  1. I converted from VSG to RYGB in October 2020. Recovery was similar, yet different. I had a lot of vomiting following VSG, but less with the bypass. I am one of the 30% who experience dumping, but as catwoman7 explained, it is totally controllable by watching what I eat. In fact, I'm almost 5 months post-op and even the dumping appears to have improved (or I've figured out the triggers!). I can tell you that I don't get that immediate sense of restriction like I did with the sleeve. At this point in my recovery, my body seems to know when to stop eating before I get the pain and discomfort associated with overeating. All I can really offer is my advise based upon my outcome. I am so happy that I had the surgery. Like you, I has the surgery to correct my stomach and esophagus issues. But I've lost 47 pounds, I feel great, I can sleep through the night without acid reflux and I look and feel 10 years younger. Don't let fear of surgery and complications limit your decision to improve your health and daily living.
  2. I've spent the last two days outside landscaping my front yard. It's been pretty physical work - raking, shoveling etc. I felt great both days with lots of energy. I felt certain that I was drinking enough water and eating enough calories. Last night my fingers started cramping and were very painful. Today, I woke up feeling exhausted and I'm definitely taking the day off to rest. I dropped two pounds on the scale over the past two days. I checked my food log and I had eaten over 1200 calories and over 80 grams of protein. Then I checked my exercise calorie expenditure and it was over 1100 calories. So the moral of my story is BE CAREFUL. As I've lost weight, I've felt so much more energy and that's allowed me to be very active. Now I know how easy it is to overdo.

    Super Bummed

I had a revision October 29th last year and started at 185. The first month I lost just about 8 pounds, since it took a week and a half to loose the 10 pounds I gained in the hospital. After that, I started to see a steady drop, but like catwoman7, revision weight loss is definitely slower than the original sleeve. Don't be discouraged, it will level out and the weight will drop. As someone on social media posted - "weight loss surgery is all about making better decisions" - about what we eat, how we exercise and how we view our health!
  4. I had my 3 month (actually 4 month) post op appointment with my surgeon yesterday and he was very please with my progress - no more GERD, 42 pound weight loss and a 24 BMI. He reviewed my lab work and said to just keep doing what I'm doing - one Centrum fruity chew 50+, one sublingual B12, one 65 mg iron and 2 Viativ chews daily. No super expensive vitamin regimen for me - all over the counter and cheap at Walmart! Although my doctor wasn't concerned, my Zinc level is low. I did some internet research and saw that Zinc, like B12, is often low in gastric bypass patients and sublingual supplements may be needed. Does anyone else take a Zinc supplement? If so, do you take a sublingual version? Has the supplement improved your lab results? Overall, I'm thrilled with my health since surgery. I actually sleep without waking up throughout the night with acid reflux, I walk 5-6 miles - five days a week and have tons of energy for working in the yard (which definitely needed my attention)!

    Protein Water

No, I had the same feeling with Protein2O. It had a weird aftertaste and seemed to get chunky after opening the bottle.

    Turkey Chili

I bought a couple orders of turkey chili from Panera and I get the regular chili from Wendy's. I'm 4 months post-op bypass and both taste great, have high protein and work within my daily calorie goals. Since I'm not a great cook, I've found that buying from restaurants provides foods that I actually like and will eat.
  7. Yes, I had a hiatal hernia repair with the sleeve than again when I had the RNY last year.
  8. Unfortunately, I had GERD before sleeve surgery and it got so much worse afterwards. I was no longer abe to control the GERD on medications, so I just had a RNY in 2020 to resolve the GERD, Gastritis and esophagitis. Since October, I've had no more GERD.

    Advice please

I went to a wedding a week after surgery. I brought a Protein shake with me, asked for a glass of ice, and drank my shake during dinner. I told those at the table that I had just had surgery and everyone understood. It wasn't a big deal. As long as your family is supportive, anyone else you meet will understand.
  10. I've been married for almost 42 years and my husband was not in favor of either of my surgeries. I had the sleeve in 2014 for obesity (I had a 36 BMI like your wife) and just had a revision to bypass in October 2020. But in both cases, his concern was directly related to his fear that I was doing something drastic and irreversible for weight loss (sleeve) and GERD (bypass). But I can also tell you that he is very happy with the results. Tells the neighbors how great I look etc. He is very supportive of my eating habits and just thankful that I didn't quit cooking meals just because I don't eat them!! The most important thing you can do for your wife is share your concerns but reinforce that it's her decision and you are there for her both before and after surgery.

    Revision due to GERD

I couldn't get the revision surgery fast enough! I had reflux since 2010, and had the sleeve done in 2014. Never knew that sleeve surgery can actually make GERD worse. After exhausting every medical option, sleeping in a recliner and constantly coughing from the acid erosion of my throat, I went back to my original surgeon who gave me the LINX or bypass options. I didn't go with LINX because it's only been around for 10 years and bypass (gastrojejunostomy for insurance purposes) is considered the "gold standard" for chronic GERD. After GERD was confirmed by testing (including BRAVO), I had the bypass on 10/29/20. Have not had any reflux since surgery. I struggled through the first 3-4 weeks post op, and I am a "dumper", but I feel great. I've lost 41 pounds since surgery, I'm now in the normal BMI range, dropped from a size 16 to size 10 and have more energy than I did before surgery. I think some of the energy is also because I can finally sleep at night like a normal person: no waking up with a hand/mouth full of stomach acid! I did lots of internet research, including articles in medical journals, and the gastrojejunostomy made the most sense for me. And the weight loss is definitely a bonus!
  12. I started dumping not long after I started introducing regular food into my diet - around 6 weeks post op. But it's entirely my own fault since I tend to snack on high sugar items after dinner, then end up dumping during the night. On days when I am disciplined enough to avoid high sugar foods, I am perfectly fine. Not everyone experiences dumping. I just hope that my head eventually gets the message that eating worthless sugary foods is not good for my health!

