Do You Eat Breakfast? What Do You Have?

an omelet or scramble of 6 T. liquid egg whites, 1 oz. lo fat cheese, 1/4 c. chopped broccoli, and some salsa. if i don't get my protein in early, i have a hard time reaching my daily goals. ALSO no breakfast= poor choices later in the day. i find that i am developing an allergy to poor choices. it's a good problem to have!

    Hair loss

i am 5 months post op today. yup, it's gonna' fall out. thin, really. i let my hair grow to hide hair loss i knew was coming, but on me it aged me. so i embraced the process, cut my hair short, and try to meet my nutrition goals every day. my hair has always been my one vanity. as a big man it was the one thing i could easily change and control. now that i have lost 150 lbs, almost half of my goal, somehow it doesn't seem quite as important. and when i reach my goal and my weight is stable, it will grow back!
  3. i asked my surgeon if i would "shrink out" of my cpap. he said probably. however, he knows a marathoner w/ 10% body fat on cpap. it is an airway issue, too, not just weight. so i will do whatever is best for my health, now and as i reach my goals. adjustable pressure machine sounds interesting.
  4. one little trick i learned. if you are "D"izzy, it is usually "D"ehydration. if the "P"it of your stomach aches, it is usually not enough "P"rotein. another experience of mine, i would get dizzy/ feel drunk for about 2-3 seconds as i was walking somewhere. this was not when standing up, but after walking some steps or even walking for a few mins. both the surgeon and NUT said i had lost enough weight that my center of gravity had changed and my brain was "resetting my gyroscope". Crazy, but cool!

    how fast?

i was on the pre op liquid diet 4 weeks because of high bmi. since early june till today i've lost 148...2 pounds till 150! about 25-30 pounds per month. not tired, weak, or hungry. thank god i saved all my "less fat than i am now" clothes. i have several wardrobes in descending sizes, and as i shrink through them, the thrift stores are going to be getting a lot of clothes.
  6. i thought long and hard over the "tell, don't tell" issue. my first thought was that it made me seem weak, i didn't have what it took to loose weight on my own. second thought, and my current way of thinking, yes, i needed the help of surgery, but I WANT TO LIVE! i don't tell everyone in sight, but i don't lie or try to hide it. i have many people who will come up to me and say"How many pounds lost now?" i have shopped at a big and tall store for years. i told the clerk that she wouldn't see me any more and the reason why. I thought her reply was classy" I'm glad to loose you as a customer, and gain you as another healthy person on the planet!" follow your heart, but lies have a way exposing themselves in the end.
  7. EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth gets measured, weighed, or portioned, and then logged in a food journal. i'm 4.5 months post op, and a meal is 2 oz cooked protein and 1/4 c. veggies, maybe 1 T. greek yogurt (as a mayo sub) or salsa. that's 1/2 c., 8-9 T. food TOTAL per meal. i eat 4 meals and have 2 watered down smoothies per day. total fluid intake 80-96 floz. if i have 2.5 oz protein at a meal, i feel full, too full. 3 oz would be like the third plate at thanksgiving. (by the way, i did not miss the gluttony of thanksgiving this year. i had tastes of everything i wanted and that was just right!) if you keep eating like this you will stretch out your pouch or worse, need emergency surgery to repair damage. is that what you really want?
  8. i did 5 days liquid, 5 full liquids, 7 blended, 7 pureed, 7 soft, and then, cautiously, into full foods. avoid hard, raw veggies, nuts(creamy Peanut Butter ok) corn. one of my great joys was actually CHEWING food for the first time in a long time. just go slowly, use baby food spoons, and most importantly, listen to your body. it will tell you what you NEED not what you WANT! that first week post op i really wasn't that interested in ingesting much of anything. sip, sip, and sip some more. keep a shot glass and a glass measuring cup with a pour spout next to you. your Fluid intake is your #1 priority right now. good luck.

    Incentive Spirometer

i was given one in the hospital. i'm almost 4 months post op and i STILL use it every day. 5-6 x. i do sets of 10 and get to 3500. that's up from 3000 last month. "in with the good air, out with the bad..." i find it really helps me during cardio at the gym.

What can I do with...sweet peppers?

i put equal parts sweet(or hot)peppers and onions in the food processor(do each alone) grind until fairly fine, add salt and ground cumin and store in the frig as a raw relish. mix into chicken or tuna salad, a spoonful on eggs, mix with greek yogurt as a dip for veggies. will keep several weeks in a glass jar in the frig.

