    The Maintenance Thread

pre surgery, I felt like an addict looking for a fix on food holidays. I couldn’t wait for the great meals, leftovers and overstuffing myself. The weight gain that followed gave me stress/guilt/anxiety. First few years I was scared to indulge. I questioned if it would derail me or if I would go back to the old me. I now indulge on holidays. I had to work on not feeling guilt/stress/anxiety over a slight weight gain. I can control my food world and weight. I expect slight gains and fluctuations. I won’t have a significant regain if I weight myself regularly, keep my behaviors in check, and get back on plan when needed. I have all of you to give me a smack upside the head when I need it.

    No leak test done?

Where did you have your surgery done? Interesting post op book. Not everyone will have a drain after surgery. I’m a sleeve. I was never tested for leaks after surgery. Only during the procedure. One week out are you on liquid, soft, or pureed food stage? What do you eat in a day? How much can you eat or drink in a sitting? How long does it take you to consume it?

Hope all of you had a fantastic thanksgiving, I’m on the high end of my bounce range and back eating in weight loss mode. Indulgence taste great but my body feels sluggish. I prefer the way I feel when I eat healthy.

    Dr. Doesn’t require protein?b

Everyone’s surgeons plan is different. Don’t worry about what your friend is doing. Concentrate on your own instructions. The mantra “protein first” is when your surgery restriction is new. Your stomach is healing. It’s a challenge to consume 60 grams with limited stomach space. You don’t have room for any of the other items allowed on your plan. Most dieticians don’t want patient’s to be reliant on shakes long term. As progress out from surgery, you can easily get your protein with real whole foods and have no need for shakes.

    Crazy personal question

Large breasts are a blessing and a curse. Some of us are lucky and skin bounces back, others embrace it or have plastics. Be prepared to be offended as you rapidly lose weight. People will freely make comments about your body. Conversations may revolve around your weight loss for a while. Inappropriate and hilarious comments make my day. Please share your experiences as they happen.

    Looking for help...

When did you have surgery? You may want to check with your dietician and hire a sports medicine dietician. Trust the professionals over my two cents 😉 What works for me, may not work for you. I carb load (seven days) and do a pre race and taper. I eat low glycemic carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes, fruits, veggies, oatmeal, whole wheat with my protein. Hydration NUUN tabs/electrolytes added to my water in my hydration vest. I add powdered carbs to my water for calories. I run fasted race day. (I don’t eat products with sugar - example running gels/Gatorade) these links will give you an idea of how athletes fuel. https://www.foodcoach.me/eat-runningbiking-weight-loss-surgery/ https://keepmovingweekly.com/2015/06/11/nutrition-for-the-bariatric-athlete-endurance-events/ Running taper: https://www.teamhotshot.com/blog/tips-taper-race-day/ https://www.runnersworld.com/training/a20072822/marathon-taper/ runners stomach https://www.bucketlisttummy.com/5-nutrition-tips-to-help-runners-stomach/

I love that you are finding different studies. It’s important to find a long-term sustainable way of eating that works for the individual. Healthy eating studies change and evolve over the years. Advice for your nutritionist is better than my two cents. *smile* I’m reading fast food genocide. lowering protein macro’s. Taking advantage of healing and protective properties in adding fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, beans with a combination of vegan and animal protein. I think we can all agree that processed and fast foods are crap and will compromise your health. If your goal is to retain or build muscle, your protein macro will be higher. The bariatric mantra of protein first. I question if it applies when you are maintaining. Most of us can easily get our protein goal in with real food as we progress. It applies if you have tight restriction and its hard to hit your macro. Not all carbs are created equal. My carbs are higher and mainly plant based. ( I will eat processed packaged carbs on occasion.) flexible works for me years out.

The honeymoon ending may be at different time range and individual reasons For me, the honeymoon was over when life became normal. My high from rapid weight loss disappeared. The scale is not exciting or a motivator.

    A possible solution?

Thanks, Honestly, it took four years to do a full. I had to train for it. Many people on the site do endurance sports. I will look for a few links so you can get to know them. Others will learn from your experiences. Glad you are here.