    Night time eating

OMG. You just described my life. Very controlled during the day, rarely hungry, then I start snacking on crap that has no nutritional value (crackers, cookies, candy) until I finally fall asleep. I always promise myself that I'll do better tomorrow, then another night comes and I repeat the same terrible habit. I'm not hungry, just want the salty and sweet snacks that I have always eaten. If anyone has any good ideas or suggestions on how to calm the angry night beast, please share!

Protein drinks after 6 months PO

I use the chocolate Premier Protein shake to make a daily smoothie with frozen fruit (banana, blueberries & strawberries) and ice. It tastes great, has 30 grams of protein and is much cheaper than buying a smoothie at the chain stores! I've been doing that since my sleeve surgery in 2014, and plan to continue.
  15. @EllaKop What app do you use to log your weight? That's a really nice summary of your weight loss!

    I don’t feel right

Be careful and call your doctor. I ended up in the hospital with dehydration and severe electrolyte deficiency after my sleeve surgery. Spend two days in the hospital getting IV fluids and potassium. I remember feeling so weak I couldn't sit up, could walk more than a few feet without needed to rest. I just kept chugging through it, thinking it would get better until I finally called my surgeon who sent me directly to the ER. You may be perfectly ok, just worn out from surgery and low calorie intact, but don't just assume everything is going to be fine. Call your surgeon and let them decide.
  17. I lived in leggings, same X-Large size, from my highest weight until now. It was only when I went through my closet that I realized the size 18, 16 and 14s pants/jeans were falling off. So I bit the bullet and went to the mall to buy new jeans. Tried on the next reasonable size 12, and it was too big. Settled into a 10, which stretches out with wear and needs a belt, but I am happy to say that the weight loss did eventually end up in smaller size jeans! Don't be discouraged by clothes size. You will hit a point where it seems like you are dropping a size every week. But everyone losses weight differently. And if you're like me, I carried a lot of my weight in my gut area. Be excited about loosing 50 lbs.! Congratulations and keep doing what you're doing - it obviously is working!

    DUMPING SYNDROME

I eat food high in sugar...….I dump! I'm almost 4 months post op RNY, can eat any food in small quantities, but if I eat high sugar foods, I get blotted, terrible gas and then diarrhea. It's like clockwork! My only advise is to carefully monitor what foods cause you to dump, then try (and I say try because it's not always easy) to avoid those foods.
  19. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision and I've lost 40 pounds since my bypass surgery on 10/29/20 (17 weeks post-op). Since my surgery was for GERD and not officially bariatric, I didn't have as much to lose to get to my goal weight. But I want to lose a few pounds more just to give myself some "wiggle" room once I'm past the honeymoon period. I know that weight gain is possible, and very likely probable, after the 1st year. I wasn't really prepared for maintenance after my sleeve surgery in 2014 and gained almost 50 lbs. in the 6 years following surgery. I want to be better prepared to maintain a normal weight since I've been given a second chance to truly change my relationship with food!

    Sleeve to RNY

I had a revision in October 2020 for GERD. Unfortunately, I'm one of the people who "dumps". It's like clockwork - I eat something with high sugar (cake, cookies, candy) and 2-3 hours later I'm bloated, very gassy and the diarrhea starts. I've never experienced any dumping with artificial sweeteners. The good news is, I know what causes it, and it's all my fault! I shouldn't eat that stuff as it has no nutritional value. My surgeon told me that I should learn from my mistakes! Classic conditioning sort of thing...… you eat the wrong stuff, you end up dumping. I'm almost 4 months post op, and I'm trying to change my relationship with sweets so I can maintain my weight loss. The great news is that the GERD is GONE!!!!! I can actually sleep through the night, don't have to suck on a cough drop and eat handfuls of antacids every night and I feel wonderful.

    Strange feeling..... COLD

My doctor told me that the "cold" is because of the rapid weight loss. Our layer of fat (insulation) just below the skin has disappeared due to weight loss, thus feeling cold. I live in Florida and even 70 degree days require a sweater when I go outside! Socks are a must. Gloves and a hat if its windy or below 60. Crazy, but I love it! Sure beats being hot and fat!

    When can I eat steak?

I'm 3+ months past bypass and I've had steak twice. The first time I ended up sick, but the last time I took very small bits, chewed thoroughly, and enjoyed a fillet mignon over 5 days!

    Sugar Free/fake sweeteners drinks

I drink lots of Propel - when I'm not drinking Smart Water. I occasionally drink Diet Coke, but not like I did before surgery. I also look forward to my two cups of coffee each morning with Sugar-free French Vanilla creamer!