Guy's Room - Calorie target 9 months out?

i will be 4 months post op saturday. including pre op liquid, i've lost 142 to date. i average 650-750 cal, 75-85 g Protein, 20 g Fiber, and 96 oz fluids(mostly water) daily. i have 2 drinks i make daily: 1 T psyllium powder(better than the husks!) mixed w/ 8 oz lo-salt V-8, 16 oz Water and a couple dashes of hot sauce. #2 1 T ground chia seeds mixed w/ 8 oz skim milk, 16 oz water, and 1/4 c. blueberries in the blender. i do 60 mins. water aerobics(so-so knees) 3 X per week. am getting ready to add in weights and cardio machine(bike/elliptical)2 X. i don't feel tired, week, or hungry. my current loss rate is about 25 lbs per month. i try to have 1/4 c raw veggies with every meal. the 3F's fiber, Fluid, and fitness are the key to keep um...THINGS...moving. great to hear from some GUYS!
  12. i too took gummies post op but when they were gone switched back to a regular multi. my nut said any kind ok, just make sure it has Iron, even a small amount. i take 1 am and 1 pm.

    Endoscope-painful?

you're out. maybe a bit of a sore throat, that's it.
  15. i'm almost 4 months post op, have lost 141 lbs so far, and a new body is starting to emerge. after YEARS of carrying all the extra weight, my shoulders roll forward and my pelvis is tilted. i have heard of "intelliskin" posture shirts w/o straps and belts. i'm thinking of getting a "foundation v neck tank, but 3x is the largest size and i'm not quite there yet. also, and it is a BIG also, these shirts are $95 each(OUCH). just want to know thoughts before i invest, or if it is even worthwhile.

    What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

2 oz turkey, 2T mashed sweet potato, 2T stuffing, 1T gravy, 1T cranberry sauce. then in about 1 hour 2T pumpkin pie(just the filling). i found some gingerbread spice herbal tea that reminds me of mulled cider, but without all the calories and sugar. that, and the chance to be truly thankful for the MANY BLESSINGS that i have this year, will be on my thanksgiving plate!

    Pre op liquid diet

don't cheat, not even once. stay as close to zero fat as possible. get the lowest sugar/highest protein powder you can find. have shakes @ 6,9,12,3,&6. drink as much zero cal bevs as possible(water is best). i averaged 700-800 cal per day. you want your liver to shrink as much as possible, because they have to move it aside to get to your stomach. good luck and see you after the recovery room!

    RNY vs. Sleeve

i had the sleeve. laproscopic and robotic! i was only to be in overnight, but couldn't keep fluids down. so two nights. morphine in the hospital but NO pain meds once i got home. started walking the day i got home, half a block then a block etc. one big plus with the sleeve, over a period of several years(once weight goal is achieved) your stomach NATURALLY stretches back out- never to pre-op size- but enough that you can eat a reasonable plate of food again. (smart and healthy choices) you will NEVER be able to eat a heaping Thanksgiving plate again. i do take a B, D-3, and 2 multivitamins a day, but that is it. with the rny you have malabsorption issues for the rest of your life. that scared me off the rny. i'm about a week shy of four months post op and have lost 138 lbs. i feel great, not tired or hungry, and i do water aerobics 3 days a week for 60 mins. what ever you choose, embrace it with no regrets. this is your chance to live! use it wisely.
  21. i started at a BMI of 66, 515 lbs and this morning am 388, 53. with 127 lbs lost, i'm a little over a third of my way to my goal. 4 days ago i was 3 months post op. i am Very pleased with my results so far.
  22. i keep hearing about this "cauliflower crust pizza". sounds wonderful and i am off all flours at this point. i am somewhere on the gluten intolerant scale, but not a serious allergy. where can i find a recipe? here is another trick i use. ALWAYS eat at the same times every day. make and take a meal or snack with you to work or especially running errands. if you have a healthy something sitting next to you in the car (w/ your mini spoon!) you are less likely to make unhealthy choices.
  23. my surgeon suggested losing at least HALF of my weight before he will repair my umbilical hernia. if done early, massive weight loss could cause things to shift and the repair will need to be repaired.
  24. at three month post op i am using psyllium fiber and ground chia seeds. 80-96 oz fluids every day(that takes some doing!) the 3 "F's", fiber, fluid, and fitness. the more you move the more you will"move". in months one and two it was not unusual for me to go 4-5 days w/o bm. very unnerving but this too shall pass! (sorry)
  25. just take it easy. you can get a huge number of calories in smoothies. just be aware of your fruit intake, again high calorie. i would strongly caution you on coffee, even decaf. the acids in coffee could give you problems. i had great success at this stage eating my full liquid out of a bowl with a baby spoon. ANY OTHER SHAPED VESSEL THAN A GLASS! i got very tired of drinking my "food".
