Zane's Mom got a reaction from Texasmeg in Judgement issues over low BMI
Hello. I have posted several times and love this forum but I have never posted my stats until now.
Sleeved 6/17 highest weight and preop diet weight 190 current weight 167 goal 140.
My decision: I knew I was self pay because of my low bmi and lack of insurance covering this. I went in thinking lapband was my only option but changed to sleeve because of the anxiety I had over fills and slips etc with the band. I had horrible labs, ridiculous high numbers in so many areas, hiatal hernia and ulcers on my stomach.
My family is super supportive and they are so excited to me to get healthy and active.
I have not told many that I had WLS. Wokers know I had the hernia repair. I am kind of glad the weight has not been dramatic because it can easily say I'm living healthier and the weight is coming off. I've only lost 4 pounds since June 25th.
So ... Does this anger others? Is there judgement that I did something radical because I had the money. I feel it in a way. Now I look at overweight people and think, oh my god this is so life changing ... Everyone should be getting this done.
    What do you honestly think?
Backstory for me. But 99% of people do not know: I am 43 and my husband am I have 10 kids together. He had 3 I had 2 we had 1 and we have adopted 4. We have 4 at home, 1 grown, 15, 6, 6, 5. My biological son was murdered 5/22/2011. He was 18 and victim to a senseless robbery. I have been through 2 trials and under the care of a psychiatrist with 3 daily meds to keep my life stable. And yes with all of that going on I have these small adopted children in my home. Since his death I have gained and gained with failed diet after another.
I know I have to raise these kids for the next 15 plus years as healthy mentally and physically as possible. That has been my motivation.
But .... If you didn't know that, which most don't, is there judgement.

I'm June 17th. Since June 26 I have been stalled. Lost 20 since pre-op and was thrilled but not a pound since the 26th. I drink just fine. I get in 60 gm Protein before I think about meals. Also on soft foods and able to eat very little. I'm trying to walk 30 minutes a day. I am upset but I know it has to end soon.
I would love to keep up with June sleevers. Please keep posting.

I'm in Dallas too. I was sleeved Tuesday. I chose dr stowers in decatur. Everything has gone perfect. Their staff and the hospital have been awesome. I think the time before the surgery gives you time to prepare. And answer almost any question you can think of.

Hello. Sleeved on 6/17. I too have chronic daily as well as Migraine headaches. Let your doctor know what Rx's you take. All of mine were approved. My headaches have been minimal since pre op and now a month out.
I was always one who could take a Handful of pills so I was thankful that the day after surgery I was able to take all my necessary meds with no issues.
Today I still take 4 capsules each morning and two pills at night all at once.
I would say that if you have done your research, and you are wanting the best tool to assist to change your life then the sleeve is your best choice. But it will take the most work!!!
I'm only looking forward from here on out.
    Good luck to you !!!

Zane's Mom got a reaction from BabySheldon in Post op vitamins
I get all of mine OTC. Centrum makes a chewable multi with Iron. I also have a sublingual b-12 and gummie b complex and gummie Calcium. The Vitamin d is a small soft gel. All of these I get at my local Walmart or grocery depending on who has something on sell.
I hope this helps. I don't have issues swallowing any pills, but the nutritionist insisted they be chewables or gummie to have the most nutrients absorbed. Makes sense. You also have to wait between the multi with Iron and Calcium for 2 hours because they should not be taken together.

I was told to take the Calcium two hours apart from the Iron (or multi if it has the iron). So I take a chewable multi with Iron, sublingual B12, gummie B complex and D3 (small gel pill) and capsule Biotin at once. Then later in the day I take the chewable Calcium.
The nutritionist said to take chewables and capsules over tablets because of the amount of time it has to dissolve and absorb in the sleeve. Makes sense so that is what I do.

Zane's Mom got a reaction from Bandista in Super confused! Help! Hubby threw me a loop!
Pink dahlia, thank you. It's been the hardest 3 years of my life. He was "my" only son. We have adopted 4 kids in the last 5 years. So I had to do something to get healthy for them. At home I have 15, 6, 6 and 5.
That is what finally drove me to make a life decision.
Everyone's journey is personal and sometimes painful, but I'm glad I finally decided to live again.

Hello! Sleeved on 6/17. I was going to do band because I have a lower bmi and I thought it was my only option. However when I started doing research, there was one main issue for me.
The band does have to be adjusted periodically and I read about adjustments that do nit allow anything to be held down for periods at a time.
I take 3 daily medications for major depressive disorder resulting from my son's murder three years ago. My psychiatrist suggested the sleeve because it does not change the size of the opening and she wanted to make sure I do not miss multiple doses of my medications.
So I chose sleeve and on day two I started taking my pills with no issues. I can swallow without sipping all day and I am following Drs orders with diet and Vitamins.
I also had a hiatal hernia repairer and the scope showed ulcers on my stomach so the sleeve removed many of those.
All I'm really worried about is the hair loss but I know I will try my hardest to continue the required Protein intake and I take Biotin too.
The choice is definitely personal. Much success to whichever way you go.
20 pounds down from pre op diet to today. Yeah.

Zane's Mom got a reaction from barbb3 in Self pay in Texas
I wanted to post because I did not see many self pays in the U.S. I knew off the bat that I would not have insurance coverage, so I went in knowing I would be paying the bill.
The first place I went to felt like a factory that cranks out procedures. So I went to another place. They were awesome. On my first visit I met with the surgeon himself. I was impressed with the office, staff and him.
At first I though I wanted the band since my BMI is under 35. But after speaking with all of my doctors we decided that a sleeve would be better because of all the medication I take and will take indefinitely.
I had the EDG scope and it showed a large hiatal hernia along with ulcers on my stomach. The surgeons explained how important that hernia repair is because of the new size of the stomach to keep all of the parts where they are supposed to be.
So, my insurance pays for the hernia repair, and I pay the reduced price of $8200 for my sleeve. From consult to surgery was one month. I am 7 days out and happy as can be.
I have had no complications and even the hospital stay was terrific.
I know that price is an absolute issue to many people. But I think my choice was perfect for me. Could I have paid less, yes. But I did have a local surgeon, I did have the hernia repaired, and my support team in the doctors office is only a call or visit away.
Are there others out there like me??? I just wanted to share my story and it's a good one!!!

Hello. This is my second post and I was sleeved this morning. My pain in recovery was intense under my ribs and I was nauseated too. But I got meds for that and it's not bad. I'm a 3 on a 10 scale of pain. I've been walking around the unit floor and have done 11 Laps. I wanted to say that when I made the decision my first appointment was May 14th and here I am sleeved. My insurance was not going to cover no matter what so I was a private pay which made the process so fast. I wish you all well for your ongoing journey. I lost my oldest son at age 18 three years ago. I have 3 adopted children at home 5, 6 & 6. Pllus a 15 year old. I'm doing this for me, to be a better mom for them.
