involved WLS experience help anyone pre-op?
Any clues?? Plz lemme know....... Thanx!!

When I had my pre-surgical endoscopy they discovered I had Barrett's. My bari sugeon did NOT want to sleeve me, but wanted to do the RNY. I called my gastroenterologist and we had a LONG talk. He told me that the issue with Barrett's isn't reflux, it's ACID, and he would be putting me on an acid reducer every day for the rest of my life. He said he would prefer I have NO surgery, but understood why it was necessary. He said he has many, many patients with severe complications from RNY, but NONE from the sleeve. He said that so many things would have to happen before my Barrett's turned to cancer, and we would be monitoring it closely, and he didn't think I should overly worry about it.
I asked him point blank if I got cancer if the sleeve would preclude treatment, and he said no. After talking, I felt very comfortable about getting the sleeve. However, I hooked my bari surgeon and gastro up so they could talk it out. Afterwards, my bariatric surgeon agreed I could get the sleeve, but told me that if acid was a huge problem I'd have to revert to the RNY in a later surgery.
Right after the surgery, I had a lot of acid. Now, I have days when it seems worse, but overall I'm feeling pretty good. I also had a hiatal hernia repair, and I think that took care of some of it.
I know this is a really tough decision, and I think it depends a lot on how advanced your Barrett's is. But don't hesitate to seek a second opinion, and don't rush into this surgery if a little more time would improve the Barrett's. I'm supposed to have an endoscopy this summer to see how it looks 1 year out (from my last one--not surgery). I will add this... after having had one surgery, the thought of ever having to go through a second procedure makes me shudder. So, if there's a really huge possibility you might have to do that (have the sleeve then later the RNY), you might want to decide to go with the RNY right from the start. I love my sleeve, though, and so far, have no regrets.

I didn't read all the replies, so I apologize if you have to repeat yourself. Did you complete the requirements that were given in 2016? If so, then this is ridiculous. They should not deny you for a procedure if you already met the requirements in 2016. If this is the case, then it seems to me as if they're deliberately trying to sabotage your chances of having this surgery. My surgeon said that people, who are severely overweight, truly don't need the once-a-month check-ups and other requirements (excluding the cardiac clearance). He said that insurance companies require people to go through all these requirements, in hopes that they will give up and not go through with the surgery; because they don't want to pay for it.

I could be completely wrong about all of this; it's just an opinion.

If I were you, I would appeal this ASAP.

I also have BCBS Fed. At first, the requirements were: 4 months of a doctor-monitored diet (having check-ups once a month), a cardiac clearance, a nutrition class, a sleep disorder test, a psych eval, and a clearance letter written by my doctor. I told my surgeon that I have Pseudotumor cerebri. This worried him, so he had a conference with BCBS. They approved me in 8 days (I did not have to complete all the requirements they previously gave me.) All I needed to do was send in paperwork proving 3 years of having a BMI over 40, take a nutrition class, and get the cardiac clearance. I had my surgery a month later, and I am now 5 months post-op.

My paperwork was submitted December 21, 2016 for approval. Jan 3rd 2017 I called and found out I was denied, because I don't meet the New guidelines for 2017. I am really upset about it ????.
I don't think it's fair. Now I need 2yrs bmi >35 w co mobilities 40> w out co mobilities. 90 days NUT , psych eval. I have NUT class and psych eval but I need 1full year with BMI >40.
Has this ever happened to anyone.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I also have FEP BCBS. I was sleeved on December 14 2016. I, too had to have all of the requirements you mentioned. I also know someone else who was sleeved earlier in the year with the same insurance, and he also had those requirements. I really hope the peer to peer helps you out! Good luck!

You know, I just have to say this....I don't understand insurance companies. Doctors and insurance companies are so quick to say that our health problems are due to being overweight, but the insurance companies refuse to pay for anything weight related. Can't they see that if we weren't so overweight, that we wouldn't have as many health problems, thus they would save money?? I just can't understand how they haven't come to this conclusion yet. UGH!! I had to pay for my surgery out of pocket. They won't cover anything weight related at all. So ridiculous.

Wow! I'm very ignorant about WLS approvals (though very familiar with dealing with health insurance for long-term disabilities) so forgive me for speculating but it seems strange they would hold an application submitted in 2016 to standards that were not in effect until 2017. Maybe they held onto it so they could deny it for that reason... or maybe I am just skeptical of insco's! I hope you get a good result from the P2P with your doctor.

I was approved by BCBS Fed in 2016. I was required to show 2 years of BMI history. I didn't think the policy changed at all from 2016 to 2017. If was submitted DEc. 21 - they should have processed it in 2016.
