Blunt but still not judgmental: No, I didn't "cheat" on my pre or post op diet. I'd suggest you check with your surgeon before you (insert request for validation). Around these parts judgmental seems to equal disagreeing. Having a different point of view or opinion doesn't make one a monster. True story.

So I freaked out a little bit last night.
On Tuesday, I met with my Case Manager, was weighted at 5 pounds below goal weight, and set a date for my surgery on Nov. 30.
Yesterday, I started the process at work of prepping for my absence. Put my medical leave on everyone's calendars, starting setting meetings with my direct reports so they are set for success while I'm gone, started figuring out how I'm getting to and from the hospital (I live by myself, and while my sister is coming to the hospital with me, she doesn't drive so I have to figure out how to get to the hospital, get her back to my apartment from the hospital, and then get me home from the hospital when I'm done with my stay a day or two later since I can't drive myself).
For the first time last night it seemed like it was really happening and I started to get some anxiety for the first time. Until now it's all been academic but last night for the first time it seemed very real. And what do I do when I feel emotions that I'm uncomfortable with. I eat stuff I shouldn't.
I didn't go on a full binge, but I definitely did the late night, head hunger, keep looking in the fridge and picking at the leftovers thing.
How have folks with experience dealt with the tendency to self sabotage? At this point, the only thing to keep me from having the surgery would be if I show up on the day of over my goal weight. I'm trying to be mindful and stay on target, but I still have a few weeks and don't want to screw myself over.

Perhaps I'm missing the "anger and vitriol"? I think it really all depends on one's level of sensitivity. I'm personally not really one to get offended by a stranger's words on the internet, especially if and when I've specifically asked for opinions.
We all hear, speak and interpret differently. I'm not suggesting that there is only black and white at all. I'm merely suggesting that some people only see it that way (especially if they don't like what they're hearing) and there's not a whole lot **I** can do about it.
Some people respond really well to me, some don't. In turn, I don't respond well at all to those are overly warm and fuzzy. Again, we can't be everything to everybody.
Take what you can use and leave the rest.

Helping someone justify potato chips at five weeks out, Swedish fish at five days out, alcohol at three days out, etc. is not **MY** idea of compassion or kindness. It doesn't help them and it especially doesn't help others reading, researching, absorbing.
People choose to be be offended or read comments as judgmental around these parts when their bad choices are not coddled, high fived and justified. From me, judgement is not at all intended 99% of the time (true story!) but clearly I am NEVER going to be a warm and fuzzy person so some choose to read it that way.
Everyone has a different interpretation of support and we will never all agree in that RIGHT definition. Some like it soft and coddling, others like it straight forward and to the point. It's the internet. Take what you need and ignore the rest.

I guess what I'm trying to understand is why there's so much anger and vitriol instead of compassion and more understanding. None of us get to a place where we need surgery because we've made good choices or had 100% transparency or honesty with ourselves or with others. Sometimes there are issues that run a lot deeper with some folks than others. You just never know a person's background or story.
I also know from my own past (I'm almost nine years out) and many of my friends in the WLS community we all had experiences where when we first had surgery and were doing remarkably well, we felt invincible and full of conviction and top of the world with our choices and actions. It's easy to get to a place of high-ground when you feel that way, which is why I think it's important to remember that it doesn't always stay that way. There are always going to be times when you question others actions, and that's normal and fine. But remember, there are probably others doing the same to you. Extend the same kindness you'd want for yourself.

Being judgemental with each other NEVER helps. Support is not judgemental. Support is support. You're there through the good times and the bad listening, lending an ear, giving the best advice you can through a supportive and encouraging lens that won't further damage someone(s) already struggling.

I think accountability is key to not only weight loss success but all addictions. As they say, You can make excuses or you can make progress, your choice.
Two weeks after surgery I wrote myself a letter admitting my terrible relationship with food. If you don't admit what gets you into bad situations, you are bound to repeat. I think the only way to get rid of demons is to admit they are there, and confront them.
When I read here about people who just ate candy or fried food, etc, I think that they have not yet faced the hardest part of this journey.. mental changes. Like Blizair said "Bless their Hearts".

