    The Maintenance Thread

Not everyone is going to enjoy working out and its ok. Comments that I worked out too much made me question if I was in disorder zone. How do you know if it’s too much? *laughing *I googled it. In the beginning, I was lucky to walk a half hour. I hated the thought of exercise and going to a gym. Weight loss mode I worked out mild/moderate level one hour 5 to 6 days a week. Most of it walking/elliptical. Light lifting added later. First fitness goal – Run a 5K in memory of my mother. I worked up my fitness over time and found my inner adrenaline junkie. I started to enjoy working out. After I reached maintenance. I changed my weight loss goals into fitness goals. I figured I had come this far, what else and I capable of doing. I now distance run. (half and full marathons) I don’t have the fitness ability to do spartans and triathlons. *smile* I understand some people take it too far. If your team walked into a gym, how many people would be described as working out too much? Currently, I am at the gym 4 to 5 days a week cardio and lifting. Weekend are rest days. Depending on what I’m working on, I can be in the gym two hours. High and low intensity days. If I’m prepping for running season, long run days can be three hours+ on a route. I do less cardio and more weightlifting in the winter.

Take opinions with a grain of salt. They may be raising an eyebrow to rule out transferring addictions or eating disorders. I get that some of us can struggle with these issues. The flip side is…People into fitness/sports that never had surgery don’t get this type of judgment. My team did point out that they don’t encounter many patients with an above average fitness level. Only my opinion, I’ve had the eyebrow raise. *laughing* If you are taking rest days and exercising without injury. If you are simply working on fitness goals. I see no need for concern.

Laughing, it sounds like we had the same office. It would be great if they were on the same page. Some of us log and some of us don't. I know what works for me. Logging has just become a habit. I use it mainly for running and weightlifting at this point. Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Will I be successful?

One of the reasons I had surgery was my bad relationship with food. I had failed so many diet attempts in the past. Pre surgery, I questioned if bariatrics was too good to be true. Pre surgery anxiety is normal. Many of us felt this way. Be honest with yourself about food addiction. Would you benefit from therapy pre/post-surgery? One of the best gifts out of this process was overcoming my old behaviors. For me, this has not been like my diet attempts of the past. Logging my food, exercise, making healthy choices, buying groceries and cooking have become habit. Having the support on this site helped so much. WIsh you the best, Jennifer

    15 months post op HELP

I can relate. Years out, the calorie range that once worked for me changed. I was frustrated. I have no experience with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Could it be a stall or eating maintenance calories? Some options to try. Log your food and dial your calories back by 100. If you are doing the same workout repeatedly, try different types of exercises every other day. Wishing you the best, Jennifer

    The Maintenance Thread

I still have boney butt syndrome. Hard chairs in restaurant’s kill me. I still sleep with a pillow between my knees. Where weight stops is hard to predict. (Starting weight and many other factors). I would have been happy at overweight BMI. I was expecting 60% weight loss with the sleeve. My weight stopped at a BMI of 20. I lost muscle with rapid weight loss. Building muscle became easier with increased calories. I weigh ten pounds more than my lowest weight. My clothing fits better and I filled out some loose skin with weightlifting. Did you ever think eating would be a chore after goal? It gets better over time. You can gain if you choose. It may not happen until you can consume more calories

Fantastic work! Congratulations on goal and moving into maintenance. Conflicting information is frustrating. It maybe because this person is new. Can you call for clarification on maintenance phase food instructions? I agree with @FluffyChix. and @ms.sss I wouldn’t worry about your next appointment . At 5'5" Healthy BMI is 150 to 112 lbs - If you are getting close to 112lbs (underweight) call your team. My office gave me the one size fits all maintaining plan. I hit goal at my 6th month appointment. my surgeon told me if I lost ten pounds, I would be my ideal weight. The nurse said” I would look less skeletal if I gained ten pounds” Obviously, my gold standard team was not helpful with my transition into maintenance. Find a weight you feel healthy at to maintain. You got this.
  13. After all you have been through, you deserve the excitement and support. Hope you get a date soon.

