Strange Info from NUT re: Carbs

That is a good point; I wonder if it will be hard for me when I need to maintain if my body is used to maintain if my body is used to very low carb that being said, I have been eating low car by for 2 months, if I increase them now will that affect my weight loss too?

Strange Info from NUT re: Carbs

That's basically how she explained it. I was also told that I am attempting to "burn the candle at both ends" and there is no reason to have the severe calorie deficit and eat very low carb.

Strange Info from NUT re: Carbs

When I asked my actual surgeon, he told me that was a question for the NUT! So, I don't know, I feel uncomfortable with regularly eating 60+ grams of carbs, but I will get a second opinion from my personal nutritionist who I see once a month. I also kind of feel like I am losing a pretty good amount of weight, why mess with it?! I think what I may do, after getting this approved by my NUT, is eat the way I have been except for like one day per week or every two weeks where I'll allow myself slight more good carbs. Do any of you have a planed for "cheat day". Some research even suggests that it prevents your body from stalling out.
  4. So my husband and I were camping for the past 4 days, I did my best to eat right but I cheated a few times. We found this amazing little breakfast place and I ate half of an egg sandwich two days in a row. I also had two s'mores over the course of the trip with sugar free chocolate . I keep telling myself that this is the one vacation we take together all year and I shouldn't feel guilty, because I never cheat when I am at home, but then I wonder if I am just justifying my bad behavior. It's been two month since I got sleeved and this was the first time I "cheated" or ate off plan. I don't want to feel guilty, but I do. What do you guys think? Any advice?

    Should I feel Guilty?

So just to update, it looks like I dodged a bullet with my poor eating over our vacation. When I got home I weighed myself expecting to see a little bit of a gain, or at least stay the same, but I was actually down almost 2 pounds!!!! It makes me feel slightly better to know that I didn't sabotage myself. Regardless I will keep to plan at least 95% of the time. Thank you all for your help and kind words.

    Should I feel Guilty?

I never thought of it that way. I do eat right 95% of the time and I work out 5-6 days a week. Also, on my vacation we went on a 4 hour hike on day and a 2 hour hike the next day, so I got my exercise in too. I am just still kind of a newbie and its hard to break your old way of thinking. I felt so guilty pre surgery about what I had done to myself. Then for the past two months I felt proud and happy and then crash... I eat of plan and the guilt slips through. But you guys are right, no reason to sit and feel sorry for myself, I just need to do it right tomorrow. ????

    Should I feel Guilty?

Thank you guys so much. I am trying not to beat myself up about it, but it's hard. I just got home and I will make sure to get back on track. I am trying to be as honest and accountable as I can. I do understand that I have a limited time to get the best results. Vacation is over, I will go back to fallowing my plan to a a T

Why Am I Dropping Weight So Slowly?

Just think even if you only lose 2 lbs a week, that adds up to 104 pounds a year!!!!
  9. I would say yes it's selfish, but it's not wrong. Sometimes you need to be selfish in order to better your life for both you and your husband. I know I did.

    i think i have bulimia

Hey RNmamma, please don't worry, no one here thinks you are a bad mother. There are plenty of women that suffer with food disorders and are amazing mothers. That being said, how much easier would parenting be if you didn't worry so much about food. So, like he other poster said, I am not a doctor, but if you honestly feel it is a compulsion and you are engaging in purging on a regular basis, then yes I would think you would be classified as bulimic, but you absolutely should see a medical professional who specializes in eating disorders or psychology, in addition to meeting with your bariatric doctor to update him. If you are really concerned about the diagnosis you could look up the DSM-5 criteria for bulimia and see if you fit the required symptoms. I hope you get ahold of this and soon, not only for health reasons, but I know for me personally the constant worry about what food I consumed is annoying and almost heartbreaking. I'll be thinking of you. Please let us know what you decide to do. There is no shame in admitting you need help.

    i think i have bulimia

Not only is being bulimic and overweight possible, but I learned in my Abnormal Psychology course that it is the norm. Apparently a large percentage of bulimic patients are overweight. This is partially because bulimia often goes hand in hand with binge eating and after you consume 3,000-10,000 calories in a sitting and then purge you are only getting rid of at most 50% of the original intake. In other words it is common the people who suffer with bulimia are still consuming more then the average person, in terms of calories. That being said it is treatable and like any other habit it can be broken. If the OP's main concern is stomach stretching, please do t worry about that. I saw a great YouTube video regarding stomach stretching post sleeve surgery : look up Dr Mathew Weiner Stomach Stretching video, he explains it better then I can!

