I have GERD and have been on med for it for years. I can't miss a dose or it's really bad. My PA told me this week at my #6 nutritional visit that my sliding hiatal hernia will be repaired during surgery, and then I can expect to be free of GERD.

I have my first WLS appointment later this month and am really leaning toward the sleeve but have heard it makes existing GERD worse. The surgeons office said they will correct my hernia at the time of surgery. Anyone have experience with GERD and having a sleeve?

My hubbyman and I both agree that her curves are lovely and healthy. After being a 22/24 for decades, I would love to have her body. And he and I discussed before my surgery about how far did I want to take this. I want to stop about where I am and he is on board with that. I don't need to be a dog bone to be happy and healthy.

Agree with the other posters. After all those shakes I craved veggies so I got some divine green juice that was very expensive and only 50 calories. When I saw a hamburger and fries on a fast food commercial it made me nauseous. I love my sleeve. My sleeve was very "picky" in the beginning and would only tolerate very healthy food. Now I can eat just about anything just not too much of it. I'm 7.5 months out and still have not been to a single fast food joint and don't plan to ingest those nasty chemicals again ever. I definitely have picked a French fry or two off of a friends plate at a restaurant tho. And I do eat "paleo" which includes potatoes. I have even had some Amy's organic pizza, but opted last night to make my own with cauliflower crust instead. I drink Vitamin Water zero every day and accidentally got a sugary one instead. I took one sip and spit it out because it tastes DISGUSTING. Like for real I thought holy crap what's the expiration date on this thing it tastes horrible. Then after I parting the bottle looking for an expiration date I realized my mistake and was like wow. That being said I can tolerate small amounts of dark chocolate now and the occasional treat. Just enjoy this time and your new taste buds. I make nearly everything I eat now from scratch, because that's what my sleeve wants and the sleeve gets what she wants. I take very good care of her and she takes good care of me;-)

The pre-op and fou stage post-op phases are as effective as a detox. You have flushed a lot of sugar, salt, and grease out of your system. Meds may be affecting your taste buds, too.
The first time I ate a french fry, at about five weeks, I gagged. Clearly, it wasn't the potato I went for, it was the salt and the grease. At the processing plant, McDonald's fries are dipped in a corn-based sugar solution before packaging. Same goes for Long John Silver's Battered Fish. I ate the fish so that I could have the greasy, salty batter.
No wonder our food tastes differently post-op. We are eating in a purer and more natural form, closer to the way food is supposed to taste without all of the additives and Condiments that we add to it. Seriously, I had to learn to eat all over again so that food is for nutrition and not entertainment and comfort.

I agree with Ann 100%! When you loose weight you will be thrilled that smaller clothes fit but your fashionista gene somehow switches on... Clothes will have to be cute and stylish. You will feel like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. You will have much more fun with that gift card if you wait!

My advice would be no. Don't buy now.
This next bit applies mostly if you're a woman (I can't tell from your profile).
Many women who lose weight rapidly via WLS wind up completely redefining their clothing / hair / makeup / style. Someone said here once, and it so rang true for me, that when you're fat you just buy anything that fits because you're so grateful it accommodates your body mass. After you lose weight, your selection criteria become much more complicated than that.
Also, and I know you know this, Target ALWAYS has big sales. This isn't the last sale they'll ever have. Save the gift card for when you want to reward yourself for having lost 10-20-30-50-100 pounds.

It's been a while since I've been on here and just wanted to share my progress. My starting weight was 314, I'm currently 196! I'm amazed at the difference and progress I've made! I wish anyone thinking about surgery or just beginning their journey the best! This was the best decision I've made and it has truly changed my life!

Order scrub pants with drawstring instead of elastic. You can wear bigger sizes for much longer.

My husband is the same. 6'2 and 150 lbs and has never had this struggle and just doesn't understand. He wasn't very interested in me getting the surgery either. He was worried about how it would effect my health. He couldn't go to any of my appointments with me, but I shared all the information with me and let him know the very small percent of people that died or had complications and that helped him feel better about it. I'm a little over 10 months out and 142 lbs down and it hasn't had a negative effect on our relationship. He likes that we can do so much more and that I'm happier and more comfortable with my body. He has been supportive, except for the occasional treats he brings home. I made the decision for me and my body and health and I think my confidence in that decision has helped him feel better about it.

I posted this in another August thread yesterday. But thought I should share here as well. I decided to take a new picture yesterday. The first picture was not taken at my heaviest but about two years ago, the second was taken yesterday. I am down about 85 lbs total and still want to lose about 40 more. My RNY was on August 27th 2015.

I tried them and they are TERRIBLE! They took weeks to arrive and then they were all flattened like they'd been crushed. I'm not sure if they normally look like that or not...I tried them and they tasted awful and I've tried many Protein Bars for comparison. The customer service was also terrible. I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. I emailed them several times with no response. My advice, go on skinnytaste.com and get a recipe to make your own!

I had a closet full of shirts and pants that did not fit going back 10 years; shortly after surgery my jeans were falling down and I found a smaller pair- and got rid of all my 'big' jeans. Ditto for shirts; I now have 20 shirts that fit me again but will get rid of as they become too big and other smaller ones begin to fit. Burn the bridges, but only after getting to the next size.

Thank you for this response! It was kind yet remained strong in reinforcing what is the correct thing I should do. What am I going to do? I am just going to be honest and tell the truth. I have withheld what is happening in my post op life because I do feel shame in not being the "good patient."
The simplest yet most effective thing is the truth. Why do we always seek to avoid that route?
He told me 80% of my stomach was removed. Having an un-textbook response and complications should not fill me with shame! I felt shame gaining the weight and maybe it has become my default setting in my mental process.
To answer other statements/questions re: therapist. Yes! I am in therapy with an empathetic yet intelligent therapist. She is kind in allowing me to talk about what I am subjectively experiencing yet is insistent in telling me when my thinking is, for a lack of a better term, faulty.
Before this becomes it's own medical problem, I plan to call my surgeon's office Monday morning and speak with the nurse who works with the surgeon.
Thank you everybody for your input. I will work through and try to overcome shame and just be honest.

It actually is possible to drink too much Water and in your case, I suspect that is true. You aren't getting enough nutrition to be flushing out your system like that. You must be drinking constantly in order to achieve that kind of intake. How will you ever have room for food?? Of course you're not hungry. Try sipping about 64 oz of Water throughout the day instead, only between meals, and leave those 30-60 minutes between food and drink.

So, I am a middle aged woman and definitely have a drop in hormones. My libido has dropped some but not alot. So, what I will share is that with the hormone drop my girl parts can get...uncomfortable. I found topical hormone treatments helps build back that"thin tissue" and it is very low risk Healthwise (much lower hormone level than pills).
The other comment, and it may not apply to anyone posting here...but there are things a man can do that drives me wild with anticipation. The mental part of it becomes even more interesting and important as I have aged. I feel as though I have ready overshared...so will stop now.
