maggie409 got a reaction from melie in Before/After Pics
I reached 70 pounds lost this morning and I wanted to post a few photos for those considering WLS. I am five months post op and I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy in Tijuana Mexico. I used Dr Jesus Martin Lopez. He and his staff were amazing. I booked my surgery through BariatricPal and they were also wonderful. I have had no problems and I can tolerate 90% of what I eat. Every now and then I have something that doesn't agree with me. This doesn't mean I can never have it, I just wait and try later. It simply meant it wasn't time to have it yet. I attribute my lack of complications to Dr Lopez. He did an amazing job and is truly a talented surgeon.
The surgery is simply a tool. The biggest contributing factor to success is mental. I was ready mentally and prepared to NOT make food a priority in my life. I was ready and willing to give up whatever food I needed to make this work and to give it up for the rest of my life if necessary. Temptation has been there but I have not given in and I have not cheated. I still have 60 pounds to go to reach my goal. I WILL make it because I WANT to make it and I am WILLING to put in the work and sacrifice needed to get it done.
THIS HAS BEEN HARD! But it has been worth it. If you are considering WLS because you think it will be the easy option, please reconsider. The surgery did make it possible for me to make it half way to my goal. I could not have done it without VSG.
So, instead of saying onward and upward... I will say onward and downward! I am determined to post more pics on the future. I think the great thing about this forum is if I do screw up and I do cheat, I know I can come here for the swift kick in the ass that I need to get me back on track

maggie409 got a reaction from JupiterinVirgo in Wow.... Nutrition
I think my brain my explode. It is amazing to me what I did not know about Nutrition and how much I have learned through this process. It's no wonder I have been obese for so long. I realize a lot of you may already know this stuff or have learned it from your nutritionist but I have had to figure this stuff out on my own. So, I am going to impart some of what I have learned on the assumption that I am not the only clueless person here ????. And if I am the only clueless person, please be gentle lol.
    1. Balanced nutrition - Protein, carbs, and fats. An emphasis is certainly put on protein. It is the priority. However, Carbs and fats are also important. The balance of nutrition should be as close as we can get to: carbs - 40-50% of daily calories; protein - (women) 46% - (men) 56% of calorie intake; this doesn't leave much room for fat. The reason is fats contain 9 calories per gram whereas Proteins and carbs contain 7 calories per gram so less is required.
Carbs - this is your body's main source of energy. If you don't consume enough carbs, your body will then begin to burn protein (which is vital in WLS). Get healthy sources of protein from Apple juice, apple sauce, Potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruits, legumes, oatmeal, milks, etc. This is where I was making my mistake. Because Of this I was weak and tired and losing slowly.
Protein - this is our priority during WLS. You will be pounded protein protein protein. One important thing to keep in mind.... The human body can only absorb 20-30 grams of protein per hour. Anything consumed above this amount is converted to glucose. So if you pad your protein intake by adding protein to a Protein shake, you are actually drinking a high glucose Protein Shake. In addition, you are falling short on your daily protein requirement because some has been converted to glucose.
Fat - there are so many hidden fats in our foods even if you eat healthy. If you eat a banana to get your carbs, they have fats. Avocados have fats. If you wisely choose 3 ounces of grilled salmon it contains 10 gr of fat and at a low calorie intake that could be close to your total allowance.
If you use MyFitnessPal, you can go into your goals and nutrition. You can put in your daily calories you expect depending on your phase. Mine is set at 700 right now 5 weeks post op. Earlier phases will have less calories. Once you have your calories set, you can adjust your daily allowance of proteins, carbs and fats. When trying to decide how to calculate your percentages, never let your proteins get below 60 gr per day.
PLEASE.... If there is any other vital info that anyone has, share it here as well. I am really enjoying learning about nutrition and heathy eating.

I was sleeves June 15th and am at 192 from a high weight of 268. I finally got into a size 14 from a size 26 at the start. I have been super pleased with my decision to get the sleeve. I have had no complications and working hard to change my eating habits. I have about 50 or more pounds to go.

maggie409 got a reaction from jess9395 in Weight loss on track but I eat a LOT
Everyone on here is either obese or has been there. We all remember our past eating habits. One corn dog and one banana is a restricted meal compared to how we used to eat. I don't know about anyone else but I could sit and easily eat three or four corn dogs. If you have no restriction then why wouldn't you eat like in the past. It sounds like you do have restrictions, maybe the restrictions just aren't what you expected. I read posts about people who can only eat a few spoonfuls at a time. That probably isn't the case with you. That being said, it seems you should concentrate on nutrition if you truly want to experience permanent weight loss and improved long term good health. Whether your surgeon and/or NUT tells you too or not, do what is best for yourself. Take this time to learn

"I know someone who just died after having it done just a year ago" (turns out after she lost all her weight she only drank beer and smoked cigarettes and ate very little and it was junk. She poisoned and starved herself).
"My mothers housekeepers daughter is very ill and they don't expect her to make it after her surgery." (Was more than a year down the road and her illness wasn't related to the surgery at all).
