By the way, I can't eat dry food without some small amount of liquid, so I drink a little with meals. It hasn't affected my weight loss or feeling hungry.
All these rules are like being Catholic, you get all the little ceremonies to keep you "holy" but we're all sinners, and a little sin ain't that bad fer ya.

Rovo, that's great. It took me close to 2 years to get to that pace. It sure is nice to have some weight off and feel "strong" when I run instead of winded and nauseous!
Recycled, Don't you actually feel like you want to exercise instead of dreading it for a change? It is good for us sleevers but also somethimg engaging that you want to do. I get lazy like anybody else, but I have the feeling I want the exercise because of how much better I feel afterward. I didn't have as many of those feelings pre-op.

Running....ugh....more power to ya.....I'm not running unless a lion is chasing me. .
I was never much for running and now with two titanium knees.....I do what I can to preserve them. (hence, low impact exercises only)
So, I swim. (like a fish, pool, snorkeling and scuba) As much as I can. I also ride my bike at least 10 miles every day. And even drag myself to the gym too. The sleeve is a great asset, but still gotta do that exercise.....

great work. I just started running (pretty much first time ever) have my times down to a 10 minute mile. heart is no longer pounding through my chest. I can imagine in a few months I will be doing even that much better.
    great work. keep it up!!!

Galfriday--like you, i am not a sweets person pre surgery, but an eat too much person (loved bread). Not having a sweet tooth makes the rules a bit easier I think.
Michigangirl--interesting timing for me on your query. I have been on plateau for 10 days at 202 lbs., but lost 4 lbs the last 4 days. During which time I ate 2 slices pizza, blueberries, extra yogurt, some m and m's at val party. All in moderation. I am insulin dependent diabetic, so usually no fruit or bread.
It is nice not to feel deprived and lose weight. All things in moderation!

I could find few posts on this as i tried to plan my post surgery running program, so i thought i wd post.
I was low fat bmi of 31.5 and could do 5k but no more, 9:30 min pace, left knee pain and tiredness. Still, not too winded for my fatness.
Post surgery, i waited 1 month to start back running. First several runs, i took it easy worried about stomach and energy etc., but felt pretty good with 30 lbs less to carry. Within two weeks i was as fast as my pre surgery 5k time, with more energy and feeling better, only limit was some restriction in breathing "from the stomach" area. That cleared up by second to third week.
Since then, i am now running 8k, 5 miles! Feel great, and running it at 9 min. Mile. I run 5 mi one a week, and at least 3 mi twice a week.
Now i need to do 2 days wk weights, but i have a rotator cuff issue, so will be cautious and no lifting above shoulders.
Still, for 52 years old, doing good. Last time I ran 5 miles was over 20 years ago.

Mostly. I am not great about my Vitamins, but that is mostly due to forgetting.
As far as actually cheating, I take sips from carbonated beverages, and I have had a few carbonated beverages where I have the whole thing, maybe 3 or 4 in total.
I also take sips of Water during meals, but that is due to an electrolyte balance/kidney disorder. I have to be careful though, because if I take too many sips the Water sits on top of the food and makes me miserable.
I was not given a list of foods I was not allowed to eat, other than to watch out for fat and sugar. That's not hard for me, I ate a healthy diet pre-surgery, I just ate way too much of everything.

I am Presbyterian, but I spend most of my Sundays at Mass, my wife being a Catholic. She is Latino, so they are more "relaxed" but still good Catholcs. We gringo's are tighter on rules generally. Me included. I sometimes lose
Patience down in Nicaragua, but usually realize later there is something to be said for being laid back. All Catholcs are impressive from the stand point of their education in their faith.
The Catholics seem to be happy with me, so that's good! Never thrown out of Mass.

As you get further out, you might find you do a little better with dry food.< /p>
But I totally had to laugh about it the rules being like being Catholic. So true! As a born and bred Catholic, that's probably why the rules and following them feel a little non-negotiable to me! I try to follow them best I can, and I feel so guilty when I don't. I guess if breaking the rules equals sinning, then the subsequent weight gain from breaking rules equals the purgatory/hell from sinning, lol! Don't know about you, but morbid obesity felt like hell on earth, to me. I really hated it.

I have caffeine once or twice a week in small doses. A beer now and then, again in moderation.
I run 3 times a week and as yet have not worked out the 5 days I want to, but I'm running hard up to 5 miles. I need to add weights.
I've eaten beef, several small bites. It goes down ok if you chew it well.
I have carbonation a couple of times a week, doesn't affect me--especially if I pour it in a glass. But small sips from a can are fine.
I think it really depends on how you feel. I don't think a little carb or beer infrequently will do any harm--use some common sense and don't get slavish to "the rules", but certainly be careful and don't ignore them either.

I have s friend eho gained s lot after 2 years by loading up on frappochinos and not excercising. I dont see myself doing that. I run occassional 5k races now. Went couch to 5k with a group who are lots of fun.

