You need to track those inches lost. Muscle is much more compact than fat which is where the saying that muscle weighs more than fat comes from. While pound for pound yes it is equal, but because it is compact and based on your workout schedule you are adding muscle. The more lean muscle you have the more work your body will do to burn fat even while resting. The pounds will come. It is frustrating, I was right there with you about a year ago (pre-surgery). It is frustrating because we are all fixated on the numbers. But have faith in yourself, the scale will move and likely a big jump once it does.

It is not considered experimental any longer and hasn't for at least the past year and half to two years. There are actually several well documented papers from Europe in France and Spain where the procedure was introduced. My particular doctor has been perfoming the SADI for over two years with great sucess. It is safer than the traditional DS in several aspects and I do not suffer the side effects of diarehea or gas that most DS patients complain about. While the actual surgery only dates pack to about 2008 the results have been very positive, which is what is important. In medicine it is always about improving the procedures for safety while obtaining the best results. It is just another stepping stone in improving WLS from the old days of stomach stapling.

I don't know the rules in Mexico but for sure in the states a doctor can not discuss details of any other patient with another person, especially without a signed release. This includes cause of death those details your would need to obtain from the patient's family.

I agree wholeheartedly, however, on another support site there were two individuals that no matter what the person said they would respond harshly and negatively on every aspect of the procedure. One of the responses I had here was literally a cut and paste from the other site which contained false information. I don't mind contructive discussions or even if someone disagrees, but I draw the line on spreading fear from non-fact checked information.
One quick edit: You can call me out, and maybe it is a sensitivity thing, but I don't think on a WLS support site you should have to defend your surgery type decision, especially once you've already done it.

ShellMilliner reacted to heidikat72 in The Statistics are not in our favor? (According to my worried Dad)
With all due respect, your father doesn't understand how to interpret statistics associated with potential complications - you don't just simply add them up to arrive at a "total".
If he truly read the article you reference with an OPEN mind, he would have seen that for nausea and dehydration - the article itself even says this is when patients aren't getting in enough fluids. This is why the bariatric programs and the vets on this forum always always always stress how important it is to meet your Fluid intake goals. Seriously, getting in your fluids those first few weeks is YOUR JOB - even if it takes you 18hrs a day of constant sipping, DO IT. Drinking will get easier as the swelling goes down and you can drink more normally (rather than teeny tiny sips). But it is always important to track your Fluid intake and make sure you are getting enough.
As for GERD - it does happen but often is temporary - and most bariatric programs will have you on a PPI for a couple months. You may need to have your dosage adjusted, you may need to stay on it longer - but as long as you work with your bariatric team on this and don't ignore the symptoms, it is manageable.
Gallstones - yep this is a common one. And yes, a gallstone attack can be excruciatingly painful. But you know what? I'd still rather have a couple gallstone attacks and get my gallbladder removed if needed than deal with all the other LIFELONG and LIFE THREATENING side effects of obesity. Oh and guess what, there's a good chance you could end up with gallstones at some point even if you don't have WLS.
Strictures - there are people on this forum who have had a stricture. Perhaps one of them can weigh in here. I believe at least some of them have been able to have it corrected/managed and still don't regret the surgery one bit.
Deep vein thrombosis - a risk with any surgery honestly especially when your mobility may not be great immediately following. This is especially true with obese patients who already have mobility issues and/or aren't active. Many programs assess your risk for this based on your current condition and family history of blood clots. Based on this, it may be recommended to have an IVC filter put in your leg temporarily - the filter will catch any clots that form and migrate before they reach your lungs and lead to a pulmonary embolism. The more common approach is to administer blood thinner injections for a couple weeks after surgery. And to walk walk walk walk walk as much as you can post op - the more active you are, the less the change of a blot developing in the first place!
Nutritional deficiency - this is why you take Vitamins, calcium/vitamin D supplements and B12 supplements. Why you focus on Protein first, followed by veggies then fruit and lastly starches. And why you get your blood work checked regularly post op so that any deficiencies can be treated before they become a problem. For instance on my program, that means blood work at 3, 6, 9, 12 18 and 24 months post op and annually thereafter. Also, with the sleeve you don't have the malabsorption associated with the bypass. Your Vitamin supplementation is due to the reduced volume intake. And I know personally many sleeve patients who once they are a couple years out have been able to cut back to supplementing with just one Multivitamin a day.
I am guessing he thinks the forums are a joke because they don't support his pre-conceived negativity regarding this surgery? What exactly does he think your other options are and what are the "stats" associated with those options? His scare tactics are disgusting. Would he rather your life be shortened and your quality of life be miserable with the obesity? Have you really told him truthfully and completely the impact the obesity has on your life?
At the end of the day - you are a 46 year old woman. You don't need daddy to sign off on your surgery. I understand wanting family emotional support - but if you don't get it, you can still go ahead with surgery. This is a decision to be made between you and your medical team. Is dad willing to go to an appointment with your medical team and hear directly from them? Ask about the complications, how they can be mitigated and what their practice's actual complication rate is? Or is he so stuck in his negativity that he wouldn't listen to the medical professionals either?

