LessOfMe0503 got a reaction from Alex Brecher in Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
My NUT is pretty decent. In my one on one, she asked what my normal meals are, what worries I had about nutrition after surgery, and gave me suggestions. During the pre op class, she was rather scripted. One lady had tons of questions about could she change this and that and she kept saying, this is the suggested plan... but the 2 of them spent some time in the corner after class so maybe they were working through it.
I wonder if some programs have decisions made for them by someone e higher up. For example, I'm a teacher and many decisions that are made about education have nothing to do with children, child development or educational research- but rather someone way up the line made a decision and I have to work within those boundaries. I know it can't just be in education that that happens, so maybe it is happened to nutritionists as well?

I was certain the pain wouldn't end either but honestly, my nurse said it best, every 24 hours that passes is a new day and a new you. It sounds so cheesy but it's true. Every day you'll feel just a little bit better. I didn't feel even semi-normal until about 5 days post op. I'm now 11 days out and I'm still sore and tired but so much better. I was also told not to focus/worry so much about the food, it's most important to make sure you're getting your fluids in because that's what's going to make the big difference on pain level, fatigue, etc.
    Best of luck.

I echo so much of what you all say. I am leaving for a business trip on Monday and am driving with a colleague for 9.5 hours because I am to heavy to be comfortable on a plane. I also will be the only one at this meeting who can not fit into the tshirt everyone wears for the group picture.
I want to walk up the three flights of stairs to my apartment without feeling like I am going to keel over. I want to be able to stop avoiding cameras and mirrors. My parents don't have a picture of me to include with my siblings and their children's pictures because I have avoided the camera for 20 years.
I have worked hard on my depression and to get binge eating under control over the last two years and I am working on loving myself for who I am on the inside. I just also want to feel comfortable in my skin even if I end up having extra of it.

Thing is, no one requires an IQ test pre-op.
Lots of WLS patients eat post-op like this clown does.
    Bless their hearts.

I'm temporarily living with my mother, who is obese and fully into her own food addiction.
I am forever hearing that I keep "too much food" in the refrigerator (kale, tomatoes, yogurt, cheese, peppers, Soups, leftovers from restaurants), and there is "no room for my food" (crap, crap and more crap).

Everyone’s different, so you have to do what is best for you. Some people do better when they have a home gym because…it’s at home. You don’t have to pack up and leave the house just to work out. You can watch whatever TV show you want, and blast your music.
There are some reasons why I like going to the gym. First, it’s a better deal in terms of money paid compared to equipment available. Each of those cardio machines costs thousands of dollars, and you can use whatever you want, whether it’s the bike, treadmill, or elliptical. They’re maintained for free – or at least on the gym’s dollar.
Then there are all kinds of weights and pulleys. Then there are group fitness classes – usually included in a gym membership. They’re motivating because you’re with other people and you learn new things – your workout never gets old with group fitness.
Another benefit of the gym, for me, is that it is a place to work out. Period. When I’m there, I’m focused. When I’m at home, there are so many things I can find to do, from checking email to cleaning the house. I’m always tempted to stop my workout early or delay getting started, whereas I’m less likely to do that at the gym.
These are my reasons for joining a gym. But, like I said, everyone’s different. I guess I might say to try a gym first, if you think it’s a possibility, before investing in thousands of dollars of equipment. It’s more tolerable to waste a hundred dollars or so on gym membership you don’t end up continuing than to sink thousands into some home equipment if you don’t end up using it.

I have POSE and failed at about 3.5 years out. I let myself slowly stretch my stomach back out. I've gained back 30 pounds and I was still 30 from goal when I started gaining. My aches and pains are back, my low energy is back, my moodiness and probably mild depression, is back. I am ready to surpass what I was able to do with POSE, take the lessons I learned and go even farther and be the best me I can be. I have a house full of clothes that weren't even goal size that within 4 months I could no longer fit into. I can't' wait to throw all those out because they are too big. I have an 11 year old son who begs me to swim and do things with him and I just deflect. I have a 2.5 year old princess that we tried for for 6 years and I'm letting the most fun years with her pass me by because I'm back in my funk. I'm ready to get back to living and loving and being fun to be around and decreasing the risks for all the weight related diseases I'm headed toward if I don't take care of this crap now. Praying for surgery date early in September.

LessOfMe0503 got a reaction from notforthefaint in Did anyone tell children ?
I told my 8 year old. I was very matter of fact about it. He was scared and said he didn't want me to have the surgery because he was afraid I would die. I acknowledged that fear and told him that surgery could be scary. I followed it up with the fact that I could die tomorrow with or without the surgery and that I wasn't scared. I talked to him about how I trusted my doctors and I wasn't scared. We talked a lot about what would happen during the surgery in terms of how it would impact him and that calmed him down. I have a dear friend who is retired and he calls nana that he stayed with the nights before and after my surgery. We also talked about how my mom (mawmaw) would come down to take care of us. Having the knowledge helped him but tailor your discussion to what your kids will need. I felt like I had to tell him because (a) I'm a single mom and have been relying on friends for support and ( it is changing our lives and he needed to know why.

I'd say I have 2 pet peeves. The first is when people say, "you put the weight on slowly, you need to take it off slowly." Are you kidding? It wasn't put on slowly. I look at a slice of cheesecake and the scale goes up 4 pounds.
The second is more of a fat bashing pet peeve. When people, particularly men, tell me I need to be healthier in order to be involved in their lives. I want to say, "Tell it like it is. You don't want to be seen in public with a fat person. You don't care about my health, what my Blood pressure, cholesterol, CBC, blood sugar, or EKG results are. All of which are perfect by the way."

The final straw was discovering that my risk of having a heart attack was higher than my risk of dieing during surgery. Fear of the actual surgery itself kept me on the fence for a really long time.

    Ms Grinder,
    Re: Disappointed with weight loss-
Just an FYI, I've been around here for years and I've seen many newbies attack the band with partisan studies as you have. You are not the first here to make these arguments. There are other studies that document just the opposite. It's fine for you as long as you need the validation that you made the right choice, but it's not alright to attack others here who have also made informed choices for themselves.
Your study takes in older bands using techniques(with a very small sampling) that are no longer valid. Newer bands and different surgery techniques along with better follow up have resulted in better outcomes than the 44% cited in your study. The sleeve seems to be a great option and I would never suggest that it was anything less. We all have to make these decisions for ourselves.
Until you walk in our shoes(you know)!

    Oh so many things...
    - being able to get the attention of guys I think are cute without feeling self conscious they'll be weirded out by my weight.
    - Not having to contort myself in order to get a good picture where I don't look as big.
    - Being able to shop in all those teens and twenty-something clothing shops like American Eagle without troubles.
    - Having my thighs not touch!!!
    - Not having to eat huge portions of food in order to just simply feel full because my stomach is stretched.
    - Not -despising- exercise because my body is so out of shape.
    - WATERSKIING! - I tried it once but I was too out of shape to pull myself up. So I want to be able to do it!
    - Being able to show my dog without feeling awkward and uncomfortable on my knees when stacking her into a show position. (Or anything ELSE I have to do kneeling).
    And so many many more..
