  1. Officially no longer over weight! Goal #1 reached! I'm now under 80kgs (176 lbs) at 179cm (5'10") and 10 months post-op and am over the moon. My weight at 79.9 kgs (176 lbs) gives me a BMI of 24.9 which means that I have a normal weight! OMG.

I still want to lose about 16 lbs more though in order to get safely into the middle range to insure against that little regain that happens. The I have maintenence in front of me as well.

BUT I have hit my first goal. Yeah me!!!

      biginjapan

Fantastic! That's such a great goal to reach and one I hope to get to this year as well.

  2. Did my weekly weigh in this morning and am a little disappointed that the scale has not budged since last week. However, I am focusing on the fact that I'm sticking to my plan and that I can see that I'm losing weight, not only in my face, but in how my clothes fit. Guess I'll be using the quarantine to do a big purge in my closet!

That's why I'm trying to only weigh myself once a week. And not to compare my weight loss to others who seem to be doing much better. I have to remember that revision surgery is usually not as successful (in terms of overall weight loss) than surgeries done the first time around.

  3. Today I finally hit 100 pounds lost since my highest weight! I'm pretty stoked, and hoping I can get to goal weight by the time of my one-year surgiversary.

Thanks! Only another 22 pounds to have lost 100 since surgery, and 22 past that I will have finally hit goal. Not sure how long it will take - I find myself very tempted by warm, thick, savory or sweet foods and drinks (often hot) that are appearing now that the weather is getting cooler. Will definitely have to find substitutes to keep me satisfied and on track over the winter months!

  4. I'm going to France in the next few months to have surgery. I'm undecided on whether to go for a Lap band or a Mini gastric bypass. Could I please get some advice on both - recovery times, loses, long term weight loss etc.

    Thanks

      biginjapan

      Hi Jodie,

I would suggest you ask this in the main forums, rather than as a status update - you'll probably get a lot more answers. Personally, I have not heard anything good about a lap band (in fact, many surgeons refuse to do them anymore) so you may want to look into that. I had a gastric sleeve and have had no regrets!

  5. HAPPY 39th BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! :D

Yep, today's my birthday and I'll scream it out loud for all the world to hear.  Why?  Not for birthday wishes, but because of the birthdays I had growing up weren't really celebrated too much.  When I became an adult, I would always be depressed on this day.  I had enough of it two years ago and had a revelation (thanks to my brother) and decided that from now on, I will celebrate my birthday and be happy on this day. I believe that this is the day that God has made and He and all His angels are rejoicing because I was made!!! I won't be sad anymore.  Sure, things come up, like today my four year old had the biggest epic fit over a pair of pants (and at school--the first ever) and also today, I'm missing work because I'm not feeling well, and have to go see the doctor as well.  I even weighed myself to see if I made it to onderland, but that didn't happen either.  But despite the negative stuff, I am well, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY AND I WILL BE HAPPY.

@Newme17 I'm doing good I guess. Haven't been so good with food (not that I'm eating badly, I've just added things that probably aren't helping me much) so weight loss has been stalled for the last month (but at least I'm not gaining). I was busy travelling and then getting ready to head back to school. Now that things are back into a routine, I hope to get back on track (that includes being here more regularly too!).

  7. Six months post-op and 90 pounds lost! I'm so happy with the weight loss, but I still can't help wishing it was 100 pounds instead. ;) I still need to find time to do my measurements and take some photos though - I'm leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow morning, so am pretty busy cleaning and packing before I go.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Thanks everyone! I really am happy as I've never lost 90 pounds in one go before.

@Newme17: Hong Kong is just for a few days as a layover on my way home. I have 2 suitcases full of clothes that I am bringing back with me to give away or sell (I still have 5 more boxes of clothes though! - too bad I couldn't bring them all with me)

  8. This is a first!

I just got back from a 3 week vacation and I lost 5.5 lbs. I don't think I have ever lost weight while on vacation.

I eat more carbs than I usually do, I was less active than I usually am, and I didn't track what I eat, just made sure I got enough protein.

