becomingmandikaye got a reaction from Newme17 in Finally - my wls surgery podcast is live!
It's only a month late (sorry - life happens!), but I've finally gotten my podcast going!
In the first episode, I mostly just introduce myself and explain why I chose the sleeve.
Direct Link // iTunes // Stitcher
I'd love your feedback! And if you have suggestions for future topics, that would be awesome too! So far, I'm planning episodes on insurance, head hunger, what wls is and what it isn't, and a more in depth look at the different kinds of surgeries.

Alright you guys, I did it. I went and started a wls podcast from the perspective of the patient! It's called 30 Second Chew, and should be available most anywhere you choose to get your podcasts.
I am by no means an expert, only someone who wants to share my successes, my struggles, my fears, etc.
You can find my intro episode here: http://eloquentgushing.com/30-second-chew/episode-0-introducing-me/
I officially launch in April - and I'd love it if any of you had questions or comments/thoughts for me to share on the show!

becomingmandikaye got a reaction from ProudGrammy in Ok I have to ask...are things going too well? Am I overdoing it?
You will eventually feel fatigue from your body healing + lack of calories.
Keep in mind - people post about complications FAR more than they do feeling good. That's why you feel like that's all you've read.
I didn't feel quite as good as you, but I did end up feeling like my surgery was an anomaly because I had no complications, no pain, no vomiting, no Constipation, etc.

becomingmandikaye got a reaction from sweesee in Do you feel your docs prepared you for the post-op experience?
I was pretty thoroughly prepped as far as food goes, but not so much about the actual experience of being post-op. But I'd done so much reading here and elsewhere that I was pretty confident that I knew what to expect - and I was right. There have been no surprises or anything.

There are a couple that I frequent, but I try to stay away from the ones that are clearly pushing certain brands/products as they don't appear to be genuine. Some of the ones I like are:
Beauty and the Bypass - There are some good stories and motivation here. It's kind of "all over the place" meaning a bit unorganized, but you can find some inspiring stuff there. WLSHub - This one is quickly becoming a fave. Well organized, good resources like independent product reviews, news articles and GREAT recipes. Its still a 'young' site but it reads really well and doesn't seem to be aligned with any specific product/brand...and the recipes are great. The World According to Eggface - Most likely the most well-known. I really like the info, but unfortunately the site is so frustrating sometimes as it's just not well organized or easy to navigate. Great resources if you want to fish through everything to find them though. The ricotta bake saved me early post-op...no denying that! Other than those there really isn't a lot of "blog" style sites unfortunately. I think it's a difficult subject to advertise and perhaps people just simply don't have the time. For now, for me, WLSHub.com is about the closest to a 'blog' or news source that's out there and, even though it appears to be newer, it seems to add new content (especially recipes ) fairly regularly.
Aside from those, there are forums, which really is only this one and one called Thinner Times (this forum doesn't allow links to them...lol) that seems to be picking up quite a bit of traffic recently. Some good info on there, but not as robust as this one.

