As I have wrapped up all the pre-surgery appointments and am awaiting insurance approval, I've been wondering how spouses/SOs have done during your journey. Has he/she lost weight along with you because of your lifestyle changes? Or have they gained weight for some reason? My husband is very supportive of my decision so I'm hoping he, too, will benefit from my journey.

I'm sorry to hear that you have not fared well since surgery. Hopefully, things will begin to turn around for you soon.
I've been drinking powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein shakes 2x/day since the beginning of May and have let him taste various ones to see if he'd like it and maybe jump on the band wagon. Just today he emailed me to say he'd tried the vanilla with some extra flavoring and liked it. Time will tell. We love each other regardless of what our weights are. He's been totally supportive!

My husband has been extremely supportive of my surgery decision. He has not only assisted in my recovery care but, has benefited greatly from it as well. While I have lost about 45lbs or so, he has lost 30lbs. He has changed his diet to pretty much mimic mine. Since my surgery, we share Nutribullet smoothies, eat lean, low fat meals, etc. I could not be more happy and, he's just as happy to be in clothes he has been in for YEARS!

Pagie, I know its hard, but you are back here now, and asking for help. This is a good place to be! eat a nice Protein dinner, then get to the kitchen and start getting rid of the food you know you shouldn't have. If you have family that eat it, put it someplace for them and set some ground rules. Use your MFP every day, plan Snacks (three of them if you have to!)... lay pout a couple of days of eating plans to get you off the ground. You still have a tiny tummy, you can still use it. I know its hard to get back into a routine, but maybe you can up your walking or use an exercise dvd in front of the TV or something to get you back moving. Use the old rules, protein first, no drinking with or after meals. Take your vitamins.... and come here for support! We are here for you!

Over 2 1/2 years out from Lap-Band surgery and my wife has dropped 19 lbs to 134 on 5' 3" frame. Both of us are enjoying a much better healthy eating lifestyle.

During my 2 week pre surgery diet, my fiance drank shakes with me and did indeed lose weight. Today I am 5 weeks post op and have fared very badly. He has been by my side and cared for me every step of the way.
I could not have asked for a better man to be my future husband.

@@Pepper123, I've never heard of having it done the way you did. To be honest, I wonder how accurate it is. Every time I had a sleep study, it was with a sleep specialist with a lot of electrodes and analysis.

Do whatever your body is up to.
When I woke up after surgery, as soon as I was steady on my feet, I would take a lap around the nurses station. at a slow hobble, hanging on to my I/V stand, the walk took me up to 10 minutes. I went back to the room, sipped on some Water, put my compression boots back on (by myself), took a nap, woke up, took the compression boots back off, went to the restroom and walked again. This was my routine until I was released the next day.
Unless you pass out and fall, I dont think there is any limit, or too much. There was a few times I had to stop and lean against a wall for a couple minutes, but after a brief rest I continued.
Then when you get home, just do whatever you need to do. Go fix your own food and drinks. sponge bathe yourself, ect. Prior to surgery when meeting with the surgeon, the doctor looked at my wife and told her in a stern voice, "Dont baby him".

My pre sleeve EGD was done last week and I was certain it would be a routine scope with nothing to show for it. Boy was I shocked when the surgeon came to talk to me in the recovery room. He found gastric polyps, a large ulcer, and gastritis. Biopsies were taken of the polyps and other areas of my stomach and esophagus and i am still waiting for those results. He told me RNY is absolutely not an option for me because they would never leave the remnant in when it can not be easily monitored for changes. So I am definitely a sleeve patient! I also have to take a medication 4 times a day to help coat my stomach and protect it and also have to take a PPI every night to reduce the amount of acid in my stomach. He discontinued my anti inflammatory medicine that I take for my bad back. I am shocked because I never had any idea I might have an ulcer or anything else going on. The moral if the story is never think any of the pre-op process is a waste of time or money. The pre-op process is there to give us all the best chance possible to be healthy and successful!

I can relate to your feelings. I was sleeved 12/10/2013 and on 12/14 was rushed to the hospital and almost died (BP was 60/25 and EMT could not get IV in me). I had internal bleeding and had a second surgery 12/15. For about 2 months I regretted having the surgery in a very big way and thought I would never change my mind. At about 3 months out I began to feel really great and my regrets disappeared quickly. Now at 8 months out, down 139 pounds which was my goal, I can confidently say that I would do the sleeve again without hesitation even if I knew about the second surgery ahead of time. Be patient and follow all prescribed instructions. Things will get much better ...

I'm so sorry you are having complications! I was on Clear Liquids for 10 days and regular liquids 10 days after that. I couldn't imagine trying to eat. Do they think you ya be just really swollen from surgery preventing things going down? I hope you don't have to bypass and they can figure out the problem soon
I'll say this though, hopefully a bit encouraging, even the few of those who have had severe complications eventually were happy they had the sleeve. I think it's like aweful childbirth that doesn't go how you want and leads to more surgery (which I had). Lol. Eventually you are glad you did it

I was sleeved on 8/4 and spent extra time in the hospital because I was unable to keep Water down and had constant dry heaves. I've had anesthesia several times in recent years and have never had nausea, so this was definitely sleeve related. I second guessed my choice a million time in those days. I had every kind of nausea medicine, and finally got some relief from Xanax, of all things. Even now almost two weeks later, things don't go down well...I'm certainly not yelling "love my sleeve!!!" Like most people I see on here. But this is my journey, and I am determined to see it through. Hang in there and just take it one day at a time. Don't give up yet, we all have our own journey.

I can't speak for anyone else, but right up to the minute I walked into the operating room, I kept thinking "I can leave now!" I think it's pretty normal to be nervous or unsure about making a change.
From the other side, it was well worth it. I feel about 1000% better already, only 4 months after the surgery. Good luck tomorrow and keep us posted!

