    Water Tea intake etc

I could drink water right after surgery. In my docs office this is the norm. With a new stomach I feel we all cautious at first . Over time you will drink more and more. After a couple of weeks I could chug water to a certain extent. You will also find your diebets will receed fast. Get ready and hold on tight its a crazy ride at times but worth it.
  2. The lunch bag gets better with time if you get creative. However, it much easier to stay structured during the work week. I generally eat most of the same stuff, but do change it up. Recently I dumped Greek yogurt for a protein shake and fruit which is my standard breakfast. I make a big batch of chili every couple of weeks for lunch. Have developed a high protien low calorie recipe which I have not gotten tired of. As for chocolate I can live without it. One thing we all have to remember about the holidays is to not start up with our old habit such as grazing. I notice one poster say she has allowed herself all the chocolate she wants in December. Sounds like a scary idea to me. I made that same deal with myself with Scotch. Now I am finding it harder to say NO to scotch. But it has to go.
  3. Strong coffee with lots of cafine is a powerful hungery supressent for me. Great stuff. Cant get enough. Before surgery I could only drink 1 cup a day if I want to sleep at night. After surgery I can drink a cup just before bed and sleep great.
  4. The surgical incisions heal in about 3 to 4 weeks. After that one could do manual labor. You might have blood sugar issues with the diet. I solved this by eating 2 pieces of fruit daily. Some weirdness happens after the surgery. I developed gout in my foot that lasted a few weeks. Didnt feel 100% for about 5 months. It takes time for your body to adjust. Just take it slow and listen to your body.
  5. 55 YO started 344 hit about 234 at 6 months. First 5 months averaged about 15 lbs per month. Seems to have slown down to about 8 lbs a month. On coarse to hit goal of 195 at one year. The scale is one thing. Going through clothing is exciting. Your body feeling like its 18 again is like being superman. The ladies dont know what do for hours at a time. Its a good ride enjoy it.

    Fitbit

I have used fitbit since surgery. I track all my calories and walking through the app. Does it keep me on track with work outs? No, I have to keep my self on track for diet and work outs. Fitbit is only a tool for tracking. I can say that keeping and using the fitbit food journal has been very helpful helping me meet my goals. I recommend fitbit because its easy to use and initial cost is minimal. I use the little one that clips to my belt. I think it was $35 and a battery last about 4 months. I have checked it for accuracy and can say its in 5% in a 5 mile walk. Hope this helps.

    Psychological help?

In my on ground support group many try to blame their issue on the mental part of the game, but the bottom line is follow the rules and you will win. Sure there are some tough games our brains want to play, but sucess can be had if one concentrates on the rules of eating with a sleeve. If you follow most of the rules most of the time you will lose most of the weight. Its that easy:)
  10. Dont sweat it. Very important to keep up on your water. Everyone is different, but hold on tight. I have no doubt the train is ready to leave the station. If you stop loosing for two weeks straight then I would talk to your doc. But I really dont think that is going to happen for a while. Loosing weight is weird and the caloric numbers never seem to add up. Just stay on plan and it will happen.
  11. Your not very far out of surgery. Dont worry about protein , but make sure to get your water in. A month low on protein isnt going to hurt you. It will come in time as you start eating more food. You will get hungry its just different.
  12. Just got done with my 5 month checkup which included all blood work. Every single result is in the green without the use of Meds. Only vitamins.

    6 month monitor plan

Dieting is tough. Developing better habits pre-op will help you post op. The mental aspect is the hardest obstical. You can do it one day at a time. One tool that helped me was a daily meal plan. You need to set your meal eating schedule and follow it. I have been doing this for a while so it has become routine. When I wake up the first thing I do after a trip to the bathroom is drink 20 OZ of water, With in 2 hours of waking you want to eat breakfast, for me this is 6AM. The next food that goes in my mouth is 3 hours (9 am) and usually an apple. Coffee is a great appetite supressent. I drink all day and black to avoid extra calories. Lunch is at noon. At 3PM I am ready for another snack. 6PM is dinner. You will need to figure out how to make it 3 hours without eating. The point is set your schedule and become stubborn as heck to not go off it. I look at it as a challange or game. You wont be perfect, but dont beat yourself up for it. Approach each day one at a time. Drink lots of water all day long. Another helpful trick is to eat slow. It is a pain in the butt, but you will get use to it. Take very small bites and put your fork down between bites.