Maintaining is a different animal. Who knew the mental battles still happen in maintenance mode. @ms.sss Thanks for starting this thread. Many vets disappeared on me. I didn’t have support like this after goal. We have each other to not let a regain spiral into a significant gain. Regain is a sensitive subject on this site. It's also something we need to openly talk about. Maintaining long term can be done. @FluffyChix you are on my mind today Many things that I wasn’t prepared for in maintaining. I’m Thankful we met. I knew a 15/20-pound weight bounce is normal. I had a gain my third year (16 lbs.) I had a melt down and it brought me back to this site. In my head I was back to my starting weight (not reality) My fear of regain went into overdrive. I was afraid to eat off plan. I worked my gain back down. But, my fear of regain was not at a healthy level. Wow, it’s been a long haul to be in a place where I can relax. I couldn’t think of a better person than you to start the thread on doing the head work.

    Looking for your story

Excited for you. January will be here before you know it. You will be well taken care of by your team. Read through the forum. (Search box on the top left) it will help you with the good and bad stories. Sleeved 5 years ago. Unfortunately, it took a major health crisis to admit my weight was slowly killing me. The same year I lost my mother to cancer. I investigated bariatrics to get my health in order. I was ready to get this done. More than willing to go through pain to get my life back. I had prior surgeries and experience childbirth. I had a good reference of pain. The side incision took longer to heal (its where they remove the stomach) Medications managed pain. I bounced back and healed quickly. I had a drain for a few days. Yep, it was gross. Took a deep breath and he pulled the line out and it was over. I can’t say I had anything bad experiences with surgery. My health issues are all resolved. It was all worth it and I have no regrets. Wish you the best! Jenn

    Losing Too Much Weight

Some tough love. if you havent already, Join the maintence thread. You will see several people posting exactly the same issues that you are having. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425802-the-maintenance-thread/?tab=comments#comment-4782396 If you truly want to stop weight loss, Stop eating in weight loss mode. 1100 calories without carbs is still weight loss phase. (Protein shakes will only increase calories) Most of us with tight surgery restriction had to graze our food in to slow/stop weight loss. Several frequent meals throughout the day. It may feel like a chore eating that frequently.Start your maintenance diet. Add carbs and fats. Low glycemic carbs so you don’t dump. Another option is powdered carbs that you add to water (cytocarb) or weight gainer protein shakes. (no sugar added) 104lbs at 5’3” would put you in the underweight category. you still have wiggle room.

    Help Avoid Night Time Eating

Your surgery date is 3/6/19, Right? Check with your dietitian on calorie zone at 7 months out. I may be wrong but 600 seems low. (I was around 900/1000 at six months) Trust your professionals. A few things to try Ask your dietican for calorie and carb ratios. It may help with hunger. a small protein snack before bed. (I do cottage cheese or a dannon lite n fit yogurt) I keep my protein night snack in my calories/macros for the day. I keep a veggie tray on hand. If I have maxed out my calories and I’m still hungry, I eat as much raw veggies I want until full. If I try to bargain with myself for other options its head hunger. Update us. I’m curious to know where your calories should be, I hope you find what works for you.

    The Maintenance Thread

I have one question: What about rice during maintenance? I haven't seen anyone talk about it. Is rice a no-no? My maintenance instructions – add healthy fats (nuts seeds avocado) and low glycemic carbohydrates Sweet potato, brown rice and whole wheat. (nothing white or processed with added sugar) Personally, rice bloats me. I can eat small amounts added in a recipe. I got to goal in six months. My restriction was still tight. I had to graze meals to stop my weight loss. Is there no no’ foods in maintaining? I have no off-limit foods, I indulge within reason. I know my body and trigger foods. If I have a slight gain from food choices, I go back to weight loss calories to get them back off. Pre surgery, I could lose weight but not maintain it long term. It took time to change from weight loss “rules” into maintaining. I had to work on my fear of regain and find my own balance. I now trust myself to maintain ten pounds up and down the scale.

https://blog.bariatriceating.com/2015/10/no-pie-pumpkin-pie/ Ingredients One 15-ounce can Libby's pumpkin purée ⅓ cup Truvia sugar replacer or ⅔ cup Splenda granulated ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 2 large eggs One 12-ounce can evaporated milk Splenda sweetened whipped cream Instructions Preheat oven to 350° F. Mix the pumpkin, Truvia, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. Pour into glass or ceramic baking dish. Bake until knife inserted near the center comes out clean - this time can vary greatly depending on how big a baking dish you use.