    Marriage/Relationship change

My relationship has improved in the past year since I first started considering WLS. My husband originally was against me getting the surgery and thought it was too drastic, then when he took the time to learn about it he thought it was our best option. He even came to the seminar and some of the doctors appointments with me. Since I have had the sleeve we seem to be getting along even better then we were before, we are kinder and even more romantic. I think a lot of the change in our relationship stems from the fact that I feel better about myself. I am down almost 40lbs from my highest weight and I feel and look much better. Also I think this whole process added another layer of intimacy to our relationship. It means a lot that he stuck by me and continues to support and take care of me. You and your husband should be fine as long as you are both involved in the process and are open and honest with each other. I know there is some statistic out there about divorce after WLS, but my guess is most of those people had rocky relationships to begin with. That being said WLS does stir up a lot of emotions and if you are not careful I can see how it would be easy to isolate yourself. Just keep if involved, and remember you guys are a team.
  13. Hey cowgirljane, my comment wasn't meant for al people who are not at goal. Floating 5-10 lbs over goal is something to be proud of!!! The only reason I asked the question about why that women wasn't losing weight is because she spoke as if she knew some secret truth. I think her post was inaccurate at best and detrimental to others at worst. I understand that after the first year to 18 months it will be MUCH harder for me to lose weight, I understand this because I did a years worth of research. I would never put anyone down who is trying to lose weight and working their program, but that women surely was not.
  14. The problem here is in your original post you "spoke" as if your experience was factual. Most people do not have surgery two weeks after deciding they want to. For instance it took me close to a year before I was approved for surgery. I had to see a nutritionist for 6 months to learn proper eating habits, I saw a psychologist for 7 months before surgery, and I started at the gym 3 months before surgery, also I did a ton of research on my own. I don't think people mean to attack you personally, but you could be causing damage to some other vulnerable person by creating a post riddled with factual errors. Yes as you said earlier so far you have failed your sleeve, your sleeve did not fail you. So once again, any newbies thinking about surgery realize it's a hard road, and that some people just aren't up for it, but that overall most people are successful, healthier, happy people. I am happy than I have ever been, I am down almost 40 lbs, a exercise more, have more energy, MORE MUSCLE, and actually my marriage has even improved because my husband has taken the time to learn everything with me and support me all the way. Please, please, don't trust this women's ideas of WLS.

Anyone else have very slow weight loss?

I too lose weight in a similar fashion. I lose 4-6 pounds in a week and then I won't lose for the next week or two. It drives me crazy!!! That being said if you averaged my weight loss it would be just about 3lbs a week and I am 27 years old and exercise 4-6 days per week. I don't think you are a slow loser, I think you're doing great. Keep up the good work!!!!
  16. I am sorry, but there is one more thing I need to add: if you are so sure about the right way to lose weight, why aren't you losing weight? You are three years out, if you followed those simple rules you laid out, why have you gained 25 lbs?
  17. I don't understand why the option is to be sleeved and lose muscle or lose weight on your own and be successful or better off. Why isn't the option to get sleeved and exercise intensively so you do not lose muscle mass. Also the entire reason we are given protein goals is to prevent muscle loss. Also you don't actually know the science. You can lose plenty of fat from calorie restriction/ diet. Please, please, please, anyone who is reading this post because you are on the fence about getting WLS ignore this women; she clearly didn't follow the her program.

    i think i have bulimia

First, I would like to say how sorry I am you are going through this, and I hate that you have to experience this amount of anxiety and fear. My advice would be to see a psychologist ASAP. The sooner you break a habit the easier it is. I would also like to add that even if you are throwing up after a binge you will still have consumed at the minimum 50% of the calories, and simple sugars break down very quickly; so it is not an effective tool either. I also want to let you know that you shouldn't actively worry about your stomach stretching, my doctor says that the majority of things said about stomach stretching is a myth. It is very hard to actually stretch your stomach and you will never stretch it back to the size of your previous stomach. I don't know if that lessens your concerns at all. Again, bulimia is a very serious disorder and I do not want to dismiss any of your feelings, but the first thing to do would be stop, immediately, then see a doctor or psychologist, and with regards to your diet, go back to basics: eat protein first, then veggies, the fruit, then other carbs. I hope you find some peace.
  19. I am getting a bit frustrated. A week ago I hit 200.6lbs, but I haven't dropped an ounce since; actually I have fluctuated up to 202 and back down. It's really annoying, because I don't think I am doing anything differently. I was so excited and thought I would definitely be at wonderland soon. Also I set a goal to be under 190 by the time my school starts in early September, sometimes it feels that that goal is unrealistic. I am bummed out a bit. Also we are going camping this coming weekend and I am worried about completely sticking to my diet. I am so worried I will gain wait or something. This trip is supposed to be fun, and it's really the only time I get 4 full days with my husband, but it's already starting to give me anxiety. I just really hope to hit wonderland before Friday. It would be two weeks since I say 200.6. Any ideas, thoughts or advice?

