But the blockbuster is your admission (long suspected by me) that you read BP members' private messages. IMO reading members' private messages is a significant ethical violation by any message board operator. Those who choose to remain here need to understand that clearly.

I haven't been on this site in about six months. But after this latest idiocy, I'm finally ready to delete my account.
Yes, Alec, as the owner and operator of this message board you can do anything you want to do with this board.
However, your posts in this thread mischaracterize the ways in which this board's culture and the value it offers WLS patients have declined for some time.
But the blockbuster is your admission (long suspected by me) that you read BP members' private messages. IMO reading members' private messages is a significant ethical violation by any message board operator. Those who choose to remain here need to understand that clearly.
These days there are so many other social media options for support of WLS patients. I urge those leaving BP to explore them all.
I expect that my and some others' opinions will soon vanish when Alex heavily edits or deletes this thread, just as he has deleted other comments and BP threads where members have expressed their opinions about BP's culture and operational policies. But I've bothered to type them anyway.
In closing, I would like to thank the many WLS patients here who contributed to my WLS success (I've lost 100 pounds and have maintained my weight loss for longer than a year). I also thank those who invited my input and who appreciated the help I offered. Help is a two-way street.

I know you won't bother deleting my account, but I won't be here anymore. You remind me too much of the incoming "president," bullying people and taking choices away from them. If I felt safe here, I don't after reading this post of yours. I don't believe for one minutes that medical professionals (unless intimately associated with you) give a whit what happens here. You have banned the true sources of wisdom and allowed the petulant children to remain. I can only assume I haven't been banned because I'm still pre-op and therefore a potential customer of your store.
I hope know one sues you after they receive permission to eat pizza and drink beer in the recovery room and then rupture their sleeve, from the wonderful fount of knowledge that remains here.
You have permission to use nothing that you find in my profile or private messages.

Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was fiction. The idea for BP was excellent. That it's grown and is still operating is excellent and surprising; many home-grown sites last a while and disappear long before the 13-year mark. The rub is the naivete or disingenuousness -- I don't know which and prefer not to speculate -- that speaks of any place where everyone will feel safe. The world doesn't work that way least of all because there will always be those who will feel safe only if they crawl back into the womb.
I do not doubt that newcomers and the seasoned have expressed dismay. The truth, nevertheless, is that "you can't please all of the people all of the time." If it were possible, the phrase would not be enclosed by quotation marks. Unsubstantiated second- and third-hand reports from ASMBS members or other non-participants have no place in the discussion.
Have you really received reports of conspiracies conjured in private? I think it's likely because anyone can sign up for BP, including those with middle-school mentalities. How many take part in such cartels?
You wrote twice (one fell out of the quotation here) that a "tiny minority" of members have menaced more tender members and once that most members are supportive, sweet, helpful -- good scouts, shall we say. That's a most impressive record. It seems that there's nothing to complain about. You've described a website that mirrors the larger world. Not bad at all.

How do I disassociate with this forum? I should be able to delete my own account. I want nothing to do with this site and do not want my personal info available to anyone - especially you (clearly you have read Private Messages between others which is extremely inappropriate).

$o the whining snowflake$ whined to their $urgeons... it'$ clear that YOU did not review their post$ before you made your decision. I would bet money that at lea$t a few of the complainer$ are on my BLOCKED list.
Bariatric Pal is no longer a SAFE PLACE for me. I have been stalked by this gang of thin skinned snowflakes (you can check my list of BLOCKED members) who regularly pick fights and generally behave like deranged 7th graders. I do wonder how all those surgeons and psychologist and nutritionist (from your Mexican WLS center?) will react when someone keeps right on eating corn on the cob and ribs 3 days post op because some idiot on this site told them "don't worry, we all make mistakes" and there is no one here to speak up and call bullshit.
It makes sense that you will not delete our accounts, after all you don't want your membership numbers to drop. I will delete my own account. But I am serious that YOU need to stop sharing my email address with your cronies.

Please delete my account too. I left LapBandTalk many years ago when bullying got to be an issue and wasn't addressed. When I returned to the "new and improved" BariatricPal, I hoped I would find a source of information where intelligent adults could have an adult conversation.
I was wrong. BP has become a business-not a source of discussion and support.
The banning of several veterans, (without the courtesy of notifying them) is proof that you Alex have made a decision.
Better to create a "safe space" for individuals than a true open forum.
Have fun with your new world without experienced individuals willing to share a wealth of knowledge.
Wipe my account clean. I'm too old for this crap

A "safe place" for reckless idiots who consistently give each other bad advice....brilliant concept.
But if you where halfway honest with your self you would admit the obvious, the intention of this group is to funnel new customers into business run buy you and your friends.
Please remove me from this site and from all your lists as I am sick of the spam email that started right when I joined BP.

