There are two phases to weight loss surgery. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and I transitioned from the Weight Loss phase to the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. But it also depends on the type of surgery. Some individuals with the sleeve generally get there in up to 2 years. And it depends on who much weight you have to lose and your own body chemistry.
For those with gastric bypass, you body changes physically. After surgery, the part of your stomach that process fats and sugars has been cut away and these substances will quickly pass out of your stomach and into your intestines which does not know what to do with them. That is why your surgeon restricts your diet to eliminate or minimize these. But after several months, you intestines change and learn how to process these substances. Around this time hunger returns. It is not as strong as before surgery, but the honeymoon period is over.
Anyways if you had gastric bypass, you may be transitioning into the Maintenance phase. The strategies are different between these two phases, so you must adjust accordingly. Anyways this is my impression of the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

My appetite returned between the 8th and 9th post-op month. Activities that decrease my cravings and hunger include aerobic exercise (e.g. running, jogging, bicycling, hiking, stair climbing) and drinking caffeinated coffee. Caffeine cuts my appetite dramatically, even though some people may be opposed to it.
Activities that cause me to feel hungrier include weightlifting and watching television. While I'll continue to lift weights, I've greatly curtailed my TV-watching because it promotes a sedentary life.

Forgive me for even giving advice because I have not had surgery yet (July 19) but I did find a way to avoid or change my cravings for carbs or sweets. Long term: learn what the good gut bugs in you want to eat. Add more probiotic FOODS to your diet like fermented veggies, kefir, etc. And feed the good bacteria what they like to eat which is natural fibers. Roasted root veggies, seeds, all kinds of resistant starches. That is long term. For immediate help with a sugar craving, what works for me is cooked greens. With garlic and sea salt. I don't know why greens works but it does for me. Hope I helped.

I make "tacos" all the time. I just skip the taco shell and have the shredded beef, low fat black refried Beans with cheese and salsa on top

It can all be very confusing!! Are you still trying to lose weight or are you at maintenance? I think that will make a huge difference. You are right that it's hard to find options that are both low in carbs and fats. Sometimes we have to create our own recipes. I saw one recently that looks really good, that might help you with your taco craving. I saw where someone took cheddar cheese and spread it out on parchment paper. They put it in the microwave and melted it. Then they laid the melted cheese on the paper, over an upside down bowl. The cheese hardened and formed like a bowl. After it hardens, fill the "cheese bowl" with all the ingredients used for a taco. I'll see if I can find the recipe and attach it. If you haven't already joined, go on Facebook and join Rock's Kitchen. The administrator had WLS and wonderful recipe ideas are posted every day.

I have the same "problem". I notice some days or even weeks I can eat more than others... I meal prep for work and some days I can eat the whole meal and some days I can only eat half... initially I was concerned but I got over it and decided it's just my body telling me when I need more or less food... I don't try to overthink it anymore...

Yup, same as SoCalLaura said. There are some days I can have 3 meals and 2 small (healthy) Snacks. Then there are some days that I can only manage 2 meals. It does fluctuate, and I don't think it's anything you can really change.

I had a small slice of pumpkin pie today, and I felt NO GUILT AT ALL! Do you know why? It was because this is a lifetime change, not a daily grind. Yeah, we have to pay attention day by day, but we can also let loose on our restrictions for a single instance now and then, because we are human.
Tomorrow it will be back to lots of Protein, little carbs, and working out. In the meantime , I was able to relax and enjoy the day. I hope you can do the same.

I'm down 100 lbs since my first consultation in July, was sleeved in august and have reached my surgeons goal. Still want to reach my goal though .. 20 more lbs to go!

Needed to see this... The other day I had a piece of my favorite candy. Pulparindo extra hot and salted tamarind with chile mmmMM... but I felt guilty. I cycled an extra hour for it lol.
I, too, have to always work on: Letting. It. Go.

Perfect! No room for guilt. Don't let food rule your brain in such a negative way. YOU are in charge, pie isn't.

Was it yummy? Was it a one (or two) time thing just for the holidays? Can you go take a long walk to work it off?
No biggie! Let go of the guilt. You enjoyed it, your stomach is healed, you took a controlled piece. Much better than you would have done in previous years, right?

We all have something along the journey. As long as you don't have it everyday and it is a small portion you will be fine.
