Starvation mode doesn't apply to people who have extra fat on their bodies, and certainly not for people who are obese. Its a weight loss myth that has been beat to death. I know giving up our food is hard psychologically, but you need to give up control of it at least a little bit to make this surgery work.
I got to my goal weight because I kept my calories low for the whole first year (around 650 to 800 per day), while those in my cohort (support group) who were of the "starvation mode" mindset and increased calories and exercise are still considered overweight, and not by a narrow margin. You will not die, you will not starve to death. Your fat is there to feed your body in times of famine. If you want it to come off your body, you have to decrease intake and force your body to use its energy stores. Your calories need to come from your body, not from your plate.

You need to speak with someone who can help you get to the root of your eating issues.
With me, I have found that avoiding ALL sugar, flour, potatoes, rice, Pasta, starchy veggies & bread and focusing on non-starchy veggies and lean/fat free Protein has eliminated cravings.
Good luck, I hope you are able to get back on track. It will be tough at first, but once you get over the hump it should get easier.

robga999 reacted to JerseyCityGal in 4 weeks out. Depressed and questioning my choice.
If the only thing you have or ever will love in life is "fast food", then yeah, you made the wrong choice. Is eating all you ever did? You can still eat all day long, all day, every day and get back up to your pre-surgery weight in no time at all. That way you won't have to keep telling people that your small portions won't be "forever", although I can't imagine why they would care. Eat those "normal" portions that got you up to 269 lbs! It will take you longer to consume, but you can do it!
Or you could start exercising, read a couple of good books on nutrition, take a healthy cooking class, make plans for the future, get rid of things in your life that aren't working, search the internet for recipes that fit in your surgeon's meal plan, find a new hobby to keep yourself busy, join a gym, take a walk....
Or think about life at a McDonald's with a kid's meal and pout.
    Your choice.

Get over it! You didn't put this weight on in a few months, why do you think you'd lose it that fast? You weigh the same as you did in high school for shit's sake! You have been given one of the greatest opportunities of your life and you are whining about it?!? Not sure what kind of expectations you had, but you may want to re evaluate and learn how to be happy with any loss. No one is immune from stalls, and this was just the first of many.
Just as a comparison, I had lost 17 pounds in the first 7 weeks postop and I was thrilled. Then I gained 3 pounds and sat there for a month. I was STILL thrilled because I knew I had a lifetime of losses and gains in front of me, but never would I be as fat as I once was. Just relax, be patient and enjoy the changes ahead, no matter how fast or slow they come.

I heard that dr doesn't want you to drink because they don't want you to trade one bad habit for another.also alchol tends to make you graze.thats what happened to my friend a year after her bypass she started drinking a lot after she lost over 100 lbs and also added junk food while she was drinking.needless to say shes a sloppy drunk and gained back more then half her loss and is now going for the lapband.

im over 5 years post op... and at first when people would say that, it would hurt my feelings. Now it's a whole new ball game... When someone dares to say that WLS is the easy way out ... I turn to them and say Oh really, tell me what you think you know about WLS.... That normally catches them way off guard. I love watching them back stroke.... Then i say.. Well, im free tomorrow for you to follow me around and if it's so easy, you will have no trouble adhering to all the rules that i have to..... Such as... No drinking with meals.. EVER!! No straws... small plates, small utensils, chewing and chewing till your jaw hurts. Eating so slow that by the time your finished it's all cold. to just name a few. then at 5 you can come to the gym with me and exercise...
if that don't work i just tell them to "f" off and mind their own damn business.

I told 2 very close friends at work. Didn't even tell all my family. I wanted those who I knew would support me 100% to know and that's it. I've dieted several times and lost 50lbs each time to only gain back 60 and 70lbs. Obviously, unless I wanted to eat cardboard the rest of my life, I needed help. And I did just that. Not for anyone else but me.
It's always so easy for others to judge.....again, walk a mile in my shoes.

