    For Just Us Guys

I think the give away is the lack of exercise. For the lap band to work (or any diet for that matter) you need to combine healthy eating with exercise. We all understand busy schedules, but even if you can fit in 20 minutes of exercise a few times a week, it's better than not doing any. Without the exercise, if you continue following the dietary guidelines for the band, you should lose, albeit slowly.

    Exercise

I finally bit the bullet and rejoined the gym I belonged to two years ago. I had let my registration lapse, since I was doing a lot of traveling. I got tired of just walking for exercise and especially with the lousier weather of late, I needed to take it to the next level. I like the elliptical machines better than the treadmill, because I work up more of a sweat and feel like I'm accomplishing something. Yesterday, I did 30 minutes on a treadmill (I meant to do 15, then move to the elliptical, but these treadmills have individual TVs and the Jet game was on ). By then I could only do 10 minutes on the elliptical before my legs started burning. I then did some leg work, lifts and presses. I'm going to have to figure out what to do for upper body right now, since I have a bout of tennis elbow and my orthopedist doesn't want me to do any lifting yet. I thin konce he clears me, I will pay for a few personal training sessions, just to help me get st up with a program.

    Guy before/ after Picture

I have a leather bomber jacket that was my dad's from WWII. The last time it fit me I had lost a lot of weight (on Medifast about 18 years ago) and had put some money into fixing it, since it was showing a little sign of age and wear. It's my goal to fit back into it again.

    Is your wife banded ??

My wife is far from needing to be banded, we're like Laurel and Hardy (she's the skinny one ). Since most of the time, we eat dinner alone, she usually makes the same thing for both of us, but just portions me less and shell add more carbs in the form of a bigger baked potato or pasta. Even though weight is not a problem she has to deal with, she has been going to a nutritionist herself to help her learn to eat healthier.
  5. Candle - I meant to ask, where do you go walking in they city? I work midtown on the west side and walk at lunch, going whereever the lights take me so I don't have to slow down, but sometimes run into crowds of people sauntering along. And I always thought New Yorkers were in such a rush all the time
  6. I had my first fill last week and finally saw s significant loss for the first time in a month. I still don't feel a restriction, but I can tell the difference. As far as the birthday cake goes, I agree that one piece is okay, or any 'treat' once in a while. I think if we deny ourselves forever, it really makes it harder to lose because it seems like we are punishing ourselves for being overweight. I was at a surprise 70th birthday party for a friend this weekend. It was a major party, catered and everything. I ate a few hour d'voers, staying away from the fried ones, the salad and a piece of the Tilapia that was one of the entree choices. I made the mistake of walking over to the desert table to see if they had any fruit, which they didn't, but they had cheesecake, which was always a weakness for me. At first I was going to ask for a sliver, but saw the slices were pre-cut. Then I spied a piece on a plate that was about half a slice (someone else must have had the same idea) and asked the server to just cut off a small piece from that. It amounted to about two bites, but satisfied me enough to make me happy without feeling guilty. I weigh myself on Monday's and I still lost

    Panic....a little help here

I think we have all had similar fears pre-op and I'm happy to say that I found most of those fears unfounded. The only problem I had during the surgery was the anesthesiologist had problems finding the arterial line and was too stubborn to seek help. He must have thought he was a Texas oilman. When I threatened to get up off the gurney, he finally got the idea I was stressing a little and called over another doctor who got it the first time. I don't remeber much else about the surgery itself, it went that fast. The only post-operative problems I had was discomfort around the area that made it difficult to sit for a prolonged stretch, I was lucky, because I was between jobs, but to be honest, I had the surgery on a Wednesday and probably would have taken the rest of the week off and been able to go back to work on Monday. I'm a desk jockey, so I can't speak for guys with more physically demanding jobs. I think the worst part was the first week of liquids. Not that I was felling hungry. I heard stories about that and was worried, but whether it was a mental thing or not, I didn't feel hungry at all. It was just that it got boring real quick and I wasn't crazy about the Isopure I was drinking. Once I was off Clear Liquids after the first two days, things improved. I have yet to experience any restrictions or PBing and I do feel full quicker. Everything I've read says coffee is okay and I have a regular cup in the morning, although I drink decaf on cardiologist orders. I'm not a big drinker, but I did like an occasional beer once in a while. I stay away from that now because of the carbs, but I'e learned to take a liking to vodka for those social occasions that call for it . What did you mean by social citations? I have only told a handful of close family and friends about the banding, so for other people who comment on the weight loss, I just laugh it off and blame it on my wife's cooking.

Share your ideas, what did you eat today?

