MrsSugarbabe got a reaction from Bandista in How has your husband/wife/SO fared during your WLS journey?
Bandista, my hubby expressed a similar concern about what might happen after I lost a lot of weight, and I assured him I with him till death do us part (his first wife lost weight and left when other men tempted her). We've been married 10 1/2 yrs. (my 1st and only; his second). We're two peas in a pod. That's a great idea about the party arrangement! Love the "delicate eater" description. I'll have to borrow that phrase in the future. Thank you for sharing!

As I have wrapped up all the pre-surgery appointments and am awaiting insurance approval, I've been wondering how spouses/SOs have done during your journey. Has he/she lost weight along with you because of your lifestyle changes? Or have they gained weight for some reason? My husband is very supportive of my decision so I'm hoping he, too, will benefit from my journey.

Dragonfly1111: Thanks for the warning re: Isopure (you and several others). When you tried the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury strawberry sorbet did you mix it with lemonade or something else? It's not my top favorite, but I do like it in lemonade and drink it occasionally. For lunch at work, I frequently drink the chicken Soup (watch the Water temp!) and for Breakfast I will mix one serving each of the vanilla and chocolate splendor with skim milk and add a little room temp brewed coffee for a mocha shake - this is my favorite so far. I've also mixed in a banana with the vanilla PP and skim milk which is delicious. I wish you luck in finding a beverage that works for you Wouldn't it be great if there was one place we could go to try samples of all these things before we bought it?

unjury is quite nice and no issues at all. i used it a lot.
i THOUGHT i would tolerate Isopure after having a couple sips but after 1./3 bottle felt like i was going to gag. Honestly Isopure reminds me of those New whey shots, just in a huge amount. I couldn't tolerate it AND they are pretty costly too!

@@MrsSugarbabe I like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard and Jay Robb Protein powders, as well as Syntrax Nectar. They are all whey isolate and have great numbers and lots of good flavors. Many people like the Syntrax nectar fruit and tea type flavors because they mix with Water and are thinner - easier to drink after surgery. Also those flavors count as "clear liquids" if you are required to do those for a while. I personally prefer the Syntrax Nectar Sweets flavors that mix better with milk - chocolate truffle, double stuffed cookie, latte Cappuccino, and vanilla bean torte.
    Jay Robb samples:
    http://www.jayrobb.com/protein/whey-protein-samples.asp
You can get samples of Optimum Nutrition and Syntrax Nectar here:
    http://www.nashuanutrition.com/store/protein-powders/protein-powder-samples-1-serving.html
They don't have all the Optimum Nutrition flavors but they do have a pretty good selection.
I didn't care for the Premier Protein shakes but I know lots of people love them. They were more tolerable to me than most other brands of RTD, I will say that.
I am an outlier on this issue but I don't think it makes that much of a difference if you drink whey concentrate rather than isolate. Follow your own RD/Nut's instructions of course but I never made a point of sticking with isolate and I don't think it hurt me.

My hubby has been 100 % supportive all the way. We had changed our eating habits when he was diagnosed a diabetic 4 yrs ago, so I didnt have to change alot of food when I was banded. My problem was quantity., snacking and a big sweet tooth. But since ive been banded he has lost 8 lbs because we make smaller amounts of food. He's very happy ( he's 6'1, now weighs 204lbs) with both of our weights losses !!

Thats what my wife calls me now. When we go out, we usually just order 1 meal and split it. Sometimes its even too much for both of us.
Before surgery. we both ordered an entree with appetizers and I ate the appetizer, my plate and finished what my wife didn't eat off hers.

Great thread! My husband needed some reassurance when I started dropping weight that I am his forever person. He knew it was silly but that fear that I'd be soaring and might just soar away.....no, he's coming with me. We're very tight, 24 years, solid marriage, but still that seemed to appear from deep within. As far as food, I am a crazy cook -- still love food prep and that hasn't changed. My eating has certainly changed. At parties sometimes my husband I quickly swap plates. He has finished and I have had my tiny portion and don't want to attract attention. And for restaurants I am a cheap date -- I order something I know my husband and/or son will enjoy because I'm just going to have a bit if it. You know, being such a delicate eater and all, lol. OMG, I love this life!