becomingmandikaye reacted to Alex Brecher in Please Read: Keep BariatricPal a Safe Place
I started the BariatricPal forums to create a safe place for everyone in the weight loss surgery community. It is for pre-op and post-op patients, for patients of all types of WLS, and for anyone who supports the WLS community. I want you to be able to come here for advice, encouragement, support, and information without worrying about being judged.
I have a zero-tolerance policy for rudeness, and you can see the guidelines in the Forum Rules.
Recently, there have been several instances of members being disrespectful or downright rude. Examples include:
Stating or implying that a poster is doomed to failure or not ready for WLS because he or she asked a certain question or is engaged in a certain behavior. Telling people that your way is the only way, and any other way means the member deserves WLS failure. Discriminating against “newbies,” such as letting a newbie know that you don’t think he or she will succeed, or asking only “vets” to reply to a certain thread. (Reminder: you can always choose not to follow the advice of someone you deem unqualified to give it). The vast majority of BariatricPal members do a phenomenal job making BariatricPal the warm, friendly community that I dreamed of when I started it. Thank you! Besides being sure to be polite and respectful, here are some additional ways to help.
If you see an offensive post, please consider the following.
You do not need to respond. Instead of giving a rude answer and escalating the situation, you can simply choose not to answer. You can report the post by clicking on the “Report” option under the post. A forum moderator will look into the situation and may delete the post or ban the member if the member continues to post inappropriately. You can send the member a private message explaining that you felt the post was inappropriate, and explaining why. In many cases, you may be surprised that the member did not even realize he or she was being rude. Please also think twice before you respond to any questions or other posts. It is possible that you could write a post that is genuinely meant to be helpful, but the person could accidentally interpret your post the wrong way. Try to remember that:
It is very difficult to communicate a specific tone in writing. You may write something that you think is helpful and understanding, while someone reading it might take it as bossy or judgmental. Emoticons such as smiley faces can help. You can also add a sentence to explain that you are only offering a suggestion or sharing your own experience and that you are not trying to judge the OP. The OP might be in a vulnerable situation. They may be panicking about a worrisome symptom. They may be in turmoil about whether to get WLS. They may be freaking out about a stall. When they’re upset, it’s easier for them to misinterpret your well-meaning post. Thank you for doing your best to keep the environment at BariatricPal positive, encouraging, and open. We all need a place to go for help and support, and I want the entire weight loss surgery to feel comfortable using BariatricPal for advice and encouragement.

Flintstones Complete has Iron, and my doctor and nutritionist both recommended them. They have more zinc and iron than all of the bariatric brands I checked.

Hey there! I'm six weeks out, so probably not as new as you're looking for... but here's my advice anyway.
Walking is the best way to get rid of the gas. Walk, walk some more, and then walk some more.
It took me 4 or 5 days to have a bowel movement - you're only 2 days post-op, so don't start worrying yet!
Congratulations, and welcome to the loser's bench!

. Mine just eased today... I had a bowel movement and wow! Game changer. I feel somewhat normal! I'm only a day ahead of you...maybe tomorrow:). I admit that I 'cheated'- I had a regular cup of coffee.. 1 Splenda and a splash of skim milk... 30 minutes later and I was good to go. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My calorie goal is between 600 and 800 calories, at least until I'm 3 months out.
If you're not weighing yourself at all, are you taking your measurements? I bet there's more of a change than you think there is.

I am almost three months out. I have had pizza and hamburger since surgery. The pizza I had was a super-thin crust pizza and it's just very difficult to get the Protein I need from pizza, especially within my calorie limits, so it's something I avoid. I've had "hamburger" as well, but as you mentioned, it's more like two bites of a burger, and I limit the bun, skip the cheese and mayo. I have even had a chicken wing. I'll tell you that buffalo wings are definitely less appealing when you can't drink anything for 30 minutes afterward. I even had a bite of my kid's dessert once.

The reality for me though, is that I know that I have to focus on getting my Protein in first and if I eat something that is junk, I'm not going to have room in my little tummy for what I really *need* to eat, and it just doesn't seem like a hardship to forego the nacho appetizer or blooming onion. Yes, they might initially look good, but when I actually eat the food I *need* to eat, I feel so satisfied that the crap just isn't even appealing. It's kind of like after Thanksgiving dinner....yes, you love pumpkin pie, and it looks good, but, yeah.....I'm good saying no to that right now.
I think another part is that after the pre-op diet and the restrictions post-surgery, you do start to (hopefully) develop some different food habits. I don't say no to favorite foods, but I do focus on healthier ways to make them and healthier options....which is kind of a big part of the point anyway. A grilled chicken breast "feels" more like a cheeseburger did to me before surgery. Breakfast before surgery would be eggs and toast. Now it's a quarter of a low-carb tortilla, 1.5 T scrambled egg whites and a 1/3 of a serving of turkey sausage - and it has the same feeling to me as a big Breakfast.< /p>
So...the short summary is....you'll be able to eat those things, but hopefully the surgery would be a great tool to help you change your perspective and those favorite foods won't be so important to you?
