Aranks got a reaction from IcanMakeit in Abuse of wls..when it's not needed
Honestly I kind of see it as who am I to judge. I don't know the trials they've been through and there was a doctor somewhere willing to endure the risks of performing this surgery. I've heard through this entire process that I don't really need surgery. Even my therapist and dietician didn't believe me when I told them my weight until they I got on the scale. Then was quickly followed by a "you carry your weight very well". Gee thanks! I think most people in their right mind don't directly go to the route of surgery, such a life altering thing, but have tried and failed at things prior. Additionally, many people have other co-morbidities, that will only become more significant if they are unable to get their weight under control. 50 pounds may not seem like much to lose to somebody who has 200lbs to lose but 50lbs is significant and you don't know how they necessarily carry it either it may appear 50 but really be 75 or so.

I think she's just asking opinions about a subject she's been seeing. It's ok to wonder about things, it's ok to have a question and ask what others Think. I'm sure there are people out there that may not have actually needed the surgery but have the money and means to leave the country to Have it done out of vanity...I'm also sure there are surgeons in the world that are all about the money and could give a rats butt wether it's in the best interest of the patient or not. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not sure who these people are she's actually referring to but It's a question of interest and I don't think she's asking to piss anyone off or cause a "riot".

I don't see why it should delay you, you have 3 weeks to kick this bug! Just make sure no NSAID products, but Acetaminophen products you should be good to go with. I wouldn't think it necessary to contact your surgery coordinator unless it encroaches closer to the actual date.

Fifty pounds is not a lot of weight to lose when compared to 150 lbs, but it's still a lot. If I had known when I was only 50 lbs overweight that I needed intervention because I could not lose weight AND maintain it, the choice of WLS would have spared my body a lot of damage. Internal damage to my heart, arteries, and kidneys; external to my joints that are forced to carry around a massive amount of excess weight; and emotional damage to my mind.
I think some people are just wiser and nip it in the bud. Others like me, fight a good fight and still go down swinging in full denial thinking maybe just one more diet will work. And yes, there are probably a handful of folks who have other motives but that type of mentality probably permeates many other areas of their lives as well.

Aranks got a reaction from hco7416 in Anyone use Optifast 800 shakes pre-op and/or post/op?
Being post op you're trying to get as much Protein as possible in as little amount Premiere has seem to be the best for me 30g of Protein with only 5g of carbs 160 calories per 11oz. I also enjoy Pure Protein which is a bit thicker, has 23g of protein and 4 g of carbs and 120 calories per 11oz. My doctor wanted something with more than 20g of protein with low carbs and sugar and not too many calories. Not sure what the amount of carbs look like in Optifast but if it's anything significant your doctor will probably advise against it at least post op that is.

I'll never understand how some people lose their sense of humanity and compassion by their inability to suppress what they think inside to what they say out loud.
No matter how many times it's been done to me over the years, I would never ever think of belittling someone with the power of my words, the way that clerk did with you, simply because I can.
No matter how thin I may get, whenever I have my surgery, I hope I never ever forget what it feels like to be fat. I think it instills in us a sense of decency and compassion that a lot of "born beautiful" people may never possess the gift of having.

That's quite a hike! Are you in New York also? My dad had it done on Long Island robotically. I mean if iit's the nurse in the hotel room peaking your interest who could blame you?! Haha I'm just surprised the distance you have to travel. Just make sure you explore all your options! Personally I'd rather be nearer home than go with the robot if those were my options.

Aranks got a reaction from hco7416 in Exercising Post-Op /
After being released from the hospital I was instructed to walk at least 30 minutes everyday. I'm not permitted to do exercise that is strenuous or involves too much movement for a month after. Also was told to not lift anything for a month (anything more than 10lbs). So at this moment exercise is minimal, I'm only two (2) week post op.

Aranks got a reaction from aclinton16 in Advice for first 2 weeks post-op?
I'm just over two weeks post op (11/28). I didn't have any problems once leaving the hospital really. In the hospital the first morning after surgery was rough (because I was anti pain meds so I didn't want to take them the first night, don't grin and bare the pain, take them!), also had a lot of nausea but just from the anesthesia. Was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon and had my brother drive me all over cause I missed black Friday and wanted to go shopping. I returned to work on Wednesday, would have been Tuesday but that's when my surgeon meets with those who had surgery. I'm meeting my Protein requirements but still working on my Fluid intake (had trouble with that initially but like somebody else told me, you're healing and swollen). Never had any serious gas pains. I got the hiccups once because I guzzled too much Water in one gulp. Really no horror stories. I'm getting tired of liquids but definitely not hungry. So far so good! I drink Pure Protein or Premier Protein shakes (ready made shakes), haven't ever tried Bariatric Advantage. I know lots of people also like Isopure (I did not!). But this whole process is trial and error and find what works and is agreeable to you. :-) Good luck!

I really didn't expect so many different incision sites! I was told I would have a couple more with having my gallbladder out also, but everybody's is so different! Crazy how surgeon's each have their own methodical madness!

No, I don't think so. I hadn't eaten for 12 hours pre-surgery and didn't eat again till the 2nd day after surgery - so 2 1/2 days with no food. There wasn't anything to come out of me. It was 4 or 5 days before it happened. Then it wouldn't stop coming out. Just take some advice, never trust a fart from today onwards.

One more thing to remember is to eat or drink slowly, you're still healing and its going to take time. I got so tired of the Protein drinks that once I got on regular foods, it was definitely easier. Best of luck.

Don't get too discouraged. This will pass soon. Especially when you see the weight coming off. I got really upset with my inability to get my nutrients in and having absolutely no taste bud consistency. Tastes good, then I'm sick of it. That happened so many times. But after 4 weeks out of work being bored , it finally leveled out. It's worth it. I have so much energy. By the way. Remember to walk every day. You'll drop the weight so much faster. I lost like 30 lbs in 3 weeks.

Aranks got a reaction from BeagleLover in How to mentally prepare? Also, what to bring?
    Good Afternoon!
Just know you are doing this for the right reasons. I had mentally prepared myself for the sleeve and found out (2) days prior to surgery my gallbladder was coming out too. That I wasn't prepared for! Threw me in a tizzy. But ultimately as long as you know you are doing this for you, and know this is a 'tool'. It won't change your life it's not a miracle cure, but it will help you change yours. I had minimal support during the process. None of my friends or family would come meet with doctor's with me or go to any groups with me, my boyfriend at the time (now an ex) told me how he would like to tell off the doctor would said I could get this done. But this was for me. I think if you're doing this for yourself, and you've already made the commitment to do this for you, the changes aren't as difficult as one would presume. I had surgery on Friday. You think oh my goodness how a I going to give up everything I love. But you realize that one spoon of unsweetened apple sauce tastes like an ice cream sundae. You're really not hungry. I look at things and say, yeah I'd like to eat that, and maybe one day I will, but I know it will be in moderation.
As far as bringing things with you, bring your phone, iPod, chargers, I was pretty entertained by the television set, I had some good medication and kept dozing in and out. I'd say chap stick, but know my doctor's wouldn't let me use any petroleum products since I was on O2 the first night, so they provided me with a lotion type of tube for my lips. Bring slippers and a robe, or request an extra gown. Walking every two (2) hours sometimes only my dad was in the room and I didn't want him seeing my hind quarters or relying on somebody to tie me every time I got out of bed, so being able to just throw something easily and quickly over your shoulders was great. Also an extra pair of draws! Pretty much everybody wears leaving that they wore in, comfy cozy clothes, but a clean pair of draws when leaving was pretty high on my priority list.