    Stuck Just Above Wonderland!

Good News: Today my scale finally read 199.8!!! I hope this marks the end of my stall and that my weight will start coming off again, at least for awhile. Anyway, I am very happy to see "wonderland" and I know that I will eventually make it to goal (not with a some more complaining I am sure!). I didn't really change much in the way of eating, but I did up my fluid intake even more. I don't know if that's what helped me finally drop or if my body was just ready to. Thanks guys for your help and advice. ????????

    Stuck Just Above Wonderland!

Thank you so much for the advice. I have made some short term goals came for example: exercise 5 x week, hit my protein goal everyday, up my Water intake, keep under 40g carbs per day, and I set a shorter term weight goal - i want to be under 190 by the start of school 9/8. Even if it's 189.5 I would be happy. I have reached all of my short term goals consistently (except the weight one obviously). Do you have any suggestions for other goals I should set? I know I am probably obsessing a bit, but I NEED to get this right. I want to lose all of my excess weight, which means I need to focus and work at it. Also, I get that I am still early in my post-op phase so it is hard for me to really project forward, part of me is still worried I won't lose the weight.

Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015

Hello Everyone!!! I was sleeved June 1st, 2015, and I am doing OK. I have definitely experienced some ups and downs, currently down... My HW was 235, SW 222, and CW 200.6, so I have lost a total of about 35lbs, 22 of which occurred post-op. I have already had a 2 week stall and I am currently in the middle of a stall (since last week). I am frustrated because I feel as if I am doing what j am supposed to: I eat between 650-750 calories per day, I limit my carbs to under 40g a day (have only gone over this about 2 times), I drink 64-100ozof water , I always get all of my protein in 60-80g , and I exercise 4-6 days per week ( High intensity interval training). So I just don't know what I could do to prevent stalls or speed up my loss. Honestly, I would be fine with losing slowly as long as it was more consistently. Oh well, it is what it is and I have to learn to go with the flow. I would love to hear any advice that you guys have. thanks!!!
  23. Hi! Is there anything you guys suggest to be successful after WLS? I really want to lose 85% of my excess weight, which is higher than the average loss from VSG. I was wondering if anyone here can give me a list of things to aid in my success. Not just the basics: fallow your plan, don't eat a lot of carbs, drink water and exercise. Is there anything else you guys suggest to do, specifics? I would love to hear from some successful sleevers. I am kind of bummed out lately cause I have been in the dreaded 3 week stall. I will be a month out tomorrow, but I have been stalled for almost 2 weeks!!! I am trying to keep my hopes up though and plan for success. Please give me some ideas!!!!

Slow loss @ 7 week post op

I am assuming they mean carbs from veggies, dairy, and some fruit. I agree carbs are not the "devil", but sugar is definitely a demon of some kind!!!! I limit my carbs to about 40g per day and I try to keep the amount of net carbs below 25g per day. Just make sure you are eating healthy, real foods, protein first always and you shouldn't have room for any extra carbs.

Slow loss @ 7 week post op

I am 7 weeks out as well, and I have only lost 22lbs since my surgery. You are not losing slowly, that seems normal to me. If anything you might want to avoid just counting net carbs and try counting your total carb intake (including fiber), because there is research suggesting that certain Fiber and sugar alcohols affect glucose levels similar to other carbs. Honestly though you seem to be doing fine. Just think, would you have lost 25 lbs in 7 weeks before you had surgery? I know this is easier said than done because I am still very anxious about my weight loss and I want to do everything possible to ensure that I get to goal. Just make good choices and exercise. I exercise 5-6 days per week, never eat more than 700, and always eat less than 40 grams of carbs (total carbs!), and drink about 64-100oz of Water every day. I do all these things and I have only lost 22lbs since surgery. Unfortunately, part of this experience is learning to go with the flow, even when you think that flow is too slow!!!!!!