After the initial confusion over a normal drainage tube issue, i feel pretty good. No real pain, able to walk normally, easy to take fluids with Protein. No gastritis even though I had gastritis pre-op. Just tiredness, so I rest between spurts of getting up and talking with house hosts, reading, some remote work with laptop.
I don't really have much hunger either, although I definitely get hungry after 10 days total on just fluids. I sm a little grouchier, but not a miserable mad dog like i imagined I'd be. No headaches or food withdrawals. Seeing the quick weight loss keeps you motivated.
All in all a lack of drama after the scarey surgery aspect. I am thinking that more people than not probably experience the same but you tend to see the harder cases on the forum?

It is a bit different. I remember first going on victoza i didnt want any food, whereas with surgery i still do but not nestly ss much. I was nauseas on victoza, then developed pretty bad gastritis due to delayed emptying victoza causes; eventually the drug lost its potency for me wnd i got hungry and couldnt lose weight.
My rndo thought it a good first try prior to pulling trigger on sleeve surgery.

I had a very good result all told except for a persistent capillary
Leak at the left port site. No stomach pain, just burping
And mild discomfort. Not much nausea. I expected much worse.
Maybe i benefitted from 5k running program for 1 year prior surgery.
I walk pretty easily, just move slowly. Doc wants me to just
Lie about for rest of day and see if leak wont close.
Nothing life threatening, but might require another scope to
    Fix.
Another thing that saved me is going diet coke to Water joe to
Water the last 2 months. No headaches or malaise post surgery.
Nicaragua is beautiful and fairly cool in Dec. nice to be here
On the mend with wife's friends y family.

Very normal. Commonly done. Your emotional reaction is one I've seen here a lot.
And in five days you'll have surgery.
    And then you'll recover.
And then your life will get much, much better.
    And that's normal, too.
I just read on another thread that the chances of dying from WLS are smaller than dying from knee replacement surgery, which is also "elective" surgery.
One final thought: I wouldn't give those "goodbye" letters to the kids before surgery. They don't need you to scare them to death. Keep doing what all parents have done since the dawn of time: Fake it.

I was a total emotional eater/binge eater too. Any time I felt like I HAD to loose weight, it seemed like I just ate more out of resentment. I went to Mexico for surgery and here's the thing. Once you have the surgery, you really have no choice but to change your relationship with food. Can you still fail? Probably. But, the restriction and recovery in the beginning make eating too much food or the wrong food physically impossible. So far I haven't even been tempted to try to eat things I shouldn't eat yet. Even when I take one extra bite of the foods I'm allowed to be eating, I end up immediately regretting it. I am hopeful that by the time I am recovered enough to be able to handle eating more than I should or eating the wrong types of foods, this time without binging and indulging will have broken me of the habit. They say it only takes 21 days to break a habit or for new ones and I am now almost 6 wees post-op.
Will I face demons down the road? Probably. But I know I will never ever again be able to eat an entire large pizza in one sitting, so that's already a huge improvement over my old behavior.

    Hi there,
I'm a type one. I'm almost 5 months out from surgery. My A1C is a 5.9. Diabetes is well controlled. Work with your Dr,'s and Dieticians. Each of us will experience WLS and diabetes differently.
I used two types of insulin before surgery. I'm now taking one at a much lower dose. I am experiencing lows. My dietician has added carbohydrates to every meal. I eat my Protein first and a small bite of potato. I work out about an hour and a half six days a week. I now eat a small amount of carb's before and after I work out. It has kept the lows away. If my blood sugar drops rapidly I drink watered down orange juice or a glucose tab.
My family Dr. is amazed at what this surgery has done for my health.

my endo and i discussed this, and she wants me to cut my basal right away and just bolus as i need while i'm home recuperating and figuring out what the new norm is. i'm feeling very comfy with that suggestion. i use a CGM also, so i will do my best to keep me at a safe and comfortable reading.
i really don't think being a Type 1 will cause us to lose slower, even though it's really hard to lose weight as a Type 1 normally. i think our more stable blood sugar will help us there.

Thanks, Jessi. I agree--if you're too ill to eat glucose tabs or drink juice, I guess you could do a glucagon shot, but I've never done one before. I need to ask the Endo. I had an appendectomy a few years back and healed well--even if I wasn't in perfect control. I think we'll be high sugar several days after surgery b/c of the trauma, but it should resolve fairly soon.
I was interested, too, in the relative difficulty in losing weight as a type 1 versus type 2 or non-diabetic. I'm pretty active (run 3 miles at a time, 10 min. miles) and hope that helps. It took me 1.5 years to get from couch to that! I hope that helps with the healing. One of the few times you'll have me admit my (nagging) wife was right, but she's often awesome. She runs with me, which helps.
I have also gotten off diet coke which was a 6 can habit; drink Water joe instead and then just Water. That was tough, but doable, since I didn't come off caffeine. I think post-op I am going to have one shot of water joe to avoid headaches, then rest of day water or flavored water, for hydration.
I guess with my pump settings, I'll wait until the sugars come down from the trauma, then shoot for about 1/2 normal basal, and go real low on bolus, maybe just bolus an hour after eating to make sure don't go low.
What a complicated life we lead!
