CafeCathey got a reaction from BLERDgirl in Vegetarian sleevers? what do you eat?
This coming Tuesday I will be four weeks out from RNY surgery. I have been using the Orgain Protein Shakes which are vegetable Protein. I mix those with almond milk and add fruit to them every morning. I also use the Orgain high protein shakes, which are organic whey protein. I have made lentil Soup and a vegetarian chili, in the chili I used an organic meat substitute that did not contain soy or wheat. I have felt very good and have not had any issues in the bathroom.

I'm vegetarian. I've been adding a bit of spinach to whatever I eat each day . I ate a salad a day before my surgery and drank plenty of Water. I never ate processed food. I was super regular. Going 2 -3 times a day or more. I was discharged on a 30 day supply of stool softeners. I've been going each day but it's not as robust as it once was. I figure part of it is I'm eating so much less. Once I started adding back in my leafy greens, my once a day felt more robust.

I eat eggs several times a week to keep my total serum Protein level up so I can continue to donate plasma.

Sorry slasherms, I disagree. I don't think many people on here are advocating no veggies, even if they're following a low carb plan. For most people, their surgeons told them to do Protein first; subsequently, that's what most people do. So you talk about carbs--as in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains--being good, but in your example of people avoiding carbs you name crackers and red wine. I haven't come across anyone in any of the forums advocating a 100% Protein, zero carb diet. The "low carbers" seem to be advocating not eating processed carbs like white flour and sugar--but even the "carbers" seem to avoid!
As for your last statement, here's why I disagree. If you can handle moderation, then my hat's off to you! I'm jealous. Me? I've learned that I cannot handle it. I've learned a lot about myself through this journey, and one of the things I've realized is that the whole reason I got WLS is so I could eat whatever foods I wanted without being fat. Moderation, small portions of the foods that I loved without guilt or shame or overeating, was my DREAM. But it's taken a long time for me to realize that that's never going to happen for me. I'm more of a food addict type, and when I eat certain things like sugar, it causes intense cravings and a desire for more and more. Then I overeat, regret it, feel ashamed, eat more, hate myself for eating something "bad", etc. Same cycle as before my surgery! Just smaller portions and a lower weight. It's taken a long time for me to come to terms with the fact that for me, moderation doesn't work.
But I've also learned that everyone's different. Just because moderation doesn't work for me doesn't mean it's not right for others. I am so jealous of the people who can indulge at a party without spinning into a shame-filled cycle and weeks of bingeing (like me!). I wish! I'm glad you have no issues with carbs and think everyone should strive for moderation, but I don't think it's right to put that on everyone. People need to do what's right for them, and everyone's different.
By the way, I eat about 3 cups of raw and/or steamed veggies a day. Absolutely no added sugar, not even on my birthday.

I'm new to these forums, but I've done quite a bit of reading regarding post-op diets. My understanding from my NUT, and my surgeon is that the post-op diet is not intended to be "low carb." That is very clearly stated in my educational paperwork. However, so many threads seem to just freak out over eating ANY carbs...even claiming to gain x amount of pounds from eating a cracker, or stalling for weeks because they drank a glass of wine. Quite frankly, it starts to read like a pro-ana website sometimes! I thought this surgery was not only a tool to help us loss weight, but also to help us develop a healthy relationship with food. By all means, eat HEALTHY, eat CLEAN, eat WHOLE FOODS. These include complex carbs found in veggies, fruit, and whole grains. Now, I admit I'm only 2 weeks out of surgery, so maybe my views will change, but I do not believe that we should punish ourselves. Learn moderation, not abstinence!

I never had a problem with constipation but I am vegetarian. I was put on a stool softener 2 x's a day for the first month. Thinking back to my pre-op days what made a difference was green leafy veg and plenty of Water. As mentioned try to get in a salad each day and drink plenty of Water. even then you may need to take a stool softener regularly.

I never had any problems digesting my wonderful fruit, vegetables, nuts and Beans, with an occasional bite or drink of grass fed, hormone free animal products.
For me, weight loss was quicker with out animal foods, plus digestion is easier. However fish, depending on how it is cooked digest very well. I try to focus on anything that grows from the earth, and I can not go wrong.
After my surgery, I tried to get into the Protein diet everyone kept on talking about. I did not work for me because it was too complicated for me. Instead, focused on getting as many green foods into my body as possible. That meant juicing a lot to get enough vital nutrients my body needed.

Had my RNY bypass on Tuesday 10/14/14 @ 10am and was released to come home Wednesday @ 5pm. I was not in any pain after surgery and was able to do 4 laps around the nurses station about 2 hours after surgery. I had a drain which the Dr. removed before discharge. I have only been drinking Water and Protein Shakes. So far 2 shakes a day for about 47-48 grams of Protein. My water intake has been right around the recommended 64 ounces. Still using pain medication for slight abdominal discomfort, once or twice a day. My Dr. appointment is Monday and at that point I should be able to move on the soft food.
Even with all the information out there I still seem to have so many questions! Everyones experience seems to be sooooo different. So far everything for me is going well. (and I did just knock on wood).