I was denied and had all my doctors give me a Medical necessity letter. I sent them in to my insurance company after Bariatrics put in an appeal. I followed up with phone calls and finally got approved. I think taking it on myself and being polite and persistent helped. Good luck. Sent from my VS986 using the BariatricPal App

    @@surfhudson,
I don’t think there is anything wrong with snacking as long as you count it towards your daily totals and make up for it by having smaller meals. I mean, if you’re going to have 1,400 calories, for example, it doesn’t matter much whether you have three meals of 400, 500, and 500 calories, or three meals of 350 calories PLUS two Snacks each with 175 calories.
As for what to have…think Protein, then Fiber, and of course filling! I always like to think about easy Snacks, too, because I tend to grab whatever’s around. If nothing healthy is on hand, I am more likely to go for easy junk like chips.
You might start with a Protein, like hard-boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, low-fat string cheese, tuna, or Peanut Butter. Then think about adding some Fiber, usually from fruit or vegetables. Have cottage cheese with fruit or veggies, dip cucumbers in Greek yogurt, pair celery or apples with Peanut Butter, or dip carrots into hummus. Beans and soybeans make a nice two-fer – they have protein and fiber! You can have roasted chickpeas or soybeans, or have a half-cup of fat-free refried Beans or low-sodium canned beans.
For something sweet, you can always do low-sugar flavored yogurt, or a Protein Bar, or fruit with ricotta cheese or non-fat cream cheese.

I was sleeved 6 weeks ago and have been through some ups and downs. I too, was frusterated because I could hardly eat anything. I survived on Soups and soft foods for weeks, plus Protein shakes. I lost weight and was happy. Then I got tired of the soups and soft foods, but still kept going. Then I stalled and was constipated for days. Frusterated again. All of sudden I was vomiting the foamies when I ate...another disappointment, but I kept going.
I went out with friends last night and realized for the first time ever, I would never be able to eat a full meal again. Never. But that is ok with me, but I find myself making excuses for why I am not eating like I used to because I kept my surgery a secret.
In the end, I still think it is worth it...but there are definitely some adjustments along the way. I don't think the adjustments will ever go away....

It's the "easy way out", remember?

Nope. I don't think anyone can really be fully prepared because everyone's experience is different. Even those who have textbook recoveries can't know the impact of the restriction we feel after having a full capacity stomach. I am not saying that it's not totally easy (or totally hard) for some, but I can't imagine how one could be full AWARE of what exactly is about to happen.
This is why I am so amused at the pre-op people who give such "stern" or "educated" advice. What they read/heard/researched is NOTHING like the reality they are about to face in many cases, and certainly not in everyone's case.

I am 3.5 years out. I am successful. I know what to do and what not to do. FOR ME. I am not an expert on anyone BUT ME. And I suck at that at times, too.

@@laylalayla Do you have any blood thinners to take during the flight? How about compression stockings? It's a shame you're not getting the after care you need. In my first week post-op I was on Protein Shakes and liquids (water, Powerade Zero, Decaf tea, broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles. I could take my regular meds as long as they weren't long acting or capsules. Tablets had to be smaller than an M&M. No NSAIDS. Be sure to get in at least 64ozs of fluids. Good luck!

Huh... sounds like my wife has it lucky. I do all of the bill paying (online or in person), I do the grocery shopping, the outside chores, I clean the bathroom, living room, hallway, office, & living room, vacuuming and dusting. She does the laundry, cooking, and dishes not because I won't but because I don't do them "right". I prefer towels folded and she rolls them, etc...
When my wife was out of commission I had no problem cooking for the kids, they just had to eat what I made. I never asked them what sounded good. And there was none of that, "If you don't like it, find something you want." crap. I say "This is what we are having, don't like it? Starve."
Needless to say they like mom better in the kitchen!

What did you tell him about the weight you lost before surgery if you did lose weight?
Because he's not seeing the really weird liquid-puree phase, you can delay telling him about surgery. When he notices the small amounts of food in the Goldilocks bowl, tell him that you want to lose weight. When he notices the rapid rate of loss, talk about surgery or wait for him to ask. If you don't tell him, he'll either think surgery or that you're seriously ill. By then your entire circle will have noticed that something is going on. People talk, but not always for the sake of idle gossip. You don't have to tell the whole group, but when someone is living under the same roof, it's probably more trouble to stay silent than to open up. As to your friend/his girlfriend, I dunno. Maybe tell them together and add that you're doing so out of respect for their relationship, but that you'd rather it go no farther. Now and then we just have to trust in the people we've chosen for our lives.

When you do have the surgery you will need to be patient with dietary phases, the sporadic weight loss and emotional challenges. Being in this forum is very helpful especially scrolling through the before and afters. It helps me keep my eye on the prize. Good luck