Breakfast: an omelet with egg beaters with spinach and 1 slice low fat cheese. A large decaf coffee when I get into work. Lunch: 1/2 egg salad or tuna salad sandwich on wheat or rye, a vegetable and an apple snack: if I need it, a Protein bar. Dinner: 4 ounces of either chicken or turkey, vegetable and peas or a small baked potato

    For Just Us Guys

I am so glad I found this area. I'm new to the forum and knew I was in trouble when I tripped over a topic in the food forum us guys definitely do not want to read
  10. I like that term, 'head hunger'. I find it usually means a desire for comfort food. Since chocolate is my comfort food (isn't it everybody's? ) I find that this time of year, a cup of hot chocolate (I use Nestle's fat free) satisfies the chocolate craving and serves to fill me up at the same time. I also keep protein bars, like Snicker's Marathon bars in work for midday munchies attacks.
  11. There should have been an additional warning in the subject to the effect that men should not read
  12. I agree that it's overwhelming. You want to make sure that for the money you are spending you will get something you will use and won't break down. There are so many choices out there. When I was over 300, the choices were more limited, because a lot of the treadmills are tested to a maximum capacity of 300 lbs.
  13. Wish I had found this board (and topic) three months ago. I was banded on Aug. 22nd and the first two moths were a breeze. I had absolutely no hunger and was losing about 4 pounds a week. I'm down 63, which includes 20 I lost pre-op. The last 5 weeks have been tougher. I had no restrictions and found my appetite creeping back slowly but surely, so I knew it was time for a fill which I got yesterday. Had a slim fast for lunch, a protein shake for dinner and lots of water and I was satisfied. Today, I had a protein shake for breakfast, coffee (decaf) when I got into work and a slim fast for lunch. I'm sipping on a diet peach snapple as I type this. I'll try food tonight for dinner. I think my biggest problem now is exercise. Before the weather got cold, I had no problems. The walk to the train was a good 10 minutes each way, which I tried to do briskly and I would walk for 20 - 30 minutes at lunchtime. Now that the weather is getting colder and nastier, it's a bit harder. I'm looking at gyms, but I'm out of the house at 7:20 in the morning and don't get home until 7:30 at night, so it's hard to get motivated to go to a gym that late, leaving Friday afternoons and weekends for working out. I guess it's better than nothing. We're also looking at a tread mill for the house and now that I'm under 300 pounds, our choices have increased, so that's a good thing.

    Daily food

I agree that each doctor is different. My doctor also wants his patients to get their protein through normal food intake. I still have a container of protein powder that I use for fill time, but I get all my protein through my normal meals.

Karen and Annie - I'm also a Rockland resident and had my surgery done by Dr. Rivera. I've also been to the support group meetings at Good Sam, although I missed November's due to a conflict.

    Anyone go to Curves Gym?

Does Curves cater mostly to women? My health care provider offers discounts for fitness centers, but all the ones hey offer near me are Curves.

    New to lapbandtalk

Thanks. My doctor was of the attitude that he will not fill until the patient hits a plateau, so I was lucky to make it through the first two months before the weight loss slowed down and I started to feel a need for a fill. I think I'll be hanging out on the food and exercise forums a lot. My biggest problem is finding foods I can eat and keep me interested. I'm restricted due to dietary restrictions (I keep kosher) and the kosher restaurants near work have limited choices in healthy choices. Plus, I find that eating the same thing bores me quickly, so I need variety. My other issue is exercise. I was walking every day at lunch time, but now that the colder weather is here, that is becoming a problem.
  18. I found this forum a little over a month ago, but haven't had a chance to post much until now. Fortunately, the forum getting nudging me with "we miss you notes", so I decided to shut them up I was banded on August 22 of this year and with the 20 pounds I lost pre-op, I'm down 63 pounds to date. I was banded by Dr. Ramon Rivera in Rockland County, NY, who is connected with Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. I highly recommend both doctor and hospital. They have a complete bariatric program that was started about two years ago. The lap band was same day surgery and Good Sam's same day unit is wonderful! I had my first fill today, since over the past month, I only lost 4 pounds and could feel the hunger coming back and had no restrictions with anything I ate, so I knew it was time. P.S. my spell checker does not seem to know the word bariatric and offered up pediatric and geriatric as alternatives. I think I lean toward the latter
  19. I came across this thread yesterday and got nervous, since I had a regular check up this morning (three months out from surgery) and knew I was ready for my first fill. I may have misunderstood what I was reading and worried that I would have to reschedule a separate appointment for the fill. My concerns turned out to be unfounded as the doctor filled me right there. I have to say, nt knowing what to expect, it was a breeze. The doctor described it as getting a vaccination and that's exactly what it felt like.

    Google and your privacy

I'm new to LBT and hope it's okay to chiime in late on this. One reason I came here, rather than one of the Yahoo groups dedicated to bandsters is I find it like the bulletin board format better for to avoid being overwhelmed with posts that do not interest me. However, with a Yahoo group, I cannot read someone else's post without being a member myself. Having said that, I work in eCommerce, so I know a little about SEO. On vBulletin, can you use a robots.txt file to filter out any parts of the site that you don't want to show up in a search? You could block searches for user profile information.