Today it's back to business, tracking and eating clean. Sunday it was 5 months since I started my 2 week pre-op diet, and I'm down over 78 lbs. A few years ago it took me a whole year of diet and working out 6 days a week to drop 67 lbs. Insane.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

FWIW, this has happened to me too, both times I went on vacation (well, business trips to be honest) since my surgery - one was a 10-day trip to Germany, the other a 2-day weekend in another city. Both times I dropped weight even though my food intake was not as stellar as it should have been. Which makes me think that maybe the body likes change - change of food, change of exercise, etc. and responds more eagerly as a result. Just a thought.

  9. Can anything happen when your on your post op diet after the sleeve surgery and you eat cream soup  ? Can it stretch out your sleeve ? Besides it beings uncomfortable I'm a little concerned.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

You can't stretch your stomach post-op - there's a lot of information on the internet, YouTube, and this site that supports that idea. You can learn to eat around your smaller stomach. Right now you are on liquids, so they go down easier and faster than solid food does. If you have too much, you'll feel uncomfortable. If you don't want to get to that stage, measure out your food and eat only that, even if you think you can eat more. You have to retrain yourself to be satisfied with much less.

  10. Sooo...I decided to keep a pair of brand new dress pants that I've never worn from the past two years (that I could also never wear due to them being way too small) for when I need a pair to wear. I decided to try them on this morning (for an important appointment this week) and they are now too big! Lol. :P

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

I've had this "problem" as well - one week (or so it seems) the small pants are too small, and then when I try them on again they're too big! Unfortunately now I do not have a single pair of pants that fit me - the smaller 16s are just that little bit too tight (like, if I bend over, either they, or I, will split) to wear at all. So now I'm stuck with one skirt (luckily it's a jean skirt, so it's pretty sturdy) for the next week until I get to Hong Kong where maybe I can find something that fits me!

  11. I've got the dreaded "turkey neck" thighs!

    :o

Seriously, I was applying some BodyGlide anti-chafing stick to my inner thighs this morning, and I guess its the first time I really looked down there in a while, because I was shocked to discover that the backs of both my inner thighs literally look like a turkey neck! I was so shocked! As I've been losing weight, I of course have some loose skin, but nothing really bad (or so I thought). Thankfully I won't be wearing shorts or a swimsuit for some time yet....

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Thanks! I know it looks bad now, and will probably get worse as time goes by, but I'm hoping there will be some bounce back. However, I am VERY bottom-heavy, have always had huge thighs, so I guess this should not be unexpected.

  12. Did anyone start questioning surgery after having success with the preop diet?  Having success with the preop is making me wonder if I should just continue with the diet and a trainer and don't know if  this is just normal ad I should just go ahead with my date or if this is the little voice we are told to listen to.  Help

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

I lost more weight pre-op (22 pounds in 3 weeks) than in any month post-op (the highest was 18 pounds in a month). But did I ever second-guess my decision to self-pay for my surgery? Absolutely not. Anyone can lose weight. The problem I think almost everyone here has is that it's almost impossible to keep off - the body fights back to get back to where it was. You get the dreaded plateau and start to gain again. In 6 months post-op the scale has only gone down for me (like a series of steps - holds steady for a week or two, then just drops). That has never happened in 20+ years of trying to lose weight. Think of the surgery as a reset button for your body - it gives you a fresh start, instead of the enormous handicap (metabolic set-point, possible insulin and leptin resistance, etc) that you will be dealing with if you don't have the surgery.

  13. My clothes have been hanging off and baggy. I decided to just suck it up and buy a few shirts and two pairs of jeans today. I fit into a size 16 jeans. I was a size 22!!! I fit into a size Medium shirt. A MEDIUM!!! From a 2XL - 3XL to Medium. OMG!!! YES.

  14. Tomorrow marks 4 weeks and this week the scale hasn't moved. Only 18lbs down. Is this normal?

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Actually, eating less does not always mean losing weight. If your calories are too low, it could be stalling you. Are you really not eating anything? I was on soft foods by the 4-week mark.