Don't feel bad...it's the best money you will ever spend. Rest, listen to your body, within a few weeks you will feel more empowered and in control than you have ever been. It's a true gift, the weight loss fight is over - you still have to exercise and make good choices but fighting it is over

You're no different than lots of other folks on this site. Hell, if we could control what and how we eat, we wouldn't need WLS. Tell the truth to the NUT and let her know you are having a great deal of difficulty sticking to her suggestions.
Sounds like you are having some food funerals. I had them...lots of them. I thought I'd never be able to eat certain things again so I ate like there was no tomorrow. Once I got banded though, I followed the instructions to the letter and when I started to lose, that was great incentive to stick to the plan.
It's been over 18 months now and I'm smaller than half my size and happier and healthier than I've been in years. Don't let this setback derail you.

JenSul I have done the same thing - then I have to spend the 2-3 days prior to my doctor's appointment watching everything that goes into my mouth so I can at least show a 1 pound loss for the month. I think it has something to do with our emotions - like eat it all now because after surgery you won't be able to eat any if this stuff (even though we know down the road we will be able to eat anything we want to in moderation).
I am trying to reign it in and some days I have more luck than others. Good luck .

Hi! I just had my surgery on July 28th and have been blessed with an uneventful recovery. I stayed one night in the hospital, came home exhausted but with minimal pain. I had a friend stay with me for a few days post op( single mom with a special needs daughter) and after the first day home she did very little for my care, but was great to have here for moral support. I started driving 2 days post op, as I was off of pain meds then. Once I was able to start full liquids(day 4 post op), I had a lot more energy.
As far as I'm concerned, this has been much easier to recover from than previous surgeries that I've had. Now if I can just get the hang of eating slowly, I'll be golden.
    Good luck to you!

I had read on here about shoulder gas being caused by the residual CO2 rising up to the shoulder area. I asked my surgeon at my final pre-op visit how he manages the shoulder gas, and he said he will extract as much as possible. I was so glad I asked, because I did not have that problem at all. Your doctor may look at you with the side eye, but it's worth asking.

I agree with the recliner suggestion. Because of spinal issues, I have one of those lifting recliners...oh so handy. The only postop pain I had was from the largest incision, and using the recliner helped to reduce opportunities to pull on it.

Since I am retired, I did not have to worry about going back to work or having toddlers around the house. But I will tell you that for the first couple of weeks, I did tire very easily. I would be puttering along and then suddenly hit the wall.

I was on full liquids the first week home, and then on purees the second week. I tried baby food, but it was easier and cheaper to just put a meal in the blender with some broth and make my own. The third week I was able to move on to soft foods, and by the end of the fourth week I was allowed to have solid food.
So yeah, take a week minimum, but I would recommend two, just to get your bearings and see how your recovery is going to go. For sure, Water is just weird post-op. It needs to be infused with Crystal Lite, or Gatorade or Vitamin Water or something. Good luck with your surgery. let us know how it goes.

my entire thing was uneventful also! surgery was textbook, pretty easy recovery and so far so good, 6 wks later. have not had one episode of nausea or vomiting, ever.
i too mostly took pain meds just to sleep.
honestly i had put off having surgery last year because i chickened out. if i had known it would be this easy, i would have done it then, hands down.
i did a TON of research prior to my surgery, read thousands of threads on here. read 5 different books on sleeve that i downloaded to my Nook. talked to all sorts of patients. i feel like i went in VERY educated and prepared and nothing so far has been a surprise.
i feel AWESOME and like a new woman and wouldn't change it for anything! good luck

I started writing up a list of things that were worrying me about getting surgery and this came out. My wife was impressed enough she suggested I share it and it's probably what I'll put up on Facebook as a way of letting people know what I'm doing.
I'm scared I'll fail. I'm scared I'll go back to my old eating habits. I'm scared that my last chance won't work I'm scared because I don't know what being a normal weight is like. I'm scared I'll be judged for getting surgery I'm scared I'll miss food so much I'll get obese again I'm scared that I won't be able to keep up the changes I need to make over the long term. I'm sure if I don't do this I'll be dead by the time I'm 50 I'm sure I won't be the best dad I can be if I quit now I'm sure I won't be the best husband I can be if I quit now I'm sure if I don't do this nothing will change I'm sure I'll still be discriminated against if I don't do this I'm sure I'll still avoid friends and functions if I don't make a change I'm sure I'll still be ashamed of myself for letting things get this way I sure I'll never climb another mountain or hike through the bush if I stay as I am. I'm sure I'll keep missing out on a big part of life I'm sure I'll never do the things I want or have the adventures I've dreamed of if I keep on as I am I'm tired of being tired I'm tired of being afraid of others opinions because of how I look I'm tired of being in pain all the time I'm tired of letting what I weigh determine how I can live I'm tired of being the joke I'm tired of being a disappointment I'm tired of being judged I'm tired of making excuses I'm tired of lying to myself I'm tired of being obese. I can do this.

I get dumping syndrome if I eat something too surgery. That's not to say though that I haven't had a treat every now and then. For example, if my family goes out for ice cream, I may share a scoop of vanilla with my son- share being the operative word. I found out the hard way that more than 3 spoonfuls of ice cream will get me sick. Sorry about the tmi you're about to read, but I suddenly get dizzy, sweaty, and feel like I have diarrhea and need to vomit. I literally almost fell on the floor waiting in line for a bathroom at a busy mall because I ate a little too much ice cream and feeling this way came out of no-where. I'm actually glad that I feel so bad- it keeps me in check. You'll learn your limits too. Probably the hard way like me lol. Try watermelon- it's sweet and mostly Water. It satisfies a sweet craving without making you sick.
