newchange16 got a reaction from ayemeeb in 9 days post op and feeling great!
I posted earlier saying my first two days were rough, not gonna lie but suddenly by day 3 and forward and felt sooooo much better. I am still drinking Protein Shakes and Water and broth and having a bit of yogurt too. Noticing the hunger that comes on is real...real as like before, however the stomach WILL say no after a certain amount of intake..That’s what it’s all about. Feeding yourself healthy things. I’m 10 Pounds down and feel better already. My sips don’t have to be tiny as I had feared, they are normal , just no chugging. No regrets !

I had my surgery this last Monday. I was nauseous overnight at the hospital but fortunately didn't need to receive any heavy pain medication there. I got sick Tuesday night after returning home as I drank to much too quickly (and gagged on the liquid pain medication they prescribed me). By Thursday, I was beginning to realize the burping after drinking was probably a sign that my new little pouch was full. On Friday, armed with that knowledge, I was able to get in almost all of my recommended Fluid and had very little burping. Every day will get better as you start to get a feel for your new body. Just try to move as much as you can, and keep rest as you need it. I'm only 5 days post-OP, but I'm already starting to feel better. Just give it a few more days...YOU'VE GOT THIS!!
  3. Congrats!

Oooh, I hope it gets better for you soon! I have read a lot of the posts on here, and most people seem to say the first 4 to 5 days are the worst. I'm on for Monday, so I have been reading all the accounts I can. Sending healing thoughts!

Are you getting anti-nausea meds? There is also med for stomach cramps, levsin, that really helped me. My pain was OK, but sipping Water caused cramps and my stomach felt like it was flip flopping. I was able to handle sugar free popsicles. It gets better though. Takes a couple of days for me though.

That first night post-op was miserable with the nausea. By the time I got home, though, I was fine. I never had any pain. Glad you're doing okay.

broth is the key and If you have the energy make it yourself - The store bought stuff is loaded with Salt and chemicals - Sip slowly - I found Warm liquids were easier then cold Water right after surgery -

Hang in there, the first few days I was miserable, felt like I had been run over by a truck. 1 week later I was cleaning out a linen closet and a whole different person. Go slow, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.

No regrets. 18 months out, secret sleever. Currently dealing with a 4lb regain, but now i have the control and tools to manage. (Up to 74kg from 72kg, still under my goal weight)

Stay on top of your weight, understand that surgery is a choice and a tool only, it doesnt stop you putting rubbish into your body. You are the only one who can do that. Plenty of idiots blending up mcdonalds to make it fit. Educate yourself and exercise.

The thing is, that this is massive though and if you want to change your life that means it all has to change after surgery and it has to be a life long change.

So glad I did it. Sure there have been odd times when I’ve thought oh if I hadn’t had the surgery I could ... but then I think if I hadn’t had the surgery I’d still be obese.
I was fortunate pre surgery in that I wasn’t diabetic, no high blood pressure, no sleep apnoea or other health issues related to my weight, however, I realise that was all probably ahead of me.
I‘ve had a few hiccups along the way but generally it has been pretty straight forward.
I had some reflux, a very acidic stomach & a lactose insensitivity (thanks to a parasite I picked up teaching in central Queensland). I was pretty successful managing these probs prior to surgery (avoided any food or drink which would aggravate). Post surgery, I don’t think my stomach is anywhere near as acidic, dairy products don’t seem to bother me (the parasite can live in the lower stomach or upper intestines for ever so I wonder if it was removed with my stomach) & my reflux is about the same though I do still restrict my diet. I still get hiccups but no where near as extreme & gurgle a bit but ... shrug.
Regardless if you progress with the sleeve or change to bypass, in the long term you will be so glad you had the surgery.

I don't regret it for a moment. Literally the best thing I could have done. I remember being a week out and nervous as could be constantly thinking "What am I about to do to myself". Honestly, the best advice I could give would be to stop reading the horror stories online. I went in on June 10th 2019. I waited in pre-surgery for what seemed like forever which they gave me Water and Tylenol. The docs came out and told me what was going to happen and then a short while later I was wheeled in to the room. It was chaos, but the nurse who had been with me stayed by my side. I was in the room for maybe three minutes when they said we just gave you something that's going to make you sleepy. That was it. Out like a light. I woke up in recovery and I was sore but not in incredible pain. Still groggy I slept off and on until about midnight when I had the gas pains in the shoulder and neck that I had been warned about.

The night nurse was great, she came and walked me every half hour and every time I walked the pain lessened. I spent most of the night walking, eating Popsicles and drinking water. (I hate Jello but it was available)

Swallowing hurt at first but it was similar to strep throat. Not impossible or agonizing. By noon time the next day I just wanted to go home. I felt okay and was ready to be free from the boring hospital room.

For the first few weeks I slept in a recliner rather than my bed because the incisions were uncomfortable when I laid down. Not horrible pain but nagging enough to keep me awake. My wife set up Protein Shakes in shot glasses in the fridge so every hour or so I would get up and walk around and take a shot. I moved on to Soups and finally that first scrambled egg meal was the best. I ate a lot of single egg omelets with cheese. In fact, my wife says I got so good at making omelets in the first thirty days that she'll put my omelets against any Breakfast joint in town.

The hardest part was coping with not eating with everyone else when I returned to work and social outings. That and staying in clothes that fit. Thrift stores became my best friend as I was dropping a pant size every couple weeks at first.