My husband is very supportive and has been very helpful since post-op.
After seeing me lost weight he seemed to concern about his weight (he's not obese and in good health, just slightly over weight) and started to be more careful about food choice especially dinner, he add more veggies to his meals, made Soup for me and eat it together.
Just today that my weight is a bit under his weight and he made the sad face and said that now he has to get used to the fact that now I'm lighter than him haha maybe he is a bit competitive. In 2010 we did a diet together in the same period of time I lost 16 lbs and he lost 29 lbs, of course we gained all back but hopfully from now on we both will be more careful on food choice and eating habit.

I wanted to add that my husband has not always been so supportive. In the past when I have worked very hard to lose weight through numerous methods, I got a lot of teasing (some downright insults), sabotaging, complaining about the lighter foods I prepared, etc. So this is a huge change and I think part of the reason is because he was finally seeing how horribly my weight was affecting me. It was also affecting him since I was no longer able to do the things with him that he wanted to do. I couldn't travel with him, couldn't go places that would require much walking or any other things that we used to enjoy together. He said he even began to fear that I would end up in a wheelchair soon! When I told my husband that I wanted to do this, instead of rolling his eyes, he had such a look of relief on his face that it made me cry!
The responses I've read so far to this question have been overwhelmingly positive - quite a contrast to the answers I saw to the same sort of question to the WeightWatchers forum. I think here, we've all reached such a point where our weight loss is really critical for our health and quality of life.

I had surgery eight months ago. My wife has been the best! I could not have a stronger supporter, cheerleader or advocate for what I am doing. She has made this lifestyle change so much easier for me. I think this has been a crucial part of my success with the program
Our eating habits have changed, as have the foods we eat. She has lost about 25 pounds along the way and looks and feels great! We walk together and are planning to join a gym in a couple weeks. It has been good for both of us!

My husband has been unaffected by my journey at all. It is I who have benefited by HIS lifestyle. He has been heavily into body-building for about ten years now. His diet consists of lean Protein, veggies, whole grains, and Protein shakes and this is my life now, also. There is no more crap-food in my house (said crap used to belong to me). :-)

My hubby has been so supportive too, what a wonderful man I married I do most of the cooking so the family eat what mom cooks lol. I always make a Protein I can have and then I make a great veggie choice for them. I used to make like a rice or a noodle side dish with it too but haven't don't that since before surgery 6mo ago. Nobody needs that stuff anyways.

Ava 324 - that's amazing!! It's like your husband got a virtual sleeve!
I am still awaiting surgery, but very shortly after I announced to my family what my plans were, my husband and daughter quit smoking! Neither had ever even tried before and had no desire to quit. They are both doing great and I am thrilled with that wonderful surprise and commitment on their part to live healthier. My husband seems to be more conscientious about what he eats now, smaller portions, less junk. My other daughter who is overweight has started exercising. So - even though I haven't even really started yet, the whole family is showing their support in very tangible ways.

Before surgery was even in consideration, my husband and I sabotaged each other. I think I played a greater role though. He made poor food choices, but I was more the emotional eater and constantly fatigued. I resisted his encouragement to get active and work out with him.
He came around on supporting surgery, and he did the pre-op dieting (scheduled meals under 1,200 cals/day) with me for two months. He even suffered through a Lean Cuisine instead of the Thanksgiving feast.
Since surgery, I've taken the lead on getting healthy. He eats what I do (when we're together), just larger portions. He joins me at the gym every now and then and even signed on with my personal trainer. We completed our first 5K Friday, and he's on board for many more.
He's the best, and I wouldn't be in such a positive place and wouldn't have been as successful without him. He's benefited personally too. He's lost 65 lbs of his own and is back in his high school size. He flexes in the mirror now. Haha.

It's normal -- it's gas and you need to walk it off. Gas X helps but the only thing that will ACTUALLY TRULY help is walking! Walk walk walk walk walk --- even in the middle of the night, if you feel discomfort, WALK! I ate pureed after 2 weeks because I actually felt hungry, I ate it very slowly and it sat very well with me. Try eating home-made oatmeal, it sat super well, as did the fat-free plain greek yogurt (lots of protein), also Protein shakes. Good Luck, this too shall pass and you'll be feeling great very soon. But remember..... walk, walk, walk, walk walk!
