rosestara got a reaction from NettyD in It's not always easy to put yourself out there...
sure I will support you. I went to my seminar a few weeks ago and have my first appointment with my surgeon next tuesday. My insurance requires the 6 month thing so hopefully I will get my surgery in December before the New Year. I have also done an insane amount of research. Right now I am totally addicted to youtube videos and following people's journeys. I'm trying to decide if I have the courage to post on youtube or not. I am 44 and I also don't have any kids but that is because I had to have a hysterectomy at 35 so didn't get a chance. I have two small dogs and their names are Allegra and Lunesta because I am a pharmacist.
I am headed out the door right now to go to dinner and tell a good friend about my surgery. I am almost positive she will be supportive. Wish me luck!

rosestara got a reaction from imadethelist in The Biggest Loser and Regain: Share Tips and Self-Reflection
I have to say that I am a big fan of the show. I have watched every season from the very first year that it aired. What I love about the show is how it showed me that I could do things that I thought I couldn't do. Watching overweight people exercise at the level they exercise and run was a great motivation to me. I am almost 300 pounds and several times I have lost a lot of weight using the biggest loser as my motivation. I did regain the weight which was my fault. I would always go back to my old habits. I don't pay attention to their fast weight loss, I focus on the overall mental transformation that they make. Although a lot of them regain the weight, I think on average they are more successful than the average American is at keeping off the weight. I keep track of a lot of them on Facebook and I have attended some of the biggest loser mud runs and 5k's so I have also met some of them in person so I know quite a lot of them kept the weight off. Just from watching the show, I have worked out with a personal trainer many times and I trained to be able to run a mile at 250 pounds when I never thought I could run for even 1 minute. A few years ago I walked a half marathon and my other overweight friends thought it was impossible. I did all those things because I saw fat people on tv do the same things and more. The show has been one of the reasons that I even tried to lose weight in the past instead of just giving up. It is tv so I know it is unrealistic for real people to work out 6 to 8 hours a day but they did motivate me to get off the couch and just workout for even 15 minutes a day. I just wanted to say something positive about the show. We are all trying our best.

    rosestara got a reaction from minervaxx6 in 5 Days Post-Op & I'm Starving!
I am now 20 days post op and for the first 2 weeks I was hungry all the time. I would wake up feeling like I was starving to death. It was real hunger and not head hunger and it didn't go away by drinking. Actually I never felt full even once during my first 2 weeks. Then I moved to puree foods and now I feel much better. I still get hungry but it is natural hunger. I now wake up feeling fine and eat Breakfast then I get hungry a few hours later when it is time for the next meal. I also now get very full on puree food but it doesn't last for a long time unless I eat too much.

These two people have very different lives, the one on the left hated Mondays because he had to go to work and didn't feel well because he only had 3 hours of sleep due to the fact his sleep apnea tried to kill him every night. The one on the right cannot wait to wake up after a great night sleep, to get to the gym and sculpt his guns.

Today I am 1wk post-op from my sleeve surgery! Most of the chest pressure from when I drink is gone, thankfully! My bowels are working and I'm not nauseous! Praise the Lord for all these things! My stomach muscles are on the mend but still a bit sore when bending over or getting up. I have lots of bruising on my tummy. Other than that I'm able to do my protien drinks, Soups, sf Jello, sf popsicles, greek yogurt & cream of wheat. My first week I lost 6.5lbs! Yaya!

So my journey started this past March and I was at my highest weight of 315. I was sleeved on 12/14/16, and I weighed 298 at that point. This morning I weighed 268.4! Down 29.4 pounds in a month! I am thrilled, but more importantly, I was able to do without a belt extender on my recent flight. I am wearing clothes from my closet that were too tight before, and I have a ton more energy. I am so glad that I made the decision to have the surgery.

I had mine Jan 4 and have been very thankful for no nausea or vomiting. I did have terrible gas pains for a few days but I do have a slight fear of vomiting which I was very nervous about. Can't complain.