robga999 reacted to FrankyG in Husband is so negative about my Weight Loss Surgery :(
I think one of the other things to bring up is the fact that long term, dieting just does not work, especially for those of us that get into the "clinically obese" category, since our bodies just seem to be great at hanging onto fat better than others... and cravings, deprivation and exhaustion tend to throw us off the wagon easily.
Gastric sleeve surgery is a tool that allows you to take back control - of your portions and cravings - to give us the ability to make better food choices while limiting the portions of said foods. You still have to eat better/healthy foods (which becomes MUCH easier when you're not feeling ravenous all the time) and exercise.
While some may say it is an extreme measure, I feel like for the sake of my health, it was the great decision rather than remaining grossly obese and dying young, with some periods of intense struggle and frustation trying to lose the weight (and keep it off and failing).
What is wrong with getting help with something you've struggled and failed at on your own? Why on earth would you not accept the help that the surgery provides if you have the ability to get it done? Is it some sort of punishment that you should remain fat forever just because you lack "willpower/self-control" according some judgemental person(s) that have no idea of the struggles that a long-term obese person goes through?
And I had no outstanding health problems yet either. Great blood pressure, excellent choloesterol... on paper if you covered up the weight number, I look fantastic. But I'm not going to stay that way carrying this much weight around. And there are very, very few fat people that make it up to their 70s or beyond. I plan to fully enjoy myself for a very, very long time.
So sure, anyone could diet and exercise and take off the weight for a little while, as long as they monitor their food, portions and exercise - basically let that stuff control their lives - or you could introduce the surgery to level the playing field to that of a normal-sized person that can maintain their weight through regular portions and activity. Then you can adjust your diet and get in your exercise and your body won't be fighting you anymore - you'll be on the same team.
I'm so glad your husband is communicating with you about the surgery and he may even come around to the idea of doing it himself. It will not be easy. I think most of us have had issues at some point in the process. But for myself, I'm just over 2 months out, and pretty thrilled with the results and don't have any regrets in doing this.
Keep talking to each other, discuss those fears and worries and really listen to what each other is saying. I think he was just balls-out scared for what this means for the future, and also pretty worried that you would lose so much weight that you would leave him/and feeling judged himself. He couldn't possibly think you should stay fat for the rest of your lives, but sometimes the gut reaction to drastic change is "he!! no!" and to get mad. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is scary - and I do hope the two of you are able to work things out so you both are able to get healthy together and share many, many decades together and see your children and grandchildren grow up.

You are at a plateau. Don't stress to much. My longest plateau was a month long. They happen. You are only 3 months into it. The good old saying...."Trust the process". Your body is adjusting to it's current loss. During this time, even though you won't notice lbs disappearing, the inches will be. Hang in there!

Don't beat yourself up. I have yet to do the surgery but you are not alone in this. There are alot of people in your same position right now. i have watched tons of youtube videos about it and read forums where other people are going through the same thing. Just stay active and following the diet to a T and everything will be fine. I have noticed many people hidding their scales because they become consumed with the numbers.

robga999 reacted to VSGAnn2014 in anyone hear about an age limit for sleeve surgery?
I had VSG surgery at 68. I'm now 69. Doing great.
A guy in my surgeon's pre-op classes was 73, and he has had bypass surgery and is doing great.
I know at least 3 people online who had VSG surgery after age 70. They're all doing wonderfully.
Honestly, I think older people have a real advantage dealing with the changes required after WLS. We're very dedicated to finally beating the beast that has stalked us all our lives. Most of us are motivated by significant comorbidities or health hazards that challenge our ability to enjoy life. As older people, we've survived some tough things that life throws at you and learned how to roll with the blows.
    We are not whiners.

I was 70 & I had to get permission from my Internist/Cardiologist & my Pulmonary doctors. They both were very supportive of my decision & are very happy with the results. I've been able to quit using a CPAP & have been able to cut down on the oxygen levels for my home concentrator & portable oxygen tanks. My Internist/Cardiologist has had other patients over 70 that had the Sleeve & have also done very well with it.

As with most things involving these surgeries, individual docs will have different views and practices on this point (as will insurance companies!) My doc has had several patients well into their seventies (and most of them had the more complex and invasive DS.) Patient health and prospective outcome seem to be more important than a simple age number - some younger patients may be rejected because of significant health problems that preclude surgery while older ones are fine for it. You find similar considerations and discussions regarding very young patients.

I am 10 weeks out and I can honestly say this is the best thing I have ever done for myself! It hasn't been a walk in the park everyday, some foods my stomach hates now but I know it's just part of the process. I am down 55 lbs so far. It amazing to see the scale go down consistently.