    6 month monitor plan

I dont understand. Are you 3 months into a 6 month pre-op diet plan? Being scared is natural. I was scared to death until the meds in the OR started taking effect. Now 6 month out and past all the post op stuff I feel very good and am ove 100 lbs down.

Calorie intake at 5 weeks PO

Carbs are tricky but you need them. Another thing to be careful of is low blood sugar. It is not fun. Kind of feels like anxiety. There are basically 3 types of carbs. 1)Dairy, 2)Whole fruit and vegatables, and 3) grain and potatoes based. Rather than worrying about a daily total, try to keep the carbohydrates from grain products (cereals, crackers, chips, potatoes, etc) between 30-60 grams daily. As far as fruit 2-3 servings/day is recommended (30-45 grams carb) Dairy- 2-3 servings/day (24-36 grams carb) This gives you a grand total of 90-140 carbs per day. 60 grams total is not enough to allow good carbs, so I would definitely say to aim for more than that. Also remember that “fiber” is technically a “carbohydrate” but actually produces no calories so they can always be subtracted. As for calories, I track mine using fitbit. My doc likes to see my calories between 1200 and 1500. I keep it closer to 1200. For the first few months I as closer to 1000 each day. My typical daily menu is 1 greek yogurt with 1/4 cup of oat meal mixed in, 2/3 cup of chili for lunch, 4oz of lean Protein and a small serving of vegatables for dinner. 2 pieces of fruit for day time Snacks. This takes me to around 900 calories which leave me a bit of room for a evening snack. Remember to get 64 onces of Water in. Water is real important in many respects.

How do you guys eat out...

Soup and salad are good choices. Non fried seafood. I also enjoy a burger without a bun or fries. But I have to watch out if the burgers are to greasy. Steak and a bite of veggies. Keep in mind restraunt portions will feed you many times over.

    Driving after wls

I didnt feel 100% alert/ready to drive for about 1 week, but could have the day after surgery.

    Gastric sleeve operation

Keep in mind the mental part of WLS is the toughest part. This is not a magic bullet, but you can have great results if your follow the rules. In my, on the ground support group I have obsearved that most women think this surgery is a silver bullet with no work involved. If I just get this surgery, I will have better a better self image, I will look like my skinny girl friends, my relationship with men will improve ect ect.... Surgery happens and they dont change their life style. All the great benefits of this surgery doesnt happen. These women turn out to be sad and frustated. Most never fully understand that success is in their hands, but they dont want to be bother with having to work for it. Its easier to blame non sucess on something other than themselves. Dont fall into this trap. Do your research and know every little detail for sucess inside and out. It is definatley worth it. On the bright side you can still enjoy cooking, but you will look at it differently. You will learn exactly what a 1/4 and 1/2 cup a tablespoon, a 4oz piece of meat is without measuring. You can experiment with spices your have never tried. You can find great substitutes for Pasta and grains. There is lots to learn. And your will become a better healthier cook.

    Cursed or blessed?

I think what your experiencing is normal.
  21. I was allowed coffee right ater surgery. As long as you dont get acid reflux you should be fine. Coffee is now my drug of choice.
  22. par1959

Will this pass? Is this normal?

This is the advise my Doc gave me. Consentrate on water, water, water. You dont need to worry about calories or protein for the next 4 to 6 weeks. All of that will come in time. I found that as my intake progressed from liquid to mushy to solid, my nutrition got better at each stage. Once you get back to solids getting your protein in is easy for most of us.