I have to agree with the poster who said his only regret was not getting the surgery sooner. I feel it's the best thing I have ever done for myself. Before surgery, dieted on and off my entire life. Lost some, gained more back, lost some again, repeat. For the first time in my life, food is really not an issue for me. Can I eat the same way I did before surgery? No. But I don't want to. I no longer crave carbs or sweets. I also cancelled my surgery several times over the years after reading horror stories about others who took the plunge, but finally went ahead with it two years ago. It's rough in the beginning, but totally worth it.

I haven't had my surgery yet so you can discount my opinion if you want to. I am getting this surgery not because I can't lose weight, but because I can't keep it off once I lose it. It's awesome that you've lost 25 pounds, but your chances of keeping it off for 5 years is somewhere between 2-4% without surgery. Bariatric surgery gives the best chance available today to keep the weight off long term because it's the only thing that resets your body's weight set point to a lower level giving you a better chance at keeping it off. Set point is the high weight your body will fight tooth and nail to get back to. It's why it's so hard to maintain weight loss otherwise. You can still gain the weight back if you don't change your habits around food and exercise, but at least you have a chance to keep it off. 2-4% is no chance at all.

Everyone has already had great replies to this topic but I will tell my experience since my surgery was just on Wednesday. I had minor pain and no gas pain at all. They only had me on iv pain meds for the first 8 hours or so. After that they wanted me to use liquid for pain. I did that it was fine. Now I am home and I have a small amount of pain but it is very manageable. For me, everything was easier and less pain than I expected. But that is just my experience.

rosestara reacted to Frenchie1977 in Complications from advancing diet too soon
So I just read yet another post about someone advancing their diet on their own too soon. This one from someone 4 days post op advancing to broccoli Soup. Probably won't kill them but it could. Then of course we get the irresponsible follow up poster saying that they too advanced their diet on their own way early and explored all kinds of foods and as long as their stomach tolerates it they see no problem with it.
Now I'm getting super frustrated, I had to put my two cents in. And perhaps I was harsh. But I watched someone die 4 years ago from doing just this.
My x mother in law had gastric sleeve surgery. At less than two weeks post op she started eating tidbits of foods she was not supposed to have, turkey, stuffing, ham, chicken in very small bites and yes chewed very well. All that didn't matter. She was fine at first. In fact showed no symptoms for days. Then she became extremely ill, with pain and fever. She had a leak which had to be repaired by surgery. After surgery she developed a serious infection and a fistula which led to the outside of her stomach. Everything she tried to drink seeped outside her stomach onto a large padded napkin that she held up to the opening of that fistula. They could not get the infection under control. They fought it for three months with the best antibiotics they had. Eventually she became septic, her organs began to fail and she passed away.
I am only 4 weeks post op VSG, you better believe I thought long and hard about having the same surgery that she had. But I can also say that I have followed my an to the T, with the exception of drinking coffee which I discussed with my surgeon beforehand.
When are people going to realize that following their diet is serious. And more so when are these idiots going to stop coming on and saying things like it's ok to explore foods early as long as you tolerate them!!!! My mother in law tolerated those foods just fine for damn near a week before she finally showed the signs of a serious leak.
Your prescribed diet plan after major stomach surgery is not just a guideline that they want you to follow so you can lose weight. It's a prescription that really can mean life or death, I've seen it with my own eyes.
    Ugggggh sooooooo frustrated!!!!!!!

My surgery is Jan 4th 2017 and I read all the scary things that you did but the other thing I saw was that almost everyone that had complications said they would still do the surgery all over again. Even one guy that had the worse complications I have ever heard of and took a year to recover still said he was glad he had the surgery. So that is what I asked myself. If I have one of the bad complications, do I still think it would be worth it if I reach my goal weight? For me the answer is yes because I am 45 years old and I have been overweight my entire life. I am willing to take the chance. You just have to make sure that for you, it is worth taking the chance and even with complications could you still be okay with having the surgery
