My "go to" Breakfast choices are ground turkey, pesto and cheese, cubed ham, an egg and cheese; leftover dinner from the night befor. If I'm going for a run, I typically have 1/4 steel cut oats mixed with 1/3 milk, half a carton of greek yogurt and a tbs of Peanut Butter. I agree that breakfast doesn't need to be traditional "breakfast" food.

Just my opinion, but it is never selfish to put yourself, and your health above the wishes of others. Also, you should not feel like your decision to put yourself first and take control of your health is hurting other people. By having surgery, taking control of your life and health, you are putting yourself in a better position to take care of others. It is your sister and mother who are being incredibly selfish by making you doubt your decision. Please don't give them the power over your life. It is YOUR life. You are making, in my opinion, one of the best, most courageous decisions you can make to improve your life. I hope you go forward with your surgery, and I wish you luck with any decision you ultimately make.

Can I ask a question? Why are you scared or butter, bacon or sausage? Is it because you're concerned your body won't handle those food well it because they will make you gain weight? In my opinion you need some fat in your diet (fat doesn't make you fat) and there is nothing wrong with a bit of butter, sausage or bacon. I had bacon wrapped shrimp for dinner the other night. It was a delicious, high Protein dinner that fit nicely in my plan.

Preach it, VSGAnn! That was one of the hardest lessons for me to learn. Once you make this decision, you need to put yourself first. It's not selfish, it's self preservation. There is a woman I see at the same salon I go to who had surgery 6 months after I did with the same surgeon. I've lost 130 lbs . . . she's lost 40ish. She never got the memo that you need to put yourself first, so she never did. She feels that her kids, husband, didn't sign up for surgery so they shouldn't have to suffer. She continues to feed them (and by default) eat the same food that got her to the point were she needed surgery. You know what, that plan doesn't work. This new lifestyle takes commitment and the inner strength to do whatever the hell you need to do to get healthy. Teach your kids healthy eating habits, but if that doesn't work, make two dinners, You betcha.
I know I'm hijacking this thread, but I feel it's an important message, and I'm glad you brought it up, Ann. This journey gets sooooo much easier when you realize you deserve to be on it!

In my opinion, this is a bad idea for someone who has been in maintenance for a while. Liquids won't do anything for you. To carb detox rapidly, I try to eat all Protein . . . specifically all meat or all meat/dairy. After the first few days, the carb cravings are gone and I can reintroduce healthy carbs (veggies, etc.) into my diet.

This post has me worried for you. I speak from experience. I experienced some of the same behaviors as you. Feeling "guilty" for eating, exercising to extreme to compensate, etc. I would end up on the treadmill late at night, even if I was exhausted, because I didn't think I burned enough calories. I got to the point where it started to impact my health. My cholesterol went from normal to 323. My PCP called my surgeon who made me come into the office. He walked into the room, didn't even say hello and opened the appointment with "you're slowly killing yourself and it's going to stop right now." He required me to meet with the dietitian on a bi-weekly basis for a while as well as see the program's psychologist. I was diagnosed with exercise bulimia. It took a very long time to recover both physically and mentally. Please stop this behavior while you're still early out. First, one small spoonful of cranberry sauce will not stall your weight loss, cause you to gain weight, or otherwise hurt you. Second, you can't out exercise a bad diet. Third, working out for 2 hours to burn off a bit of cranberry sauce is familiar behavior to me and is a hallmark of exercise bulimia. I would hate for you to continue down the path you're on, and develop a full blown eating disorder. Good luck.

I would get rid of the crackers. You list the nutritional content, but don't include the carb amount, which I'm sure is high. Babbs' idea of cheese crisps is a good one.

@@jenn1 No actually. My surgeon has been really helpful. He's a runner and has a good handle on nutrition issues. He worked with me to figure out what I could eat prior to and during a run to maintain energy and it's been successful. Also the former dietitian in his office did a ton of research for me and came up with a menu plan that I used during my last 1/2 (I've done 5 since my VSG and countless 10ks). She never came back from maternity leave, so I'll have to meet with her replacement and see if she's willing to work with me. Also, with my sleeve, I had great restriction, but nowhere near as small as some people who post here. It was nice since it gave me the control I needed to get to goal, but I was able to eat enough to fuel my activity. It will be interesting now since I had to convert to RNY, I have much more food sensitivity than I did originally, and I dump on carbs, so a long run scares me. I've done 2 10ks since my conversion (both with my surgeon) and I was fine, but I'll have to see when I try to run double the distance. I was just saying to a friend of mine that I'm going to have to try Pasta before May to see how it sits, or I'm going to have to come up with a plan B.