@@Alex Brecher **Unfortunately, this has not been the case recently. I have heard from multiple sources that some members are uncomfortable here. They feel attacked when they post. I have heard this not only from newbie and veteran members, but also from bariatric surgeons, nurses, and psychologists who are members of ASMBS and who have heard concerns about BariatricPal from their patients.**
What a bunch of CRAP, Alex. Let me tell you what *I* heard about BP from my surgeon, his nurses and my dietitian: that it's primarily pre-ops or new post-ops sharing bad information, with a store attached to it.
The funny thing? They were right. You banning people with no warning has taken away 2 of the reasons I bothered to keep coming here. I don't need more newbs crying because they need 'support' when they're eating ribs and corn on the cob 2 weeks post-op...my IRL support group is stuffed to the gills with them. I need the people with the guts to tell them it's a bad idea.

    Hi everyone,
My partner and I made it safely back to New Orleans late last night after three-and-a-half weeks in Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam). It was an amazing trip -- enlightening, exotic, beautiful -- but I am very happy to be back home.
I weighed on my own scale this morning for the first time since December 19. Preliminarily, I lost 13 pounds during this time. I say preliminary because I'll be curious to see what my weight is Monday or Tuesday after I settle back into my normal routine and lose some of the bloat from the long airplane ride and the sodium from the airplane food.
Here are some things I learned (or remembered) and experienced while I was gone:
    1. Changing my relationship with food is the key to this entire battle: This was the first time since my surgery that I had to come outside of my protective food bubble. While I took some Protein powder with me, it was used up pretty quickly, and once we left Singapore, there wasn't any appropriate powder available. String cheese wasn't readily available anywhere, and what they call cottage cheese over there is very different than ours. I had to work with what I could find and make it work within the parameters I set for myself. One time, we ate at a fried chicken place. I pulled the skin off and ate the chicken breast underneath. Many times, I had to get a stir fry concoction and then pick out the Protein and green vegetables and eat that. The point is, I was in less than ideal food situations, and I was able to successfully get the appropriate fuel I needed (and avoid undesirable food) because of my new relationship with food.
    2. A little bit of alcohol didn't cause me any problems: I gave up alcohol after the first month of my six-month pre-op diet and I abstained from it for almost nine months total. While I did not consume alcohol every day during our trip, I did have at least one glass of red wine on probably 75% of the days, and two nights (New Years Eve and the next-to-last night of the trip), I drank quite a bit. Even on the "heavy" drinking days, my carbs never went over 50, and my calories stayed nicely in check. Now that we are home, I am planning on alcohol being an every-now-and-then indulgence (meaning no more than once per week), and if there is going to be a night that we have some drinks, I'll use Protein Powder to get my protein needs and keep the calories down and in check. The point is, the alcohol didn't hamper me in any way and my stomach was fine with it (just like my NP said it would be).
    3. Exercise is important, but this journey -- right now at least -- is about consumption: We walked A LOT on this trip. I mean like 10-12 miles per day a lot. I was so proud that I could do it, and I was exhausted most days by the end of the day. And the walking probably did offset the alcohol I had, but all-in-all, my loss was along the lines it usually is. I will continue to exercise like I am supposed to, but this journey is still more about consumption at this point than it is any kind of exercise.
    4. I still can't do carbonated drinks -- even a sip or two: Pre-departure drinks in international first class usually are champagne and juice. On one of the flights, I got a glass of champagne and took a few sips to see how I would do with it. For a while, it was fine. I ate a little bit during the meal service, and a little while later, I thought I was going to have to throw up in the little bag. (The seatbelt light was on for an extended time and I couldn't get up.) While I didn't actually throw up, I kept having to spit up Water until I had this enormous (and loud) burp. Once that happened, I was instantly fine. As much as I miss Diet Coke, I can't have it or anything else carbonated. I'm envious of those on there who say that they can have it, but I am not going through that again.
    5. Food doesn't control my life any more: This trip was about the experience -- the culture, the people, the places. It was not about the food. That was the biggest victory for me. As we New Orleanians now Celebrate Carnival season for the next six weeks or so, I will approach the celebration in the same way. I am going to enjoy the season and be out and about proudly, but it isn't going to be about food, even if it is for others.
So now, I continue my journey. And I will proudly crawl back into my protective food bubble for a little while!
    Best to all!!
    Blair

@@anonmom There are several people with the same mental health conditions that have gotten surgery. The importance is that you are stable and cleared by a psychiatrist. I would call the program you went to and speak to a nurse manager or psychiatrist (if they have one) to find out if it's worth it to move forward with that practice. If they indicate this is a rule of the practice - find somewhere else. You may need extra therapy or support post-op - as this is as much mental as it is physical - but to automatically rule you out based on a diagnosis without knowing the status of the disease is not appropriate.

I honestly can't imagine you being able to do this without your husband's knowledge and need his help and support especially with young children. I believe it involves a hospital stay and about 7-10 recovery time - probably longer to lift. Good luck!
