  1. I'm two days out and I'm still really struggling with the gas pain as well. I can burp just fine, but nothing is coming out the other end. I also have TERRIBLE hiccups. They come about once an hour, sometimes when I drink something, sometimes when I'm just laying down, sometimes when I stand up and walk around. There's no controlling them. I'm hoping I'll be able to get some more liquids in once I get rid of all this gas, but I'm definitely not meeting the 64 oz per day goal my doctor set. Maybe half of that, if I'm lucky. I hope you all get to feeling better soon.

  2. Thanks yall, you're both right! I actually went in to my first appointment thinking I would do the RNY, to be told sleeve would be better, and now back to RNY. My doctor warned me today about dumping syndrome and I'm actually grateful to have another reason to keep me from eating all the bad stuff again (definitely don't want to make myself sick!). I think it's just nerves kicking in!

@@caligul good luck tomorrow! Let us know how it goes :)

  3. Hi All-

For the last few months my doctor and I have been operating under the assumption I'd be having the gastric sleeve surgery next week (June 9th). I've done lots of research and feel very prepared to be successful after surgery. However, in my pre-op meeting today we went over my Endoscopy and medical history results and he now thinks it would be better for me to go with the Gastric Bypass surgery because he doesn't want my reflux to get worse.

I fully trust him and his judgement, it was just a bit of a shock for me, especially since it's only one week away!

To be honest I think I'm just overwhelmed that it's all finally happening. Regardless of which organs they stitch together, I just want to make a decision to live a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Any anecdotes or words of wisdom?

    Thanks!
    Brittany

  4. I don't have much of a supervised diet, or even a liquid diet requirement before surgery. So I'm kinda taking it into my own hands & starting to slowly replace meals with Protein shakes. I have YET to find a shake that I think tastes good. I've tried the Lean 25 and Premier Protein Shakes. My friend swears by the ones they sell in bulk at costco, but I'm scared to buy that much and not use it. Any suggestions?

  5. I'm scheduled for surgery June 9th and my doctor doesn't require a pre-op diet. Just Clear liquids the day before surgery. I'm worried about going from suddenly eating whatever I want (pre-op) to only being able to drink liquids for a few weeks after surgery (post-op), so I'm going ahead (with my Drs permission) and slowly introducing Protein shakes into my diet. I'm hoping the week before surgery to just eat one full meal a day and replace the others with fluids. That way it wont be such a HUGE shock to my body, or my mind.

I'm still trying to figure out what to eat for my "last meal"- has anyone else started considering that yet too?

Good luck to those of you with dates coming up soon! Only three weeks left for me!

  6. Hi all-

I had my NUT appointment a few days ago and based on my blood work they encouraged me to start taking a daily Multivitamin, Biotin, and extra B12. I've been doing that for about 3 days and I can't find a way to take them without getting nauseous afterwards. I've tried eating before, eating after, and drinking them with milk. Has anybody else had this problem? I just know if they're making me sick now, they'll most definitely make me sick after surgery when all I can intake is liquids and my stomach is significantly smaller. Any advice?

    Thanks!
    Brittany

  7. Hi All-

I was just given a surgery date of June 9th for my sleeve! I'm very excited, but I feel like it's all happening very quickly. I just started the process two weeks ago. My question is this- I asked my doctor's nurse about liquid pre-op diets and she said that my doctor doesn't have a requirement for that unless he believes you have a "fatty liver" and apparently my blood tests all came back great. She said the only thing I'll be required to do is a clear liquid diet the day before.

Do you think it would still be smart to do at least a few days of the Protein shakes and stuff leading up to the surgery? I'll ask my doctor the next time I see him, of course. But I think it might help me get into the swing of things before surgery- especially considering I'll have to be on all liquids after it's done.

Has anyone else had experience with a doctor who doesn't require a pre-surgery diet?

    Thanks!
    Brittany

  8. Hi @@Seamster44,

I'm 25 and hopefully going to have my sleeve done in early June. I'm in the middle of the process and have the nutritionist and psychologist appointment left and then hopefully my insurance will approve :) I haven't quite decided who I'm going to tell yet. I'm usually a pretty open book, but this might be a little too personal to share with the world. I do take a lot of pictures tho, so I'm sure people will notice such a drastic weight change. How were you planning on handling this?

  9. Hi All-

I just met with my surgeon today, have NUT and Psych appointments the first week of May and then we're scheduling surgery for when my students leave school in June. Thank God for summer time off! I was pretty set on going with gastric bypass, but my surgeon recommended the sleeve- so that's what we'll do. I figure he's the professional :)

I'm 25, located in NC, by the way. No husband, no kids, just a boyfriend who is very supportive and promises not to be upset when my boobs shrink.

  10. Hi @@hanna91! It seems like we're kind of in the same boat. I'm meeting with my surgeon on the 30th of this month, doing tests in April and having my Nutrition/Psychological exams on the first of May. Hopefully I'll be approved to have surgery sometime in June.

I'm young, like you, and worried about the excess skin and exercise post-op. From what I hear, younger people generally have an easier time with skin issues because our skin is more elastic. One of my best friends had Gastric surgery about a year and a half ago, she's down about 100 pounds and hasn't had any issues with skin, but she exercises regularly.

    Gives me hope!

I'm glad to see someone my age on the same timeline as me. Any idea when you might be having surgery?

  11. YES! I am struggling with this now currently. I'm scared of the finality of it all. And what if I end up worse off than I started? I'm also not currently dealing with any comorbidities- but I know that WLS will make me healthier in the long run. I have my consultation appointment in two weeks. I think I'll be able to make a better decision after I've heard from the doctor.

I'm trying to remind myself that there's no use getting worked up about something that I haven't even been approved for yet.

Keep us updated on your decision!

  12. Thank you so much for the honest responses and feedback. That is exactly what I needed to hear. You've all made a lot of good points. My health won't be good forever, and honestly, I'd rather spend more of my life working to develop a healthy relationship with food. If I wait, I'll only add pounds and continue down a road that will allow me to be unhealthy in my future.

Thanks to @@beachgurl for the comments about being a healthy role model for your children. Having WLS would 1. allow me to actually have children (hopefully)...and 2. make sure that I'll be around to see them grow up.

I think I'm just nervous about the whole thing. And deciding to make such a drastic change is scary. Any advice?

  13. Hi All-

My name is Brittany and I'm 25 years old. I'm currently trying to decide if Bariatric Surgery is the right route for me, given my circumstances. Basically, if I decide to go through with it all, I'd like to try to get the surgery done before I turn 26 in October. Until that point I'll have two insurances (through work and my dad-- thanks Obamacare!) and I figured that would be the cheapest way to get it done.

I have my first Doctor's consultation in a couple of weeks and I've been researching the options. Right now, sleeve or bypass seem best for me, but I just don't know. I think once I meet my doctor he will be able to give me his professional opinion on the matter.

I guess where I'm struggling right now is deciding if it's actually something I actually want to do. I've been overweight my entire life and have grown quite comfortable with my appearance. I'm very proportional for my size- and I've always thought of myself as attractive. I actually worry, very vainly, that I'll be less attractive if I lose weight. I'm dating someone who loves my curves and wouldn't change me for the world and I worry that if I lost weight he might look at me differently. (Although I think that's more of a personal concern, because I know he would support and encourage me if it meant I was being healthy).

I have infertility issues and my doctors have told me repeatedly that losing weight will only increase my chances at getting pregnant. I also know that losing my excess fat will make me healthier in the long run. But I'm so comfortable the way I am now. Was anyone else afraid to take that leap?