Yes. I lost 15 pounds my first month post-op and that's been my biggest loss so far. Everyone is different, depending on surgery done, starting BMI, gender, and so many other issues.

  16. Day 6 of a 2 week clear liquid diet...this sucks so bad!!  :47_tired_face:   I'm so frustrated and angry and FRUSTRATED!!  I am so hungry and want to eat so bad!  I can have sugar free jello, popsicles and Crystal Light but the artificial sweeteners are just so bad!  I keep telling myself I'm almost half done but honestly it's not helping much.  This better be freaking worth it...👿

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Have you tried other things like mint tea (cold or hot, both ways are really good), or strained miso soup (if allowed)? I have a hard time with artificial sweeteners as well (especially in jello) and found it great to be able to drink savoury things like miso soup. Also, mint tea is not sweet in any way, but when cold it is really refreshing.

  17. Does anyone purposely go to bed hungry or do you eat if you're hungry right at bedtime? I've always ignored the hunger and went to bed. It's not acid reflux (haven't had any, praise God!), but real genuine hunger. I could eat anything right now. In the past (healthy days), I learned to just go to bed, something to do with making the metabolism work/calories burn, etc. don't remember exact science. Also in the past (non healthy days) I thought I'd be hungry and would end up eating a snack before bed. But that was refux.  So even though I'm genuinely hungry now. I wouldn't even want to start up that terrible old habit I had. I think I posted my status out of even thinking of getting something to eat, even if it's healthy.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Actually, I've noticed that I've been starting to snack before bedtime - a bad habit that happens out of boredom? I don't know. I really want to kick this habit but I'm not sure how, other than drinking some water and maybe doing something else (reading, going to bed) to keep my mind off things. I'm not really hungry, I think it's "ghost" hunger reminding me of what I used to do. Luckily summer holidays are coming up so I'm hoping that will help me shake up some of the bad habits I've been redeveloping.

  18. So, I tried to save some money by working out at home and realize that I am not determined enough to do it.  I work out, but not nearly as much as I should be.  Doc wants me to do at least 3x a week, and I've been skimping.  My husband noticed too and asked me if I had thought to go back to the gym.  This is unlike me really.  I love to workout...just not at home, apparently.  I really did try though. So, back to the gym today.  I'll have to sign back up again.  That is my element of working out.  I'll take a monthly fee and stronger, better health, than trying to save that bit and slacking.

Thanks @Newme17! I usually wake up at 4:30 every morning (well, weekdays), so it makes more sense for me to do it then, rather than in the evening when I am tired and spent after a 12-hour day at work.

That's funny - I just came to that realisation as well! I did some research last night and found out that Gold's Gym here in Japan is now open 24 hours - which means I can go in for early morning workouts before work! I'm so excited, but I won't join until September as I'll be away for most of August.

  20. Yes, I'm still up...9:18. Trying to stay up for a few more mins. I am here in bed, lights off, thinking about how "all of a sudden" my body is aching the way it did with 25+ lbs on it. Is there such a thing as a period after weight loss when all the previous aches and pains decide to come back and wreak havoc? Hip bursitis has flared up pretty bad. My other hip is achy. I felt like my collar bone was about to snap with a piercing pain earlier. All I did was lift up the clothes hamper. My knees are aching an awful lot. Usually happens with bad weather coming but there's nothing in he forecast that I know of. Of course my shoulder that was injured in an accident few months back hurts. My feet hurt again, they haven't for a while and now they do???

All I know is that I'm WAY TOO YOUNG for these issues. Please tell me something gets better!?!? Almost feels like I'm going backwards.

Now, I know I need to stay positive and work through these things. I think my lack of sleep is coming out with the complaints and not so positive attitude right now. My poor kids felt the mom-not-herself attitude earlier. I'm made it to 9:25. I think I'm calling it quits. Goodnight y'all.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

      @Newme17 - I so feel for you!

