I agree with the recommendation to work with a trainer. You can talk through your goals and what you want to accomplish through your exercise regimen (flexibility, balance [so important as we age], building muscle, etc) and the best ways to accomplish those goals. It's a financial investment, but well worth the guidance. There is a wide spectrum between using light weights and powerlifting, which a good trainer can help you navigate safely, without causing injury or overtaxing your body.
I also would point out that strength training will probably be more obvious in how it helps every day life sooner than you might notice it appearance-wise, especially if you are doing functional training. Even at my heaviest, I was training regularly (cardio, strength, balance, etc) and honestly it made life so much easier compared to when I wasn't.

I am 5 1/2 years out from RNY. Had consistent sore throat pain in spite of being on Omeprazole. Dr explained that I had small hiatal hernia which allowed stomach acid to seep into esophagus. Last endoscopy must have pushed stomach Bach down below diaphragm because pain substantially reduced. Best of luck to you.

I’m 5 years out and don’t cook. I found I could eat almost anything in smaller portions. I have the sliders at Arbys when I’m out and about. I also do Asian food. I never eat sweets anymore because I still dump, thank goodness.

Do you know why you gave up on your eating plan? Is there something happening in your life causing you undue stress. Are you grieving a loss? Do you think you might be depressed? Are you self-medicating with food? If you have access to a therapist, they can help you try to get to the root of WHY you feel the urge to eat the wrong things (or in the wrong amounts). Unfortunately, surgery helps the body lose weight but it doesn't cure the emotional issues that may have caused us to overeat in the first place.
In the meantime, I don't know what you're eating that is problematic, but maybe start by getting rid of junk food, soda, sugar, etc. Go back to Protein, veggies and fruit. Don't worry about quantity, but start by focusing on making good food choices. Once you "detox" from your problem foods, it will be much easier to figure out how you should eat going forward.
Have you contacted your bariatric team? They should be able to provide support and guidance (and maybe a referral to a therapist). Best wishes, hope you can get back on track soon. Hugs. 🤗

Great idea. I was also gonna suggest that. Lots of pantries, churches, etc. Definitely look around. Especially this time of year many places have things like hams and turkeys they're giving out too. And absolutely no judgement. Many of us have been in your shoes at some point in time in our lives and some still are.

It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it! We went out of town with friends and had several large cookouts while I was on my pre op. It was not easy, but taught me self control. I just kept super busy. When everyone was cooking I helped cook and clean up so that I would constantly be moving. I had my own “food” and ate that while others ate theirs. You can do this! Just keep thinking about the rewards that you are working towards! Good luck!

Achieving any goal takes discipline and desire.

What do you really, really want? What are you willing to do to get it?

These are tough questions in any area of life, including health.

As we examine ourselves carefully we may see areas where we excel and where we need to make changes.

Wishing you wisdom and courage as you discover who you want to be.

Could I add, there is nothing wrong with having bariatric surgery for cosmetic reasons. Most of us have multiple reasons for doing the surgery because we are complex creatures.

I'm pretty sure this person just came here to stir the pot. But if he/she didn't......... shame on them.
I feel no pity for them.... the very first post was how he/she was not following the plan... and "guessed" that he/she was eating 800. If you are "guessing" 800 you can bet it's more like 1600.......but he/she won't log food to see what he/she is actually eating....

I had my surgery in Mexico. It was literally the best health care experience I've ever had. I researched the hell out of it and chose an excellent doctor and hospital. The doctor was trained and certified in the US, and had excellent success rates. If it's a quality hospital and up-to-date surgeon, they use the same medical practices as they do in the US. But because labor is so much cheaper there, the nurses hover over you and take such good care of you. I did have one issue when I had an allergic reaction to a medication and we had trouble explaining what was going on to the nurse, but then they went and got one of the doctors that spoke better english.

I'm absolutely sure that your friend has your best interests at heart. But she may not be well informed about this subject. Lots of people think bariatric surgery is a bad idea no matter who you are and where you do it. My mom was definitely worried when I told her I wanted to do it. But she talked to my sister-in-law, who is an endocrinologist, and told her "oh yeah, bariatric surgery works, it will add 10 years to her life."

And surgery in Mexico sure sounds shady. But there's crappy surgeons in the US too. No matter where you are getting surgery, you should research the hell out of it and choose someone who you trust. My mom was nervous about it, but she also went with me and helped me communicate. I was very happy to have her along since you often feel pretty bad right afterwards.

There's nothing wrong with re-evaluating your plan and making sure you're comfortable with your choices. But there's basically a 100% chance that someone who loves and cares about you will think its the wrong decision. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. In the end, it's your choice, not theirs. You're the one who is living in your body, you're the one who knows best what you need, and you're the one who looked into this and got the information and made the decision. That's how it should be.

My most painful breakup was with vanilla ice cream. Before surgery it was my favorite food. Five years later I still dump on it and it has lost its appeal, like a former lover who I found out was a person of no substance.

As everyone said, there are as many different eating plans as there are surgeons. My doctor's plan was lowish-carb (not Keto low, but controlled). It emphasized Protein first, then veggies and not pushing my restriction. He said if I did that calories would take care of themselves and it did work out that way. I tracked (and still do) everything I eat so that I am aware of how many calories I am taking in and what the macros are.
I actually also eat about 6 mini-meals per day rather than 3 "big" meals. But if eating that way isn't working for you, try the more traditional 3 meals per day approach. Low-fat has never worked for me as it leaves me hungry, but your body might react well to it. Different bodies thrive on different approaches. At 6 weeks out, you are still very early in the process. Ask your bariatric program what they recommend and then adjust as needed to accommodate your body's needs.

You don't what to put the cart before the horse. Do your homework on the various WLSs out there. If you believe WLS if for you then you will find a surgeon. When you speak with your surgeon you should bring up all your concerns, your history, and your future. Undoubtedly your surgeon will take your situation into account when arriving at a recommendation. If WLS is one of the recommendations then your post-op life will be part of the discussion and planning you and your surgeon undertake.
Worrying about the first 6 weeks of post-op life would be the least of my concerns.
    Good luck.