A lot of people are put off as they feel others treat them differently as they lose weight and it becomes a mental barrier for them. For me, I completely understood because I was treating myself differently. I wasn't the same as I was before. My normal just isn't the same as it was before, but it's better. My quality of life has improved so much since June. I run now. Not like just a little. I run 3-4 times a week. Miles at a time. Before I could barely walk .3 of a mile. My confidence is through the roof and I actually like buying new clothes. I can go out and do things I was afraid to do before. So of course the people around me are treating me differently. I am different.

Will you ever feel like the normal you felt before? Probably not, but if you're like me your normal from before felt pretty bad. The new normal will be worth every second of discomfort and struggle.

P.S. If your surgeons office offers support groups. Do it.

P.S.S Take lots of pictures, you'll regret not having them later as you reach the big milestones.

You'll do great. I was sleeved on 1/8 and had no nausea, and was able to take tiny sips right after surgery with not too much pain. The hospital will take good care of you, and don't be afraid to ask for your pain meds, you'll want to be comfortable so you can walk. The day of surgery and until the following day around noon I was on a Patient Controlled pain pump with dilaudid, any time I had pain I'd push the button and poof, back to sleep. Recovery at home is much less painful, I think I only took the pain meds for 3 days and then the pain was minimal. If you haven't yet, I would say invest in an abdominal binder for post op, I woke up with one on and it helps a ton. I hope this helps a little! Know that you're making a life changing (for the better) step and your family will get to have a happier, healthier, longer living you!

Though I have thorough paperwork - and I know to only have Clear Liquids today...does clear truly mean clear as in NO choc Protein Shake at all today. I have been alternating betw Gatorade Zero and Water so far today. What did you all do? I'm so nervous..mostly for the aftermath of anesthesia because I always get very sick from it ...I have a family, young kids, etc and just hoping after 4 or 5 days post-op I can sort of operate as normal and even attend my children's sports, etc...albeit, sipping liquids for 3 weeks. Any advice or experiences you had are greatly appreciated.

I could have Protein Shakes up until midnight the night of surgery.
I had surgery on a Monday and was taking my daughter to her doctors apt and Walmart by Friday. I definitely was uncomfortable though and learned that I needed some support for the tummy when walking around. See about an abdominal binder, makes being up moving much more tolerable.

No Protein Shake today...but Protein Water would be fine if you have it. Jello is okay as well as SF popsicles and broth.
As far as anesthesia reaction...don't hesitate to ask for anti-nausea meds when you need them. You should be up and around within a day or so...taking it easy. Driving or riding in a car may cause some discomfort with the incisions but again, just don't rush. AND NO LIFTING of anything over a couple of pounds.
You'll only be on liquids for about a week...then you move to pureed soft foods. It will seem like nirvana.
Good luck and you'll soon be on the 'losers bench' with the rest of us.

It is such a personal experience and very personal business. I have been living a very healthy life and eating less, drinking my Protein Shakes and etc. In my office we have maybe 6 wls employees, 2 in my immediate work area that tells everyone all of their business and displays all of their equally bad dietary habits. All of that to say, my coworkers have even more to say because they interact with those 2 and have first hand knowledge of what the process looks like. As much as those 2 get on my nerves, it annoys me to hear people say, "they took the easy way out!" or "you're not losing weight the lazy way like them!!!" I always have to stop those people from spreading false information and for not understanding that isn't easy. To add insult to injury, it's generally another obese person speaking ill of another obese person. Enough of my rant, that just takes me there with anyone. If it were easy, we wouldn't be plagued with an alarming rate of obesity.
Getting back to my point, I've observed my Assistant monitoring my trash and asking me if I've been eating, (wth), staff yelling out she can't eat like us (because I decline), oh you think your cute in your clothes, why are you dressing up everyday, you can't possibly wear that size with all of that rump back there (and took her hand and tapped me on my butt), your getting thin ( I'm not even sleeved yet) being out sick for a few days is good for you--because you've slimmed down and the last one...your slimming down, you can at least say thank you (I didn't ask for a compliment, but thanks) ....This is all just coming from my immediate work area and a small group of women. I will not share my wls with these gossipy mean hens. They are going to speculate and talk crap about me either way, so have it. I have so many other things to contend with in life. I love myself, I'm at peace with my decision and I don't have space in my realm for BS. This is just the people who I work with, I haven't even shared the beliefs from some of my friends, family and guy friends and their negative views regarding wls.
I have one life, one chance and I choose me.💜
How does everyone deal with the chaos or the reactions when people first see you who don't know you've had wls?

I told very few people. I am sure a few wondered, but they have seen me at various weights in the past so it may not have appeared on their radar that I had surgery. A couple I did tell had reactions I wasn't expecting, but hey they aren't speaking to me now, and I don't care anymore.
One thing - if you have fat friends their reaction might be really negative, judgemental, rude, jealousy etc. Take care about who you confide in.

I also only told my spouse, parents, and a few close friends. I’ve heard through the grapevine that some of my coworkers have speculated that I got a lap band (I was actually sleeved), but no one has flat out asked me to my face. Other neighbors/friends have commented on my weight loss, but haven’t questioned it. They do know I am seeing a personal trainer, so they see I am working out hard and watching what I eat. I think at this point I would be comfortable discussing it with a coworker/neighbor/friend if they brought it up to me. What I didn’t want was to hear all the opinions and judgement before hand. It’s a very personal decision and nobody’s business but your own.