I haven't had anything "old" flare-up, but I have noticed that various bits of my body get creaky and cranky for short periods of time (up to a week) and then it kind of disappears. However, I have had a long history of bad backs (herniated disc), bad feet (plantar fasciitis and now it appears that I have heel spurs (no more fat padding!)), and perennially bad knees. As I result, every time I try to "step it up" to increased my activity, something always happens that sets me back worse than I was before I started, and for much longer. Now, luckily the weight is not so much the issue, but I do know that after turning 35, and especially after turning 40, things begin to go rapidly down hill! (at least they did for me). So I'm taking the activity part of my weight loss slowly - lots of walking, hills and stairs are okay, but nothing even remotely high impact or overly strenuous (although I'm now at the point where I do think it would be safe to go a bit harder). I also have to find some lighter weights to use, because the ones I currently have at home (which in the past seemed too light for me) are now too heavy and may cause injury if I continue to use them for weight training (I've been using the video on YouTube you suggested a while back). So...that's a long story but basically I think you are doing the right thing by taking a step back for a little while. We have to learn to listen to cues from our bodies, and remember that changes take time.

  21. So I used to do Pilates and loved the feeling of being stretched and limber afterwards. I decided to do a quick Pilates video and the first move was to lay down on the floor on your back and pull up your legs at a 90 degree angle. Easy enough right? Not when it feels like your tailbone is sitting on top of a metal rod!!!! I couldn't lay down properly. So I tried the next move, lay on your side to lift your top leg up and forward. OUCH! It hurt my hip bone!!! Then I rolled over to the other side to check, felt the same. Am I destined to get my stretches one standing up? Hurts way too much to be laying on my bones, they feel bruised and/or like I said, laying on a metal rod. Anyone else have this happen to them? Maybe it's weight loss? Maybe it's my age? I don't know!

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

It might be the weight loss - I can't sit on anything hard for more than 5 minutes without my legs going numb and/or hurting my tailbone. Even though I still have some padding I feel like a lumpy pillow - the "padding" just moves out of the way when you put anything on it!

  22. So I've been trying to wake up early and get my workouts in, only did it twice.  I can't seem to shake off my tiredness in the mornings!  I know if I kept it up, I'd make it into a habit and it'll get easier, but I don't know if I want to do that.  When I workout in the evenings, take my shower, I'm so ready to lay down and sleep.  I think I'll stick to my evenings.

Now, if I decided to stop working, then I'll do mornings...around 9 or 10.  LOL

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

I wish I could work out in the evenings - if I do I get way too keyed up and it takes a long time for me to fall asleep afterwards. Unfortunately, most days I have no time in the mornings either...;)

  23. FITBIT tracker has changed my life. I can't believe how competitive I have become with my exercise. I have this overwhelming urge to beat this piece of plastic on my wrist each and every day. I love it when it sends me a message saying I'm an 'overachiever' when I beat my daily goals. I also got a 'milestone badge' last week saying I have walked 402kms which is the equivalent of walking the entire London Underground circuit! I've done another 60kgs since then and feeling great. Can't believe that 3 months ago just walking up stairs half killed me!

happy to explain what the FITBIT does if you have any questions.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

I love my fitbit as well! It keeps me honest, and I know that I haven't had enough exercise in a day if I'm not close to 10,000 steps. Plus, like you, I have to hit my milestones everyday! I might make them a little more challenging to get me moving more.

  24. So...officially I'm still obese (BMI 35) but I certainly don't feel like I am. I feel so much better (and smaller) at this current weight than I did the last time I was here (albeit gaining then). Just need to get that pesky scale moving a little more!

  25. Yesterday was my last Omeprazole pill.  Today I start my journey believing that acid reflux/heartburn isn't for me.  Certain types of food always brought it on before.  If I stay away, I should be fine.  Besides, I'm claiming it isn't for me.

So i decided to eat some diced peaches.  Totally forgot the one I have is sugar free and it's the worst tasting peaches I've ever had.  Took it to the trash.  NASTY!!!  Should have brought a fresh peach instead.

    Oatmeal it'll be.....

I finished my bottle of Omeprazole back at the end of May (I was not given instructions on how long to take it, so just finished the bottle). I haven't had any issues since. I'm sure you'll be fine too!