Everything that @@CanyonBaby said. You need to remind them that obesity is a disease and it is not a matter of willpower. Tell them the path you are on WILL lead you to an early grave and your biggest desire is to be there for your children (that was my motivation).
Let them explore this site. I believe there is even a section for friends and family. Is surgery risky? Yes, but the risks A. are very low most are rare and B. the benefits of a LONG healthy life far out weigh the any risks.
    Good luck to you.

From what I can tell you, I began taking my thyroid meds in the evening before bed too. They did not work well for me. I now take my meds early morning. I have them set up next to my bed with a small cup of Water. When my husband gets up at 6AM, I reach over and take my thyroid meds. I only do it like this because you are supposed to take the thyroid meds at least 30 minutes to 60 minutes before drinking coffee. When I get up at just before 8AM, I want my coffee right away. But, I have read that you should take thyroid medication in the morning.

    Hi all!
So to start with I've ALWAYS had a tough to manage thyroid medication dose. Although I did have a couple years here and there where my dose would remain unchanged and even lowered on occasion. Since my surgery last year my dosage has required increasing every few months. We switched from Sythroid to Levoxyl and that hasn't made a difference. My last switch was in November to 200 mg Levoxyl with normal in limits blood work in February. I just had blood work last week and my thyroid function is completely out of range again. My TSH is 6.96 with a normal range of 0.40-4.50 while my T4 Free is in range. I have an appointment with my endo tomorrow morning but I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. All of my other labs from both the bariatric doc and my endo are nearly perfect my triglycerides are a smidge high and my D3 is in the low normal range.
I always take my med before bed and the only other medication I take in the evening (within 2 hours) is Singulair and Biotin neither of which I've seen cause absorption issues. My Calcium is in the morning and my Iron mid-day.
Eventually, I am going to max out on the dosage and I'm not sure what that next step is. Has anyone else gone through this?
    Thanks for reading!
    Best,
    Michelle

I got on the scale this morning, and my weight began with a "1". My weight was 319 on the morning of October 1, 2015, and I've been so looking forward to this day! I know that what the scale shows is only a part of the big picture, but the rest of the picture is positive also, and I'm so excited about the changes is my health and self-esteem. I just wanted to share this news, for me and also for those who are newly post-op, or having surgery soon. It feels amazing to say this to people who understand the little triumphs and the feeling that comes with them.

So some people asked for information on "Why Alcohol Is Bad" post surgery. (Particularly directly after)

Most of it has to do with wound healing. As people have said, your stomach has a large 'wound' in it from the surgery. There are many studies which describe the effect of alcohol, however this is one of my favorites. For those who don't have time to go through it all:
"In summary, acute ethanol exposure can lead to impaired wound healing by impairing the early inflammatory response, inhibiting wound closure, angiogenesis, and collagen production, and altering the protease balance at the wound site.
As mentioned previously, the host response to chronic alcohol exposure appears to be different from that of acute alcohol exposure. Analysis of clinical data indicates that chronic alcohol exposure causes impaired wound healing and enhanced host susceptibility to infections, but the detailed mechanisms that explain this effect need more investigation."
Do what you want to do. We are all big girls and boys here, however know the risks and benefits of all of your actions.

No carbs definitely seems extreme. I don't get *many* carbs, since I am always putting Protein first and aiming to reach my 100 grams/day of protein, but if my protein comes with some carbs, I will have them. Plus I do manage to fit in the occasionally treat. I was told by my NUT to never have JUST carbs, always have protein with my carbs, and always put protein first. So if I have a little toast, put Peanut Butter on it. Or have some tuna salad with my crackers... that sort of thing. I will say that I never eat rice or Pasta because they just take up too much room and I can't get my protein in if I have them.