I"m still too intimidated to try a full marathon. I have a half coming up in May, but haven't started my serious training. My calories in non-training mode stay between 1000 and 1200 (my MBR was tested at 1239) My surgeon would like me to be at 1200 consistently, but I gain weight and am very hesitant. I'm trying though, particularly since my runs are going to start ramping up. Like you, I increase carbs the week before a run since I can't carb load in the traditional sense the day before. Although the day before is also more carb heavy than normal.
Even when I'm not training for a run, my workout schedule is pretty intense. I run 2x a week, spin 1-2x a week, do TRX once a week, kickbox 1x a week and take random other classes (yoga sculpt, a HIIT class). That's why my surgeon is very unhappy with me that I'm below 1200 many days.
A bit of background so you know my playing field. Im 5'. Had VSG on May 12, 2014 and got down to goal when I started suffering from severe Reflux. I converted to RNY on 7/1. Prior to surgery, I gained up to 142 lbs (the only thing that brought any relief was Ritz crackers and I ate them by the sleeveful over the course of the day). I' down to 120ish right now but finding it difficult to stay there. I went up over the holidays and the weight is slowly coming off. I'm grateful for this thread and the experience you all have. No offense to any new post surgery people, but I need the advise from those who have been in maintenance for a while and can help me find balance.

Going back to high Protein, low carb has worked for me. After the holidays I was up about 5 lbs. By increasing my Protein, lowering my carbs to approx. 40g a day and increasing my fluids (never a problem for me, but i'm drinking even more than usual), I've lost 3 lbs since Christmas. I know it's unlikely to keep coming off at that rate, but I find high protein low carb works for me and makes me feel my best also.

Well, and just to give you an idea how fast things can go south:
I was towing the line really well around Christmas. Like staying the same weight within literally a half pound. I was so proud of myself!
Then winter hit here in Boise.
We got more snow in the last couple of weeks than we've gotten in literally 2 winters. @@jenn1 can vouch. We were trapped in our neighborhoods, people couldn't get to work, school was closed for 6 days, and we were shoveling snow every couple of hours for a week straight. I was having to forgo the gym to take my son to work because his sedan couldn't get out of his subdivision for a week. Every time I would get enough gumption to go to the gym, I'd decided to not go because the roads were so treacherous. I figured shoveling snow would suffice.
Between not going to the gym for almost 2 weeks, and a little comfort and frustration eating, I am up 3 pounds as of this morning. Just like that. The good news is I think there's a break in the weather, and I actually made my ass go to the gym today and I feel better But it will take me a month to get this off. Honestly.
Life happens, but we have to learn to adapt and roll with the punches without it totally derailing our progress. This is the hardest part of the whole thing.

Sunday will be me day and prep day! Got in a 1 mile walk, not much but better than I have been the last 9 months! Other thing I did not realize how far I fell short, my vitamins! All those are portioned and zip-lock bagged for easy daily consumption!

@@ChunkyChicTrying I am 2.5 years post op, and while I have not regained, I understand the issues you face. I sense that you may be looking for a quick answer to your problem where I feel there is none. You said it yourself, you're looking for where to start BESIDES the fundamental basics. That, my friend, is your answer. I don't work nearly as many hours as you do, but I do work a 70+ hour work week and I find that sticking to basics, and planning my meals, is key. If you plan and have healthy, Protein forward, on plan food available, then at 1:00 a.m. or later, you won't need to prowl the streets looking for a place to get food. You'll have it available. Fundamental basics are your friend. You want a 5 day reset? In my mind the 5 day pouch test is a load of crap. You need to reset your body by eating Protein forward. When I need a reset, I eat meat . . . . basically just meat . . . . steak, ham, turkey, chicken. For five days, I'll eat as much meat as I need to feel satisfied and not hungry. Doing so will rid you of the cravings for carb heavy (I don't know if this is your downfall, but it is mine) off plan foods that will hinder not help your progress. After the five days, I'll start limiting my portion size to 3 oz of dense protein and some veggies and I record every bite I eat. Eating this was has helped me get to and maintain a 130lb loss.
I think the idea of a scale that measures body composition is a good idea. Because I think it would be very enlightening. I don't believe there is a strong correlation between weight loss and building muscle. It is very difficult during the early weight loss phase to build a significant amount of muscle, since you need a large quantity of protein to do so. It's a nice thought, but according to my surgeon, PCP and dietitian, not grounded in science.
I wish you good luck in getting back on track. I think if you go back to basics, and to the plan advocated by many surgeons you will see the loss start up again.
